Abstract:V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) communication relies on short messages for short-range transmissions over a fading wireless channel, yet requires high reliability and low latency. Hard-decision decoding sacrifices the preservation of diversity order, leading to pronounced performance degradation in fading channels. By contrast, soft-decision decoding retains diversity order, albeit at the cost of increased computational complexity. We introduce a novel enhanced hard-decision decoder termed as the Diversity Flip decoder (DFD) designed for preserving the diversity order. Moreover, it exhibits 'universal' applicability to all linear block codes. For a $\mathscr{C}(n,k)$ code having a minimum distance ${d_{\min}}$, the proposed decoder incurs a worst-case complexity order of $2^{({d_{\min}}-1)}-1$. Notably, for codes having low ${d_{\min}}$, this complexity represents a significant reduction compared to the popular soft and hard decision decoding algorithms. Due to its capability of maintaining diversity at a low complexity, it is eminently suitable for applications such as V2X (Vehicle-to-everything), IoT (Internet of Things), mMTC (Massive Machine type Communications), URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications) and WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) for efficient decoding with favorable performance characteristics. The simulation results provided for various known codes and decoding algorithms validate the performance versus complexity benefits of the proposed decoder.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to design a hard - decision decoder with low complexity and capable of maintaining the diversity order in application scenarios with short codeword lengths. Specifically, for application scenarios such as vehicle - to - everything (V2X), Internet of Things (IoT), massive machine - type communication (mMTC), ultra - reliable low - latency communication (URLLC) and wireless body area network (WBAN), the paper proposes a new enhanced hard - decision decoder - Diversity Flip Decoder (DFD). This decoder aims to effectively correct errors while maintaining low complexity and maintain the diversity order in fading channels, thereby improving the reliability and performance of communication. ### Paper Background - **V2X Communication**: It depends on short - message transmission and requires high reliability and low latency. - **Hard - decision Decoding**: It sacrifices the maintenance of the diversity order, resulting in a significant performance degradation in fading channels. - **Soft - decision Decoding**: Although it maintains the diversity order, it has a relatively high computational complexity and is not suitable for lightweight applications. ### Paper Objectives - **Low Complexity**: Design a decoder with low complexity, which is suitable for all linear block codes. - **Maintain Diversity Order**: Maintain the diversity order in fading channels to improve the reliability of communication. - **Universality**: Be suitable for all linear block codes and have broad application prospects. ### Solutions - **Diversity Flip Decoder (DFD)**: By using channel state information (CSI), it selectively flips the bits related to the lowest CSI value to correct errors. - **Diversity Order**: DFD can achieve the same diversity order \(d_{\text{min}}\) as soft - decision decoding while maintaining low complexity. - **Complexity Analysis**: For a linear block code \(C(n, k)\) with a minimum distance of \(d_{\text{min}}\), the worst - case complexity of DFD is \(O(2^{d_{\text{min}}- 1})\). ### Main Contributions 1. **Universal Applicability**: DFD is suitable for all linear block codes. 2. **Enhanced Error - correction Capability**: DFD can correct at most \(d_{\text{min}}-1\) errors. 3. **Maintain Diversity Order**: DFD achieves the same diversity order \(d_{\text{min}}\) as soft - decision decoding. 4. **Low Complexity**: Compared with existing soft - decision and hard - decision decoders, DFD has lower computational complexity. 5. **Theoretical and Empirical Verification**: The performance and complexity advantages of DFD are verified through theoretical analysis and simulation results. 6. **Encoding/Decoding at MAC Layer and Above**: DFD is especially suitable for multi - radio systems and can realize the benefits of offloading and replication. 7. **Wide Applicability**: DFD is suitable for application scenarios such as V2X, WBAN, IoT, mMTC and URLLC that require low complexity and high performance. ### Conclusion The Diversity Flip Decoder (DFD) proposed in this paper can effectively correct errors and maintain the diversity order in fading channels while maintaining low complexity. It is suitable for multiple application scenarios with short codeword lengths and has important practical application value.
