Abstract:We construct a non-full exceptional collection of maximal length consisting of line bundles on the blow-up of the projective plane in 10 points in general position. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture of Kuznetsov and to a conjecture of Orlov.

Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture of Orlov asks whether the existence of a full exceptional collection implies rationality of the underlying variety. We prove this conjecture for arithmetic toric varieties over general fields. We also investigate a slight generalization of this conjecture, where the endomorphism algebras of the exceptional objects are allowed to be separable field extensions of the base field. We show this generalization is false by exhibiting a geometrically rational, smooth, projective threefold over the the field of rational numbers that possesses a full étale-exceptional collection but not a rational point. The counterexample comes from twisting a non-retract rational variety with a rational point and full étale-exceptional collection by a torsor that is invisible to Brauer invariants. Along the way, we develop some tools for linearizing objects, including a group that controls linearizations.

Abstract:In this paper we show that any exceptional collection of line bundles of length 6 on the blow-up of P3 at a point (a line, or a twisted cubic curve) is full. This partially gives a positive answer on the fullness conjecture of Kuznetsov in these examples.

Abstract:Motivated by homological mirror symmetry, this paper constructs explicit full exceptional collections for the canonical stacks associated with the series of log del Pezzo surfaces constructed by Johnson and Kollár. These surfaces have cyclic quotient, non-Gorenstein, singularities. The construction involves both the $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ McKay correspondence, and the study of the minimal resolutions of the surfaces, which are birational to degree two del Pezzo surfaces. We show that a degree two del Pezzo surface arises in this way if and only if it admits a generalized Eckardt point, and in the course of the paper we classify the blow-ups of $\mathbb{P}^2$ giving rise to them. Our result on the adjoints of the functor of Ishii-Ueda applies to any finite small subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$.

Abstract:We observe that there exists an associative finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $A$ of finite global dimension, such that the bounded derived category $D^b(A)$ of finite dimensional $A$-modules admits an admissible subcategory $\mathcal{P}$ with vanishing Grothendieck group $K_0(\mathcal{P})$. In other words, $\mathcal{P} \subseteq D^b(A)$ is a phantom. Using tilting theory, this follows directly from a very recent example of a phantom for a smooth rational surface due to Krah. By work of Aihara & Iyama, this also leads to new examples of presilting objects that cannot be completed to silting objects.

Abstract:Abstract The first published non-trivial examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number are due to Persson, who constructed surfaces with maximal Picard number on the Noether line $K^{2}=2\chi -6$ for every admissible pair $(K^{2},\chi )$ such that $\chi \not \equiv 0 \ \text {mod}\ 6$. In this note, given a non-negative integer $k$, algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number lying on the line $K^{2}=2\chi -6+k$ are constructed for every admissible pair $(K^{2},\chi )$ such that $\chi \geq 2k+10$. These constructions, obtained as bidouble covers of rational surfaces, not only allow to fill in Persson’s gap on the Noether line, but also provide infinitely many new examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number above the Noether line.

Abstract:Kuznetsov and Polishchuk provided a general algorithm to construct exceptional collections of maximal length for homogeneous varieties of type A,B,C,D. We consider the case of the spinor tenfold and we prove that the corresponding collection is full, i.e. it generates the whole derived category of coherent sheaves. As a step of the proof, we construct some resolutions of homogeneous vector bundles which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let N be the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 with fixed odd determinant. With Sebastian Torres, we previously found a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of N into bounded derived categories of symmetric powers of the curve and, possibly, a phantom block. In this work, we employ the theory of weaving patterns to eliminate the possibility of a phantom, completing the proof of the decomposition conjectured by Narasimhan and, independently, by Belmans, Galkin, and Mukhopadhyay.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.

Abstract:Our results complement D. Calegari's result that there are no hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundles over $S^1$ with trace field having real place. We exhibit several infinite families of pairs $(-\chi, p)$ such that there exist hyperbolic surface bundles with over $S^1$ with fiber having $p$ punctures and Euler characteristic $\chi$ with trace field of having a real place. This supports our conjecture that there exist such examples for each pair $(-\chi, p)$ with finitely many known exceptions.

Abstract:Exceptional Belyi covering is a connected Belyi covering uniquely determined by its ramification scheme or the respective dessin d'enfant. We focus on rational exceptional Belyi coverings of compact Riemann surfaces of genus 0. Well known examples are cyclic, dihedral, and Chebyshev coverings. Using Maple, we identified all rational exceptional Belyi coverings up to degree 15. Their Belyi functions were calculated for degrees up to 6 along with some for degree 7. We also found new infinite series.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1008.3825" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1008.3825">arXiv:1008.3825</a>, Totaro gave examples of a K3 surface such that its automorphism group is not commensurable with an arithmetic group, answering a question of Mazur. We give examples of rational surfaces with the same property. Our examples $Y$ are Looijenga pairs, i.e., there is a connected singular nodal curve $D \subset Y$ such that $K_{Y} + D = 0$.

Abstract:We explain a strategy for distinguishing Brill-Noether loci in the moduli space of curves by studying the lifting of linear systems on curves in polarized K3 surfaces, which motivates a conjecture identifying the maximal Brill-Noether loci with respect to containment. Via an analysis of the stability of Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, we obtain new lifting results for linear systems of rank 3 which suffice to prove the maximal Brill-Noether loci conjecture in genus 9-19, 22, and 23.
