Abstract:Topological fermions as excitations from multidegenerate Fermi points have been attracting increasing interest in condensed matter physics. They are characterized by topological charges, and magnetic fields are usually applied in experiments for their detection. Here we present an index theorem that reveals the intrinsic connection between the topological charge of a Fermi point and the in-gap modes in the Landau band structure. The proof is based on mapping fermions under magnetic fields to a topological insulator whose topological number is exactly the topological charge of the Fermi point. Our Letter lays a solid foundation for the study of intriguing magnetoresponse effects of topological fermions.

Abstract:The topological phases of non-interacting fermions have been classified by their symmetries, culminating in a modern electronic band theory where wavefunction topology can be obtained (in part) from momentum space. Recently, Real Space Invariants (RSIs) have provided a spatially local description of the global momentum space indices. The present work generalizes this real space classification to interacting 2D states. We construct many-body local RSIs as the quantum numbers of a set of symmetry operators on open boundaries, but which are independent of the choice of boundary. Using the $U(1)$ particle number, they yield many-body fragile topological indices, which we use to identify which single-particle fragile states are many-body topological or trivial at weak coupling. To this end, we construct an exactly solvable Hamiltonian with single-particle fragile topology that is adiabatically connected to a trivial state through strong coupling. We then define global many-body RSIs on periodic boundary conditions. They reduce to Chern numbers in the band theory limit, but also identify strongly correlated stable topological phases with no single-particle counterpart. Finally, we show that the many-body local RSIs appear as quantized coefficients of Wen-Zee terms in the topological quantum field theory describing the phase.

Abstract:A topology-intrinsic connection between the stabilities of Fermi surfaces (FSs) and topological insulators/superconductors (TIs/TSCs) is revealed. First, through revealing the topological difference of the roles played by the time-reversal (or particle-hole) symmetry respectively on FSs and TIs/TSCs, a one-to-one relation between the topological types of FSs and TIs/TSCs is rigorously derived by two distinct methods with one relying on the direct evaluation of topological invariants and the other on K theory. Secondly, we propose and prove a general index theorem that relates the topological charge of FSs on the natural boundary of a TI/TSC to its bulk topological number. In the proof, FSs of all codimensions for all symmetry classes and topological types are systematically constructed by Dirac matrices. Moreover, implications of the general index theorem on the boundary quasiparticles are also addressed.
A Quantized Interband Topological Index in Two-Dimensional Systems

Abstract:We introduce a novel gauge-invariant, quantized interband index in two-dimensional (2D) multiband systems. It provides a bulk topological classification of a submanifold of parameter space (e.g., an electron valley in a Brillouin zone), and therefore overcomes difficulties in characterizing topology of submanifolds. We confirm its topological nature by numerically demonstrating a one-to-one correspondence to the valley Chern number in $k\cdot p$ models (e.g., gapped Dirac fermion model), and the first Chern number in lattice models (e.g., Haldane model). Furthermore, we derive a band-resolved topological charge and demonstrate that it can be used to investigate the nature of edge states due to band inversion in valley systems like multilayer graphene.

Abstract:Topology, a mathematical concept, has recently become a popular and truly transdisciplinary topic encompassing condensed matter physics, solid state chemistry, and materials science. Since there is a direct connection between real space, namely atoms, valence electrons, bonds and orbitals, and reciprocal space, namely bands and Fermi surfaces, via symmetry and topology, classifying topological materials within a single-particle picture is possible. Currently, most materials are classified as trivial insulators, semimetals and metals, or as topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl nodal-line semimetals, and topological metals. The key ingredients for topology are: certain symmetries, the inert pair effect of the outer electrons leading to inversion of the conduction and valence bands, and spin-orbit coupling. This review presents the topological concepts related to solids from the viewpoint of a solid-state chemist, summarizes techniques for growing single crystals, and describes basic physical property measurement techniques to characterize topological materials beyond their structure and provide examples of such materials. Finally, a brief outlook on the impact of topology in other areas of chemistry is provided at the end of the article.

Continuous bulk and interface description of topological insulators

Abstract:We analyze continuous partial differential models of topological insulators in the form of systems of Dirac equations. We describe the bulk and interface topological properties of the materials by means of indices of Fredholm operators constructed from the Dirac operators by spectral calculus. We show the stability of these topological invariants with respect to perturbations by a large class of spatial heterogeneities. These models offer a quantitative tool to analyze the interplay between topology and spatial fluctuations in topological phases of matter. The theory is first presented for two-dimensional materials, which display asymmetric (chiral) transport along interfaces. It is then generalized to arbitrary dimensions with the additional assumption of chiral symmetry in odd spatial dimensions.

Abstract:The notions of a topological phase and topological order were first introduced in the studies of integer and fractional quantum Hall effects, and further developed in the study of topological insulators and topological superconductors in the past decade. Topological concepts are now widely used in many branches of physics, not only limited to condensed matter systems but also in ultracold atomic systems, photonic materials and trapped ions. Papers published in this focus issue are direct testaments of that, and readers will gain a global view of how topology impacts different branches of contemporary physics. We hope that these pages will inspire new ideas through communication between different fields.

Abstract:We provide an elementary proof and refinement of a well-known idea from physics: a chiral-symmetric local Hamiltonian on a half-space has the same signed number of edge-localized states with energies in the bulk band gap, as its bulk winding number. The requirement of non-elementary methods to relate generic and non-generic cases is emphasized. Our hands-on approach complements a quick abstract proof based on the classical index theory of Toeplitz operators.

Topological Green's function zeros in an exactly solved model and beyond

Abstract:The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green's function and show that {in this model} they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite ``lifetime''. We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. This model provides a fertile ground for controlled studies of the phenomenology of Green's function zeros and the underlying exactly solvable lattice gauge theory illustrates the synergetic cross-pollination between solid-state theory, high-energy physics and quantum information science.

Abstract:For D-dimensional weakly interacting topological insulators in certain symmetry classes, the topological invariant can be calculated from a D- or (D+1)-dimensional integration over a certain curvature function that is expressed in terms of single-particle Green's functions. Abstract:We consider the analogy between the topological phase transition which occurs as a function of spatial coordinate on a surface of a non-trivial insulator, and the one which occurs in the bulk due to the change of internal parameters (such as crystal field and spin-orbit coupling). In both cases the system exhibits a Dirac cone, which is the universal manifestation of topological phase transition, independently on the type of driving parameters. In particular, this leads to a simple way of determining the topological class based solely on the bulk information even for the systems with translational symmetry broken by atomic disorder or by strong electron correlations. Here we demonstrate this on example of the zinc-blende related semiconductors by means of the {\it ab-initio} fully-relativistic band structure calculations involving the coherent potential approximation (CPA) technique.
Topological Classification of Insulators: I. Non-interacting Spectrally-Gapped One-Dimensional Systems

Abstract:We study non-interacting electrons in disordered one-dimensional materials which exhibit a spectral gap, in each of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes. We define an appropriate topology on the space of Hamiltonians so that the so-called strong topological invariants become complete invariants yielding the one-dimensional column of the Kitaev periodic table, but now derived without recourse to K-theory. We thus confirm the conjecture regarding a one-to-one correspondence between topological phases of gapped non-interacting 1D systems and the respective Abelian groups $\{0\},\mathbb{Z},2\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the spectral gap regime. The main tool we develop is an equivariant theory of homotopies of local unitaries and orthogonal projections. Moreover, we discuss an extension of the unitary theory to partial isometries, to provide a perspective towards the understanding of strongly-disordered, mobility-gapped materials.

Abstract:As PT and CP symmetries are fundamental in physics, we establish a unified topological theory of PT and CP invariant metals and nodal superconductors, based on the mathematically rigorous KO theory. Representative models are constructed for all nontrivial topological cases in dimensions d=1, 2, and 3, with their exotic physical meanings being elucidated in detail. Intriguingly, it is found that the topological charges of Fermi surfaces in the bulk determine an exotic direction-dependent distribution of topological subgap modes on the boundaries. Furthermore, by constructing an exact bulk-boundary correspondence, we show that the topological Fermi points of the PT and CP invariant classes can appear as gapless modes on the boundary of topological insulators with a certain type of anisotropic crystalline symmetry.
Topological Invariant in Three-Dimensional Band Insulators with Disorder

Abstract:Topological insulators in three dimensions are characterized by a Z(2)-valued topological invariant, which consists of a strong index and three weak indices. In the presence of disorder, only the strong index survives. This paper studies the topological invariant in disordered three-dimensional system by viewing it as a supercell of an infinite periodic system. As an application of this method we show that the strong index becomes nontrivial when strong enough disorder is introduced into a trivial insulator with spin-orbit coupling, realizing a strong topological Anderson insulator. We also numerically extract the gap range and determine the phase boundaries of this topological phase, which fits well with those obtained from self-consistent Born approximation and the transport calculations.
