Abstract:We provide an elementary proof and refinement of a well-known idea from physics: a chiral-symmetric local Hamiltonian on a half-space has the same signed number of edge-localized states with energies in the bulk band gap, as its bulk winding number. The requirement of non-elementary methods to relate generic and non-generic cases is emphasized. Our hands-on approach complements a quick abstract proof based on the classical index theory of Toeplitz operators.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve The paper attempts to solve the problem of the correspondence between topological edge states and bulk states (Bulk-Edge Correspondence, BEC) in a 1D chain. Specifically, the authors aim to prove that the number of edge localized states (with signs) in the half-space of a local Hamiltonian with chiral symmetry is the same as the winding number of its bulk states. This problem has been widely studied in physics but usually requires complex mathematical methods to handle the relationship between generic and non-generic cases. The authors hope to reprove and refine this result using a more elementary method and emphasize the importance of non-elementary methods when dealing with non-generic cases. ### Main Contributions 1. **Elementary Proof**: The authors provide a more elementary method to prove the relationship between the number of edge localized states in the half-space of a chiral symmetric local Hamiltonian and the winding number of its bulk states. 2. **Handling Non-generic Cases**: The authors emphasize the importance of using non-elementary methods (such as operator/spectral perturbation theory) when dealing with non-generic cases. 3. **Finite Range Hamiltonians**: For finite range Hamiltonians, the authors reformulate the eigenvalue problem as a linear recurrence equation and discuss the role of self-adjointness in it. 4. **Impact of Boundary Conditions**: The authors explore the impact of different boundary conditions on 1D BEC, particularly the choice of Dirichlet boundary conditions. 5. **Connection to Classical Toepitz Index Theory**: The authors further elucidate the relationship between elementary methods and classical Toepitz index theory. ### Specific Content - **Chiral Symmetry and Bulk Winding Number**: The authors define chiral symmetric Hamiltonians and introduce the concept of the bulk winding number. - **Definition of Edge States**: Edge states are defined as eigen-solutions that decay with position in the half-space. - **Limitations of Elementary Methods**: The authors discuss the limitations of elementary methods in handling non-generic cases and propose the necessity of non-elementary methods. - **Eigenvalue Problem of Finite Range Hamiltonians**: The authors transform the eigenvalue problem into a linear recurrence equation and discuss the role of self-adjointness in it. - **Impact of Boundary Conditions**: The authors explore the impact of different boundary conditions on 1D BEC, particularly the choice of Dirichlet boundary conditions. - **Connection to Classical Toepitz Index Theory**: The authors further elucidate the relationship between elementary methods and classical Toepitz index theory. ### Conclusion The paper reproves the relationship between the number of edge localized states in the half-space of a chiral symmetric local Hamiltonian and the winding number of its bulk states using elementary methods, and emphasizes the importance of non-elementary methods when dealing with non-generic cases. These results not only provide new perspectives for understanding 1D BEC but also lay the foundation for further research on other types of BEC.
