Abstract:Formulation and supersymmetry localization of superconformal indices for $\mathcal{N}=2B$ superconformal quantum mechanics are reviewed by providing a generalization to fixed point submanifolds of resolved target space geometries, and future applications to gauged scaling quivers are discussed.

Abstract:Superconformal `type B' quantum mechanical sigma models arise in a variety of interesting contexts, such as the description of D-brane bound states in an AdS$_2$ decoupling limit. Focusing on $N=2B$ models, we study superconformal indices which count short multiplets and provide an alternative to the standard Witten index, as the latter suffers from infrared issues. We show that the basic index receives contributions from lowest Landau level states in an effective magnetic field and that, due to the noncompactness of the target space, it is typically divergent. Fortunately, the models of interest possess an additional target space isometry which allows for the definition of a well-behaved refined index. We compute this index using localization of the functional integral and find that the result agrees with a naive application of the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula outside of it's starting assumptions. In the simplest examples, this formula can also be directly verified by explicitly computing the short multiplet spectrum.

Abstract:We investigate the superconformal index of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories that arise on coincident M5 branes wrapping a holomorphic curve in a local Calabi-Yau three-fold. The structure of the index is very similar to that which appears in the special case preserving N=2 supersymmetry. We first compute the index for the fixed points that admit a known four-dimensional ultraviolet description and prove infrared equivalence at the level of the index for all such constructions. These results suggest a formulation of the index as a two-dimensional topological quantum field theory that generalizes the one that computes the N=2 index. The TQFT structure leads to an expression for the index of all class S fixed points in terms of the index of the N=2 theories. Calculations of spectral data using the index suggests a connection between these families of fixed points and the mathematics of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the wrapped curve.

Abstract:We show that specializations of the 4d $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ superconformal index labeled by an integer N is given by Tr ℳN where ℳ is the Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromy operator for BPS states on the Coulomb branch. We provide evidence that the states enumerated by these limits of the index lead to a family of 2d chiral algebras $ {\mathcal{A}}_N $. This generalizes the recent results for the N = −1 case which corresponds to the Schur limit of the superconformal index. We show that this specialization of the index leads to the same integrand as that of the elliptic genus of compactification of the superconformal theory on S2 × T2 where we turn on $ \frac{1}{2}N $ units of U(1)r flux on S2.
Superconformal Indices of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and Holography

Abstract:We study the superconformal index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories on $S^1\times_{\omega} S^2$ in the Cardy-like limit where the radius of the $S^1$ is much smaller than that of the $S^2$. We show that the first two leading terms in this Cardy-like expansion are dictated by the Bethe Ansatz formulation of the topologically twisted index of the same theory. We apply this relation to 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic superconformal field theories describing the low-energy dynamics of $N$ M2-branes and derive closed form expressions, valid to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion, for the two leading terms in the Cardy-like expansion of the superconformal index. We also discuss the implications of our results for the entropy of supersymmetric Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ and the four-derivative corrections to 4d gauged supergravity.

Abstract:We define an index for $\mathfrak{osp}(4^{*}|4)$ superconformal quantum mechanics on a hyperK\"{a}hler cone. The index is defined on an equivariant symplectic resolution of the cone, which acts as a regulator. We present evidence that the index does not depend on the choice of resolution parameters and encodes information about the spectrum of (semi-) short representations of the superconformal algebra of the unresolved space. In particular, there are two types of multiplet which can be counted exactly using the index. These correspond to holomorphic functions on the cone and to the generators of the Borel-Moore homology on the resolved space respectively. We calculate the resulting index by localisation for a large class of examples.

Abstract:We study a limit of the superconformal index of the ABJM theory on $S^1\times S^2$ in which the size of the circle is much smaller than the radius of the two-sphere. We derive closed form expressions for the two leading terms in this Cardy-like limit which are valid to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion. These results are facilitated by a judicious rewriting of the superconformal index which establishes a connection with the Bethe Ansatz Equations that control the topologically twisted index. Using the same technique we extend these results to the superconformal index of another holographic theory: 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM coupled to one adjoint and $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets. We discuss the implications of our results for holography and the physics of charged rotating black holes in AdS$_4$.

Abstract:We develop techniques to calculate an index for four dimensional superconformal field theories. This superconformal index is counting BPS operators which preserve only one supercharge. To calculate the superconformal index we quantize the field theory on S^3 X R and show that the twisted theory has an appropriate mass gap. This allows for the interactions to be switched off continuously without the superconformal index being changed. We test those techniques for theories which go through a non-trivial RG flow and for Seiberg dual theories. This leads to the conjecture of some group/number theoretical identities.

Abstract:The spectrum is one of the basic information of any quantum field theory. In general, it is difficult to obtain the full quantum spectrum of QFT. However, in the case of four dimensional superconformal theories, certain information of the quantum spectrum can be extracted exactly. In such theories one can compute exactly certain observables containing spectral information with the help of localization technique. One such observable is the superconformal index, which is a partition function of the 4d theory on $S^3 × S^1$ , twisted by various chemical potentials. This index counts the states of the 4d theory belonging to short multiplets, up to equivalent relations that set to to zero all sequences of short multiplets that may in principle recombine into long ones. By construction, the index is invariant under continuous deformations of the theory. The superconformal index is studied for the class of N = 2 4d superconformal field theories introduced by Gaiotto. These theories are defined by compactifying the (2, 0) 6d theory on a Riemann surface with punctures. The index of the 4d theory associated to an n-punctured Riemann surface can be interpreted as the n-point correlation function of a 2d topological QFT living on the surface, which can also be identified as a certain deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. With the help of different symmetric polynomials, even explicit formulae are conjectured for all A-type quivers of such class of theories, which in general do not have Lagrangian description. Besides the N = 2 theories, the superconformal index of the $N = 1 Y^{p,q}$ quiver gauge theories is also evaluated using R¨omeslberger’s prescription. For the conifold quiver $Y^{1,0}$ the result agrees exactly at large N with a previous calculation in the dual $AdS_5$ × $T^{1,1}$ supergravity. The superconformal index of a 4d gauge theory is computed by a matrix integral arising from localization of the supersymmetric path integral on $S^3 × S^1$ to the saddle point. As the radius of the circle goes to zero, it is natural to expect that the 4d path integral becomes the partition function of dimensionally reduced gauge theory on S 3 . We show that this is indeed the case and recover the matrix integral of Kapustin, Willett and Yaakov from the matrix integral that computes the superconformal index. Remarkably, the superconformal index of the “parent” 4d theory can be thought of as the q-deformation of the 3d partition function.

Abstract:Superconformal indices of 4d \N=1 SYM theories with SU(N) and SP(2N) gauge groups are investigated for N_f=N and N_f=N+1 flavors, respectively. These indices vanish for generic values of the flavor fugacities. However, for a singular submanifold of fugacities they behave like the Dirac delta functions and describe the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon. Similar picture holds for partition functions of 3d supersymmetric field theories with the chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:New examples of N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories are found as fixed points of SU(2) N=2 supersymmetric QCD. Relations among the scaling dimensions of their relevant chiral operators, global symmetries, and Higgs branches are understood in terms of the general structure of relevant deformations of non-trivial N=2 conformal field theories. The spectrum of scaling dimensions found are all those compatible with relevant deformations of a y^2 = x^3 singular curve.

Abstract:Gaiotto and Witten found that one can construct 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons matter theories by using $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFT whose momentum map of global symmetries satisfy special condition. Usually, one uses free hypermultiplet and twisted hypermultiplet, and more recently it was found that strongly coupled theory such as 3d version of $T_N$ theory and Argyres-Douglas matter can also be used. In this paper, we compute superconformal index of these $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories and derive the Coulomb/Higgs limit. Our results determine the moduli space of vacua, which is used to check various interesting mirror symmetry involving CSM theory and usual $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theory.

Supersymmetry and Localization on Three-Dimensional Orbifolds

Abstract:We consider three-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories defined on general complex-valued backgrounds of Euclidean new minimal supergravity admitting two Killing spinors of opposite $R$-charges. We compute partition functions for theories defined on general circle bundles over spindles $\Sigma$, including $\Sigma\times S^1$ as well as branched and squashed lens spaces, thus obtaining novel observables characterizing three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. We discuss both twisted and anti-twisted theories compactified on $\Sigma\times S^1$ and demonstrate that their partition functions are encoded by a single formula that we refer to as the spindle index, unifying and generalizing superconformal and topologically twisted indices in the limit where orbifold singularities are absent. Furthermore, we test our new index using non-perturbative dualities and obtain one-loop determinants of two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on the spindle.

Abstract:We propose two novel methods for computing the superconformal index of 5d superconformal field theories that cannot be described by conventional Lagrangian descriptions under mass deformations. The first approach involves the use of Higgs branch flows from UV Lagrangian theories, guided by transitions in 5-brane webs in Type IIB string theory. The second method employs the relationship between O$7^+$-plane and O$7^-$-plane with eight D7-branes, which applies to particular non-Lagrangian theories realized by brane configurations involving an O$7^+$-plane. As a concrete application of our method, we compute the superconformal indices for all known rank-1 non-Lagrangian theories, which we also use to identify flavor symmetries and their global forms at the conformal field theory (CFT) fixed points.

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the $4$-dimensional $SU(N)$ $2$-index chiral gauge theories and investigate their faithful global symmetries and dynamics. These are a finite set of theories with fermions in the $2$-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, with no fundamentals, and they do not admit a large-$N$ limit. We employ a combination of perturbative and nonperturbative methods, enabling us to constrain their infrared (IR) phases. Specifically, we leverage the 't Hooft anomalies associated with continuous and discrete groups to eliminate a few scenarios. In some cases, the anomalies rule out the possibility of fermion composites. In other cases, the interplay between the continuous and discrete anomalies leads to multiple higher-order condensates, which inevitably form to match the anomalies. Further, we pinpoint the most probable symmetry-breaking patterns by searching for condensates that match the full set of anomalies resulting in the smallest number of IR degrees of freedom. Higher-loop $\beta$-function analysis suggests that a few theories may flow to a conformal fixed point.
