Abstract:Halin showed that any thick end of any graph contains an infinite grid. We extend Halin's theorem to digraphs. More precisely, we show that for any infinite family $\mathcal{R}$ of disjoint equivalent out-rays there is a grid whose vertical rays are contained in $\mathcal{R}$. Furthermore, we obtain similar results for in-rays and necklaces.

Abstract:Halin proved that every graph with an end $\omega$ containing infinitely many pairwise disjoint rays admits a subdivision of the infinite quarter-grid as a subgraph where all rays from that subgraph belong to $\omega$. We will prove a corresponding statement for digraphs, that is, we will prove that every digraph that has an end with infinitely many pairwise disjoint directed rays contains a subdivision of a grid-like digraph all of whose directed rays belong to that end.

Abstract:Halin's well-known grid theorem states that a graph $G$ with a thick end must contain a subdivision of the hexagonal half-grid. We obtain the following strengthening when $G$ is vertex-transitive and locally finite. Either $G$ is quasi-isometric to a tree (and therefore has no thick end), or it contains a subdivision of the full hexagonal grid.

Abstract:In 2015, Kawarabayashi and Kreutzer proved the directed grid theorem confirming a conjecture by Reed, Johnson, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas from the mid-nineties. The theorem states the existence of a function $f$ such that every digraph of directed tree-width $f(k)$ contains a cylindrical grid of order $k$ as a butterfly minor, but the given function grows non-elementarily with the size of the grid minor.

Abstract:A Halin graph is a graph obtained by embedding a tree having no nodes of degree two in the plane, and then adding a cycle to join the leaves of the tree in such a way that the resulting graph is planar. According to the four color theorem, Halin graphs are 4-vertex-colorable. On the other hand, they are not 2-vertex-colorable because they have triangles. We show that all Halin graphs are 3-vertex-colorable except even wheels. We also show how to find the perfect elimination ordering of a chordal completion for a given Halin graph. The algorithms are implemented in Python using the graphtheory package. Generators of random Halin graphs (general or cubic) are included. The source code is available from the public GitHub repository.

A boundary for hyperbolic digraphs and semigroups

Abstract:Based on a notion by Gray and Kambites of hyperbolicity in the setting of semimetric spaces like digraphs or semigroups, we will construct (under a small additional geometric assumption) a boundary based on quasi-geodesic rays and anti-rays that is preserved by quasi-isometries and, in the case of locally finite digraphs and right cancellative semigroups, refines their ends. Among other results, we show that it is possible to equip the space, if it is finitely based, together with its boundary with a pseudo-semimetric.

Abstract:Given any digraph $D$, let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the family of all directed paths in $D$, and let $H$ be a digraph with the arc set $A(H)=\{a_1, \ldots, a_k\}$. The digraph $D$ is called arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked if for any injective mapping $f: V(H)\rightarrow V(D)$ and any integer set $\mathcal{N}=\{n_1, \ldots, n_k\}$ with $n_i\geq4$ for each $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$, there exists a mapping $g: A(H)\rightarrow \mathcal{P}(D)$ such that for every arc $a_i=uv$, $g(a_i)$ is a directed path from $f(u)$ to $f(v)$ of length $n_i$, and different arcs are mapped into internally vertex-disjoint directed paths in $D$, and $\bigcup_{i\in[k]}V(g(a_i))=V(D)$. In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $k$ arcs and $\delta(H)\geq1$, every digraph of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum in- and out-degree at least $n/2+k$ is arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked. Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible. Our main result extends some work of Kühn and Osthus et al. \cite{20081,20082} and Ferrara, Jacobson and Pfender \cite{Jacobson}. Besides, as a corollary of our main theorem, we solve a conjecture of Wang \cite{Wang} for sufficiently large graphs.

Abstract:We prove that every end of a graph contains either uncountably many disjoint rays or a set of disjoint rays that meet all rays of the end and start at any prescribed feasible set of start vertices. This confirms a conjecture of Georgakopoulos.

Drawing Halin-graphs with small height

Abstract:In this paper, we study how to draw Halin-graphs, i.e., planar graphs that consist of a tree $T$ and a cycle among the leaves of that tree. Based on tree-drawing algorithms and the pathwidth $ pw(T) $, a well-known graph parameter, we find poly-line drawings of height at most $6pw(T)+3\in O(\log n)$. We also give an algorithm for straight-line drawings, and achieve height at most $12pw(T)+1$ for Halin-graphs, and smaller if the Halin-graph is cubic. We show that the height achieved by our algorithms is optimal in the worst case (i.e. for some Halin-graphs).

Abstract:We give the condition of isomorphisms between tilting graphs and cluster-tilting graphs of hereditary algebras. As a conclusion, it is proved that a graph is a skeleton graph of Stasheff polytope if and only if it is both the tilting graph of a hereditary algebra and also the cluster-tilting graph of another hereditary algebra. At last, when comparing such uniformity, the geometric realizations of simplicial complexes associated with tilting modules and cluster-tilting objects are discussed respectively.
A star-comb lemma for infinite digraphs

Abstract:The star-comb lemma is a fundamental tool in infinite graph theory, which states that for any infinite set $U$ of vertices in a connected graph $G$ there exists either a subdivided infinite star in $G$ with all leaves in $U$, or an infinite comb in $G$ with all teeth in $U$. In this paper, we elaborate a pendant of the star-comb lemma for directed graphs. More precisely, we prove that for any infinite set $U$ of vertices in a strongly connected directed graph $D$, there exists a strongly connected substructure of $D$ attached to infinitely many vertices of $U$ that is either shaped by a star or shaped by a comb, or is a chain of triangles.

Abstract:In this paper, we research the grid homology for spatial graphs with cut edges. We show that the grid homology for spatial graph $f$ is trivial if $f$ has sinks, sources, or cut edges. As an application, we give purely combinatorial proofs of some formulas including a Künneth formula for the knot Floer homology of connected sums in the framework of the grid homology.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a tree with no degree 2 vertices and $L(T)=\{l_1,\ldots,l_r\}, r \geq 2$ denote the set of leaves in $T$. An Halin graph $G$ is a graph obtained from $T$ such that $V(G)=V(T)$ and $E(G)=E(T) \cup \{\{l_i,l_{i+1}\} ~|~ 1 \leq i \leq r-1\} \cup \{l_1,l_r\}$. In this paper, we investigate combinatorial problems such as, testing whether a given graph is Halin or not, chromatic bounds, an algorithm to color Halin graphs with the minimum number of colors. Further, we present polynomial-time algorithms for testing and coloring problems.

Abstract:We prove that if $ T $ is a semi-special tree that is not special, then there exists a graph $ G $, formed as an inflation of a sparse $ T $-graph, such that for any special tree $ S $, $ G $ is not a subdivision of an inflation of an sparse $ S $-graph. Furthermore $G$ has an end of uncountable degree that has no ray graph. This result provides a consistent negative answer to a problem posed by Stefan Geschke et al. in 2023. Additionally, we introduce and explore a property that generalizes Halin's grid theorem, extending it to ends of degree $ \aleph_1 $, which was originally established for ends of countable degree.

Topological Drawings meet Classical Theorems from Convex Geometry

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.

Abstract:Given a graph or a matroid, a tree of tangles is a tree decomposition that displays the structure of the connectivity: every edge of the decomposition tree induces a separation, that is, a way to divide the graph or matroid into two parts; and for every two highly connected areas (encoded as tangles) that live on different sides of some separation, some separation induced by an edge distinguishes them. Separations induced by a tree of tangles cannot cross. One approach to display even more connectivity structure is to insert even more structure into a tree of tangles, for example the flowers that were introduced by Oxley, Semple and Whittle in 2007 for matroids and generalised to finite connectivity systems by Clark and Whittle in 2013. Most of the separations displayed by a flower are crossing. In order to extend this theory to the infinite case, we generalise the notion of flowers to infinite connectivity systems, and show that there are maximal generalised flowers. Also, we show in the special case of infinite matroids that of the two types of flowers (anemones and daisies) only anemones can be extended to truly infinite objects, and provide for general connectivity systems a characterisation of when infinite daisies exist. Furthermore we describe a more abstract view on the interaction of tangles and separations distinguishing them, which among other things provides additional motivation for why there should be maximal generalised flowers.
Complexity results on the decomposition of a digraph into directed linear forests and out-stars

Abstract:We consider two decomposition problems in directed graphs. We say that a digraph is $k$-bounded for some $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ if each of its connected components contains at most $k$ arcs. For the first problem, a directed linear forest is a collection of vertex-disjoint directed paths and we consider the problem of decomposing a given digraph into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded directed linear forest for some fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. We give a full dichotomy for this problem by showing that it can be solved in polynomial time if $k+\ell \leq 3$ and is NP-complete otherwise. This answers a question of Campbell, Hörsch, and Moore. For the second problem, we say that an out-galaxy is a vertex-disjoint collection of out-stars. Again, we give a full dichotomy of when a given digraph can be edge-decomposed into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded out-galaxy for fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. More precisely, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time if $\min\{k,\ell\}\in \{1,\infty\}$ and is NP-complete otherwise.

A representation theorem for end spaces of infinite graphs

Abstract:End-spaces of infinite graphs naturally generalise the Freudenthal boundary and sit at the interface between graph theory, geometric group theory and topology. Our main result is that every end-space can topologically be represented by a special order tree. Our main proof ingredient is a structure theorem that we introduce, which carves out the order-tree-like structure of any graph in such a way that there is a natural bijection between the ends of the graph and the limit-type down-closed chains of the order-tree.

Automorphisms and subdivisions of Helly graphs

Abstract:We study Helly graphs of finite combinatorial dimension, i.e. whose injective hull is finite-dimensional. We describe very simple fine simplicial subdivisions of the injective hull of a Helly graph, following work of Lang. We also give a very explicit simplicial model of the injective hull of a Helly graphs, in terms of cliques which are intersections of balls. We use these subdivisions to prove that any automorphism of a Helly graph with finite combinatorial dimension is either elliptic or hyperbolic. Moreover, every such hyperbolic automorphism has an axis in an appropriate Helly subdivision, and its translation length is rational with uniformly bounded denominator.

Abstract:The celebrated Erdős-Pósa Theorem, in one formulation, asserts that for every $c\geq 1$, graphs with no subgraph (or equivalently, minor) isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles have bounded treewidth. What can we say about the treewidth of graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles? Let us call these graphs $c$-perforated. While $1$-perforated graphs have treewidth one, complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth. But there are sparse examples, too: Bonamy, Bonnet, Déprés, Esperet, Geniet, Hilaire, Thomassé and Wesolek constructed $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_3$ or $K_{3,3}$; we call these graphs occultations. Indeed, it turns out that a mild (and inevitable) adjustment of occultations provides examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and arbitrarily large girth, which we refer to as full occultations. Our main result shows that the converse also holds: for every $c\geq 1$, a $c$-perforated graph has large treewidth if and only if it contains, as an induced subgraph, either a large complete graph, or a large complete bipartite graph, or a large full occultation. This distinguishes $c$-perforated graphs, among graph classes purely defined by forbidden induced subgraphs, as the first to admit a grid-type theorem incorporating obstructions other than subdivided walls and their line graphs. More generally, for all $c,o\geq 1$, we establish a full characterization of induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth in graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles, each of length at least $o+2$.
