Abstract:According to the Abel-Ruffini theorem [1] and Galois theory [2], there is no solution in finite radicals to the general quintic equation. This article takes a different approach and proposes a new method to solve the quintic by iteration of radicals. But, the most intriguing result is an accurate algebraic formula for absolute and relative root approximation: |formula - root| < 0.00432 and |formula/root - 1| < 0.0251. We then expand some of the geometric properties discussed to construct a trigonometric algorithm that derives all roots.

Abstract:In this article, using only elementary knowledge of complex numbers, we sketch a proof of the celebrated Abel--Ruffini theorem, which states that the general solution to an algebraic equation of degree five or more cannot be written using radicals, that is, using its coefficients and arithmetic operations $+,-,\times,÷,$ and $\sqrt{\ }$. The present article is written purposely with concise and pedagogical terms and dedicated to students and researchers not familiar with Galois theory, or even group theory in general, which are the usual tools used to prove this remarkable theorem. In particular, the proof is self-contained and gives some insight as to why formulae exist for equations of degree four or less (and how they are constructed), and why they do not for degree five or more.

Abstract:We present short elementary proofs of the well-known Ruffini-Abel-Galois theorems on insolvability of algebraic equations in radicals. These proofs are obtained from existing expositions by stripping away material not required for the proofs (but presumably required elsewhere). In particular, we do not use the terms `Galois group' and even `group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or to recall) a starting idea of Galois theory: the symmetry of a polynomial of several variables is decreased when a radical is extracted. So the note provides a bridge (by showing that there is no gap) between elementary mathematics and Galois theory. The note is accessible to students familiar with polynomials, complex numbers and permutations; so the note might be interesting easy reading for professional mathematicians.

Abstract:This paper is purely expository. We present short elementary proofs of * the Gauss Theorem on constructibility of regular polygons; * the existence of a cubic equation unsolvable in real radicals; * the existence of a quintic equation unsolvable in complex radicals (Galois Theorem). The statements of these celebrated results are simple and well-known. However, their proofs given in most textbooks rely upon much unmotivated material and are far from being economic. We do not use the terms `Galois group' or even `group'. The paper is accessible for students familiar with polynomials and complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for professional mathematicians. Short English version is followed by an extended Russian version where before presenting the proofs we illustrate the main ideas by sequences of problems with hints or solutions.

Abstract:Kronecker observed that either all roots or only one root of a solvable irreducible equation of odd prime degree with integer coefficients are real. This gives a possibility to construct specific examples of equations not solvable by radicals. A relatively elementary proof without using the full power of Galois theory is due to Weber. We give a rather short proof of Kronecker's theorem with a slightly different argument from Weber's. Several modern presentations of Weber's proof contain inaccuracies, which can be traced back to an error in the original proof. We discuss this error and how it can be corrected.

Abstract:The real roots of the cubic and quartic polynomials are studied geometrically with the help of their respective Siebeck--Marden--Northshield equilateral triangle and regular tetrahedron. The Viète trigonometric formulae for the roots of the cubic are established through the rotation of the triangle by variation of the free term of the cubic. A very detailed complete root classification for the quartic $x^4 + ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d$ is proposed for which the conditions are imposed on the individual coefficients $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$. The maximum and minimum lengths of the interval containing the four real roots of the quartic are determined in terms of $a$ and $b$. The upper and lower root bounds for a quartic with four real roots are also found: no root can lie farther than $(\sqrt{3}/4)\sqrt{3a^2 - 8b}\, $ from $-a/4$. The real roots of the quartic are localized by finding intervals containing at most two roots. The end-points of these intervals depend on $a$ and $b$ and are roots of quadratic equations -- which makes this localization helpful for quartic equations with complicated parametric coefficients.

Abstract:The solvability of the cubic congruence $x^{3}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ is referred to as the $\textit{cubic character of 2}$. In evaluating the cubic character of 2, we introduce the Eisenstein integers, Gauss and Jacobi sums, and the law of cubic reciprocity. We motivate this proof by giving ample historical information surrounding the early development of higher reciprocity laws as well as the Gauss' proof of the solvability of the quadratic congruence $x^{2}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$; conventionally the $\textit{quadratic character of 2}$. We simultaneously outline other relevant contributions by Fermat, Euler, Legendre, Jacobi, and Eisenstein.

Abstract:section briefly reports on the result of having only nine negative fundamental discriminants with class number 1, and gives tables for the remaining 56 fundamental (32 nonfundamental) discriminants of one class per genus. The chapter then ends with a discussion on the values of the Dirichlet's L-functions at the point 1, but this will only make sense to those readers who are familiar with the class number formula and the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis. The last often chapters is on factorisation and deals with various factorisation procedures related to the theory of binary quadratic forms, such as the SQUFOF method of D. Shanks. Throughout the book there is a reasonable number of concrete examples to illustrate the theory and there is also a fair number of tabular results; but it must be added that what the author considers to be algorithms are no more than proofs of theorems, if these are given at all. There are now many good word processors for authors to prepare "camera-ready" versions of their manuscripts. This is a new found freedom, but there is also an important responsibility associated with this freedom, and authors should seek proper advice and assistance from experts until they have mastered the skilful art of typesetting. The author here uses Tr^X, the most sophisticated computer typesetting program specially designed for mathematics printing, but he has left many glaring faults such as, to name the serious ones, the erratic "baselineskips" after each displayed formula, the distraction of an unacceptably large number of hyphenated words on many pages, and the lack of use of "ties" to prevent silly breaks.

Abstract:Employing Brüdern's and Wooley's new complification method, we establish an asymptotic Hasse principle for the number of solutions to a system of r_3 cubic and r_2 quadratic diagonal forms, when the number of cubic equations is at least double the number of quadratic forms. The number of variables required is lower than in earlier work. In particular, we achieve essentially square root cancellation for systems of one quadratic and arbitrarily many cubic equations.

Abstract:Abstract Solving equations in integers is an important part of the number theory [29]. In many cases it can be conducted by the factorization of equation’s elements, such as the Newton’s binomial. The article introduces several simple formulas, which may facilitate this process. Some of them are taken from relevant books [28], [14]. In the second section of the article, Fermat’s Little Theorem is proved in a classical way, on the basis of divisibility of Newton’s binomial. Although slightly redundant in its content (another proof of the theorem has earlier been included in [12]), the article provides a good example, how the application of registrations could shorten the length of Mizar proofs [9], [17].

Abstract:This article presents a new method for calculating square roots in GF(p) by exponentiating in GF(p^3) or equivalently modulo irreducible cubic polynomials. This algorithm is in some ways similar to the Cipolla-Lehmer algorithm which is based on exponentiating in GF(p^2). Another less well known square root algorithm based on quadratic sums is also given. In addition to this, several conjectures about the output of this GF(p^3) square root algorithm are mentioned.

Abstract:In Ramanujan's Lost Notebook there is an amazing identity that furnishes infinitely many "almost counterexamples" to the cubic Fermat's Last Theorem, with no indication whatsoever how he discovered it. In 1995, Michael Hirschhorn explained, in a brilliant way, how Ramanujan may have done it, based on a certain polynomial identity for a sum of four cubes. Much earlier, Eri Jabotinsky, in an article published in 1946 (in a mathematics journal for teenagers) explained how Ramanujan may have discovered these polynomial identities needed for Hirschhorn's approach. Here we combine these two brilliant ideas (that may or may not have been how Ramanujan did it), automate it, and generalize, by developing an algorithm to solve a large class of cubic diophantine equations. Our interest in this problem was rekindled after reading Amy Alznauer's (b. Andrews) delightful children book "The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity" (Candlewick Press), 2020, where Ramanujan's identity appears in one of the illustrations.

Abstract:We derive the Cardano formula of cubic equations by completing the cube, and provide radical solutions to some algebraic equations of degree greater than 3 by completing powers. The main idea of completing the cube and higher powers arises from David Harrison's center theory of higher degree forms. Elementary criteria and solving algorithms for such algebraic equations are presented, and the computation amounts to solving linear equations and quadratic equations.
