Abstract:In 2015, Kawarabayashi and Kreutzer proved the directed grid theorem confirming a conjecture by Reed, Johnson, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas from the mid-nineties. The theorem states the existence of a function $f$ such that every digraph of directed tree-width $f(k)$ contains a cylindrical grid of order $k$ as a butterfly minor, but the given function grows non-elementarily with the size of the grid minor.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to improve the proof of the Directed Grid Theorem and provide a more concise, modular and easy - to - understand method. Specifically, by introducing the concept of "cycles of well - linked sets", the authors improve the functional relationship between the directed tree - width and the existence of the cylindrical grid from a non - elementary function to an elementary function. This improvement significantly enhances the algorithm efficiency and has a positive impact on research in multiple related fields. #### Main contributions: 1. **Improve the proof of the Directed Grid Theorem**: By introducing "cycles of well - linked sets", the authors reduce the height of the exponential tower depending on the grid size in the original proof from a non - elementary function to a power tower function with a height of 22. \[ f(k)=\text{power tower of height }22 \] 2. **Raise the bound of the Erdős - Pósa property**: For some types of Erdős - Pósa - style problems, especially the Younger conjecture (i.e., the directed Erdős - Pósa property), the authors improve the original non - elementary bound to an elementary bound. 3. **Introduce new concepts and techniques**: To deal with complex situations in directed graphs, the authors introduce "paths of well - linked sets" and "paths of order - linked sets", and develop a framework based on temporal digraphs to capture the connectivity properties of these structures. 4. **Simplify the proof process**: Through a modular approach, the authors make intermediate results more easily applicable to other scenarios, thus simplifying the entire proof process and improving the efficiency of algorithm design. #### Application prospects: - **Algorithm design**: The new connectivity concepts and framework are helpful for designing more efficient algorithms, especially when looking for directed grids. - **Theoretical tools**: These theoretical tools may find more applications in the theory of directed graph structures and other related fields, similar to the path set system framework in undirected graphs. In conclusion, this paper not only improves the proof of the Directed Grid Theorem, but also provides new theoretical tools and technical means for future research.
