Abstract:A simple way of measuring g in the basic lab with a an Arduino micro-controller is discussed. Experimental results are obtained and compared with values provided by the National Observatory, Rio de Janeiro. Our relative error is 0.1 %.

Abstract:We have designed a simple Arduino-based experiment to study free fall. The experimental data associated to the free and vertical fall movement of a brass saucer are gathered with the help of an ultrasonic distance sensor and an Arduino board. The position–time curves obtained from different initial heights are then plotted and the acceleration of gravity is experimentally determined using Excel.

Abstract:Absolute gravimeter uses optical interferometry to measure the trajectory of the free-falling body in vacuum and gets the best estimate of the gravity acceleration by least squares fitting calculation. In this paper, polynomial fitting is used to suppress the common drift of the interference fringe and the trajectory reconstruction of the free-falling body is realized by using the method of linear interpolation zero-crossing detection. The uncertainty of the measurement introduced by this method is analyzed in detail and the results show that with the maximum frequency of the interference fringes f0=4.17MHz and sampling rate fs=83.3MHz, the gravity acceleration measurement uncertainty introduced is 0.19μGal(μGal=10-8m/s2 ).

Abstract:In this study, a simple Arduino-based experiment was designed to examine the acceleration of the object during free fall and to calculate the value of “g” (acceleration due to gravity). Experimental data on the free fall of a plastic box through the air was gathered with the help of an ultrasonic distance sensor (HC-SR04). Readings were taken at different intervals during the fall to obtain distance time curves. Acceleration during the free fall was then determined by applying the standard kinematic equations. The shape of the distance-time graphs obtained from the experimental setup was in good agreement with the predicted graphs and the calculated values of g lie within the expected range. After repeated experiments, value of gravitational acceleration was found to be 9.805 m/s2. Hardware and software prepared for the experiment are sufficient to examine movement of ordinary objects during free fall, therefore the experiment can be easily settled in a laboratory for the purpose of learning and teaching.

Abstract:An insightful experimental procedure aimed to measure the gravitational acceleration is reported.The setup is made up of a simple pendulum apparatus, an ultrasonic position sensor, and an ArduinoUno board. The period of oscillations, which leads to the determination of the gravitationalacceleration, is obtained from the time series plots of the position of the sensor associated to thependulum crossing or clearing it periodically. The obtained value of the gravitational accelerationis 9.82 ± 0.10 m s −2 which is in a satisfactory agreement with our local theoretical value of9.78 m s −2 . The percent error is 0.40%

Abstract:The current work presents unconventional but instructionally useful approaches to data analysis and modelling that allow for measurements of the acceleration due to gravity, g, using free-falling motion and the popular Tracker software. The two techniques detailed in this article illustrate the employability of the Pythagorean Theorem and the inverse tangent function in modelling free-falling motion that likewise, expectedly, permit for the determination of g. These two mathematical concepts are brought to relevance by strategically situating the origin of the coordinate system at an appropriate point. The models returned values of the gravitational acceleration that are comparable to that by the traditional technique, the one directly based on the vertical position-time data. Additionally, the unconventional free-fall data analyses presented in this paper suggest extra and insightful activities for the students, exercises on a notably less-automated nonlinear curve fitting on a spreadsheet (MS Excel) at most. Ultimately, by applying familiar mathematical concepts associated with a right triangle to nontraditional contexts like free-fall, this laboratory or lecture activity is perceived to spark greater interest of the students and enhance learning by unifying theory and experimental data.

Abstract:These days, smartphones are popular commodities among students in high school and college. Students carry their devices all the time, so why not use such a popular electronic device to measure physical quantities such as g in physics labs? In this work, we report a "multiple tasking" method, a measurement technique that we came up with, for this very purpose. The method is simple: A person holds a ball using one hand and prepares to activate a recording function using another hand. Then the person drops the metal ball and starts the voice memo simultaneously. The time the ball takes to reach the floor is measured by reviewing the sound amplitude recorded, and the magnitude of g is calculated from the time. The error due to the auditory reaction time alone could be about 0.15 s, but we could measure the time in a 0.02-s range at 95% confidence level. A "using sound" technique to measure g was introduced before, but given that triggers such as a latch or something equivalent could introduce larger errors due to the device resolutions, we came up with our own.

Abstract:The most common way to find gravitational acceleration, g, in a laboratory is to use a simple pendulum and a clock. Alternately, g can be calculated by measuring time and distance for a free fall. Since the time of free fall in a laboratory is short, there are challenges in measuring the short period. In this article, a low cost technique to measure the time for a free fall using a discharging RC circuit is discussed.

Abstract:This study presents an innovative methodology to augment the accuracy of gravitational acceleration (g) measurements in free fall experiments. Employing smartphones and integrating mechanical switches, our approach utilizes a built-in microphone for precise time measurements during the initiation of free fall. A meticulously designed mechanical switch controls the release of a steel sphere, triggering the timer upon the initiation of descent. Our experimental outcomes showcase a commendable congruence between the calculated g value and the locally accepted reference value, pinpointing g at 9.8274 ± 0.01 m/s2. A salient feature of our method is the utilization of the smartphone’s onboard microphone sensor, offering superior convenience to conventional sensor-based methodologies that require additional equipment. Additionally, our study introduces the seamless integration of open-source software on smartphones, facilitating the direct display and analysis of sound parameters. This integration streamlines the experimental process, contributing to the ongoing endeavors aimed at enhancing accuracy in free fall experiments. Our findings underscore the potential of smartphones and mechanical switches as accessible and effective tools in advancing physics education and scientific investigations.

Abstract:The article discusses the registration of micro-gravity changes with the MGS-6 Micro-g LaCoste gravity sensor during static measurements. An experiment was carried out to determine how small changes in gravity can be registered using the MGS-6 system sensor. The tides of the Earth’s crust were chosen as the source of disturbance of the field with small amplitude and long-term changes. The tested sensor was placed in a geophysical observatory on a specially designed tripod. Simultaneously on the nearby concrete pillar, the registration of changes in gravity was carried out using the superconducting iGrav gravimeter. The high temporal stability of the superconducting gravimeters and the low noise combined with leading sensitivity of its reading allow it to be considered as a reliable reference source for MGS-6. The article discusses the impact of non-leveling changes of the MGS-6 gravimetry on the reading and determines the size of its non-linear drift. The obtained differences in indications between devices did not exceed 50 μ Gal for 68% of data. The measurements also showed excellent time stability of the MGS-6 measurement system. The data collected during the experiment allowed determining the level of accuracy that can be sought during real measurements using the MGS-6 system on research vessels. They also give an overview of the dynamics of the drift phenomenon of the analyzed research system.

Abstract:The Newtonian gravitational constant (G) is one of the fundamental physical constants. This paper introduces a method to determine the Newtonian gravitational constant based on the principle of free fall, through measuring the change of gravity from the disturbed mass with an FG5/112 absolute gravimeter. This method has good repeatability. The measurement precision can be improved by error control and a large number of experiments. The constant G is obtained by two experiments, and the measured value is (6.6665±0.0554)×10−11 m3/(kg·s2).

Abstract:Abstract We show that the gravitational acceleration g near Earth’s surface can be easily determined with high accuracy by conducting the usual free fall experiment in high school or college physics laboratories. Unlike the conventional method of data analysis that uses formulas without taking air resistance into account, we consider the effect of air drag and solve the position function for the free falling object. The position function is then used to fit the experimental data and thus, determine the value of g . The average value of the determined g is found to differ from the gravitational field measured by gravimeters near the experimental site by 0.2%.

Abstract:This paper explored to calculate the value of the acceleration due to gravity (g) by using primarily of balloons, mass hanger, an acoustic stopwatch of a smartphone. The acoustic stopwatch used is based on the PhyPhox mobile application. The independent variable was the drop height and the dependent variable is the recorded time. There were seven drop heights and time were recorded for each fall with three repetitions to reduce the error. The computed value of g was comparable to the average value of g of 9.81 m/s and the locally accepted value. The measure value of g is also similar to the findings of various literatures. This proved the ability of the application to measure the drop time with reducing random or systematic errors. The data gathered from this research has proven that simple mobile phone has now tremendous impact in the classroom experiments. The students now can compute g more than visualizing it. The use of an acoustic stopwatch from a mobile phone in a physics experiment can be a great way for students to gain a better understanding of measuring and interpreting data accurately. The app makes it easier for teachers to demonstrate the concept of measurements and how to properly record them by using audio cues from the phone's built-in microphone.

Abstract:We have built an atom interferometer that can measure g, the local acceleration due to gravity, with a resolution of Δg/g = 2 × 10−8 after a single 1.3 s measurement cycle, 3 × 10−9 after 1 min and 1 × 10−10 after two days of integration time. The difference between our value for g and one obtained by a falling corner-cube optical interferometer is (7 ± 7) × 10−9 g. The atom interferometer uses velocity-selective stimulated Raman transitions and laser-cooled caesium atoms in an atomic fountain. We extend previous methods of analysing the interferometer to include the effects of a gravitational gradient. We also present detailed experimental and theoretical studies of potential systematic errors and noise sources.

Abstract:We have recently completed a measurement of the Newtonian constant of gravitation G using atomic interferometry. Our result is G =6.67191(77)(62)×10 −11 m 3 kg −1 s −2 where the numbers in parenthesis are the type A and type B standard uncertainties, respectively. An evaluation of the measurement uncertainty is presented and the perspectives for improvement are discussed. Our result is approaching the precision of experiments based on macroscopic sensing masses showing that the next generation of atomic gradiometers could reach a total relative uncertainty in the 10 parts per million range.

Abstract:We present measurements on Earth's gravitational acceleration (g) using an in-house developed cold atom gravimeter (CAG) in an atomic fountain geometry. In the setup, the laser cooled $^{87}Rb$ atoms are launched vertically up in the fountain geometry and Doppler sensitive two-photon Raman pulse atom interferometry is applied to detect the gravitational acceleration experienced by the atoms. Using our gravimeter setup, we have measured the local value of 'g' in our laboratory with sensitivity of 621 $\mu$Gal for integration time of 1350 s.

Abstract:We measured Newton's gravitational constant G using a new torsion balance method. Our technique greatly reduces several sources of uncertainty compared to previous measurements: (1) It is insensitive to anelastic torsion fiber properties; (2) a flat plate pendulum minimizes the sensitivity due to the pendulum density distribution; (3) continuous attractor rotation reduces background noise. We obtain G = (6.674215+/-0.000092) x 10(-11) m3 kg(-1) s(-2); the Earth's mass is, therefore, M = (5.972245+/-0.000082) x 10(24) kg and the Sun's mass is M = (1.988435+/-0.000027) x 10(30) kg.

Abstract:We demonstrated the measurement of the Earth's gravitational acceleration ( g ) by using Lato Lato, a popular children's toy in Indonesia right now. We compared the obtained results with the value of the measured gravitational acceleration using a simple pendulum. The smart phone was used to record the videos of the experiment, and then we analysed the video to obtain the deviation angle (θ) and duration of the pendulum movement (t) of Lato Lato to determine g . The value obtained from the measurement using Lato Lato is ( 9.776 ± 0.007 ) m s −2 , while 9.774 ± 0.048 m s −2 is obtained by using a simple pendulum. It shows that the accuracy levels of the two techniques are comparable. Therefore, Lato Lato can be used as a simple and low-cost experimental tool for measuring the acceleration due to gravity. It is supposed to become an addition to methods that are commonly used, such as a simple pendulum and a physical pendulum.

Abstract:Drop tower is the most common ground-based facility to provide microgravity environment and widely used in many science experiments. A differential space accelerometer has been proposed to test the spin-gravity interaction between rotating extended bodies onboard a drag-free satellite. In order to assist design and test of this inertial sensor in a series of ground- based pre-flight experiments, it is very important to know accurately the residual acceleration of drop towers. In this report, a sensitive instrument for this purpose was built with a high-performance servo quartz accelerometer and the dedicated interface electronics design providing small full-scale range and high sensitivity, up to 136.8 V/ g 0 . The residual acceleration at the Beijing drop tower was measured using two different drop capsules. The experimental result shows that the microgravity level of the free-falling double capsule is better than 2 × 10 −4 g 0 (Earth’s gravity). The measured data in this report provides critical microgravity information for design of the following ground experiments.

Abstract:Abstract Gravity acceleration is an important physical quantity, and its precise measurement results have important applications in practice. According to the principle of measuring gravity acceleration in college physics experiment, a scheme of measuring gravity acceleration by laser interferometry is designed, and the main sources and sizes of experimental errors are analyzed and calculated. Compared with the common simple pendulum method and falling body method, the theoretical results show that our measurement method has higher precision and is feasible to accurately measure the acceleration of gravity.
On-ground Experimental Investigation of a Linear Acceleration Based Body Mass Measurement Method

Abstract:Human body mass measurements in micro-gravity environments are important for health monitoring of astronauts in long-term manned space missions.This study analyzes the linear acceleration method which is based on Newton's second law.An on-ground experimental platform was developed consisting of a spring-cam assembly to generate a constant pulling force to linearly accelerate the human body and an air bearing table to simulate the micro-gravity environment in the horizontal directions.Rigid weights from 45-90 kg and 15 human subjects from 50-60 kg were tested.The results show that the method satisfies Newton's second law with measurement accuracy of 0.2 kg for the rigid weights.Good repeatability is observed for the humans and the accuracy is approximately 0.5 kg.The results indicate that the linear acceleration method is useful for human body mass measurements in micro-gravity environments and that the measurement error can be reduced by longer motion times,better body restriction and proper training of the human subjects.
