Abstract:An improved parallel decoding approach of sum-product algorithm for low-density parity-check codes(LDPC) was presented in order to solve the problem of divergence in decoding iteration with finite precision,.In addition,the reason for improving the convergence speed was discussed detailedly and the pipeline structure was provided.By eliminating the unexpected state in which operation data didn't satisfy input rules due to the finite precision effect thus could not be preceded correctly,the iteration convergence was improved efficiently and led to decoding with no error.Compared with the original parallel approach,this improvement don't involve too much control logic and computational complexity.Simulation shows that the proposed decoding approach over additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel achieves good performance,especially at high code rate,it suffers negligible performance loss compared with the forward-backward approach while reducing the operation complexity effectively.

Abstract:Nordstrom-Robinson (NR) code is an optimum non-linear code of length 16, which is employed in Digital Terrestrial /Television Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB) standard of China.In this paper a new soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoder for the NRcode is presented. The decoding process is carried out in two steps. Firstly, an algorithm is performed to find out the most valuable codewords (MVC) set to reduce calculation complexity.Then, approximate soft information is computed based on the MVC set. Theoretical analysis and simulation results both show that the performance of the decoder is very close to ideal algorithm.

Abstract:The decoding performance of product codes and staircase codes based on iterative bounded-distance decoding (iBDD) can be improved with the aid of a moderate amount of soft information, maintaining a low decoding complexity. One promising approach is error-and-erasure (EaE) decoding, whose performance can be reliably estimated with density evolution (DE). However, the extrinsic message passing (EMP) decoder required by the DE analysis entails a much higher complexity than the simple intrinsic message passing (IMP) decoder. In this paper, we simplify the EMP decoding algorithm for the EaE channel for two commonly-used EaE decoders by deriving the EMP decoding results from the IMP decoder output and some additional logical operations based on the algebraic structure of the component codes and the EaE decoding rule. Simulation results show that the number of BDD steps is reduced to being comparable with IMP. Furthermore, we propose a heuristic modification of the EMP decoder that reduces the complexity further. In numerical simulations, the decoding performance of the modified decoder yields up to 0.2 dB improvement compared to standard EMP decoding.

Abstract:We introduce a novel universal soft-decision decoding algorithm for binary block codes called ordered reliability direct error pattern testing (ORDEPT). Our results, obtained for a variety of popular short high-rate codes, demonstrate that ORDEPT outperforms state-of-the-art decoding algorithms of comparable complexity such as ordered reliability bits guessing random additive noise decoding (ORBGRAND) in terms of the decoding error probability and latency. The improvements carry on to the iterative decoding of product codes and convolutional product-like codes, where we present a new adaptive decoding algorithm and demonstrate the ability of ORDEPT to efficiently find multiple candidate codewords to produce soft output.

Novel High-Throughput Decoding Algorithms for Product and Staircase Codes based on Error-and-Erasure Decoding

Abstract:Product codes (PCs) and staircase codes (SCCs) are conventionally decoded based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes and iterating between row and column decoders. The performance of iterative BDD (iBDD) can be improved using soft-aided (hybrid) algorithms. Among these, iBDD with combined reliability (iBDD-CR) has been recently proposed for PCs, yielding sizeable performance gains at the expense of a minor increase in complexity compared to iBDD. In this paper, we first extend iBDD-CR to SCCs. We then propose two novel decoding algorithms for PCs and SCCs which improve upon iBDD-CR. The new algorithms use an extra decoding attempt based on error and erasure decoding of the component codes. The proposed algorithms require only the exchange of hard messages between component decoders, making them an attractive solution for ultra high-throughput fiber-optic systems. Simulation results show that our algorithms based on two decoding attempts achieve gains of up to $0.88$ dB for both PCs and SCCs. This corresponds to a $33\%$ optical reach enhancement over iBDD with bit-interleaved coded modulation using $256$ quadrature amplitude modulation.

Soft-Information Post-Processing for Chase-Pyndiah Decoding Based on Generalized Mutual Information

Abstract:Chase-Pyndiah decoding is widely used for decoding product codes. However, this method is suboptimal and requires scaling the soft information exchanged during the iterative processing. In this paper, we propose a framework for obtaining the scaling coefficients based on maximizing the generalized mutual information. Our approach yields gains up to 0.11 dB for product codes with two-error correcting extended BCH component codes over the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel compared to the original Chase-Pyndiah decoder with heuristically obtained coefficients. We also introduce an extrinsic version of the Chase-Pyndiah decoder and associate product codes with a turbo-like code ensemble to derive a Monte Carlo-based density evolution analysis. The resulting iterative decoding thresholds accurately predict the onset of the waterfall region.

Abstract:This paper presents a cross-layer iterative decoder for irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes which uses Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) codes. The key idea of the decoder is to use correctly decoded frames as an aid for correcting the remaining erroneous frames. To accomplish this, the decoder exchanges the relevant information between layers by using the cross-layer design method and an iterative decoding architecture. Moreover, the Unequal-Error Protection (UEP) property of irregular LDPC is exploited and both the multiple-error detection and single-error correction capabilities of the CRC code are used. Simulation results show that the proposed decoder outperforms the pure Sum-Product Algorithm (SPA) decoder by a considerable gain while the increase in complexity is moderate. Furthermore, the error floor of irregular LDPC codes in the high Eb/N0 regime can be lowered effectively. The proposed cross-layer iterative decoder can be used for any irregular LDPC coded wireless system to boost the performance and lower the error floor.

Abstract:In this paper, Iterative Unequal Length Search (ULS) Syndrome Decoding for Product Codes is proposed by introducing an idea of unequal length search space. The principle and realization of the algorithm is presented. Moreover, a mathematical performance and decoding complexity analysis is illustrated. Compared to the conventional Equal Length Search (ELS) Syndrome algorithm, experimental results indicate that the iterative ULS syndrome decoding algorithm, not only significantly reduces the decoding complexity, but also improves the error-correcting performance. Because of the balance between the odd and even circuits, the speed of parallel processing is increased and hardware resources are saved accordingly. Simulations results have shown that the proposed algorithm leads to a decrease of 25%~30% of search complexity and a gain of 0.3 dB in the BER performance for various subcodes.

Abstract:Error floor properties of low-density parity-check(LDPC)codes using different decoding algorithms were statistically analyzed utilizing test data from a hardware evaluation platform.The analysis shows that the number of residual error bits in an error codeword after decoding failure using the sum-product(SP)algorithm or the modified min-sum(MMS)algorithm is usually quite small;therefore,LDPC codes can serve as the inner code in a concatenated coding system to achieve an ultra low bit error rate.The analysis also shows that SP algorithm is more suitable for a concatenated coding system than MMS algorithm since less residual error bits occur when using the SP algorithm.Concatenated codes based on the analysis achieve bit error rates lower than 10-10 with a low decoding threshold.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose two novel low-complexity iterative guessing random additive noise decoding (IGRAND) schemes for product codes with enhanced anchor decoding (EAD). Both schemes are motivated by the observation that errors typically occur at the intersections of rows and columns that declare decoding failure by bounded distance decoding (BDD). For the first decoding scheme, termed confined IGRAND with EAD, the generation of test error patterns (TEPs) for the component GRAND is strictly confined to the intersections of invalid codewords which are detected before decoding. To further reduce the decoding complexity, we propose the second decoding scheme where the constraint on the generation of TEPs is dynamically updated according to the hard reliability scores (HRSs) in EAD. Specifically, the codewords are classified into reliable and unreliable subsets by a threshold and the generation of TEPs is strictly confined to the intersections of unreliable codewords during the decoding process. Such a decoding algorithm is referred to as dynamic-confined IGRAND with EAD. Extensive simulation results show that both decoding schemes achieve significant complexity reduction with only negligible performance loss. These results confirm the potential of the proposed decoding schemes in high-throughput applications.

Abstract:The design and implementation of error correcting codes has long been informed by two fundamental results: Shannon's 1948 capacity theorem, which established that long codes use noisy channels most efficiently; and Berlekamp, McEliece, and Van Tilborg's 1978 theorem on the NP-hardness of decoding linear codes. These results shifted focus away from creating code-independent decoders, but recent low-latency communication applications necessitate relatively short codes, providing motivation to reconsider the development of universal decoders. We introduce a scheme for employing binarized symbol soft information within Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding, a universal hard detection decoder. We incorporate codebook-independent quantization of soft information to indicate demodulated symbols to be reliable or unreliable. We introduce two decoding algorithms: one identifies a conditional Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding; the other either reports a conditional ML decoding or an error. For random codebooks, we present error exponents and asymptotic complexity, and show benefits over hard detection. As empirical illustrations, we compare performance with majority logic decoding of Reed-Muller codes, with Berlekamp-Massey decoding of Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem codes, with CA-SCL decoding of CA-Polar codes, and establish the performance of Random Linear Codes, which require a universal decoder and offer a broader palette of code sizes and rates than traditional codes.

Abstract:In this paper, a new decoding scheme is proposed to improve the error correcting performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region by using post-processing. It behaves as follows: First, a conventional LDPC decoding is applied to received LDPC codewords one by one. Then, we count the number of word errors in a predetermined number of decoded codewords. If there is no word error, nothing needs to be done and we can move to the next group of codewords with no delay. Otherwise, we perform a proper post-processing which pro-ducesa new soft-valued codeword (this will befully explained in the main body of this paper) and then apply the conventional LDPC decoding to it again to recover the unsuccessfully decoded codewords. For the proposed decoding scheme, we adopt a simple product code structure which contains LDPC codes and simple algebraic codes as its horizontal and vertical codes, respectively. The decoding capability of the proposed decoding scheme is defined and analyzed using the parity-check matrices of vertical codes and, especially, the combined-decodability is derived for the case of single parity-check (SPC) codes and Hamming codes used as vertical codes. It is also shown that the proposed decoding scheme achieves much better error correcting capability in high SNR region with little additional decoding complexity, compared with the conventional LDPC decoding scheme.

Product Codes with Weighted HIHO Decoding for Energy Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Due to energy and other resources constrained, reliable communication faces a big challenge for a wireless sensor network. Complexity and energy efficiency are viewed as two main factors of design error correct coding. In this paper, first of all, we present a weighted hard-input hard-output product code with the low complexity when the required bit error rate is satisfied for wireless sensor nodes. A reliability matrix from four approximately independent component decoding processes is used to make decisions on whether each received bit is correct or not. Next, the energy efficiencies of turbo product codes using hard-input hard-output and weighted hard-input hard-output decoding algorithm are analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed decoding algorithm can achieve a better tradeoff between reliability and complexity compared to conventional hard-input hard-output and soft-in soft-out decoding algorithms. And it is also shown that the proposed scheme can improve energy efficiency compared to conventional hard-input hard-output algorithm. It is useful for wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Product code is a promising technique for the next generation digital terrestrial broadcasting transmission system, due to its superior error correction performance. In this paper, we propose an Low Density Parity Check-Reed Solomon (LDPC-RS) product code structure, along with a novel hybrid iterative decoding scheme. The decoding scheme combines a hybrid LDPC decoding technique and RS+LDPC hard decision decoding to form a `turbo-like' decoding structure. By ingeniously ranging the order of different decoding techniques as well as performing error estimation and soft value modification at proper stages, the proposed decoding scheme greatly improves the error performance in low SNR regions while reducing the computational complexity in moderate and high SNR regions compared with the simple concatenation of LDPC and RS decoding. Moreover, we propose a rate compatible LDPC-RS product code to further reduce complexity by adaptively choosing the decoding code rate. Simulation results verify the outstanding error performance and suitability for the energy saving applications.
Combining hard and soft decoders for hypergraph product codes

Abstract:Hypergraph product codes are a class of constant-rate quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes equipped with a linear-time decoder called small-set-flip (SSF). This decoder displays sub-optimal performance in practice and requires very large error correcting codes to be effective. In this work, we present new hybrid decoders that combine the belief propagation (BP) algorithm with the SSF decoder. We present the results of numerical simulations when codes are subject to independent bit-flip and phase-flip errors. We provide evidence that the threshold of these codes is roughly 7.5% assuming an ideal syndrome extraction, and remains close to 3% in the presence of syndrome noise. This result subsumes and significantly improves upon an earlier work by Grospellier and Krishna (arXiv:1810.03681). The low-complexity high-performance of these heuristic decoders suggests that decoding should not be a substantial difficulty when moving from zero-rate surface codes to constant-rate LDPC codes and gives a further hint that such codes are well-worth investigating in the context of building large universal quantum computers.

Deep learning based enhancement of ordered statistics decoding of short LDPC codes

Abstract:In the search for highly efficient decoders for short LDPC codes approaching maximum likelihood performance, a relayed decoding strategy, specifically activating the ordered statistics decoding process upon failure of a neural min-sum decoder, is enhanced by instilling three innovations. Firstly, soft information gathered at each step of the neural min-sum decoder is leveraged to forge a new reliability measure using a convolutional neural network. This measure aids in constructing the most reliable basis of ordered statistics decoding, bolstering the decoding process by excluding error-prone bits or concentrating them in a smaller area. Secondly, an adaptive ordered statistics decoding process is introduced, guided by a derived decoding path comprising prioritized blocks, each containing distinct test error patterns. The priority of these blocks is determined from the statistical data during the query phase. Furthermore, effective complexity management methods are devised by adjusting the decoding path's length or refining constraints on the involved blocks. Thirdly, a simple auxiliary criterion is introduced to reduce computational complexity by minimizing the number of candidate codewords before selecting the optimal estimate. Extensive experimental results and complexity analysis strongly support the proposed framework, demonstrating its advantages in terms of high throughput, low complexity, independence from noise variance, in addition to superior decoding performance.

Abstract:In this correspondence, towards the ultra-reliable low-latency requirements of mission critical communications (MCC) in autonomous driving, we design a novel ordered likelihood decoder (OLD) for short rate-compatible (RC) codes. Based on the linear approximation of ordered reliability sequence, we model the probability of test error patterns (TEPs) to the flipping weight (FW), which only corresponds to the flipped positions of most reliable basis (MRB). Then, an integer partitions-aided TEPs generating criterion (GC) is proposed to generate the ordered TEPs in near-optimal. Further, by combining the weighted Hamming distance (WHD) estimation and the proposed TEPs GC, a stopping criterion is given to terminate the decoding when the most likely TEP is found. Comparing to the existing ordered statistics decoders (OSD) for RC coding schemes, simulation results show that the proposed OLD can achieve superior performance in terms of error-rate performance and decoding complexity.
A Low-Complexity Diversity-Preserving Universal Bit-Flipping Enhanced Hard Decision Decoder for Arbitrary Linear Codes

Abstract:V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) communication relies on short messages for short-range transmissions over a fading wireless channel, yet requires high reliability and low latency. Hard-decision decoding sacrifices the preservation of diversity order, leading to pronounced performance degradation in fading channels. By contrast, soft-decision decoding retains diversity order, albeit at the cost of increased computational complexity. We introduce a novel enhanced hard-decision decoder termed as the Diversity Flip decoder (DFD) designed for preserving the diversity order. Moreover, it exhibits 'universal' applicability to all linear block codes. For a $\mathscr{C}(n,k)$ code having a minimum distance ${d_{\min}}$, the proposed decoder incurs a worst-case complexity order of $2^{({d_{\min}}-1)}-1$. Notably, for codes having low ${d_{\min}}$, this complexity represents a significant reduction compared to the popular soft and hard decision decoding algorithms. Due to its capability of maintaining diversity at a low complexity, it is eminently suitable for applications such as V2X (Vehicle-to-everything), IoT (Internet of Things), mMTC (Massive Machine type Communications), URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications) and WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) for efficient decoding with favorable performance characteristics. The simulation results provided for various known codes and decoding algorithms validate the performance versus complexity benefits of the proposed decoder.
