Abstract:We obtain a recursive formula for the number of rational degree $d$ curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ that pass through $3d+1-m$ generic points and that have an $m$-fold singular point. The special case of counting curves with a triple point was solved earlier by other authors. We obtain the formula by considering a family version of Kontsevich's recursion formula, in contrast to the excess intersection theoretic approach of others. A large number of low degree cases have been worked out explicitly.

Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.
Counting Rational Points In Non-Isotropic Neighborhoods of Manifolds

Abstract:In this manuscript, we initiate the study of the number of rational points with bounded denominators, contained in a non-isotropic $\delta_1\times\ldots\times \delta_R$ neighborhood of a compact submanifold $\mathcal{M}$ of codimension $R$ in $\mathbb{R}^{M}$. We establish an upper bound for this counting function which holds when $\mathcal{M}$ satisfies a strong curvature condition, first introduced by Schindler-Yamagishi in \cite{schindler2022density}. Further, even in the isotropic case when $\delta_1=\ldots=\delta_R=\delta$, we obtain an asymptotic formula which holds beyond the range of distance to $\mathcal{M}$ established in \cite{schindler2022density}. Our result is also a generalization of the work of J.J. Huang \cite{huangduke} for hypersurfaces. As an application, we establish for the first time an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of weighted simultaneously well approximable points on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$ satisfying the strong curvature condition, which agrees with the lower bound obtained by Allen-Wang in \cite{allen2022note}. Moreover, for $R>1$, we obtain a new upper bound for the number of rational points \textit{on} $\mathcal{M}$, which goes beyond the bound in an analogue of Serre's dimension growth conjecture for submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^M$ .

Abstract:We compute the singular points of a plane rational curve, parametrically given, using the implicitization matrix derived from the μ-basis of the curve. It is shown that singularity factors, which are defined and uniquely determined by the elementary divisors of the implicitization matrix, contain all the information about the singular points, such as the parameter values of the singular points and their multiplicities. Based on this observation, an efficient and numerically stable algorithm for computing the singular points is devised, and inversion formulae for the singular points are derived. In particular, high order singular points can be detected and computed effectively. This approach based on singularity factors can also determine whether a rational curve has any non-ordinary singular points that contain singular points in its infinitely near neighborhood. Furthermore, a method is proposed to determine whether a singular point is ordinary or not. Finally, a conjecture in [Chionh, E.-W., Sederberg, T.W., 2001. On the minors of the implicitization bézout matrix for a rational plane curve. Computer Aided Geometric Design 18, 21–36] regarding the multiplicity of the singular points of a plane rational curve is proved.

Abstract:We develop a global version of Heath‐Brown's p‐adic determinant method to study the asymptotic behaviour of the number N(W; B) of rational points of height at most B on certain subvarieties W of Pn defined over Q. The most important application is a proof of the dimension growth conjecture of Heath‐Brown and Serre for all integral projective varieties of degree d ≥ 2 over Q. For projective varieties of degree d ≥ 4, we prove a uniform version N(W; B) = Od,n,ε(Bdim W+ε) of this conjecture. We also use our global determinant method to improve upon previous estimates for quasi‐projective surfaces. If, for example, X́ is the complement of the lines on a non‐singular surface X ⊂ P3 of degree d, then we show that N(X́;B)=Od(B3/√d(logB)4+B) . For surfaces defined by forms a0x0d+a1x1d+a2x2d+a3x3d with non‐zero coefficients, then we use a new geometric result for Fermat surfaces to show that N(X́;B)=Od(B3/√d(logB)4) for B ≥ e.

Abstract:We conjecture a lower bound for the minimal canonical height of non-torsion rational points on a natural density 1 subset of the sextic twist family of Mordell curves. We then establish a lower bound that yields a partial result towards this conjecture.

Abstract:In 1922, Mordell conjectured that the set of rational points on a smooth curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $g \ge 2$ is finite. This has been proved by Faltings in 1983. However, Coleman determined in 1985 an upper bound of $#C(\mathbb{Q})$ by following Chabauty's approach which considers the special case when the Jacobian variety of $C$ has Mordell-Weil rank $< g$. In 2006, Stoll improved the Coleman's bound. Balakrishnan with her co-authors in [1] implemented the Chabauty-Coleman method to compute the rational points of genus $3$ hyperelliptic curves. Then, Hashimoto and Morrison [8] did the same work for Picard curves. But it happens that this work has not yet been done for all genus 3 curves. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to compute the complete set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$ for any genus $3$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ that is a degree-$2$ cover of a genus $1$ curve whose Jacobian has rank $0$. We implemented this algorithm in Magma, and we ran it on approximately $40, 000$ curves selected from databases of plane quartics and genus $3$ hyperellitic curves. We discuss some interesting examples, and we exhibit curves for which the number of rational points meets the Stoll's bound

Uniform Bounds for the Number of Rational Points of Bounded Height on Certain Elliptic Curves

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $k$ and $\ell$ a prime integer. When $E$ has at least one $k$-rational point of exact order $\ell$, we derive a uniform upper bound $\exp(C \log B / \log \log B)$ for the number of points of $E(k)$ of (exponential) height at most $B$. Here the constant $C = C(k)$ depends on the number field $k$ and is effective. For $\ell = 2$ this generalizes a result of Naccarato which applies for $k=\mathbb{Q}$. We follow methods previously developed by Bombieri and Zannier and further by Naccarato, with the main novelty being the application of Rosen's result on bounding $\ell$-ranks of class groups in certain extensions, which is derived using relative genus theory.

Abstract:We extend work of Heath-Brown and Salberger, based on the determinant method, to provide a uniform upper bound for the number of integral points of bounded height on an affine surface, which are subject to a polynomial congruence condition. This is applied to get a new uniform bound for points on diagonal quadric surfaces, and to a problem about the representation of integers as a sum of four unlike powers.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the singularities of rational space curves. Two methods are provided to compute the singularities of arbitrary degree curves. These methods are a generalization of the paper (Chen, Wang and Liu. Computing singular points of plane rational curves. Journal of Symbolic Computation 43, 92--117, 2008), which are based on the μ-basis of the rational space curve and on random technique. The μ-basis induces a matrix M which contains all the information about the singularities including the parameter values corresponding to the singularities, multiplicities and infinitely near singularities. These information can be obtained by computing the Smith form of the matrix M . We compare our methods with previous approaches such as generalized resultants, and provide some examples to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.

Abstract:In a recent paper, the author and St\"ohr established a bound on the number of iterated Frobenius pullbacks needed to transform a non-smooth non-decomposed point on a regular geometrically integral curve into a rational point. In this note we improve this result, by establishing a new bound that is sharp in every characteristic $p > 0$.

Abstract:We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

Abstract:Abstract Bounding the number of rational points of height at most $H$ on irreducible algebraic plane curves of degree $d$ has been an intense topic of investigation since the work by Bombieri and Pila. In this paper we establish optimal dependence on $d$ by showing the upper bound $C d^{2} H^{2/d} (\log H)^{\kappa }$ with some absolute constants $C$ and $\kappa $. This bound is optimal with respect to both $d$ and $H$, except for the constants $C$ and $\kappa $. This answers a question raised by Salberger, leading to a simplified proof of his results on the uniform dimension growth conjectures of Heath-Brown and Serre, and where at the same time we replace the $H^{\varepsilon }$ factor by a power of $\log H$. The main strength of our approach comes from the combination of a new, efficient form of smooth parametrizations of algebraic curves with a century-old criterion of Pólya, which allows us to save one extra power of $d$ compared with the standard approach using Bézout’s theorem.

Abstract:Inspired by Bourqui's work on anticanonical height zeta functions on Hirzebruch surfaces, we study height zeta functions of split toric varieties with Picard rank 2 over global function fields, with respect to height functions associated with big metrized line bundles. We show that these varieties can be naturally decomposed into a finite disjoint union of subvarieties, where precise analytic properties of the corresponding height zeta functions can be given. As application, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of large height on each subvariety, with explicit leading constants and controlled error terms.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic growth of the number of rational points of bounded height on smooth projective split toric varieties with Picard rank 2 over number fields, with respect to Arakelov height functions associated with big metrized line bundles. We show that these varieties can be naturally decomposed into a finite disjoint union of subvarieties, where explicit asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of bounded height can be given. Abstract:In this paper we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded anticanonical height which lie on a certain Zariski dense subset of the biprojective hypersurface \begin{align*} x_1y_1^2+...+x_sy_s^2 = 0 \end{align*} in $\mathbb{P}^{s-1} \times \mathbb{P}^{s-1} $ with $s \geq 7$. This confirms the Manin conjecture for this variety.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a regular geometrically integral curve over an imperfect field $K$ and assume that it admits a non-smooth point $\mathfrak{p}$ which -- seen as a prime of the separable function field $K(C)|K$ -- is non-decomposed in the base field extension $\overline{K} \otimes_K K(C)|\overline{K}$. In this paper we establish a bound for the number of iterated Frobenius pullbacks needed in order to transform $\mathfrak{p}$ into a rational point. This provides an algorithm to compute geometric $\delta$-invariants of non-smooth points and a procedure to construct fibrations with moving singularities of prescribed $\delta$-invariants. We show that the bound is sharp in characteristic 2. We further study the geometry of a pencil of plane projective rational quartics in characteristic 2 whose generic fibre attains our bound. On our way, we prove several results on separable and non-decomposed points that might be of independent interest.
