On-shell recursion and holomorphic HQET for heavy quark hadronic resonances

Abstract:We develop a new theoretical framework for the treatment of heavy quark (HQ) resonances within heavy quark effective theory (HQET). This framework uses on-shell recursion techniques to express the resonant amplitude as a product of on-shell subamplitudes, which allows one to employ a form-factor representation of the hadronic matrix elements and to obtain an HQ expansion, but at the price of introducing complex momenta. We construct a generalized "holomorphic HQET" onto which such complex-momentum matrix elements can be matched, and we show that $PT$ symmetry ensures the Isgur-Wise functions (and the perturbative corrections) become holomorphic functions of the complex recoil parameter with real coefficients. They are thus an analytic continuation of the standard HQET description. This framework admits a HQ hadron (strong decay) width expansion. At second order, we show it is in good agreement with data for the $B_{1(2)}^{(*)}$ and $D_{1(2)}^{(*)}$ HQ doublets. Taking the $\bar{B} \to (D_1^*(1^-) \to D\pi)l\nu$ system as an example, we compute the holomorphic HQET expansion to first order, as well as the complex-momentum on-shell subamplitudes. A toy numerical study of the resulting differential rates demonstrates that this framework generates HQ resonance lineshapes with large tails, resembling those seen in data.

Abstract:Kolya Uraltsev was one of the inventors of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), that describes inclusive weak decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks and in particular lifetimes. Besides giving a pedagogic introduction to the subject, we review the development and the current status of the HQE, which just recently passed several non-trivial experimental tests with an unprecedented precision. In view of many new experimental results for lifetimes of heavy hadrons, we also update several theory predictions: $\tau (B^+) / \tau (B_d) = 1.04^{+0.05}_{-0.01} \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01$, $\tau (B_s) / \tau (B_d) = 1.001 \pm 0.002$, $\tau (\Lambda_b)/ \tau (B_d) = 0.935 \pm 0.054$ and $\bar {\tau} (\Xi_b^0) / \bar{\tau} (\Xi_b^+) = 0.95 \pm 0.06$. The theoretical precision is currently strongly limited by the unknown size of the non-perturbative matrix elements of four-quark operators, which could be determined with lattice simulations.
Magnetorotational Instability in Liquid Metal Couette Flow

Abstract:Despite the importance of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) as a fundamental mechanism for angular momentum transport in magnetized accretion disks, it has yet to be demonstrated in the laboratory. A liquid sodium alpha-omega dynamo experiment at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology provides an ideal environment to study the MRI in a rotating metal annulus (Couette flow). A local stability analysis is performed as a function of shear, magnetic field strength, magnetic Reynolds number, and turbulent Prandtl number. The later takes into account the minimum turbulence induced by the formation of an Ekman layer against the rigidly rotating end walls of a cylindrical vessel. Stability conditions are presented and unstable conditions for the sodium experiment are compared with another proposed MRI experiment with liquid gallium. Due to the relatively large magnetic Reynolds number achievable in the sodium experiment, it should be possible to observe the excitation of the MRI for a wide range of wavenumbers and further to observe the transition to the turbulent state.

LARGE COMPONENT QCD AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK OF HEAVY QUARK EFFECTIVE FIELD THEORY

Abstract:Based on a large component QCD derived directly from full QCD by integrating over the small components of quark fields with |p| < E + m Q , an alternative quantization procedure is adopted to establish a basic theoretical framework of heavy quark effective field theory (HQEFT) in the sense of effective quantum field theory. The procedure concerns quantum generators of Poincaré group, Hilbert and Fock space, anticommutations and velocity superselection rule, propagator and Feynman rules, finite mass corrections, trivialization of gluon couplings and renormalization of Wilson loop. The Lorentz invariance and discrete symmetries in HQEFT are explicitly illustrated. Some new symmetries in the infinite mass limit are discussed. Weak transition matrix elements and masses of hadrons in HQEFT are well defined to display a manifest spin-flavor symmetry and 1/m Q corrections. A simple trace formulation approach is explicitly demonstrated by using LSZ reduction formula in HQEFT, and shown to be very useful for parametrizing the transition form factors via 1/m Q expansion. As the heavy quark and antiquark fields in HQEFT are treated on the same footing in a fully symmetric way, the quark–antiquark coupling terms naturally appear and play important roles for simplifying the structure of transition matrix elements, and for understanding the introduction of "dressed heavy quark"–hadron duality. In the case that the "longitudinal" and "transverse" residual momenta of heavy quark are at the same order of power counting, HQEFT provides a consistent approach for systematically analyzing heavy quark expansion in terms of 1/m Q . Some interesting features in applications of HQEFT to heavy hadron systems are briefly outlined.

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions involve strongly coupled dynamics of QCD in the entire history of time evolution. We review recent theoretical efforts to meet this challenge, focusing on the two approaches that the speaker has contributed to: 1) Holography or AdS/CFT correspondence, and 2) Symmetry protected phenomena such as those originating from triangle anomaly. The presentation is oriented to non-experts on these fields, and hence relies on intuitive pictures of the methods and the results, without going into specific details.

Abstract:Perturbative QCD has made significant progress over the last few decades. In the first part, we present an introductory overview of perturbative QCD as seen from a modern viewpoint. We explain the relation between purely perturbative predictions and predictions based on Wilsonian effective field theories. We also review progress of modern computational technologies and discuss intersection with frontiers of mathematics. Analyses of singularities in Feynman diagrams play key roles towards developing a unified view. In the second part, we discuss application of perturbative QCD, based on the formulation given in the first part, to heavy quarkonium systems and the interquark force between static color charges. We elucidate impacts on order Lambda_QCD physics in the quark mass and interquark force, which used to be considered inaccessible by perturbative QCD.

Position-space renormalization schemes for four-quark operators in HQET

Abstract:X-space schemes are gauge-invariant, regulator-independent renormalization schemes that are defined by requiring position-space correlation functions of gauge invariant operators to be equal to their noninteracting values at particular kinematic points. These schemes can be used to nonperturbatively renormalize composite operators in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD), and by computing matching coefficients between the X-space scheme and MSbar in the dimensionally-regulated continuum, matrix elements calculated with LQCD can be converted to MSbar-renormalized matrix elements. Using X-space schemes for Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) operators has the additional benefit that appropriate ratios of position-space correlation functions cancel the power divergent static-quark self-energy of Lattice HQET nonperturbatively. This work presents the O($\alpha_S$) matching coefficients between X-space renormalized four-quark flavor-nonsinglet HQET operators relevant for the lifetimes of charm- and bottom-hadrons, and four-quark HQET operators relevant for mixing between neutral mesons containing a heavy quark, such as B-Bbar mixing.

Abstract:In this review article, we discuss the current status and future prospects of perturbation theory as a means of studying the equilibrium thermodynamic and near-equilibrium transport properties of deconfined QCD matter. We begin with a brief introduction to the general topic, after which we review in some detail the foundations and modern techniques of the real- and imaginary-time formalisms of thermal field theory, covering e.g. the different bases used in the real-time formalism and the resummations required to deal with soft and collinear contributions. After this, we discuss the current status of applications of these techniques, including topics such as electromagnetic rates, transport coefficients, jet quenching, heavy quarks and quarkonia, and the Equations of State of hot quark-gluon plasma as well as cold and dense quark matter. Finally, we conclude with our view of the future directions of the field, i.e. how we anticipate perturbative calculations to contribute to our collective understanding of strongly interacting matter in the coming years.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics A, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we have employed HQET to determine the masses of radially excited ([math]) S-wave charm and bottom baryons. The HQET Lagrangian containing the non-perturbative parameters is shown with heavy baryon fields. The non-perturbative parameters, couplings, and decay widths are also studied for the S-wave singly heavy baryons. The HQET parameters [math], [math] and [math] are calculated for the ground state ([math]) using the masses of S-wave baryons. The [math] mass short-distance mass scheme is employed to estimate the heavy quark masses and non-perturbative parameters. The mass term ratios of [math] and [math] mesons and baryons containing parameters [math] and [math] are studied by varying the bottom quark mass. This analysis shows that heavy quarks behave the same inside mesons and baryons in both 1S and 2S states. The HQET symmetry of [math] is used to find the parameters and masses for [math] S-wave baryons. The variation of mass of 2S baryons with the non-perturbative parameters [math] and [math] is discussed. The Regge trajectories are also plotted in the [math] plane using masses of [math] and 2 charm and bottom baryons. The Regge trajectories are parallel and equidistant lines in the [math] plane. We have also studied the strong decays of charm and bottom baryons for both [math] and [math] states. We have estimated the coupling constants [math] and [math] for [math], and [math] for [math]. We have also shown the semi-electronic decay rates of charm baryons in the spectator heavy quark approximation for [math], [math], and [math] transitions. The decay rates for [math] transitions are of the same order as [math] transitions. This analysis agrees well with the available theoretical and experimental data.

Abstract:In a planetary or satellite system, idealized as n small bodies in initially coplanar, concentric orbits around a large central body, obeying Newtonian point-particle mechanics, resonant perturbations will cause dynamical evolution of the orbital radii except under highly specific mutual relationships, here derived analytically apparently for the first time. In particular, the most stable situation is achieved (in this idealized model) only when each planetary orbit is roughly twice as far from the Sun as the preceding one, as observed empirically already by Titius (1766) and Bode (1778) and used in both the discoveries of Uranus (1781) and the Asteroid Belt (1801). Abstract:We discuss some processes for studying heavy quarkonium production and polarization mechanisms, including photoproduction of ηc and J/ψ polarization in DIS at HERA. The J/ψ hadroproduction at Tevatron in the kt factorization approach is also studied. We find that these processes can provide important tests for heavy quarkonium production, and the color-octet mechansim.

Abstract:I introduce and explore a range of topics of contemporary interest in hadronic physics: from what drives the formation of a nonzero quark condensate to the effect that mechanism has on light and heavy meson form factors, and the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The trail leads naturally through a discussion of confinement, dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and bound state structure: phenomena that require nonperturbative methods for their explanation. In all of this, the necessary momentum-dependent modification of the quark and gluon propagators plays a significant role.
Resummation phenomenology and PDF determination for precision QCD at the LHC

Abstract:With the ongoing Run 3 of the LHC and its upcoming High-Luminosity upgrade, there is a growing need to study observables with high precision both experimentally and theoretically. To increase precision on the theory side, improvements of fixed-order perturbative predictions, resummation of logarithmic enhancements and accurate determination of proton structure are required. This thesis explores the latter two topics. We discuss high-energy logarithms and their resummation techniques, introducing an extension of the HELL formalism for multi-differential distributions in transverse momentum, rapidity and invariant mass. We apply this framework to heavy-quark pair production at the LHC, studying the kinematics of both a single quark and the final-state pair. An additional discussion is dedicated to a possible extension of the kt-factorisation framework, which underlies high-energy resummation, to capture next-to-leading logarithmic corrections. To test this hypothesis, we delve into the computation of a NLO off-shell coefficient function using Higgs-induced DIS in the infinite top mass limit as a benchmark process and report a partial result. Beside high-energy logarithms, we consider the determination of transverse-momentum distributions from a high mass system with additional QCD radiation and exclusive production cuts. Specifically, we focus on $HW^+$ production with a jet veto and analyse the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum at NNLO, using qt-subtraction. We complement the fixed order study with NNLL resummation of jet-veto logarithms and linear power correction in ptHW using the RadISH formalism. Finally, in the last project pertaining to this thesis we consider the problem of Parton Distribution Function determination. We propose a minimal parametrisation guided by physical arguments and investigate its performance in fitting the HERA dataset with NLO QCD theory predictions.

Hard parton dispersion in the quark-gluon plasma, non-perturbatively

Abstract:The in-medium dispersion of hard partons, encoded in their so-called asymptotic mass, receives large non-perturbative contributions from classical gluons, i.e. soft gluons with large occupation numbers. Here, we discuss how the analytical properties of thermal amplitudes allow for a non-perturbative determination of the infrared classical contribution through lattice determinations in the dimensionally-reduced effective theory of hot QCD, EQCD. We show how these lattice determinations need to be complemented by perturbative two-loop matching calculations between EQCD and QCD, so that the unphysical (classical) ultraviolet behavior of EQCD is replaced by its proper quantum QCD counterpart. We show how lattice and perturbative EQCD are in good agreement in the UV and present an outlook on the two-loop quantum QCD contribution.
