Abstract:Halin's well-known grid theorem states that a graph $G$ with a thick end must contain a subdivision of the hexagonal half-grid. We obtain the following strengthening when $G$ is vertex-transitive and locally finite. Either $G$ is quasi-isometric to a tree (and therefore has no thick end), or it contains a subdivision of the full hexagonal grid.

Abstract:Halin showed that any thick end of any graph contains an infinite grid. We extend Halin's theorem to digraphs. More precisely, we show that for any infinite family $\mathcal{R}$ of disjoint equivalent out-rays there is a grid whose vertical rays are contained in $\mathcal{R}$. Furthermore, we obtain similar results for in-rays and necklaces.

Abstract:Halin proved that every graph with an end $\omega$ containing infinitely many pairwise disjoint rays admits a subdivision of the infinite quarter-grid as a subgraph where all rays from that subgraph belong to $\omega$. We will prove a corresponding statement for digraphs, that is, we will prove that every digraph that has an end with infinitely many pairwise disjoint directed rays contains a subdivision of a grid-like digraph all of whose directed rays belong to that end.

Abstract:A Halin graph is a graph obtained by embedding a tree having no nodes of degree two in the plane, and then adding a cycle to join the leaves of the tree in such a way that the resulting graph is planar. According to the four color theorem, Halin graphs are 4-vertex-colorable. On the other hand, they are not 2-vertex-colorable because they have triangles. We show that all Halin graphs are 3-vertex-colorable except even wheels. We also show how to find the perfect elimination ordering of a chordal completion for a given Halin graph. The algorithms are implemented in Python using the graphtheory package. Generators of random Halin graphs (general or cubic) are included. The source code is available from the public GitHub repository.

Abstract:In 2015, Kawarabayashi and Kreutzer proved the directed grid theorem confirming a conjecture by Reed, Johnson, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas from the mid-nineties. The theorem states the existence of a function $f$ such that every digraph of directed tree-width $f(k)$ contains a cylindrical grid of order $k$ as a butterfly minor, but the given function grows non-elementarily with the size of the grid minor.

Abstract:We define half grid diagrams and prove every link is half grid presentable by constructing a canonical half grid pair (which gives rise to a grid diagram of some special type) associated with an element in the oriented Thompson group. We show that this half grid construction is equivalent to Jones' construction of oriented Thompson links. Using this equivalence, we relate the (oriented) Thompson index to several classical topological link invariants, and give both the lower and upper bounds of the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number of a knot in terms of the oriented Thompson index. Moreover, we give a one-to-one correspondence between half grid diagrams and elements in symmetric groups and give a new description of link group using two elements in a symmetric group.

Abstract:We prove Jones' famous conjecture for Halin graphs and a somewhat more general class of graphs too. A based planar graph is a planar one that has a face adjacent to every other face. We confirm Jones' conjecture for based planar graphs. Namely, if a based planar graph does not contain $k+1$ vertex-disjoint cycles, then it suffices to delete $2k$ vertices to make it acyclic.

Abstract:We study Helly graphs of finite combinatorial dimension, i.e. whose injective hull is finite-dimensional. We describe very simple fine simplicial subdivisions of the injective hull of a Helly graph, following work of Lang. We also give a very explicit simplicial model of the injective hull of a Helly graphs, in terms of cliques which are intersections of balls. We use these subdivisions to prove that any automorphism of a Helly graph with finite combinatorial dimension is either elliptic or hyperbolic. Moreover, every such hyperbolic automorphism has an axis in an appropriate Helly subdivision, and its translation length is rational with uniformly bounded denominator.

Abstract:The celebrated Erdős-Pósa Theorem, in one formulation, asserts that for every $c\geq 1$, graphs with no subgraph (or equivalently, minor) isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles have bounded treewidth. What can we say about the treewidth of graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles? Let us call these graphs $c$-perforated. While $1$-perforated graphs have treewidth one, complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth. But there are sparse examples, too: Bonamy, Bonnet, Déprés, Esperet, Geniet, Hilaire, Thomassé and Wesolek constructed $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_3$ or $K_{3,3}$; we call these graphs occultations. Indeed, it turns out that a mild (and inevitable) adjustment of occultations provides examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and arbitrarily large girth, which we refer to as full occultations. Our main result shows that the converse also holds: for every $c\geq 1$, a $c$-perforated graph has large treewidth if and only if it contains, as an induced subgraph, either a large complete graph, or a large complete bipartite graph, or a large full occultation. This distinguishes $c$-perforated graphs, among graph classes purely defined by forbidden induced subgraphs, as the first to admit a grid-type theorem incorporating obstructions other than subdivided walls and their line graphs. More generally, for all $c,o\geq 1$, we establish a full characterization of induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth in graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles, each of length at least $o+2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study how to draw Halin-graphs, i.e., planar graphs that consist of a tree $T$ and a cycle among the leaves of that tree. Based on tree-drawing algorithms and the pathwidth $ pw(T) $, a well-known graph parameter, we find poly-line drawings of height at most $6pw(T)+3\in O(\log n)$. We also give an algorithm for straight-line drawings, and achieve height at most $12pw(T)+1$ for Halin-graphs, and smaller if the Halin-graph is cubic. We show that the height achieved by our algorithms is optimal in the worst case (i.e. for some Halin-graphs).

Abstract:We prove that for every planar graph $X$ of treedepth $h$, there exists a positive integer $c$ such that for every $X$-minor-free graph $G$, there exists a graph $H$ of treewidth at most $f(h)$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes K_c$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Grid-Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (JCTB 1986), and treedepth is the optimal parameter in such a result. As an example application, we use this result to improve the upper bound for weak coloring numbers of graphs excluding a fixed graph as a minor.

A boundary for hyperbolic digraphs and semigroups

Abstract:Based on a notion by Gray and Kambites of hyperbolicity in the setting of semimetric spaces like digraphs or semigroups, we will construct (under a small additional geometric assumption) a boundary based on quasi-geodesic rays and anti-rays that is preserved by quasi-isometries and, in the case of locally finite digraphs and right cancellative semigroups, refines their ends. Among other results, we show that it is possible to equip the space, if it is finitely based, together with its boundary with a pseudo-semimetric.

Abstract:In this paper, we research the grid homology for spatial graphs with cut edges. We show that the grid homology for spatial graph $f$ is trivial if $f$ has sinks, sources, or cut edges. As an application, we give purely combinatorial proofs of some formulas including a Künneth formula for the knot Floer homology of connected sums in the framework of the grid homology.

Abstract:We prove that Hamiltonicity in maximum-degree-3 grid graphs (directed or undirected) is ASP-complete, i.e., it has a parsimonious reduction from every NP search problem (including a polynomial-time bijection between solutions). As a consequence, given k Hamiltonian cycles, it is NP-complete to find another; and counting Hamiltonian cycles is #P-complete. If we require the grid graph's vertices to form a full $m \times n$ rectangle, then we show that Hamiltonicity remains ASP-complete if the edges are directed or if we allow removing some edges (whereas including all undirected edges is known to be easy). These results enable us to develop a stronger "T-metacell" framework for proving ASP-completeness of rectangular puzzles, which requires building just a single gadget representing a degree-3 grid-graph vertex. We apply this general theory to prove ASP-completeness of 38 pencil-and-paper puzzles where the goal is to draw a loop subject to given constraints: Slalom, Onsen-meguri, Mejilink, Detour, Tapa-Like Loop, Kouchoku, Icelom; Masyu, Yajilin, Nagareru, Castle Wall, Moon or Sun, Country Road, Geradeweg, Maxi Loop, Mid-loop, Balance Loop, Simple Loop, Haisu, Reflect Link, Linesweeper; Vertex/Touch Slitherlink, Dotchi-Loop, Ovotovata, Building Walk, Rail Pool, Disorderly Loop, Ant Mill, Koburin, Mukkonn Enn, Rassi Silai, (Crossing) Ichimaga, Tapa, Canal View, Aqre, and Paintarea. The last 14 of these puzzles were not even known to be NP-hard. Along the way, we prove ASP-completeness of some simple forms of Tree-Residue Vertex-Breaking (TRVB), including planar multigraphs with degree-6 breakable vertices, or with degree-4 breakable and degree-1 unbreakable vertices.

Splittings of One-Ended Groups with One-Ended Halfspaces

Abstract:We introduce the notion of halfspaces associated to a group splitting, and investigate the relationship between the coarse geometry of the halfspaces and the coarse geometry of the group. Roughly speaking, the halfspaces of a group splitting are subgraphs of the Cayley graph obtained by pulling back the halfspaces of the Bass--Serre tree. Our first theorem shows that (under mild conditions) any splitting of a one-ended group can be upgraded to a splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. Our second theorem demonstrates that a one-ended group usually has a JSJ splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. And our third theorem states that if a one-ended finitely presented group $G$ admits a splitting such that some edge stabilizer has more than one end, but the halfspaces associated to the edge stabilizer are one-ended, then $H^2(G,\mathbb ZG)\ne \{0\}$; in particular $G$ is not simply connected at infinity and $G$ is not an $n$-dimensional duality group for $n\geq3$.

Abstract:An inclusion-free edge-coloring of a graph G with δ(G)≥2 is a proper edge-coloring such that the set of colors incident with any vertex is not contained in the set of colors incident to any of its neighbors. The minimum number of colors needed in an inclusion-free edge-coloring of G is called the inclusion - free chromaticindex , denoted by χ⊂′(G) . In this paper, we show that for a Halin graph G with maximum degree Δ≥4 , if G is isomorphic to a wheel WΔ+1 where Δ is odd, then χ⊂′(G)=Δ+2 , otherwise χ⊂′(G)=Δ+1 . We also show a special cubic Halin graph with χ⊂′(G)=5 .

Abstract:Given a residually connected incidence geometry $\Gamma$ that satisfies two conditions, denoted $(B_1)$ and $(B_2)$, we construct a new geometry $H(\Gamma)$ with properties similar to those of $\Gamma$. This new geometry $H(\Gamma)$ is inspired by a construction of Percsy, Percsy and Leemans [1]. We show how $H(\Gamma)$ relates to the classical halving operation on polytopes, allowing us to generalize the halving operation to a broader class of geometries, that we call non-degenerate leaf hypertopes. Finally, we apply this generalization to cubic toroids in order to generate new examples of regular hypertopes.

Abstract:The planar slope number of a planar graph G is the minimum number of edge slopes in a planar straight-line drawing of G . It is known that for every planar graph G of maximum degree . This upper bound has been improved to if G has treewidth three, and to if G has treewidth two. In this paper we prove when G is a Halin graph, and thus has treewidth three. Furthermore, we present the first polynomial upper bound on the planar slope number for a family of graphs having treewidth four. Namely we show that slopes suffice for nested pseudotrees.

Abstract:Let $G$ denote the infinite grid graph with vertex set $\{(a,b)\ : \, a,b \in \mathbb{Z}\}$ and edge set $\big \{ \{u,v\} : |u-v|=1 \;\text{or}\; |u-v| = \sqrt{2} \big \}.$ A question in landscape ecology, restated in graph theoretic terms, asks the following. What is the maximum number of edges in an induced subgraph of $G$ of order $n$? It was conjectured by Taliceo and Fleron that the maximum is $4n - \big \lceil \sqrt{28n-12} \, \big \rceil$. We prove the conjecture by formulating and solving a discrete version of the classical isoperimeteric problem.
