Abstract:Standard techniques for treating linear recurrences no longer apply for quadratic recurrences. It is not hard to determine asymptotics for a specific parametrized model over a wide domain of values (all $p \neq 1/2$ here). The gap between theory and experimentation seems insurmountable, however, at a single outlier ($p = 1/2$).

Iterated Radical Expansions and Convergence

Abstract:We treat three recurrences involving square roots, the first of which arises from an infinite simple radical expansion for the Golden mean, whose precise convergence rate was made famous by Richard Bruce Paris in 1987. A never-before-seen proof of an important formula is given. The other recurrences are non-exponential yet equally interesting. Asymptotic series developed for each of these two examples feature a constant, dependent on the initial condition but otherwise intrinsic to the function at hand.

Abstract:The theory of 'point estimate' and the concept of 'general convergence', which were put forward by Smale in order to investigate the complexity of algorithms for solving equations, have been producing a deep impact on the research about the local behavior, the semi-local behavior and the global behavior of iteration methods. The criterion of point estimate introduced by him not only provides a tool for quantitative analysis of the local behavior but also motivates the establishing of the unified determination for the semi-local behavior. Studying the global behavior in the view of discrete dynamical system will lead to many profound research subjects and open up a rich and colorful prospect. In this review, we will make a summarization about the research progress and some applications in nonsmooth optimizations.

Abstract:The implementation of Newton's method for solving nonlinear equations in abstract domains requires the inversion of a linear operator at each step. Such an inversion may be computationally very expensive or impossible to find. That is why alternative iterative methods are developed in this article that require no inversion or only one inversion of a linear operator at each step. The inverse of the operator is replaced by a frozen sum of linear operators depending on the Fréchet derivative of an operator. The numerical examples illustrate that for all practical purposes, the new methods are as effective as Newton's but much cheaper to implement. The same methodology can be used to create similar alternatives to other methods using inversions of linear operators such as divided differences or other linear operators.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Formal Methods in System Design

Abstract:Automatically generating invariants, key to computer-aided analysis of probabilistic and deterministic programs and compiler optimisation, is a challenging open problem. Whilst the problem is in general undecidable, the goal is settled for restricted classes of loops. For the class of solvable loops, introduced by Rodríguez-Carbonell and Kapur (in: Proceedings of the ISSAC, pp 266–273, 2004), one can automatically compute invariants from closed-form solutions of recurrence equations that model the loop behaviour. In this paper we establish a technique for invariant synthesis for loops that are not solvable, termed unsolvable loops. Our approach automatically partitions the program variables and identifies the so-called defective variables that characterise unsolvability. Herein we consider the following two applications. First, we present a novel technique that automatically synthesises polynomials from defective monomials, that admit closed-form solutions and thus lead to polynomial loop invariants. Second, given an unsolvable loop, we synthesise solvable loops with the following property: the invariant polynomials of the solvable loops are all invariants of the given unsolvable loop. Our implementation and experiments demonstrate both the feasibility and applicability of our approach to both deterministic and probabilistic programs.

Exponential asymptotics and higher-order Stokes phenomenon in singularly perturbed ODEs

Abstract:Outside the area of exponential asymptotics, the concept of the higher-order Stokes phenomenon remains somewhat esoteric. The intention of this work is to provide several examples of relatively simple ordinary differential equations where the phenomenon arises, and to develop additional practical methodologies for its study. In particular, we show how the higher-order Stokes phenomenon may be derived through the hyperterminant representation of the late-term divergence of an asymptotic expansion developed by Olde Daalhuis (J. Comp. Appl. Math. vol. 76, 1996, pp. 255-264). Lower-order components of the factorial-over-power divergence are considered, for which late-late-term divergence arises. Borel resummation of these lower-order components reveals the higher-order Stokes phenomenon, in which new components of the late-terms of the expansion are smoothly switched on with an error function dependence. The techniques are firstly demonstrated with a second-order linear inhomogeneous ODE that exemplifies the simplest example of higher-order Stokes phenomena. Further examples studied include higher-order equations and eigenvalue problems.

Asymptotic solutions for linear ODEs with not-necessarily meromorphic coefficients: a Levinson type theorem on complex domains, and applications

Abstract:In this paper, we consider systems of linear ordinary differential equations, with analytic coefficients on big sectorial domains, which are asymptotically diagonal for large values of $|z|$. Inspired by N. Levinson's work [Lev48], we introduce two conditions on the dominant diagonal term (the $L$-$condition$) and on the perturbation term (the $good\,\,decay\,\,condition$) of the coefficients of the system, respectively. Under these conditions, we show the existence and uniqueness, on big sectorial domains, of an $asymptotic$ fundamental matrix solution, i.e. asymptotically equivalent (for large $|z|$) to a fundamental system of solutions of the unperturbed diagonal system. Moreover, a refinement (in the case of subdominant solutions) and a generalization (in the case of systems depending on parameters) of this result are given. As a first application, we address the study of a class of ODEs with not-necessarily meromorphic coefficients. We provide sufficient conditions on the coefficients ensuring the existence and uniqueness of an asymptotic fundamental system of solutions, and we give an explicit description of the maximal sectors of validity for such an asymptotics. Furthermore, we also focus on distinguished examples in this class of ODEs arising in the context of open conjectures in Mathematical Physics relating Integrable Quantum Field Theories and affine opers ($ODE/IM\,\,correspondence$). Our results fill two significant gaps in the mathematical literature pertaining to these conjectural relations. As a second application, we consider the classical case of ODEs with meromorphic coefficients. Under an $adequateness$ condition on the coefficients, we show that our results reproduce (with a shorter proof) the main asymptotic existence theorems of Y. Sibuya [Sib62, Sib68] and W. Wasow [Was65] in their optimal refinements.

This article accompanies the author's lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2022. Abstract:We consider the problem of computing numerical invariants of programs, for instance bounds on the values of numerical program variables. More specifically, we study the problem of performing static analysis by abstract interpretation using template linear constraint domains. Such invariants can be obtained by Kleene iterations that are, in order to guarantee termination, accelerated by widening operators. In many cases, however, applying this form of extrapolation leads to invariants that are weaker than the strongest inductive invariant that can be expressed within the abstract domain in use. Another well-known source of imprecision of traditional abstract interpretation techniques stems from their use of join operators at merge nodes in the control flow graph. The mentioned weaknesses may prevent these methods from proving safety properties. The technique we develop in this article addresses both of these issues: contrary to Kleene iterations accelerated by widening operators, it is guaranteed to yield the strongest inductive invariant that can be expressed within the template linear constraint domain in use. It also eschews join operators by distinguishing all paths of loop-free code segments. Formally speaking, our technique computes the least fixpoint within a given template linear constraint domain of a transition relation that is succinctly expressed as an existentially quantified linear real arithmetic formula. In contrast to previously published techniques that rely on quantifier elimination, our algorithm is proved to have optimal complexity: we prove that the decision problem associated with our fixpoint problem is in the second level of the polynomial-time hierarchy.

Abstract:We study linear recurrences of Eulerian type of the form<math>Pn(v)=(α(v)n+γ(v))Pn−1(v)+β(v)(1−v)Pn−1′(v)(n⩾1),</math> with <math>P0(v)</math> given, where <math>α(v),β(v)</math> and <math>γ(v)</math> are in most cases polynomials of low degrees. We characterize the various limit laws of the coefficients of <math>Pn(v)</math> for large n using the method of moments and analytic combinatorial tools under varying <math>α(v),β(v)</math> and <math>γ(v)</math>, and apply our results to more than two hundred of concrete examples when <math>β(v)≠0</math> and more than three hundred when <math>β(v)=0</math> that we gathered from the literature and from Sloane's OEIS database. The limit laws and the convergence rates we worked out are almost all new and include normal, half-normal, Rayleigh, beta, Poisson, negative binomial, Mittag-Leffler, Bernoulli, etc., showing the surprising richness and diversity of such a simple framework, as well as the power of the approaches used.

Abstract:We introduce templates for exponential asymptotic expansions that, in contrast to matched asymptotic approaches, enable the simultaneous satisfaction of both boundary values in classes of linear and nonlinear equations that are singularly perturbed with an asymptotic parameter epsilon \to 0+ and have a single boundary layer at one end of the interval. For linear equations, the template is a transseries that takes the form of a sliding ladder of exponential scales. For nonlinear equations, the transseries template is a two-dimensional array of exponential scales that tilts and realigns asymptotic balances as the interval is traversed. An exponential asymptotic approach also reveals how boundary value problems force the surprising presence of transseries in the linear case and negative powers of epsilon terms in the series beyond all orders in the nonlinear case. We also demonstrate how these transseries can be resummed to generate multiple-scales-type approximations that can generate uniformly better approximations to the exact solution out to larger values of the perturbation parameter. Finally we show for a specific example how a reordering of the terms in the exponential asymptotics can lead to an acceleration of the accuracy of a truncated expansion.
An Order Theory Framework of Recurrence Equations for Static Cost Analysis $-$ Dynamic Inference of Non-Linear Inequality Invariants

Abstract:Recurrence equations have played a central role in static cost analysis, where they can be viewed as abstractions of programs and used to infer resource usage information without actually running the programs with concrete data. Such information is typically represented as functions of input data sizes. More generally, recurrence equations have been increasingly used to automatically obtain non-linear numerical invariants. However, state-of-the-art recurrence solvers and cost analysers suffer from serious limitations when dealing with the (complex) features of recurrences arising from cost analyses. We address this challenge by developing a novel order-theoretical framework where recurrences are viewed as operators and their solutions as fixpoints, which allows leveraging powerful pre/postfixpoint search techniques. We prove useful properties and provide principles and insights that enable us to develop techniques and combine them to design new solvers. We have also implemented and experimentally evaluated an optimisation-based instantiation of the proposed approach. The results are quite promising: our prototype outperforms state-of-the-art cost analysers and recurrence solvers, and can infer tight non-linear lower/upper bounds, in a reasonable time, for complex recurrences representing diverse program behaviours.

The mathematical foundations of the asymptotic iteration method

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to the the asymptotic iteration method (AIM) by means of which we establish the standard AIM connection with the continued fractions technique and we develop a novel termination condition in terms of the approximants. With the help of this alternative termination condition and certain properties of continuous fractions, we derive a closed formula for the asymptotic function $\alpha$ of the AIM technique in terms of an infinite series. Furthermore, we show that such a series converges pointwise to $\alpha$ which, in turn, can be interpreted as a specific term of the minimal solution of a certain recurrence relation. We also investigate some conditions ensuring the existence of a minimal solution and hence, of the function $\alpha$ itself.

Abstract:This is a survey article on an old topic in classical analysis. We present some new developments in asymptotics in the last fifty years. We start with the classical method of Darboux and its generalizations, including an uniformity treatment which has a direct application to the Heisenberg polynomials. We then present the development of an asymptotic theory for difference equations, which is a major advancement since the work of Birkhoff and Trjitzinsky in 1933. A new method was introduced into this field in the nineteen nineties, which is now known as the nonlinear steepest descent method or the Riemann-Hilbert approach. The advantage of this method is that it can be applied to orthogonal polynomials which do not satisfy any differential or difference equations neither do they have any integral representations. As an example, we mention the case of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Freud weight. Finally, we show how the Wiener-Hopf technique can be used to derive asymptotic expansions for the solutions of an integral equation on a half line.

Abstract:One of the grand challenges of Mathematics instruction is to provide students with problems that are both accessible and have a reasonably elegant solution. Instructors commonly resort to resources like course textbooks, online-learning platforms, or other automated problem-generating software to select problems for exams and assignments. However, reliance on such tools may result in limited control over problem parameters, potentially yielding intricate solutions that impede students' understanding. This article centers on Linear Algebra, wherein we devise algorithms for reverse engineering matrices of integers with integer outcomes through operations such as the inverse, LU decomposition, and QR decomposition. The focus is on empowering instructors to manipulate matrix properties deliberately, ensuring the creation of problems that enrich instruction and foster student confidence. The intellectual endeavor of reverse engineering such problems, grounded in both theory and matrix properties, proves mutually beneficial for both students and instructors alike.
