Abstract:Absolute gravimeter uses optical interferometry to measure the trajectory of the free-falling body in vacuum and gets the best estimate of the gravity acceleration by least squares fitting calculation. In this paper, polynomial fitting is used to suppress the common drift of the interference fringe and the trajectory reconstruction of the free-falling body is realized by using the method of linear interpolation zero-crossing detection. The uncertainty of the measurement introduced by this method is analyzed in detail and the results show that with the maximum frequency of the interference fringes f0=4.17MHz and sampling rate fs=83.3MHz, the gravity acceleration measurement uncertainty introduced is 0.19μGal(μGal=10-8m/s2 ).

Abstract:Abstract Gravity acceleration is an important physical quantity, and its precise measurement results have important applications in practice. According to the principle of measuring gravity acceleration in college physics experiment, a scheme of measuring gravity acceleration by laser interferometry is designed, and the main sources and sizes of experimental errors are analyzed and calculated. Compared with the common simple pendulum method and falling body method, the theoretical results show that our measurement method has higher precision and is feasible to accurately measure the acceleration of gravity.

Abstract:We improve and debug traditional pendulum,utilize the consistency of the starting state of pendulum ball manipulated by electromagnet to adjust the photoelectric door under the lowest equilibrium position of the swinging ball,measure the accurate vibration cycle of the pendulum ball.By analyzing experiment principle and uncertainty we introduce curve estimation of SPSS to analyze experiment data,and obtain the calibration cure between the effective length of pendulum and square of the pendulum period,verify there exist linear relationship between the compound of effective pendulum length and square of the vibration cycle.So,we calibrate the gravity acceleration in the end,analyze and evaluate the measurement data and the experiment result with the confidence probability of 95% uncertainty in order to obtain the more reasonable experiment result.

Abstract:An insightful experimental procedure aimed to measure the gravitational acceleration is reported.The setup is made up of a simple pendulum apparatus, an ultrasonic position sensor, and an ArduinoUno board. The period of oscillations, which leads to the determination of the gravitationalacceleration, is obtained from the time series plots of the position of the sensor associated to thependulum crossing or clearing it periodically. The obtained value of the gravitational accelerationis 9.82 ± 0.10 m s −2 which is in a satisfactory agreement with our local theoretical value of9.78 m s −2 . The percent error is 0.40%

Abstract:Accurate absolute gravimeters are important instruments in applications, such as metrology, geophysics, and geological exploration. Vibration is one of the limiting factors that cause deterioration in measurement accuracy, which includes trueness and precision. The vibration correction method, in which a seismometer is used to record the vibration, provides an effective method to deal with the disturbances. The theoretical analysis shows that the ultimate correction accuracy is limited by the inherent frequency performance of the seismometer. The correction algorithm is an optimization problem to achieve this ultimate accuracy. The selection of the optimization objectives affects the correction accuracy dramatically. Although the real gravitational acceleration is unknown before the measurement is taken, minimization of the standard deviation of the fitting residual for a single drop (SDFRSD) is proven to realize better trueness. Enhanced precision is achieved through minimization of the Type A uncertainty of gravitational accelerations for all drops (UGAAD). Simulations and experimental measurements with the T-1 absolute gravimeter verify the theoretical analysis results. In addition, the results also show that the SDFRSD correction contains the real gravitational acceleration value, while the UGAAD correction exceeds the valid range. Therefore, the SDFRSD correction approach provides better comprehensive accuracy than the UGAAD correction method.

Abstract:This research aimed to determine the acceleration due to gravity (g), by using the methods of free fall, simple pendulum, physical pendulum and an Atwood's machine in the undergraduate laboratory. The experiments were designed for students to explore, analyze the data and interpreting the results by using the principle of a Physics laboratory. The mean experimental values of acceleration due to the gravity of free fall, simple pendulum, physical pendulum and the Atwood's machine were 9.64 m/s2, 9.67 m/s2, 10.88 m/s2 and 10.47 m/s2, respectively.

Abstract:An accurate determination of gravitational acceleration, usually approximated as 9.8 m s(-2), has been playing an important role in the areas of metrology, geophysics, and geodetics. Absolute gravimetry has been experiencing rapid developments in recent years. Most absolute gravimeters today employ a free-fall method to measure gravitational acceleration. Noise from ground vibration has become one of the most serious factors limiting measurement precision. Compared to vibration isolators, the vibration correction method is a simple and feasible way to reduce the influence of ground vibrations. A modified vibration correction method is proposed and demonstrated. A two-dimensional golden section search algorithm is used to search for the best parameters of the hypothetical transfer function. Experiments using a T-1 absolute gravimeter are performed. It is verified that for an identical group of drop data, the modified method proposed in this paper can achieve better correction effects with much less computation than previous methods. Compared to vibration isolators, the correction method applies to more hostile environments and even dynamic platforms, and is expected to be used in a wider range of applications.

Abstract:Development of gravitation acceleration measurement using simple harmonic motion pendulum method, digital technology and photogate sensor has been done. Digital technology is more practical and optimizes the time of experimentation. The pendulum method is a method of calculating the acceleration of gravity using a solid ball that connected to a rope attached to a stative pole. The pendulum is swung at a small angle resulted a simple harmonic motion. The measurement system consists of a power supply, Photogate sensors, Arduino pro mini and seven segments. The Arduino pro mini receives digital data from the photogate sensor and processes the digital data into the timing data of the pendulum oscillation. The calculation result of the pendulum oscillation time is displayed on seven segments. Based on measured data, the accuracy and precision of the experiment system are 98.76% and 99.81%, respectively. Based on experiment data, the system can be operated in physics experiment especially in determination of the gravity acceleration.
Analysis of Vibration Correction Performance of Vibration Sensor for Absolute Gravity Measurement

Abstract:Absolute gravity measurement refers to the measurement of the absolute value of gravitational acceleration (g, approximately 9.8 m/s2). The precision of absolute gravity measurement is limited mainly by vibration noises. Vibration correction is a simple and feasible way to deal with vibration noises, which corrects the measurement results by detecting vibration noises with a sensor. At present, the vibration correction performance of different sensors lacks systematic analysis and evaluation. In this paper, the theoretical analysis of how the sensor characteristics affect the correction performance is carried out. The vibration correction performances of three sensors, two different seismometers and one accelerometer, are evaluated experimentally in the three cases with different vibration noises. The experimental results show that the correction precision obtained by using low-noise seismometer is limited mainly by its bandwidth and range. In case I i.e. the quiet environment, the standard deviation of corrected results obtained by using both seismometers can reach tens of μGal (1 μGal = 10–8 m/s2), which is close to that obtained by using an ultra-low-frequency vibration isolator. However, in case II i.e. the noisy environment, the standard deviation of corrected results obtained by both seismometers increase to hundreds of μGal due to the enhancement of high-frequency vibration components. This means that the correction performances of both seismometers deteriorate, and the performance of seismometer with narrower bandwidth turns even worse. Moreover, two seismometers cannot even work in case III with stronger vibration noises due to the range limitation. On the other hand, the correction precision obtained by using accelerometer is affected mainly by its resolution which is on the order of mGal (1mGal = 10–5 m/s2). Its bandwidth can reach hundreds of or even thousands of hertz and its range is generally over ±2 g, which is large enough to meet the needs for noisy and dynamic applications. In case I, the standard deviation after correction with accelerometer is larger than that before correction. This is because the intensity of vibration noises in this case is close to or even smaller than the self-noise of accelerometer so that it could not be detected effectively by accelerometer. In case II, the resolution of accelerometer is sufficient to detect the vibration noises effectively. The standard deviation of the results is reduced from 2822 μGal to 1374 μGal after correction with accelerometer, and equal to a precision of 0.1 mGal after 100 drops. In case III where the amplitude of vibration noise rises to 0.1 m/s2 and seismometer cannot work, the accelerometer could still achieve a precision of 0.3 mGal after 100 drops. The systematic deviation is corrected from –1158 mGal to –285 μGal and the standard deviation is reduced from 34 mGal to 3.3 mGal. Therefore, the low-noise seismometer is more suitable for vibration correction in a quiet environment with stable foundation, which could realize a standard deviation superior to hundreds of μGal, while the accelerometer is more appropriate for vibration correction in a complex or dynamic environment, which could achieve a standard deviation of mGal-level. Finally, the present results and analysis provide a theoretical guidance for selecting and designing the sensors in vibration correction applications.
Study on suspension technique of space electrostatic accelerometer

Abstract:Aiming at high accuracy gravity measurement, the satellite gravity surveying technique based on electrostatic suspension is studied in this paper. First, the hardware circuit of the electrostatic accelerometer is given, including the high accuracy displacement measurement circuit, the digital control circuit and the electrostatic force generation circuit. Then, based on analyzing the characteristics of electrostatic suspension, the suspension states are divided into initial levitation state and suspension state, and corresponding digital controllers are designed to suspend the rotor reliably. Simulation and experimental results show that the repeatability of the suspension center of the rotor is less than 0.01 μm, the repeatability of the suspension voltages is less than 0.5 ‰, and the 48 h stability of the suspension voltages is less than 2 ‰, which satisfies the requirements of the space electrostatic accelerometer.

Abstract:The self-attraction effect (SAE) in an absolute gravimeter is a kind of systematic error due to the gravitation of the instrument to the falling object. This effect depends on the mass distribution of the gravimeter, and is estimated to be a few microgals (1 mu Gal = 10(-8) m s(-2)) for the FG5 gravimeter. In this paper, the SAE of a home-made T-1 absolute gravimeter is analyzed and calculated. Most of the stationary components, including the dropping chamber, the laser interferometer, the vibration isolation device and two tripods, are finely modelled, and the related SAEs are computed. In addition, the SAE of the co-falling carriage inside the dropping chamber is carefully calculated because the distance between the falling object and the co-falling carriage varies during the measurement. In order to get the correction of the SAE, two different methods are compared. One is to linearize the SAE curve, the other one is to calculate the perturbed trajectory. The results from these two methods agree with each other within 0.01 mu Gal. With an uncertainty analysis, the correction of the SAE of the T-1 gravimeter is estimated to be (-1.9 +/- 0.1) mu Gal.

Abstract:Accurate observations of the gravitational acceleration (g, about 9.8 m/s(2)) provide important geophysical data for use in geophysics, metrology, and geodesy. At present, the most widely used absolute gravimeter determines the value of g by tracking a falling retroreflector in a vacuum using a laser interferometer. The precision and accuracy of the measurement are mainly affected by ground vibration noise. When compared with a vibration isolator, vibration correction offers a simple and convenient way to reduce the influence of ground vibrations. Previous correction methods have used a low-noise seismometer as a detector. However, their performance is limited by the seismometer's bandwidth (which usually ranges from 0.01 to 60 Hz). An optimized correction method combined with digital filtering is proposed here to increase the seismometer's bandwidth numerically. Experimental results show that the accuracy and precision of the corrected results using the optimized method are improved in both relatively quiet and complex vibration environments. And better improvement is shown in complex vibration environment. Therefore, both the feasibility and the superiority of the proposed method have been verified. Further improvements can be achieved by using a higher-order digital filter.

Abstract:Dynamic gravity measurements can improve the survey efficiency of the gravity field, and can play an important role in implementing the basic geological surveys, resource exploration, and geophysical research. Based on cold atom gravimeter, inertial stabilization platform and the movable vehicle device, a system for dynamically measuring absolute gravity is built, and the dynamic measurement experiments are carried out. Firstly, the noise power spectra of the vertical vibration are measured at different moving velocities, and the influence of such a vibration on the measurement of absolute gravity is analyzed theoretically. Besides, the influence on the contrasts and offsets of the atomic interference fringes are evaluated from different moving velocities, then the effect of vibration compensation in the dynamic measurement environment is analyzed. When the maximum moving speed is 5.50 cm/s and the maximum vibration amplitude is 0.1 m/s2, the atomic interference fringes can still be rebuilt based on the technology of vibration compensation. On this basis, the atomic interference fringes are obtained at different values of T and different moving velocities, then the absolute gravity value in the dynamic measurement environment is evaluated. After the correction of the systematic system and subtraction by the initial value of absolute gravity, the final measured result is (–1.22 ± 2.42) mGal. Finally, the experiment on the static absolute gravity is conducted, and the two values are found to be not much different from each other through comparing the static measurement data with the dynamic measurement data. The experiment of dynamic absolute gravity measurement in this paper may provide the helpful reference data for the dynamic absolute gravity measurement with moving vehicles.
Study on the Motion Analysis and Influencing Factors of Simple Pendulum and Double Pendulum

Abstract:The large swing angle simple pendulum experiment caused systematic errors in periodic measurement due to the neglect of air damping. Based on the motion equation of a single pendulum with weak damping and large swing angles, the analytical formula of the cumulative “period” changing with the pendulum is deduced, and the basic law of the decrease of the “period” with the pendulum is analyzed. Combined with the analysis of experimental data, it is verified that it is used. The system error correction is carried out in the large swing angle simple pendulum experiment, so as to reduce the feasibility of random error through cumulative measurement. A double pendulum formed by two single pendulums connected in series is hung at one end, and two single pendulums with the natural frequency of the double pendulum are hung at the other end. First, push the high-frequency single pendulum as the driving force, and the double pendulum swings in an antisymmetric manner; secondly, push the low-frequency single pendulum gently, and the double pendulum responds in a symmetrical manner; then, push the double pendulum in any way, and the high-frequency single pendulum immediately Responds, resonance occurs, low-frequency pendulum response is very slow, but it can still last for several hours.

Abstract:The free-fall absolute gravimeter is commonly used for precise gravitational acceleration measurement. The g value is obtained through quadratic fitting of the position-time data pairs of the freely falling test mass. However, recoil vibrations are generated during the release of the test mass resulting from the movement of the center of mass of the chamber, and errors may arise from these vibrations in the measurement process. To solve the recoil vibration problem, previous researchers have developed the recoil compensation structure to achieve a basically stationary center of mass during the drop. In this paper, counterweights of a variety of masses are tested on our recoil compensated gravimeter, while recoil vibrations are recorded and analyzed accordingly. The multibody simulation indicates that compensated counterweights can significantly reduce the recoil vibration amplitude, making a more precise measurement attainable. In the experiments, accelerometers and seismometers are employed respectively in the simultaneous measurement of recoil vibrations of dropping chamber and reflector. Then all the vibration signals are analyzed and compared, and the outcome confirms the effectiveness of the gravimeter in performing high precision measurement as what is observed in the previous simulations. With a proper design of the counterweight mass, the recoil effect can be significantly reduced during the test procedure, which indicates a potential for high precision measurement.
A Method for Diagnosing the Performance of the Dropping Mechanism in the High-Precision Absolute Gravimeter.

Abstract:The absolute gravimeters used in gravity measurements have wide applications across disciplines. The precision of a classical free-fall absolute gravimeter is limited by the performance of its dropping mechanism. The mismatch between the linear bearings and guideways can give rise to vibrations in measurement and lead to errors in the gravity results. To detect this problem, this research develops a diagnostic approach based on the current analysis of the motor that drives the dropping mechanism. Several dropping chambers are tested under gravity measurement within 12 h to calculate the uncertainty of the mean and be tagged as qualified or unqualified. The status of the dropping mechanism is assessed by applying four parameters of the current data in the time and frequency domains during steady motion and feature coefficients of transient current under wavelet packet decomposition (WPD). The proper ranges of the parameters are identified through comparative experiments. Empirical evidence confirms the feasibility of the parameters and coefficients used to determine whether a gravimeter dropping mechanism meets the requirement of precision around 1 mu Gal. In addition, the analysis based on continuous wavelet transform (CWT) proves its potential to locate the faults in the unqualified dropping mechanism. The proposed diagnostic approach can be applied within 20 times of motor current acquisition, which makes it practicable and helpful in improving and achieving high-precision gravity measurement.

Abstract:This study presents an innovative methodology to augment the accuracy of gravitational acceleration (g) measurements in free fall experiments. Employing smartphones and integrating mechanical switches, our approach utilizes a built-in microphone for precise time measurements during the initiation of free fall. A meticulously designed mechanical switch controls the release of a steel sphere, triggering the timer upon the initiation of descent. Our experimental outcomes showcase a commendable congruence between the calculated g value and the locally accepted reference value, pinpointing g at 9.8274 ± 0.01 m/s2. A salient feature of our method is the utilization of the smartphone’s onboard microphone sensor, offering superior convenience to conventional sensor-based methodologies that require additional equipment. Additionally, our study introduces the seamless integration of open-source software on smartphones, facilitating the direct display and analysis of sound parameters. This integration streamlines the experimental process, contributing to the ongoing endeavors aimed at enhancing accuracy in free fall experiments. Our findings underscore the potential of smartphones and mechanical switches as accessible and effective tools in advancing physics education and scientific investigations.

Reducing the Time Consumption of Vibration Correction Methods for Absolute Gravimeters

Abstract:Free-fall absolute gravimeters are widely employed to measure the gravitational acceleration, commonly known as g. It applies an interferometer to measure the trajectory of a free-falling object. The measurement precision of the absolute gravimeters is limited by the ground vibration. A vibration correction method is often applied in a noisy environment including a moving platform, sometimes it is required to get the g value quickly. It takes much time about 6 min to calculate the g value for one set measurement (no less than 25 drops). In order to quickly and accurately obtain the g value in hostile environments, there are two modifying methods including applying a lower sampling rate than original sampling rate of the vibration signal, and applying a division on trajectory data method. An equally spaced in distance division method is used. The results show, when applying the sampling rate of the vibration signal 1 MHz and the division factor 14, the total consumption time is reduced to one quarter of the time, from about 6 min to 1.5 min. Meanwhile, the error between the corrected results with and without the modifying methods is below 10 μGal, and the standard deviation of the g value has no significant change. In the future, promisingly it will be used to quick and precise dynamic absolute gravity measurement in hostile environments.

Abstract:A model of the compound pendulum used for measurement of micro impulses is presented. The effects of pivot friction, air friction and vibration of the stand are simulated through numerical method. To improve the measurement accuracy, it is concluded through the simulation results that the natural period of the compound pendulum should be greater than twenty times the time duration of action of the force being measured. And the moment of inertia of the compound pendulum and the pivot friction should be properly decreased to get a better sensitivity.
