Abstract:The most common way to find gravitational acceleration, g, in a laboratory is to use a simple pendulum and a clock. Alternately, g can be calculated by measuring time and distance for a free fall. Since the time of free fall in a laboratory is short, there are challenges in measuring the short period. In this article, a low cost technique to measure the time for a free fall using a discharging RC circuit is discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the cost and accuracy issues in measuring the acceleration due to gravity \( g \) in a laboratory setting. Traditional measurement methods include using a simple pendulum and a clock, or calculating \( g \) by measuring the time and distance of free fall. However, due to the very short duration of free fall (for example, the free fall time for one meter is only 0.452 seconds), this poses a challenge for measurement. This paper proposes a low-cost technique that uses a discharging RC circuit to measure the time of free fall, thereby solving this problem. Specifically, the paper introduces an experimental setup that synchronizes the free fall process with the discharging process of an RC circuit by controlling the movement of a switch and a metal strip. When the ball is released from a fixed position, the RC circuit begins to discharge; when the ball strikes the metal plate at the bottom, the circuit is broken, and the voltage value at that moment is recorded. By comparing the voltage changes before and after discharge, the time of free fall can be calculated, and then the acceleration due to gravity \( g \) can be determined based on the distance and time of free fall. This method is not only low-cost but also allows students to better understand the working principle of RC circuits and apply it to solving practical physics problems.
