Polynomial Quotient Rings and Kronecker Substitution for Deriving Combinatorial Identities

Abstract:We introduce a framework for generating combinatorial identities by applying Kronecker substitution to polynomial expansions within quotient rings. We apply this methodology to derive a general formula for C-recursive integer sequences, as well as explicit formulas for certain combinatorial sequences, including the Pell numbers and central binomial coefficients. We also discover an unusual representation for the real $n$-th roots of positive integers $\sqrt[n]{a}$, characterized as the limit of a modular expression. The theorems and results presented provide a theoretical basis for future research on the interconnections between Kronecker substitution, polynomial ring expansions, and their applications in combinatorial sequences and beyond.

Abstract:In 1982, A. K. Lenstra, H. W. Lenstra, and L. Lovász introduced the first polynomial-time method to factor a nonzero polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Q}[x]$ into irreducible factors. This algorithm, now commonly referred to as the LLL Algorithm, can also be applied to compute simultaneous Diophantine approximations. We present a significant improvement of a result by Bosma and Smeets on the quality of simultaneous Diophantine approximations achieved by the LLL Algorithm.

Abstract:For a positive integer sequence $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1, \dots, a_{N+1})$, Sylvester's denumerant $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ counts the number of nonnegative integer solutions to $\sum_{i=1}^{N+1} a_i x_i = t$ for a nonnegative integer $t$. It has been extensively studied and a well-known result asserts that $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $t$ of degree $N$. A milestone is Baldoni et al.'s polynomial algorithm in 2015 for computing the top $k$ coefficients when $k$ is fixed. Their development uses heavily lattice point counting theory in computational geometry. In this paper, we explain their work in the context of algebraic combinatorics and simplify their computation. Our work is based on constant term method, Barvinok's unimodular cone decomposition, and recent results on fast computation of generalized Todd polynomials. We develop the algorithm \texttt{CT-Knapsack}, together with an implementation in \texttt{Maple}. Our algorithm avoids plenty of repeated computations and is hence faster.

Small solutions to inhomogeneous and homogeneous quadratic congruences modulo prime powers

Abstract:We prove asymptotic formulae for small weighted solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $\lambda_1x_1^2+\cdots +\lambda_nx_n^2\equiv \lambda_{n+1}\bmod{p^m}$, where $p$ is a fixed odd prime, $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_{n+1}$ are integer coefficients such that $(\lambda_1\cdots \lambda _{n},p)=1$ and $m\rightarrow \infty$. If $n\ge 6$, $p\ge 5$ and the coefficients are fixed and satisfy $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_n>0$ and $(\lambda_{n+1},p)=1$ (inhomogeneous case), we obtain an asymptotic formula which is valid for integral solutions $(x_1,...,x_n)$ in cubes of side length at least $p^{(1/2+\varepsilon)m}$, centered at the origin. If $n\ge 4$ and $\lambda_{n+1}=0$ (homogeneous case), we prove a result of the same strength for coefficients $\lambda_i$ which are allowed to vary with $m$. These results extend previous results of the first- and the third-named authors and N. Bag.

Multiple exponential sums and their applications to quadratic congruences

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method of evaluating general exponential sums with rational amplitude functions for multiple variables which complements works by T. Cochrane and Z. Zheng on the single variable case. As an application, for $n\geq 2$, a fixed natural number, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the (weighted) number of solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+x_2^2+...+x_n^2\equiv x_{n+1}^2\bmod{p^m}$ in small boxes, thus establishing an equidistribution result for these solutions.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
On a Pair of Diophantine Equations

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract:We bound the greatest common divisor of two coprime multivariable polynomials evaluated at algebraic numbers, generalizing work of Levin, and going towards conjectured inequalities of Silverman and Vojta. As an application, we prove results on greatest common divisors of terms from two linear recurrence sequences, extending the results of Levin, who considered the case where the linear recurrences are simple, and improving recent results of Grieve and Wang. The proofs rely on Schmidt's Subspace Theorem.

Abstract:Let $p(n)$ be the partition function. Ahlgren and Ono conjectured that every arithmetic progression contains infinitely many integers $N$ for which $p(N)$ is not congruent to $0\pmod{3}$. Radu proved this conjecture in 2010 using work of Deligne and Rapoport. In this note, we give a simpler proof of Ahlgren and Ono's conjecture in the special case where the modulus of the arithmetic progression is a power of $3$ by applying a method of Boylan and Ono and using work of Bellaïche and Khare generalizing Serre's results on the local nilpotency of the Hecke algebra.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we studied certain sequences of simultaneous rational approximations in ${\bf R}^2$ which present some analogy with the continued fractions. We got results around the Littlewood conjecture by using such approximations. Here we show that such results also hold when we add divisibility conditions.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Sufficient conditions for a problem of Polya

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

Integer Programming with GCD Constraints

Abstract:We study the non-linear extension of integer programming with greatest common divisor constraints of the form $\gcd(f,g) \sim d$, where $f$ and $g$ are linear polynomials, $d$ is a positive integer, and $\sim$ is a relation among $\leq, =, \neq$ and $\geq$. We show that the feasibility problem for these systems is in NP, and that an optimal solution minimizing a linear objective function, if it exists, has polynomial bit length. To show these results, we identify an expressive fragment of the existential theory of the integers with addition and divisibility that admits solutions of polynomial bit length. It was shown by Lipshitz [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 235, pp. 271-283, 1978] that this theory adheres to a local-to-global principle in the following sense: a formula $\Phi$ is equi-satisfiable with a formula $\Psi$ in this theory such that $\Psi$ has a solution if and only if $\Psi$ has a solution modulo every prime $p$. We show that in our fragment, only a polynomial number of primes of polynomial bit length need to be considered, and that the solutions modulo prime numbers can be combined to yield a solution to $\Phi$ of polynomial bit length. As a technical by-product, we establish a Chinese-remainder-type theorem for systems of congruences and non-congruences showing that solution sizes do not depend on the magnitude of the moduli of non-congruences.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. This approach involves measures of local positivity of divisors combined with Faltings's version of Siegel's lemma instead of a zero estimate such as Dyson's lemma. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.
