Abstract:Standard techniques for treating linear recurrences no longer apply for quadratic recurrences. It is not hard to determine asymptotics for a specific parametrized model over a wide domain of values (all $p \neq 1/2$ here). The gap between theory and experimentation seems insurmountable, however, at a single outlier ($p = 1/2$).

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish a rational iteration method which can be used as a root-finding algorithm for almost every polynomial. It has no nonrepelling extraneous fixed point in the complex plane and is generally convergent for both quadratic and cubic polynomials. Then some properties of this algorithm are given. By the aid of computer, we produce pictures of the Julia sets for the iterations of some polynomials. Numerical results show that it is a root-finding method with convergence order the same as Halley's method.

Abstract:Following de Loera and Santos, the Pólya exponent of a $n$-ary real form (i.e. a homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables with real coefficients) $f$ is the infimum of the upward closed set of nonnegative integers $m$ such that $(x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^m f$ strictly has positive coefficients. By a theorem of Pólya, a form assumes only positive values over the standard $(n - 1)$-simplex in Euclidean $n$-space if and only if its Pólya exponent is finite. In this note, we compute an upper bound of the Pólya exponent of a quadratic form $f$ that assumes only positive values over the standard simplex. Our bound improves a previous upper bound due to de Klerk, Laurent and Parrilo. For example, for the binary quadratic form $f_\kappa = \lambda^2 x_1^2 - 2 \kappa \lambda x_1 x_2 + x_2^2$, which assumes only positive values over the standard $1$-simplex whenever $0 \le \kappa < 1 < \lambda$, our upper bound of its Pólya's exponent is $O(1/\lambda)$ times that of de Klerk, Laurent and Parrilo's as $\lambda$ tends to infinity.

On the $p$-adic valuation of third order linear recurrence sequences

Abstract:In a recent paper, Bilu et al. studied a conjecture of Marques and Lengyel on the $p$-adic valuation of the Tribonacci sequence. In this article, we study the $p$-adic valuation of third order linear recurrence sequences by considering a generalisation of the conjecture of Marques and Lengyel for third order linear recurrence sequences. Suppose that $(x_n)$ is a third order linear recurrence sequence whose characteristic polynomial has a root $\gamma$ such that $|\gamma|>1$. We show that if there exists a prime $p$ for which the conjecture holds for $(x_n)$, then the solution set of the Diophantine equation given by $x_n=m!$ in positive integers $n,m$ is finite. We also show that the solutions can be effectively computed when the form of the conjecture is explicitly known.

Quadratization of ODEs: Monomial vs. Non-Monomial

Abstract:Quadratization is a transform of a system of ODEs with polynomial right-hand side into a system of ODEs with at most quadratic right-hand side via the introduction of new variables. It has been recently used as a pre-processing step for new model order reduction methods, so it is important to keep the number of new variables small. Several algorithms have been designed to search for a quadratization with the new variables being monomials in the original variables. To understand the limitations and potential ways of improving such algorithms, we study the following question: can quadratizations with not necessarily monomial new variables produce a model of substantially smaller dimension than quadratization with only monomial new variables? To do this, we restrict our attention to scalar polynomial ODEs. Our first result is that a scalar polynomial ODE $\dot{x}=p(x)=a_nx^n+a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+\ldots + a_0$ with $n\geqslant 5$ and $a_n\neq0$ can be quadratized using exactly one new variable if and only if $p(x-\frac{a_{n-1}}{n\cdot a_n})=a_nx^n+ax^2+bx$ for some $a, b \in \mathbb{C}$. In fact, the new variable can be taken $z:=(x-\frac{a_{n-1}}{n\cdot a_n})^{n-1}$. Our second result is that two non-monomial new variables are enough to quadratize all degree $6$ scalar polynomial ODEs. Based on these results, we observe that a quadratization with not necessarily monomial new variables can be much smaller than a monomial quadratization even for scalar ODEs. The main results of the paper have been discovered using computational methods of applied nonlinear algebra (Gröbner bases), and we describe these computations.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic formulae for small weighted solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $\lambda_1x_1^2+\cdots +\lambda_nx_n^2\equiv \lambda_{n+1}\bmod{p^m}$, where $p$ is a fixed odd prime, $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_{n+1}$ are integer coefficients such that $(\lambda_1\cdots \lambda _{n},p)=1$ and $m\rightarrow \infty$. If $n\ge 6$, $p\ge 5$ and the coefficients are fixed and satisfy $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_n>0$ and $(\lambda_{n+1},p)=1$ (inhomogeneous case), we obtain an asymptotic formula which is valid for integral solutions $(x_1,...,x_n)$ in cubes of side length at least $p^{(1/2+\varepsilon)m}$, centered at the origin. If $n\ge 4$ and $\lambda_{n+1}=0$ (homogeneous case), we prove a result of the same strength for coefficients $\lambda_i$ which are allowed to vary with $m$. These results extend previous results of the first- and the third-named authors and N. Bag.

Abstract:It appears that, along with many of my friends and colleagues, I had been brainwashed by the great and tragic lives of Abel and Galois to believe that no general formulas are possible for roots of equations higher than quartic. This seemed to be confirmed by the brilliant and arduous solution of the general quintic by Hermite. Yet, below we find a formula giving a root to any algebraic equation of degree 2-5 and any reduced equation (see below) of higher degree. This algorithm, which must have been familiar to Lagrange, resulted when I was working on a paper on the asymptotics of hypergeometric functions where Gauss' multiplication formula for the gamma function is used to reduce certain infinite series, and by a happy accident my copy of Whittaker and Watson opened at p. 133.

Abstract:It is well-known that cancellation in short character sums (e.g. Burgess' estimates) yields bounds on the least quadratic nonresidue. Scant progress has been made on short character sums since Burgess' work, so it is desirable to find a new approach to nonresidues. The goal of this note is to demonstrate a new line of attack via long character sums, a currently active area of research. Among other results, we demonstrate that improving the constant in the Pólya-Vinogradov inequality would lead to significant progress on nonresidues. Moreover, conditionally on a conjecture on long character sums, we show that the least nonresidue for any odd primitive character (mod $k$) is bounded by $(\log k)^{1.4}$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime, let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number and let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a non-empty set satisfying $|A| \ll p^{1/2}$. Denoting $J_s(A)$ to be the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i - x_{i+s}) = \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i^2 - x_{i+s}^2) = 0, \] with $x_1, \dots, x_{2s} \in A$, our main result implies that \[ J_s(A) \ll |A|^{2s - 2 - 1/9}. \] This can be seen as a finite field analogue of the quadratic Vinogradov mean value theorem. Our techniques involve a variety of combinatorial geometric estimates, including studying incidences between cartesian products $A\times A$ and a special family of modular hyperbolae.

Abstract:The solvability of the cubic congruence $x^{3}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ is referred to as the $\textit{cubic character of 2}$. In evaluating the cubic character of 2, we introduce the Eisenstein integers, Gauss and Jacobi sums, and the law of cubic reciprocity. We motivate this proof by giving ample historical information surrounding the early development of higher reciprocity laws as well as the Gauss' proof of the solvability of the quadratic congruence $x^{2}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$; conventionally the $\textit{quadratic character of 2}$. We simultaneously outline other relevant contributions by Fermat, Euler, Legendre, Jacobi, and Eisenstein.

Abstract:Shanks's sequence of quadratic fields $\Q(\sqrt{S_{n}})$ where $S_{n}=(2^n+1)^2 + 2^{n+2}$ instances a class of quadratic fields for which the class number is large and, therefore, the continued fraction period is relatively short. Indeed, that period length increases linearly with $n$, that is: in arithmetic progression. The fields have regulator $O(n^2)$. In the late nineties, these matters intrigued Irving Kaplansky, and led him to compute period length of the square root of sequences $a^2x^{2n}+bx^{n}+c$ for integers $a$, $b$, $c$, and $x$. In brief, Kap found unsurprisingly that, generically, triples $(a,b,c)$ are `leapers': they yield sequences with period length increasing at exponential rate. But there are triples yielding sequences with constant period length, Kap's `sleepers'. Finally, there are triples, as exemplified by the Shanks's sequence, for which the period lengths increase in arithmetic progression. Felicitously, Kaplansky called these `creepers'. It seems that the sleepers and creepers are precisely those for which one is able to detail the explicit continued fraction expansion for all $n$. Inter alia, this thesis noticeably extends the known classes of creepers and finds that not all are `kreepers' (of the shape identified by Kaplansky) and therefore not of the shape of examples studied by earlier authors looking for families of quadratic number fields with explicitly computable unit and of relatively large regulator. The work of this thesis includes the discovery of old and new families of hyperelliptic curves of increasing genus $g$ and torsion divisor of order $O(g^2)$. It follows that the apparent trichotomy leaper/sleeper/creeper coincides with the folk belief that the just-mentioned torsion is maximum possible.

Abstract:Let $p\geq3$ be a large prime and let $n(p)\geq2$ denotes the least quadratic nonresidue modulo $p$. This note sharpens the standard upper bound of the least quadratic nonresidue from the unconditional upper bound $n(p)\ll p^{1/4\sqrt{e}+\varepsilon}$ to the conjectured upper bound $n(p)\ll (\log p)^{1+\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small number, unconditionally. This improvement breaks the exponential upper bound barrier.

Abstract:Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

Abstract:We treat three recurrences involving square roots, the first of which arises from an infinite simple radical expansion for the Golden mean, whose precise convergence rate was made famous by Richard Bruce Paris in 1987. A never-before-seen proof of an important formula is given. The other recurrences are non-exponential yet equally interesting. Asymptotic series developed for each of these two examples feature a constant, dependent on the initial condition but otherwise intrinsic to the function at hand.

The Least Common Multiple of a Bivariate Quadratic Sequence

Abstract:Let $F\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ be some polynomial of degree 2. In this paper we find the asymptotic behaviour of the least common multiple of the values of $F$ up to $N$. More precisely, we consider $\psi_F(N) = \log\left(\text{LCM}_{0<F(x,y)\leq N}\left\lbrace F(x,y)\right\rbrace\right)$ as $N$ tends to infinity. It turns out that there are 4 different possible asymptotic behaviours depending on $F$. For a generic $F$, we show that the function $\psi_F(N)$ has order of magnitude $\frac{N\log\log N}{\sqrt{\log N}}$. We also show that this is the expected order of magnitude according to a suitable random model. However, special polynomials $F$ can have different behaviours, which sometimes deviate from the random model. We give a complete description of the order of magnitude of these possible behaviours, and when each one occurs.

Abstract:Let $P(x):=a_d x^d+\cdots+a_0\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$, $a_d>0$, be a polynomial of degree $d\geq 2$. Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence of integers satisfying \begin{equation*} x_{n+1}=P(x_n)\mbox{for all}\quad n=0,1,2\ldots,\quad\mbox{and} \quad x_n\to\infty\quad\mbox{as}\quad n\to\infty. \end{equation*} Set $\alpha:=\lim_{n\to\infty} x^{d^{-n}}_n$. Then, under the assumption $a_d^{1/(d-1)}\in\mathbb{Q}$, in a recent result by Dubickas \cite{dubickas}, either $\alpha$ is transcendental, or $\alpha$ can be an integer, or a quadratic Pisot unit with $\alpha^{-1}$ being its conjugate over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we study the nature of such $\alpha$ without the assumption that $a_d^{1/(d-1)}$ is in $\mathbb{Q}$, and we prove that either the number $\alpha$ is transcendental, or $\alpha^h$ is a Pisot number with $h$ being the order of the torsion subgroup of the Galois closure of the number field $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha, a_d^{-\frac{1}{d-1}})$. Other results presented in this paper investigate the solutions of the inequality $||q_1 \alpha_1^n+\cdots+q_k \alpha_k^n +\beta||<\theta^n$ in $(n,q_1,\ldots,q_k)\in \mathbb{N}\times(K^\times)^k$, considering whether $\beta$ is rational or irrational. Here, $K$ represents a number field, and $\theta\in (0,1)$. The notation $||x||$ denotes the distance between $x$ and its nearest integer in $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-order Recursive Quadratic (RQ) algorithm is introduced, and the features of this algorithm are thoroughly studied and illustrated. In addition, a robust RQ algorithm is also developed in the presence of general bounded noisy data to enhance model robustness. A numerical example is included to demonstrate the efficiency of RQ algorithms by comparing the results with both the projection algorithm and the conventional recursive least squares algorithm. Also some simulations are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the RQ and robust RQ algorithms.
