Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:We study rational points on the Erdős-Selfridge curves \begin{align*} y^\ell = x(x+1)\cdots (x+k-1), \end{align*} where $k,\ell\geq 2$ are integers. These curves contain "trivial" rational points $(x,y)$ with $y=0$, and a conjecture of Sander predicts for which pairs $(k,\ell)$ the curve contains "nontrivial" rational points where $y\neq 0$. Suppose $\ell \geq 5$ is a prime. We prove that if $k$ is sufficiently large and coprime to $\ell$, then the corresponding Erdős-Selfridge curve contains only trivial rational points. This proves many cases of Sander's conjecture that were previously unknown. The proof relies on combinatorial ideas going back to Erdős, as well as a novel "mass increment argument" that is loosely inspired by increment arguments in additive combinatorics. The mass increment argument uses as its main arithmetic input a quantitative version of Faltings's theorem on rational points on curves of genus at least two.

In this paper, our focus is on determining the number of -rational points for two specific objects: an affine Artin–Schreier curve given by the equation , and an Artin–Schreier hypersurface given by the equation . Additionally, we establish that the Weil bound is only achieved in these cases when the trace of the element over the subfield is equal to zero.

Abstract:Generalizing the problem of counting rational points on curves and surfaces over finite fields, we consider the setting of n × n matrix points with finite field entries. We obtain exact formulas for matrix point counts on elliptic curves and certain K3 surfaces for “supersingular” primes. These exact formulas, which involve partitions of integers up to n, essentially coincide with the expected value for the number of such points. Therefore, in analogy with the Sato–Tate conjecture, it is natural to study the distribution of the deviation from the expected values for all primes. We determine the limiting distributions for elliptic curves and a family of K3 surfaces. For non-CM elliptic curves with square-free conductor, our results are explicit.

Abstract:We prove that elliptic K3 surfaces over a number field which admit a second elliptic fibration satisfy the potential Hilbert property. Equivalently, the set of their rational points is not thin after a finite extension of the base field. Furthermore, we classify those families of elliptic K3 surfaces over an algebraically closed field which do not admit a second elliptic fibration.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:In 1922, Mordell conjectured that the set of rational points on a smooth curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $g \ge 2$ is finite. This has been proved by Faltings in 1983. However, Coleman determined in 1985 an upper bound of $#C(\mathbb{Q})$ by following Chabauty's approach which considers the special case when the Jacobian variety of $C$ has Mordell-Weil rank $< g$. In 2006, Stoll improved the Coleman's bound. Balakrishnan with her co-authors in [1] implemented the Chabauty-Coleman method to compute the rational points of genus $3$ hyperelliptic curves. Then, Hashimoto and Morrison [8] did the same work for Picard curves. But it happens that this work has not yet been done for all genus 3 curves. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to compute the complete set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$ for any genus $3$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ that is a degree-$2$ cover of a genus $1$ curve whose Jacobian has rank $0$. We implemented this algorithm in Magma, and we ran it on approximately $40, 000$ curves selected from databases of plane quartics and genus $3$ hyperellitic curves. We discuss some interesting examples, and we exhibit curves for which the number of rational points meets the Stoll's bound

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

Abstract:We study the characters induced by suitable level structures of abelian varieties with quaternionic multiplication following the methods of Mazur, Momose, who studied the characters induced by elliptic curves, and Arai--Momose, who studied the characters induced by abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication. Also using results on such characters we show that Shimura varieties parametrizing them have rarely rational points.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $k$ and $\ell$ a prime integer. When $E$ has at least one $k$-rational point of exact order $\ell$, we derive a uniform upper bound $\exp(C \log B / \log \log B)$ for the number of points of $E(k)$ of (exponential) height at most $B$. Here the constant $C = C(k)$ depends on the number field $k$ and is effective. For $\ell = 2$ this generalizes a result of Naccarato which applies for $k=\mathbb{Q}$. We follow methods previously developed by Bombieri and Zannier and further by Naccarato, with the main novelty being the application of Rosen's result on bounding $\ell$-ranks of class groups in certain extensions, which is derived using relative genus theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the singularities of rational space curves. Two methods are provided to compute the singularities of arbitrary degree curves. These methods are a generalization of the paper (Chen, Wang and Liu. Computing singular points of plane rational curves. Journal of Symbolic Computation 43, 92--117, 2008), which are based on the μ-basis of the rational space curve and on random technique. The μ-basis induces a matrix M which contains all the information about the singularities including the parameter values corresponding to the singularities, multiplicities and infinitely near singularities. These information can be obtained by computing the Smith form of the matrix M . We compare our methods with previous approaches such as generalized resultants, and provide some examples to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.
