Abstract:Nordstrom-Robinson (NR) code is an optimum non-linear code of length 16, which is employed in Digital Terrestrial /Television Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB) standard of China.In this paper a new soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoder for the NRcode is presented. The decoding process is carried out in two steps. Firstly, an algorithm is performed to find out the most valuable codewords (MVC) set to reduce calculation complexity.Then, approximate soft information is computed based on the MVC set. Theoretical analysis and simulation results both show that the performance of the decoder is very close to ideal algorithm.

Abstract:Staircase codes play an important role as error-correcting codes in optical communications. In this paper, a low-complexity method for resolving stall patterns when decoding staircase codes is described. Stall patterns are the dominating contributor to the error floor in the original decoding method. Our improvement is based on locating stall patterns by intersecting non-zero syndromes and flipping the corresponding bits. The approach effectively lowers the error floor and allows for a new range of block sizes to be considered for optical communications at a certain rate or, alternatively, a significantly decreased error floor for the same block size. Further, an improved error floor analysis is introduced which provides a more accurate estimation of the contributions to the error floor.

Abstract:We introduce a novel universal soft-decision decoding algorithm for binary block codes called ordered reliability direct error pattern testing (ORDEPT). Our results, obtained for a variety of popular short high-rate codes, demonstrate that ORDEPT outperforms state-of-the-art decoding algorithms of comparable complexity such as ordered reliability bits guessing random additive noise decoding (ORBGRAND) in terms of the decoding error probability and latency. The improvements carry on to the iterative decoding of product codes and convolutional product-like codes, where we present a new adaptive decoding algorithm and demonstrate the ability of ORDEPT to efficiently find multiple candidate codewords to produce soft output.

Novel High-Throughput Decoding Algorithms for Product and Staircase Codes based on Error-and-Erasure Decoding

Abstract:Product codes (PCs) and staircase codes (SCCs) are conventionally decoded based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes and iterating between row and column decoders. The performance of iterative BDD (iBDD) can be improved using soft-aided (hybrid) algorithms. Among these, iBDD with combined reliability (iBDD-CR) has been recently proposed for PCs, yielding sizeable performance gains at the expense of a minor increase in complexity compared to iBDD. In this paper, we first extend iBDD-CR to SCCs. We then propose two novel decoding algorithms for PCs and SCCs which improve upon iBDD-CR. The new algorithms use an extra decoding attempt based on error and erasure decoding of the component codes. The proposed algorithms require only the exchange of hard messages between component decoders, making them an attractive solution for ultra high-throughput fiber-optic systems. Simulation results show that our algorithms based on two decoding attempts achieve gains of up to $0.88$ dB for both PCs and SCCs. This corresponds to a $33\%$ optical reach enhancement over iBDD with bit-interleaved coded modulation using $256$ quadrature amplitude modulation.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a low complexity algorithm for extended turbo product codes by considering both the encoding and decoding aspects. For the encoding part, a new encoding scheme is presented for which the operations of looking up and fetching error patterns are no longer necessary, and thus the lookup table can be omitted. For the decoder, a new algorithm is proposed to extract the extrinsic information and reduce the redundancy. This new algorithm can reduce decoding complexity greatly and enhance the performance of the decoder. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Deploying polar codes in ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) is of critical importance and is currently receiving tremendous attention in both academia and industry. However, most of the state of the art polar codes decoders like progressive bit-flipping decoder (PBF) and successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder, involve strong data dependencies and suffer from huge decoding delay. This contradicts the low-latency requirement in URLLC. To address such issue, this paper appeals to the parallel computing and proposes an adaptive ordered statistic decoder (OSD). In particular, we first propose a novel codeword searching metric which proves to be hardware-friendly, and an adaptive OSD algorithm is then developed to adaptively rule out the unpromising codewords, thus significantly reducing the latency. Secondly, to further reduce the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm, we decompose the current code sequence into several independent subcodes, and by handling these subcodes with concatenated adaptive OSDs, a good trade-off between decoding latency and complexity can be achieved. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed adaptive OSD outperforms the conventional decoders in terms of block error rate (BLER) and decoding latency
Low-Complexity Decoder of Analog Fountain Codes for Industrial Internet of Things

Abstract:In this paper, towards the ultra-reliable low-latency requirements of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), we design a low decoding complexity ordered statistic decoder (OSD) for short analog fountain codes (S-AFCs). We first propose a concatenated decoder named soft-OSD (S-OSD) for S-AFCs, where the S-AFCs are concatenated with LDPC codes. Then, we analyze the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) output of inner decoder via the density evolution (DE), the DE results provide the theoretical guidelines to design the discarding criterion (DC) of test error patterns (TEPs) and stopping criterion (SC) to lower the complexity of S-OSD. Simulation results show that the S-OSD can achieve the same error performance with existing decoding algorithms for S-AFCs, and the complexity of S-OSD is greatly decreased, in terms of the average re-encoding number of OSD and operations number per information bit.
Stochastic Flipping Decoding for Short Polar Codes

Abstract:Polar codes are considered a promising candidate for URLLC. Due to the inevitable decoding delay and error propagation brought by successive cancellation (SC) based decoders, the ordered statistic decoding (OSD) algorithm, which has a parallel structure, raises much attention in polar decoding, especially for the short codelength cases. However, the OSD algorithm contains many unnecessary attempts for different error patterns (EPs), increasing the complexity and decoding delay. To address this issue, we propose a novel stochastic flipping decoding (SFD) algorithm. Instead of processing all EPs in the search space, each time, the proposed SFD decoder only processes a small set of EPs generated by stochastic flipping and then chooses the one that has the best distance to get the new reference codeword. The flipping probability vector depends on how the flip of each bit potentially affects the overall distance, and it is updated progressively towards all-zero. The complexity of the algorithm can be further reduced by eliminating all the duplicated EPs. Numerical results show that improved SFD with adequately selected parameters outperforms OSD while the search space of these two algorithms is close.

Abstract:The decoding performance of product codes and staircase codes based on iterative bounded-distance decoding (iBDD) can be improved with the aid of a moderate amount of soft information, maintaining a low decoding complexity. One promising approach is error-and-erasure (EaE) decoding, whose performance can be reliably estimated with density evolution (DE). However, the extrinsic message passing (EMP) decoder required by the DE analysis entails a much higher complexity than the simple intrinsic message passing (IMP) decoder. In this paper, we simplify the EMP decoding algorithm for the EaE channel for two commonly-used EaE decoders by deriving the EMP decoding results from the IMP decoder output and some additional logical operations based on the algebraic structure of the component codes and the EaE decoding rule. Simulation results show that the number of BDD steps is reduced to being comparable with IMP. Furthermore, we propose a heuristic modification of the EMP decoder that reduces the complexity further. In numerical simulations, the decoding performance of the modified decoder yields up to 0.2 dB improvement compared to standard EMP decoding.

Abstract:An iterative soft-decision decoding (SDD) algorithm for Reed-Solomon (RS) codes was derived based on cooperative optimization. The proposed algorithm is a class of message passing algorithms and has solid theory foundations. It can achieve good coding gains over hard-decision decoding (HDD) for RS codes. For (15, 9) RS codes, the proposed algorithm can achieve 0.3～1.3 dB gains over HDD at frame error rate (FER) of 4×10-4. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is low and can be implenmented in practice. The proposed algorithm is a class of soft-in soft-out (SISO) decoding algorithm and can be applied to the iterative decoding for RS-based compound codes such as concatenated codes and product codes.

Abstract:This letter presents a novel low-complexity decoder for turbo product codes (TPCs). The new decoder, denoted as ultra-light decoder (ULD), can perform soft-decision decoding without an algebraic hard decision decoder, which is the core of conventional soft-decision decoders of block codes. Moreover, the unique structure of the ULD enables the design of a new approach to compute the minimum Euclidean distance at each decoding iteration. Therefore, the ULD offers significant complexity and delay reduction as compared with the conventional TPC decoders. Reducing the complexity and delay will enable using codes with high code rates to improve the system spectral efficiency or use powerful codes with low code rates to reduce the transmission power. The system bit-error rate is presented for binary and $M$ -ary modulation schemes over additive white Gaussian noise channels, and the coding gain is given for Rayleigh fading channels. The obtained numerical results show that the ULD offers coding gain that is comparable to the conventional TPC decoders under various system and channel conditions but with significantly lower complexity.

Combining hard and soft decoders for hypergraph product codes

Abstract:Hypergraph product codes are a class of constant-rate quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes equipped with a linear-time decoder called small-set-flip (SSF). This decoder displays sub-optimal performance in practice and requires very large error correcting codes to be effective. In this work, we present new hybrid decoders that combine the belief propagation (BP) algorithm with the SSF decoder. We present the results of numerical simulations when codes are subject to independent bit-flip and phase-flip errors. We provide evidence that the threshold of these codes is roughly 7.5% assuming an ideal syndrome extraction, and remains close to 3% in the presence of syndrome noise. This result subsumes and significantly improves upon an earlier work by Grospellier and Krishna (arXiv:1810.03681). The low-complexity high-performance of these heuristic decoders suggests that decoding should not be a substantial difficulty when moving from zero-rate surface codes to constant-rate LDPC codes and gives a further hint that such codes are well-worth investigating in the context of building large universal quantum computers.

Abstract:Turbo product codes (TPC) have received recent attention as a competitive forward error correction scheme in high-speed communication protocols and Extended BCH based TPC has been accepted by several optical transmission standards. Decoding complexity is one of the major challenges for TPC. This paper proposes a novel stochastic TPC decoder that processes the decoding in a bit-wise iterative manner to reduce the decoding complexity. Further, a hard-decision decoding temporary frozen strategy is proposed to further speed up the convergence and reduce the decoding complexity. The evaluation results demonstrate significant complexity reduction with error correction performance improvements compared to the existing works, making it a promising candidate for practical application.
Staircase codes with non-systematic polar codes

Abstract:In this work we propose an encoding and decoding framework for staircase codes based on non-systematic polar codes as component codes. The staircase structure allows for efficient parallelized decoding, while the polar component codes allow to benefit from the flexible structure and efficient soft-decision decoding algorithms. To enhance the performance of the polar staircase codes, we concatenate the polar component codes with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) outer codes, and we add interleavers within the staircase structure that are specific to polar code properties. The CRCs also allow to substantially reduce the decoding complexity. Simulation results evaluate the gain brought by our proposed techniques, and analyze the dependence of the error-correction performance on code and decoder parameters. Comparison with the state of the art on staircase polar codes shows an improvement in BER up to 0.9~dB, or considerable complexity reduction at the same BER.

A Low-Complexity Diversity-Preserving Universal Bit-Flipping Enhanced Hard Decision Decoder for Arbitrary Linear Codes

Abstract:V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) communication relies on short messages for short-range transmissions over a fading wireless channel, yet requires high reliability and low latency. Hard-decision decoding sacrifices the preservation of diversity order, leading to pronounced performance degradation in fading channels. By contrast, soft-decision decoding retains diversity order, albeit at the cost of increased computational complexity. We introduce a novel enhanced hard-decision decoder termed as the Diversity Flip decoder (DFD) designed for preserving the diversity order. Moreover, it exhibits 'universal' applicability to all linear block codes. For a $\mathscr{C}(n,k)$ code having a minimum distance ${d_{\min}}$, the proposed decoder incurs a worst-case complexity order of $2^{({d_{\min}}-1)}-1$. Notably, for codes having low ${d_{\min}}$, this complexity represents a significant reduction compared to the popular soft and hard decision decoding algorithms. Due to its capability of maintaining diversity at a low complexity, it is eminently suitable for applications such as V2X (Vehicle-to-everything), IoT (Internet of Things), mMTC (Massive Machine type Communications), URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications) and WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) for efficient decoding with favorable performance characteristics. The simulation results provided for various known codes and decoding algorithms validate the performance versus complexity benefits of the proposed decoder.
