Abstract:Here I am proposing a translation and discussion of the De Colore, one of the short scientific treatises written by Robert Grosseteste. In this very short treatise of the mid-1220s, Grosseteste continued the discussion on light and colours he started in the De Iride. He describes two manners of counting colours: one gives an infinity of tones, the other counts seven colours. In both cases, colours are created by the purity or impurity of the transparent medium when light is passing through it. This medieval framework survived until Newton's experiments with prisms.

Motley's description of the execution of Egmont contains the words: “A moment of shuddering silence succeeded the stroke. The whole vast assembly seemed to have felt it in their own hearts.” The source of this statement was found, after some search, in Hooft's Neederlandsche Histoorien , Amsterdam, 1642.

Abstract:In 1962 Charles Hartshorne published a modal logic proof formalizing Anselm of Canterbury's ontological argument for the necessary existence of God. This article presents Kurt Gödel's notes on this proof which have now been discovered in his Nachlass among other theological material, and discusses possible influences on the development of Gödel's own ontological proof. To complete the picture, strong connections between Anselm of Canterbury's and Gödel's conceptions of God and his positive properties are pointed out.

Abstract:We re-evaluate the great Leibniz-Newton calculus debate, exactly three hundred years after it culminated, in 1712. We reflect upon the concept of invention, and to what extent there were indeed two independent inventors of this new mathematical method. We are to a considerable extent agreeing with the mathematics historians Tom Whiteside in the 20th century and Augustus de Morgan in the 19th. By way of introduction we recall two apposite quotations: "After two and a half centuries the Newton-Leibniz disputes continue to inflame the passions. Only the very learned (or the very foolish) dare to enter this great killing ground of the history of ideas" from Stephen Shapin and "When de l'Hopital, in 1696, published at Paris a treatise so systematic, and so much resembling one of modern times, that it might be used even now, he could find nothing English to quote, except a slight treatise of Craig on quadratures, published in 1693" from Augustus de Morgan.

Abstract:During the querelle des infiniment petits, Leibniz wrote several texts to justify using Differential calculus among Parisian savants. However, only three were published. Among these publications, ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz'' had a peculiar destiny. Although we are aware of the manuscript (Gotha FB A 448--449, Bl. 41--42), it is only recently that we have identified a copy of its impression in the British Library catalogue. This copy was printed in 1706 together with writings by other mathematicians united in the defence of the new calculus -- Joseph Saurin, Jacob Hermann and the Bernoulli brothers. Recently published epistolary exchanges indicate that Jean-Paul Bignon, at the time director of the Royal Academy of Sciences, in order to calm down the institution, had prohibited this publication and confiscated the prints.This article examine the epistemological and institutional issues at stake in ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz''.

Abstract:Joseph Beuys’ Bezugnahmen auf die theoretische Physik sind im Wesentlichen mit zwei Namen verknüpft, die er häufig in einem Atemzug nennt: Albert Einstein (1879–1955) sowie der eine Generation ältere Max Planck (1858–1947). Beider Forschungen revolutionierten das physikalische Weltbild zu Beginn des 20. Jh.s. Im Jahr 1900 hatte Planck mit der Einführung des sog. Wirkungsquantums h – für ihn selbst anfangs nicht anderes als ein mathematisches Hilfsmittel – den gravierendsten Einschnitt in das bis dahin gültige physikalische Weltbild angestoßen. Indem h die Vorstellung ermöglichte, dass die Natur nicht kontinuierlich, sondern in Sprüngen vorgeht, konnten Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr und ihre Schüler/innen die Quantenmechanik ausgestalten.

Abstract:One of the most disputed controversy over the priority of scientific discoveries is that of the law of universal gravitation, between Isaac Newton and Robert Hooke. Hooke accused Newton of plagiarism, of taking over his ideas expressed in previous works. In this paper I try to show, on the basis of previous analysis, that both scientists were wrong: Robert Hooke because his theory was basically only ideas that would never have materialized without Isaac Newton's mathematical support; and the latter was wrong by not recognizing Hooke's ideas in drawing up the theory of gravity. Moreover, after Hooke's death and taking over the Royal Society presidency, Newton removed from the institution any trace of the former president Robert Hooke. For this, I detail the accusations and arguments of each of the parts, and how this dispute was perceived by the contemporaries of the two scientists. I finish the paper with the conclusions drawn from the contents.

Abstract:To honor Bernard Goldstein, this article highlights in the “Defense of Theon against George of Trebizond” by Regiomontanus (1436–1476) themes that resonate with leading strands of Goldstein's scholarship. I argue that, in this poorly-known work, Regiomontanus's mastery of Ptolemy's mathematical astronomy, his interest in making astronomy physical, and his homocentric ideals stand in unresolved tension. Each of these themes resonates with Gold-stein's fundamental work on the Almagest, the Planetary Hypotheses, and al-Bitruji's Principles of Astronomy. I flesh out these tensions with an intriguing interpretation of the history of astronomy, in which Regiomontanus contrasts the two-dimensional “eccentric astronomy” attributed to the Almagest and the Arabs with the three-dimensional spheres of the “later” astronomers. Abstract:In 1865 Émile Montégut, literary critic best known for his long association with the Revue des deux mondes , contributed a major article in two parts to the Moniteur universel on the subject of one of its most distinguished collaborators, Théophile Gautier. In composing this article Montégut had been faced with a problem that might never have occurred to a less conscientious and original critic. His material, after long meditation, was well enough defined. Its content centered around the interpretation of Gautier as a dual nature, “âme gauloise” and “âme contemplative,” and revealed much that was most characteristic of its author as a critic: his concentration on contemporary writing, his interest in defining various forms of the Romantic imagination, his concern with dilettantism as both a strength and a weakness, his frankly personal approach to his subject, an approach based on the belief that in literary criticism there can be no “instrument unique” and that each critic should seek out those aspects of an author with which he has some affinity, hoping that the true meaning and unity of the work will emerge for the intelligent reader from a symphony of individual impressions on the part of numerous critics.

Abstract:Isaac Newton, in popular imagination the Ur-scientist, was an outstanding humanist scholar. His researches on, among others, ancient philosophy, are thorough and appear to be connected to and fit within his larger philosophical and theological agenda. It is therefore relevant to take a closer look at Newton's intellectual choices, at how and why precisely he would occupy himself with specific text-sources, and how this interest fits into the larger picture of his scientific and intellectual endeavours. In what follows, we shall follow Newton into his study and look over his shoulder while reading compendia and original source-texts in his personal library at Cambridge, meticulously investigating and comparing fragments and commentaries, and carefully keeping track in private notes of how they support his own developing ideas. Indeed, Newton was convinced that precursors to his own insights and discoveries were present already in Antiquity, even before the Greeks, in ancient Egypt, and he puts a lot of time and effort into making the point, especially, and not incidentially, in the period between the first and the second edition of the Principia. A clear understanding of his reading of the classic sources therefore matters to our understanding of its content and gestation process. In what follows we will confine ourselves to the classical legacy, and investigate Newton's intellectual intercourse with it.

On Galileo's self-portrait Mentioned by Thomas Salusbury

Abstract:An intriguing reference to the existence of a self-portrait by Galileo Galilei is contained in the biography of the scientist by Thomas Salusbury dated ca. 1665, of which only one incomplete and inaccessible copy exists. Galileo grew up in a Renaissance atmosphere, acquiring an artistic touch. He was a musician, a writer and also a painter, as reported by Viviani and documented by his watercolours of the Moon and drawings of solar spots. Recently a new portrait with a remarkable similarity to the portraits of Galileo Galilei by Santi di Tito (1601), Domenico Tintoretto (ca. 1604), and Furini (ca. 1612) has been found and examined using sophisticated face recognition techniques. If the identity could be confirmed, other elements, such as the young age of Galileo or the seam in the canvas revealed by infrared and X-ray analysis, may suggest a possible link with the self-portrait mentioned by Salusbury.

Light is declared to be not Similar or Homogeneal, but consisting of difform rays, some of which are more refrangible than others. Abstract:Newton's basic ideas developed and evolved throughout his career and changed in sometimes surprisingly profound ways. In this paper I propose an outline of the evolution of Newton's conceptual framework by following the development of his ideas throughout the early work preceding the first edition of the Principia, and thus to complete the work that has been done by Whiteside and Ruffner with respect to Newton's mechanics. I shall show that these evolutions - the mechanical and the metaphysical - are closely interrelated. My focus will be on a key text that marks a turning point both from the metaphysical and the methodological point of view: the "De gravitatione et aequipondio fluidorum". Rather than looking upon it as an isolated fact, I establish the connections of this text to other manuscripts from the same period, primarily the manuscript "Elements of Mechanicks" in the Hall & Hall edition, as well as the two variants of the "De Motu", to which it can be said to relate as to a "zero release".

Abstract:Einstein's blackboard is a well-known exhibit at the History of Science Museum at Oxford University. However, it is much less well known that the writing on the board provides a neat summary of a work of historic importance, Einstein's 1931 model of the expanding universe. As a visual representation of one of the earliest models of the universe to be proposed in the wake of Hubble's observations of the nebulae, the blackboard provides an intriguing snapshot of a key moment in modern astronomy and cosmology. In addition, one line on the blackboard that is not in Einstein's 1931 paper casts useful light on some anomalies in the calculations of that paper.
