Abstract:In this paper, we study certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on the blowup of the projective plane in at least 10 very general points. Moduli spaces of sheaves on general type surfaces may be nonreduced, reducible and even disconnected. In contrast, moduli spaces of sheaves on minimal rational surfaces and certain del Pezzo surfaces are irreducible and smooth along the locus of stable bundles. We find examples of moduli spaces of vector bundles on more general blowups of the projective plane that are disconnected and have components of different dimensions. In fact, assuming the SHGH Conjecture, we can find moduli spaces with arbitrarily many components of arbitrarily large dimension.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”

Abstract:We provide several families of compact complex curves embedded in smooth complex surfaces such that no neighborhood of the curve can be embedded in an algebraic surface. Different constructions are proposed, by patching neighborhoods of curves in projective surfaces, and blowing down exceptional curves. These constructions generalize examples recently given by S. Lvovski. One of our non algebraic argument is based on an extension theorem of S. Ivashkovich.

Abstract:We study the problem of counting pointed curves of fixed complex structure in blow-ups of projective space at general points. The geometric and virtual (Gromov-Witten) counts are found to agree asymptotically in the Fano (and some $(-K)$-nef) examples, but not in general. For toric blow-ups, geometric counts are expressed in terms of integrals on products of Jacobians and symmetric products of the domain curves, and evaluated explicitly in genus 0 and in the case of $\text{Bl}_q(\mathbb{P}^r)$. Virtual counts for $\text{Bl}_q(\mathbb{P}^r)$ are also computed via the quantum cohomology ring.

Birational geometry of blowups via Weyl chamber decompositions and actions on curves

Abstract:In this paper we study the birational geometry of $X$, a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ blown up at $s$ general points. We obtain a characterization of a special class of subvarieties, which we call Weyl $r$-planes, each of them being swept out by one $(n-r)$-moving curve class. For Mori dream spaces $X$, we unify different previous approaches, by reinterpreting the description of the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone in terms of these curve classes; in this case all relevant orbits are finite. For general $s$, we prove that Weyl $r$-planes are infinite and continue to appear as stable base locus. This yields the definition of the Weyl chamber decomposition of the pseudoeffective cone of divisors, that is a coarsening of its Mori chamber decomposition, when the latter can be defined. We prove that the combinatorics of such chamber decomposition obeys the Weyl group action on curves. We conjecture that for $s=n+4$ the Weyl and the Mori chamber decompositions coincide.

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:We describe an obstruction to smoothing stable maps in smooth projective varieties, which generalizes some previously known obstructions. Our obstruction comes from the non-existence of certain rational functions on the ghost components, with prescribed simple poles and residues.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a smooth $k$-dimensional hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{k+1}$ and $X \supset \Gamma$ a smooth $n$-dimensional Fano hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ where $n\geq 3$ and $k\geq 1$. Let $Y \rightarrow X$ be the blowup of $X$ along $\Gamma$. We give a constructive proof that $Y$ is a Mori dream space. In particular, we describe its Mori chamber decomposition and the associated birational models of $Y$. We classify for which $X$ and $\Gamma$ the variety $Y$ is a Fano manifold and we initiate the study of K-stability of $Y$.

Abstract:Let X be the blow-up of the projective plane in a finite set of very general points. We deduce from the work of Uehara that X has only standard autoequivalences, no nontrivial Fourier-Mukai partners, and admits no spherical objects. If X is the blow-up of the projective plane in 9 very general points, we provide an alternate and direct proof of the corresponding statement. Further, we show that the same result holds if X is a blow-up of finitely many points in a minimal surface of nonnegative Kodaira dimension which contains no (-2)-curves. Independently, we characterize spherical objects on blow-ups of minimal surfaces of positive Kodaira dimension.

On the Geometry of a Fake Projective Plane with $21$ Automorphisms

Abstract:A fake projective plane is a complex surface with the same Betti numbers as $\mathbb{C} P^2$ but not biholomorphic to it. We study the fake projective plane $\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2 = (a = 7, p = 2, \emptyset, D_3 2_7)$ in the Cartwright-Steger classification. In this paper, we exploit the large symmetries given by $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2) = C_7 \rtimes C_3$ to construct an embedding of this surface into $\mathbb{C} P^5$ as a system of $56$ sextics with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-7})$. For each torsion line bundle $T \in \operatorname{Pic}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2)$, we also compute and study the linear systems $|nH + T|$ with small $n$, where $H$ is an ample generator of the Néron-Severi group.

Abstract:In this paper we show the existence of cones over a 8-dimensional rational sphere at the boundary of the Mori cone of the blow-up of the plane at very general points. This gives evidence for De Fernex's strong -conjecture, which is known to imply Nagata's conjecture. This also implies the existence of a multitude of good and wonderful rays as defined in Ciliberto et al. (Clay Math Proc 18:185–203, 2013).

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:We consider the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to a projective space blown up at finitely many points. We show that the homology of this mapping space equals that of the space of continuous maps that intersect the exceptional divisors positively, once the degree of the maps is sufficiently positive compared to the degree of homology. The proof uses a version of Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. As a consequence, we obtain a homological stability result for rational curves on the degree $5$ del Pezzo surface, which is analogous to a case of the Batyrev--Manin conjectures on rational point counts.

Abstract:We investigate some aspects of the geometry of two classical generalisations of the Hilbert schemes of points. Precisely, we show that parity conjecture for $\text{Quot}_r^d\mathbb{A}^3$ already fails for $d=8$ and $r=2$ and that lots of the elementary components of the nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth quasi-projective varieties of dimension at least 4 are generically non-reduced. We also deduce that nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces have generically non-reduced components. Finally, we give an infinite family of elementary components of the classical Hilbert schemes of points.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety with a semisimple quantum cohomology. It is known that the blowup $\operatorname{Bl}_{\rm pt}(X)$ of $X$ at one point also has semisimple quantum cohomology. In particular, the monodromy group of the quantum cohomology of $\operatorname{Bl}_{\rm pt}(X)$ is a reflectiongroup. We found explicit formulas for certain generators of the monodromy group of the quantum cohomology of $\operatorname{Bl}_{\rm pt}(X)$ depending only on the geometry of the exceptional divisor.

Abstract:We prove the non-existence of special generic maps on $3$-dimensional complex projective space as our new result and a corollary by several methods. Special generic maps are generalizations of Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres and canonical projections of unit spheres are special generic. Our paper focuses on such maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds of classes containing the $3$-dimensional complex projective space. The differentiable structures of spheres admitting special generic maps are known to be restricted strongly. Special generic maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds and projective spaces have been studied by various people including the author. The (non-)existence and construction are main problems. Studies on such maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds whose dimensions are greater than $5$ have been difficult.
