Abstract:Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is one of the most fundamental correspondences between algebra and geometry, and has inspired a plethora of noncommutative analogs. In last two decades, there has been an increased interest in understanding vanishing sets of polynomials in several matrix variables without restricting the matrix size, prompted by developments in noncommutative function theory, control systems, operator algebras, and quantum information theory. The emerging results vary according to the interpretation of what vanishing means. For example, given a collection of noncommutative polynomials, one can consider all matrix tuples at which the values of these polynomials are all zero, singular, have common kernel, or have zero trace. This survey reviews Nullstellensätze for the above types of vanishing sets, and identifies their structural counterparts in the free algebra.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a strong version of the Hilbert Nullstellensatz in the ring $\mathbb H[q_1,\ldots,q_n]$ of slice regular polynomials in several quaternionic variables. Our proof deeply depends on a detailed analysis of the common zeros of slice regular polynomials which belong to an ideal in $\mathbb H[q_1,\ldots,q_n]$. This study motivates the introduction of a new notion of algebraic set in the quaternionic setting, which allows us to define a Zariski-type topology on $\mathbb H^n$.

Abstract: We clarify the linear algebra used in the quaternionic pluripotential theory so that proofs of several results there can be greatly simplified. In particular, we characterize and normalize real $2$-forms with respect to the quaternionic structure, and show that the Moore determinant of a quaternionic hyperhermitian matrix is the coefficient of the exterior product of the associated real $2$-form. As a corollary, the quaternionic Monge-Amp\`{e}re operator is the coefficient of the exterior product of the Baston operator.

Abstract:Let (g,k) be a complex quaternionic symmetric pair with k having an ideal sl(2,C) , k=sl(2,C)+mc . Consider the representation Sm(C2)=Cm+1 of k via the projection k→sl(2,C) onto the ideal sl(2,C) . We study the finite dimensional irreducible representations V(λ) of g which contain Sm(C2) under k⊆g . We give a characterization of all such representations V(λ) and find the corresponding multiplicity m(λ,m)=dimHom(V(λ)|k,Sm(C2)). We consider also the branching problem of V(λ) under l=u(1)C+mc⊂k and find the multiplicities. Geometrically the Lie subalgebra l⊂k defines a twistor space over the compact symmetric space of the compact real form Gu of GC , Lie(GC)=g , and our results give the decomposition for the L2 -spaces of sections of certain vector bundles over the symmetric space and line bundles over the twistor space. This generalizes Cartan–Helgason's theorem for symmetric spaces (g,k) and Schlichtkrull's theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces where one-dimensional representations of k are considered.

On the geometry of zero sets of central quaternionic polynomials II

Abstract:Following the work of the first and last authors [2], we further analyze the structure of a zero set of a left ideal in the ring of central polynomials over the quaternion algebra H. We describe the "algebraic hull" of a point in H^n and prove it is a product of spheres. Using this description we give a new proof to a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci. We also show that the main result of [2] does not extend to general division algebras.

Abstract:A classical result about unit equations says that if Γ 1 and Γ 2 are finitely generated subgroups of ${\mathbb C}^\times$ , then the equation x + y = 1 has only finitely many solutions with x ∈ Γ 1 and y ∈ Γ 2 . We study a non-commutative analogue of the result, where $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2$ are finitely generated subsemigroups of the multiplicative group of a quaternion algebra. We prove an analogous conclusion when both semigroups are generated by algebraic quaternions with norms greater than 1 and one of the semigroups is commutative. As an application in dynamics, we prove that if f and g are endomorphisms of a curve C of genus 1 over an algebraically closed field k, and deg( f), deg(g)≥ 2, then f and g have a common iterate if and only if some forward orbit of f on C(k) has infinite intersection with an orbit of g.
Generalizing Hurwitz's quaternionic proof of Lagrange's and Jacobi's four-square theorems

Abstract:A proof of Lagrange's and Jacobi's four-square theorem due to Hurwitz utilizes orders in a quaternion algebra over the rationals. Seeking a generalization of this technique to orders over number fields, we identify two key components: an order with a good factorization theory and the condition that all orbits under the action of the group of elements of norm $1$ acting by multiplication intersect the suborder corresponding to the quadratic form to be studied. We use recent results on class numbers of quaternion orders and then find all suborders satisfying the orbit condition. Subsequently, we obtain universality and formulas for the number of representations by the corresponding quadratic forms. We also present a quaternionic proof of Götzky's four-square theorem.

Abstract:Following ideas by Beardon, Minda and Baribeau, Rivard, Wegert in the context of the complex Schwarz-Pick Lemma, we use iterated hyperbolic difference quotients to prove a quaternionic multipoint Schwarz-Pick Lemma, in the context of the theory of slice regular functions. As applications, we obtain quaternionic Dieudonné and Goluzin estimates. Finally, an algorithm for the construction of (Nevanlinna-Pick) interpolating slice regular functions with real nodes is provided as a byproduct of the quaternionic multipoint Schwarz-Pick Lemma.

Abstract:The concept of positively and negatively compatible null vectors arises in the study of Clifford geometric algebras with a Lorentz-Minkowski metric. In previous works, the basic properties of such algebras have been set down in terms of a new principle of quantum duality. In the present work, the same structure is studied in terms of real and complex quantum integers, which generalize the real and complex number systems. It seems natural to identify a qubit as a pair of compatible null vectors; the up state of the qubit being their sum, and the down state being their difference. Basic identities are developed to make calculations routine, and two different representations of the symmetric group are given.

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:Penrose's two-spinor notation for 4-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds is extended to two-component notation for quaternionic manifolds, which is a useful tool for calculation. We can construct a family of quaternionic complexes over unimodular quaternionic manifolds only by elementary calculation. On complex quaternionic manifolds as complexification of quaternionic Kähler manifolds, the existence of these complexes was established by Baston by using twistor transformations and spectral sequences. Unimodular quaternionic manifolds constitute a large nice class of quaternionic manifolds: there exists a very special curvature decomposition; the conformal change of a unimodular quaternionic structure is still unimodular quaternionic; the complexes over such manifolds are conformally invariant. This class of manifolds is the real version of torsion-free QCFs introduced by Bailey and Eastwood. These complexes are elliptic. We also obtain a Weitzenböck formula to establish vanishing of the cohomology groups of these complexes for quaternionic Kähler manifolds with negative scalar curvatures.

Abstract:Let R be the ring of polynomials in n central variables over the real quaternion algebra H, and let I be a left ideal in R. We prove that if a polynomial p in R vanishes at all the common zeros of I in H^n with commuting coordinates, then as a slice regular quaternionic function, p vanishes at all common zeros of I in H^n. This confirms a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci, who settled the two dimensional case.

Abstract:Inspired by the study of complex nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations, we investigate nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations for quaternionic matrices. We introduce the comparison matrix of a quaternionic matrix, extending that of a complex matrix, and use it to give a condition for the existence and uniqueness of the extremal solution. The solution can be obtained by a fixed-point iteration.

Abstract:In this work, we describe the moduli of triples of points in quaternionic projective space which define uniquely the congruence classes of such triples relative to the action of the isometry group of quaternionic hyperbolic space ${\rm H}^n_{\mathbb{Q}}$. To solve this problem, we introduce some basic invariants of triples of points in quaternionic hyperbolic geometry. In particular, we define quaternionic analogues of the Goldman invariants for mixed configurations of points introduced by him in complex hyperbolic geometry.

On the nullities of quartic circulant graphs and their extremal null spaces

Abstract:A circulant graph is a simple graph whose adjacency matrix can be represented in the form of a circulant matrix, while a nut graph is considered to be a graph whose null space is spanned by a single full vector. In a previous study by Damnjanović [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.03026" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.03026">arXiv:2212.03026</a>, 2022], the complete set of all the pairs $(n, d)$ for which there exists a $d$-regular circulant nut graph of order $n$ has been determined. Motivated by the said results, we put our focus on the quartic circulant graphs and derive an explicit formula for computing their nullities. Furthermore, we implement the aforementioned formula in order to obtain a method for inspecting the singularity of a particular quartic circulant graph and find the concise criteria to be used for testing whether such a graph is a nut graph. Subsequently, we compute the minimum and maximum nullity that a quartic circulant graph of a fixed order $n$ can attain, for each viable order $n \ge 5$. Finally, we determine all the graphs attaining these nullities and then provide a full characterization of all of their corresponding extremal null spaces.
