Abstract:Staircase codes play an important role as error-correcting codes in optical communications. In this paper, a low-complexity method for resolving stall patterns when decoding staircase codes is described. Stall patterns are the dominating contributor to the error floor in the original decoding method. Our improvement is based on locating stall patterns by intersecting non-zero syndromes and flipping the corresponding bits. The approach effectively lowers the error floor and allows for a new range of block sizes to be considered for optical communications at a certain rate or, alternatively, a significantly decreased error floor for the same block size. Further, an improved error floor analysis is introduced which provides a more accurate estimation of the contributions to the error floor.

Novel High-Throughput Decoding Algorithms for Product and Staircase Codes based on Error-and-Erasure Decoding

Abstract:Product codes (PCs) and staircase codes (SCCs) are conventionally decoded based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes and iterating between row and column decoders. The performance of iterative BDD (iBDD) can be improved using soft-aided (hybrid) algorithms. Among these, iBDD with combined reliability (iBDD-CR) has been recently proposed for PCs, yielding sizeable performance gains at the expense of a minor increase in complexity compared to iBDD. In this paper, we first extend iBDD-CR to SCCs. We then propose two novel decoding algorithms for PCs and SCCs which improve upon iBDD-CR. The new algorithms use an extra decoding attempt based on error and erasure decoding of the component codes. The proposed algorithms require only the exchange of hard messages between component decoders, making them an attractive solution for ultra high-throughput fiber-optic systems. Simulation results show that our algorithms based on two decoding attempts achieve gains of up to $0.88$ dB for both PCs and SCCs. This corresponds to a $33\%$ optical reach enhancement over iBDD with bit-interleaved coded modulation using $256$ quadrature amplitude modulation.

Abstract:In this work we propose an encoding and decoding framework for staircase codes based on non-systematic polar codes as component codes. The staircase structure allows for efficient parallelized decoding, while the polar component codes allow to benefit from the flexible structure and efficient soft-decision decoding algorithms. To enhance the performance of the polar staircase codes, we concatenate the polar component codes with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) outer codes, and we add interleavers within the staircase structure that are specific to polar code properties. The CRCs also allow to substantially reduce the decoding complexity. Simulation results evaluate the gain brought by our proposed techniques, and analyze the dependence of the error-correction performance on code and decoder parameters. Comparison with the state of the art on staircase polar codes shows an improvement in BER up to 0.9~dB, or considerable complexity reduction at the same BER.

Abstract:In order to resolve the problems of large area,complicated routing and high power in decoding low-density parity-check codes(LDPC),this work presented a LDPC decoding approach,which is specified with parity check matrices based on circulant matrices,with structured memory and a corresponding partial parallel decoding architecture.By studying the structured parity matrix,the characteristic of the message passing between bit nodes and check nodes was indicated,and then a predetermined scheme of message storing with high flexibility and efficiency was proposed.Based on this scheme,a partial parallel decoding architecture was provided which significantly reduced the power and critical paths.Simulation of the LDPC in Chinese digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard on FPGA platform showed that the proposed decoding approach over AWGN channel achieved good performance,and suffered negligible performance loss compared with the double precision while effectively reducing the operation complexity.
Higher-Order Staircase Codes

Abstract:We generalize staircase codes and tiled diagonal zipper codes, preserving their key properties while allowing each coded symbol to be protected by arbitrarily many component codewords rather than only two. This generalization which we term "higher-order staircase codes" arises from the marriage of two distinct combinatorial objects: difference triangle sets and finite-geometric nets, which have typically been applied separately to code design. We demonstrate one possible realization of these codes, obtaining powerful, high-rate, low-error-floor, and low-complexity coding schemes based on simple iterative syndrome-domain decoding of coupled Hamming component codes. We anticipate that the proposed codes could improve performance--complexity--latency tradeoffs in high-throughput communications applications, most notably fiber-optic, in which classical staircase codes and zipper codes have been applied. We consider the construction of difference triangle sets having minimum scope and sum-of-lengths, which lead to memory-optimal realizations of higher-order staircase codes. These results also enable memory reductions for early families of convolutional codes constructed from difference triangle sets.

Abstract:The long-haul communication systems can offer ultra high-speed data transfer rates but suffer from burst errors. The high-rate and high-performance staircase codes provide an efficient way for long-haul transmission. The staircase coding scheme is a concatenation structure, which provides the opportunity to improve the performance of high-rate polar codes. At the same time, the polar codes make the staircase structure more reliable. Thus, a high-rate polar-staircase coding scheme is proposed, where the systematic polar codes are applied as the component codes. The soft cancellation decoding of the systematic polar codes is proposed as a basic ingredient. The encoding of the polar-staircase codes is designed with the help of density evolution, where the unreliable parts of the polar codes are enhanced. The corresponding decoding is proposed with low complexity, and is also optimized for burst error channels. With the well designed encoding and decoding algorithms, the polar-staircase codes perform well on both AWGN channels and burst error channels.
On Parameter Optimization and Reach Enhancement for the Improved Soft-Aided Staircase Decoder

Abstract:The so-called improved soft-aided bit-marking algorithm was recently proposed for staircase codes (SCCs) in the context of fiber optical communications. This algorithm is known as iSABM-SCC. With the help of channel soft information, the iSABM-SCC decoder marks bits via thresholds to deal with both miscorrections and failures of hard-decision (HD) decoding. In this paper, we study iSABM-SCC focusing on the parameter optimization of the algorithm and its performance analysis, in terms of the gap to the achievable information rates (AIRs) of HD codes and the fiber reach enhancement. We show in this paper that the marking thresholds and the number of modified component decodings heavily affect the performance of iSABM-SCC, and thus, they need to be carefully optimized. By replacing standard decoding with the optimized iSABM-SCC decoding, the gap to the AIRs of HD codes can be reduced to 0.26-1.02 dB for code rates of 0.74-0.87 in the additive white Gaussian noise channel with 8-ary pulse amplitude modulation. The obtained reach increase is up to 22% for data rates between 401 Gbps and 468 Gbps in an optical fiber channel.

Abstract:Some multilevel codes which are constructed based on polar codes have been introduced recently, and show good performance with elaborately designed rates at each level and special multistage decoder. However, the multistage decoding is usually implemented in a sequential manner, which might yield poor performance at lower levels since the corresponding component codes are decoded without any information from higher levels, and the decoding errors occurred at previous stages could hardly be corrected. Thus, an iterative multistage decoding algorithm for polar code based multilevel codes is introduced in this paper, which could further improve the performance by feeding the reliable information obtained at higher levels back to the first level, and correct the decoding errors occurred at lower levels. Our proposed algorithm has only moderate complexity, and it is found that, the first iteration contributes the most performance improvement.
Stochastic Flipping Decoding for Short Polar Codes

Abstract:Polar codes are considered a promising candidate for URLLC. Due to the inevitable decoding delay and error propagation brought by successive cancellation (SC) based decoders, the ordered statistic decoding (OSD) algorithm, which has a parallel structure, raises much attention in polar decoding, especially for the short codelength cases. However, the OSD algorithm contains many unnecessary attempts for different error patterns (EPs), increasing the complexity and decoding delay. To address this issue, we propose a novel stochastic flipping decoding (SFD) algorithm. Instead of processing all EPs in the search space, each time, the proposed SFD decoder only processes a small set of EPs generated by stochastic flipping and then chooses the one that has the best distance to get the new reference codeword. The flipping probability vector depends on how the flip of each bit potentially affects the overall distance, and it is updated progressively towards all-zero. The complexity of the algorithm can be further reduced by eliminating all the duplicated EPs. Numerical results show that improved SFD with adequately selected parameters outperforms OSD while the search space of these two algorithms is close.
Soft OSD-Sliding Window Decoding for Staircase LDPC Codes in Deep Space Communications

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a soft ordered statistic decoder (SOSD) sliding window decoding (SWD) algorithm for staircase low density parity check (LDPC) codes in deep space optical communications. First, according to the relative position variation of Earth-to-Mars during a conjunction cycle, we model a related optical channel model by calculating the scintillation index in the Gamma-Gamma distribution, which divide three states due to the Sun-Earth-Mars (SEM) angle. Then, we propose the SOSD-SWD algorithm for the rate-adaptive staircase LDPC codes for the channel model, which can approach to 10−4bit error rate (BER) under the three channel states with adjustable decoding parameters. Simulation results validate the impact of different parameters of the SOSD-SWD algorithm, and shed light to tradeoff the achievable BER and complexities under different channel conditions, and the proposed SOSD-SWD algorithm can achieve lower BER than the related SWD algorithms for staircase LDPC codes.

Abstract:A two stage belief-propagation(TSBP) decoding algorithm was developed based on trapping set state(TSS) detection to reduce the error floor of low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes.The algorithm uses belief-propagation algorithm until the TSS is detected,then iterative decoding is attempted to continue through flipping and augmenting the initial values of the possible error bits until the decoding succeeds or the maximum number of attempts is reached.Simulations show that the algorithm significantly reduces the maximum number of iterations for decoding in the error floor region,and with a few additional attempts,the error floor of LDPC codes can be reduced by nearly two orders of magnitude.
Error-and-erasure Decoding of Product and Staircase Codes with Simplified Extrinsic Message Passing

Abstract:The decoding performance of product codes and staircase codes based on iterative bounded-distance decoding (iBDD) can be improved with the aid of a moderate amount of soft information, maintaining a low decoding complexity. One promising approach is error-and-erasure (EaE) decoding, whose performance can be reliably estimated with density evolution (DE). However, the extrinsic message passing (EMP) decoder required by the DE analysis entails a much higher complexity than the simple intrinsic message passing (IMP) decoder. In this paper, we simplify the EMP decoding algorithm for the EaE channel for two commonly-used EaE decoders by deriving the EMP decoding results from the IMP decoder output and some additional logical operations based on the algebraic structure of the component codes and the EaE decoding rule. Simulation results show that the number of BDD steps is reduced to being comparable with IMP. Furthermore, we propose a heuristic modification of the EMP decoder that reduces the complexity further. In numerical simulations, the decoding performance of the modified decoder yields up to 0.2 dB improvement compared to standard EMP decoding.

Abstract:Stochastic decoding can be applied to Low-Density Parity-Check codes in order to achieve high throughput with less area. However, most architectures suffer from large decoding latencies, due to the mechanism of stochastic computation. In this paper, three novel strategies, including the LUT-based initialization, the posterior-information-based hard decision and the Bit-Flipping-based post processing, are proposed in order to reduce decoding latency and hence improve throughput. For the standard IEEE 802.3an (2048, 1723) code, simulation indicates 75.7% reduction in average decoding cycles at 4.5 dB with satisfied bit error rate. Moreover, hardware implementation shows that the area of variable node units is reduced significantly in SMIC 65 nm technology.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel iterative decoding algorithm that exploits the degenerate nature of three different families of quantum low-density parity-check codes, i.e., surface, toric, and row-degree-4 bicycle codes. Such families of codes share harmful trapping sets that constitute symmetric stabilizers, making it impossible for any parallel-scheduled iterative message-passing decoder to converge even for error patterns of weight as low as two. By biasing subsets of nodes in the symmetric stabilizers, the decoder is able to converge to a valid error pattern. Furthermore, the proposed decoder has low decoding complexity - linear in the code's blocklength - and a fully parallel schedule, making it suitable for low-latency efficient implementation.

Fast Convergence Algorithm for Decoding of Low Density Parity Check Codes

Abstract:In this paper, a fast-convergence algorithm is proposed for the decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. By putting more weight on the message update from check node to variable node in current iteration, the proposed method speeds up the decoding significantly. Simulation results show that compared with the standard layered min-sum decoding algorithm, the proposed scheme may reduce about 1/6 iteration numbers for LDPC codes used in DVB-S2, with hardware complexity overhead less than 2%.

Abstract:Polar codes are proved to be able to theoretically achieve the Shannon limit. However, the performance of polar codes with short code length is not well in practice. One widely used method to improve the short length codes is concatenation. Recently, staircase coding structure provides an efficient concatenation scheme for finite length block codes, which the component block code can concatenate itself to improve the coding performance. Thus, in this paper, we propose a high-rate polar-staircase coding scheme with systematic polar codes as the component codes. The polar-staircase coding scheme can enhance the unreliable parts of the polar codes through the concatenation. To achieve the asymptotic performance, which is mainly depending on the decoding algorithms, three soft decoding algorithms are analyzed for our polar-staircase coding. We first investigate the conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding and soft cancellation (SCAN) decoding. The performance of the two algorithms is not well in the short length regime. Then, we adopt and optimize a soft successive cancellation list (SSCL) decoding algorithm for the polar-staircase codes with the tradeoff between reliability and complexity. Simulations show that the SSCL decoding outperforms than the other soft decoding algorithms over the AWGN channels.
A Novel Stochastic Decoder for Extended BCH Code Based Turbo Product Codes.

Abstract:Turbo product codes (TPC) have received recent attention as a competitive forward error correction scheme in high-speed communication protocols and Extended BCH based TPC has been accepted by several optical transmission standards. Decoding complexity is one of the major challenges for TPC. This paper proposes a novel stochastic TPC decoder that processes the decoding in a bit-wise iterative manner to reduce the decoding complexity. Further, a hard-decision decoding temporary frozen strategy is proposed to further speed up the convergence and reduce the decoding complexity. The evaluation results demonstrate significant complexity reduction with error correction performance improvements compared to the existing works, making it a promising candidate for practical application.
Random Staircase Generator Matrix Codes: Performance Analysis and Construction

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a class of codes, referred to as random staircase generator matrix codes (SGMCs), which have staircase-like generator matrices. In the infinite-length region, we prove that the random SGMC is capacity-achieving over binary-input output-symmetric (BIOS) channels. In the finite-length region, we present the representative ordered statistics decoding with local constraints (LC-ROSD) algorithm for the SGMCs. The most distinguished feature of the SGMCs with LC-ROSD is that the staircase-like matrices enable parallel implementation of the Gaussian elimination (GE), avoiding the serial GE of conventional OSD and supporting a potential low decoding latency, as implied from simulations. To analyze the performance of random SGMCs in the finite-length region, we derive the ensemble weight spectrum and invoke the conventional union bound. We also derive a partially random coding union (RCU) bound, which is tighter than the conventional one and is used as a criterion to design the SGMCs. Staircase-like generator matrices allow us to derive a series of (tighter and tighter) lower bounds based on the second-order Bonferroni inequality with the incremental number of codewords. The numerical results show that the decoding performance can match well with the proposed partially RCU bound for different code rates and different profiles. The numerical results also show that the tailored SGMCs with the LC-ROSD algorithm can approach the finite-length performance bound, outperforming the 5G low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, 5G polar codes, and Reed-Muller (RM) codes.
