Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.

Abstract:We demonstrate the controlled spatiotemporal transfer of transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) to electromagnetic waves: the spatiotemporal torquing of light. This is a radically different situation from OAM transfer to longitudinal, spatially defined OAM light by stationary or slowly varying refractive-index structures such as phase plates or air turbulence. We show that net transverse OAM per photon can be spatiotemporally imparted to a light pulse only if (1) a transient phase perturbation is well overlapped with the pulse in spacetime, or (2) the pulse initially has nonzero transverse OAM density, and the perturbation removes energy from it. Physical insight is provided by the mechanical analogy of torquing a wheel or removing mass as it spins. Our OAM theory for spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) pulses [S. W. Hancock et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. 127 , 193901 (2021)] correctly quantifies the light-matter interaction of our experiments and provides a spatiotemporal-torque-based explanation for the first measurement of STOVs [N. Jhajj et al. , Phys. Rev. Abstract:Self-torque has recently been observed as a novel property of light that features time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) along a light pulse. This property offers an additional degree of freedom for manipulating light fields and light-matter interactions on ultrafast time scales. In this work, we theoretically study the self-torque's role in modulating tightly focused fields and reveal spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) in the focused fields using time-dependent vectorial diffraction theory. It is found that time-varying SOIs occur between the spin angular momentum (SAM), intrinsic OAM and extrinsic OAM. Specifically, the spin-to-orbit conversion, orbit-to-local-spin conversion, and optical spin-Hall effect are observed in the focused self-torqued beams. In particular, when the incident beams are circularly polarized, the time-dependent transverse SAM distributions will appear in the focal plane. Moreover, the self-torque of the focused light fields can be controlled via spin-to-orbit conversion. These observations could benefit potential applications in ultrafast light field modulation, microscopy, and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Structured light mechanically interacts with matter via optical forces and torques. The optical torque is traditionally calculated via the flux of total angular momentum (AM) into a volume enclosing an object. In [Phys. Rev. A 92, 043843 (2015)] a powerful method was suggested to calculate optical torque separately from the flux of the spin and the orbital parts of optical AM, providing useful physical insight. However, the method predicted a new type of dipolar torque dependent on the gradient of the helicity density of the optical beam, inconsistent with prior torque calculations. In this work we intend to clarify this discrepancy and clear up the confusion. We re-derive, from first principles and with detailed derivations, both the traditional dipolar total torque using total AM flux, and the spin and orbital torque components based on the corresponding AM contributions, ensuring that their sum agrees with the total torque. We also test our derived analytical expressions against numerical integration, with exact agreement. We find that `helicity gradient' torque terms indeed exist in the spin and orbital components separately, but we present corrected prefactors, such that upon adding them, they cancel out, and the `helicity gradient' term vanishes from the total dipolar torque, reconciling literature results. We also derive the analytical expression of the quadrupolar torque, showing that it is proportional to the spin of the EM field gradient, rather than the local EM field spin, as sometimes wrongly assumed in the literature. We provide examples of counter-intuitive situations where the spin of the EM field gradient behaves very differently to the local EM spin. Naively using the local EM field spin leads to wrong predictions of the torque on large particles with strong contributions of quadrupole and higher-order multipoles, especially in a structured incident field.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.
Universal Relationships Between Optical Force/torque and Orbital Versus Spin Momentum/angular Momentum of Light

Abstract:We establish universal relationships between optical force/torque on a general particle and different parts of linear and angular momentum (AM) of generic monochromatic optical field. It is rigorously proved that the optical force comes about by the transfer of orbital (canonical) optical momentum from light to matter, while the other part of optical momentum, known as spin momentum, does not generate optical force on matter but, instead, stays conserved even when the translational invariance is broken by putting particles into the optical fields. On the other hand, based on a generic multipole theory of optical torque, we demonstrate that the optical torque stems from the transfer of the total optical AM, including both orbital and spin AM, clarifying in generic case the long-standing confusion about whether the orbital AM can induce a spinning torque on a general particle in generic optical fields.

Abstract:Optical forces and torques offer the route towards full degree-of-freedom manipulation of matter. Exploiting structured light has led to the discovery of gradient and curl forces, and nontrivial optomechanical manifestations, such as negative and lateral optical forces. Here, we uncover the existence of two fundamental torque components, which originate from the reactive helicity gradient and momentum curl of light, and which represent the rotational analogues to the gradient and curl forces, respectively. Based on the two components, we introduce and demonstrate the concept of lateral optical torques, which act transversely to the spin of illumination. The orbital angular momentum of vortex beams is shown to couple to the curl torque, promising a path to extreme torque enhancement or achieving negative optical torques. These results highlight the intersection between the areas of structured light, Mie-tronics and rotational optomechanics, even inspiring new paths of manipulation in acoustics and hydrodynamics.

Abstract:We uncover the existence of a universal phenomenon concerning the electromagnetic optical force exerted by light or other electromagnetic waves on a distribution of charges and currents in general, and of particles in particular. This conveys the appearence of underlying reactive quantities that hinder radiation pressure and currently observed time-averaged forces. This constitutes a novel paradigm of the mechanical efficiency of light on matter, and completes the landscape of the electromagnetic force in classical electrodynamics; widening our understanding in the design of both illumination and particles in optical manipulation without the need of increasing the illuminating power, and thus lowering dissipation and heating. We show that this may be accomplished through the minimization of what we establish as the reactive strength of canonical (i.e. orbital) momentum, which plays against the optical force a role analogous to that of the reactive power versus the radiation efficiency of an antenna. This long time overlooked quantity, important for current progress of optical manipulation, and that stems from the complex Maxwell theorem of conservation of complex momentum that we put forward, as well as its alternating flow associated to the imaginary part of the complex Maxwell stress tensor, conform the imaginary Lorentz force that we introduce in this work, and that like the reactive strength of orbital momentum, is antagonic to the well-known time-averaged force; thus making this reactive Lorentz force indirectly observable near wavelengths at which the time-averaged force is lowered.

Abstract:We study optical force and torque on a general particle immersed in generic monochromatic free-space optical field. It is rigorously proved that the optical force can be written as a difference between the surface integrals of the orbital momentum density of light in the presence and in the absence of the particle, while the optical torque is described by the surface integral of total angular momentum (AM) density, viz the sum of the orbital and spin AM densities. It is therefore physically understood that only the orbital part of the optical momentum is responsible for the optical force, whereas the optical torque originates from both the orbital and the spin AM, clarifying in generic case the long-standing controversy about whether the orbital AM can induce a spinning torque.

Abstract:Advances in the generation and the application of spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOV) are proceeding fast, but fundamental aspects of their nature remain obscure. Phys. Rev. A 107, L031501 (2023) (PRA) and Prog. Electromagn. Res. 177, 95 (2023) (PIER) provide contradictory results on the transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by STOVs. We show that the results by Porras in PIER and by Bliokh in PRA refer to different STOVs and are all correct. In PIER, STOVs are elliptical at given cross section and time, or in space-time, but not in three-dimensional space. In PRA, STOVs are elliptical in space but not in space-time. This is evidenced from two dual, equivalent theories on the transverse OAM where a wave packet is seen in space-time evolving with propagation distance or in space evolving in time, that accounts for all values of the total, intrinsic and extrinsic OAM in PIERS and PRA. However, the intrinsic OAM with respect to the photon wave function center in PRA is not generally conserved, which advocates for the energy center in PIER as the STOV center. We argue that STOVs are generated in experiments to purportedly have elliptical symmetry in space-time. The values provided in PIER should then be taken as the reference for elliptical STOVs, and the theory therein to evaluate the transverse OAM of other wave packets. Hancock {\it et al.} in Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 193901 (2021) and Phys. Rev. X. 14, 011031 (2024) erroneously attribute the transverse OAM of elliptical STOVs in space to the elliptical STOVs in space-time they consider theoretically and can generate in their experiments.

Transverse orbital angular momentum imparted upon focusing spatio-temporally coupled ultrashort pulses

Abstract:A focusing system such as a single lens or a spherical mirror imparts intrinsic transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) to spatiotemporal (ST) coupled fields the ST intensity distribution of which presents ST covariance. This fact may greatly simplify the experimental setups used to date to impart transverse OAM. We evaluate analytically the imparted transverse OAM as a function of the focal length and the covariance. The focused fields with transverse OAM include elliptical ST vortices and rotating pulses without any ST phase singularity such as the "lighthouse" pulse. We provide closed-form, analytical expressions for these fields valid at any propagation distance from the focusing system, which are of interest in applications such the interaction of these fields with matter. In general, focusing of ST coupled fields with intensity covariance generates mixed fields with ST vortices and rotating pulse-fronts, where one or another feature dominates depending on the input field.

Abstract:Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) effect has broad applications in optics and other branches of physics, and traditionally this effect is considered in pure spatial or temporal domain. Here we investigate the spatiotemporal HBT effect, extending this phenomenon from spatial or temporal to spatiotemporal domain. By assuming the Gaussian statistics of partially coherent spatiotemporal pulsed sources, we find the generalized analytical results for spatiotemporal HBT effect in the compact form, with the help of the matrix-optics method, which can consider the HBT effect in spatial and temporal domain simultaneously. Furthermore, for Gaussian Schell-model pulsed beams (GSMPBs) used as a spatiotemporal correlated source, we have obtained the generalized expression to calculate spatiotemporal HBT effect, which is useful for up to three-dimensional cases in any second-order linear dispersive medium. By taking a simple two-dimensional case and using air as an example of a linear dispersive medium, we numerically illustrate the properties of the spatiotemporal HBT effect by adjusting the spatial and temporal parameters of the GSMPB source, and reveal the influence of both the spatial and temporal parameters on the spatiotemporal HBT effect. This work paves the path towards the detailed study of HBT effect for a source containing spatiotemporal information with Gaussian statistics.

Abstract:The additional degree of freedom as introduced by the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has revolutionized the various technological applications. Optical pulses with OAM have applications in the generation of twisted attosecond pulses, ultrafast spectroscopy, telecommunication, high harmonic generation and in many other areas of physics as well. In this paper, we present a numerical investigation of the propagation dynamics of ultrashort Laguerre Gauss (LG) vortices using nonlinear envelope equation (NEE) in a dispersive and nonlinear medium. Asymmetric splitting of ultrashort LG vortices in time at its bright caustic are observed above a certain pulse power. The asymmetric splitting owes its origin to spacetime focussing. We also observe that spatial evolution at pulse center (t=0 in pulse frame) and temporal evolution at bright caustic of the ultrashort LG vortex are quite similar. In the spectral domain, oscillatory structures are formed and above a certain peak power, we observe the generation of new frequency components with more intense lower frequency components.
