Abstract:We prove a conjecture of D. Gaiotto on positivity of inner products arising in studying Landau-Ginzburg boundary conditions in the 1-dimensional case, and in special cases in higher dimensions, for 3d free hypermultiplets.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:We verify that if M is a compact minimal submanifold with boundary in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\sum \nolimits _{i=1}^{k}\lambda _i\ge \frac{2n\pi }{e}k^{\frac{n+2}{n}}{{\,\mathrm{vol}\,}}(M)^{-\frac{2}{n}}$$, where $$\lambda _i$$ is the ith Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian on M. This provides an evidence for that the generalized Pólya conjecture is true. We also prove that if M is a complete and non-compact minimal submanifold in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\gamma _n N_\alpha (V)\le \int _M(V-\alpha )_{-}^{n/2}(x)dx$$, where $$N_\alpha (V)$$ is the number of eigenvalues($$\le \alpha $$) of the Schrödinger operator $$-\Delta +V$$ on M and $$\gamma _n$$ is an explicit positive constant depending only on n.

Abstract:We extend the inequality of Tomboulis and Yaffe in SU(2) lattice gauge theory (LGT) to SU(N) LGT and to general classical spin systems, by use of reflection positivity. Basically the inequalities guarantee that a system in a box that is sufficiently insensitive to boundary conditions has a non-zero mass gap. We explicitly illustrate the theorem in some solvable models. Strong coupling expansion is then utilized to discuss some aspects of the theorem. Finally a conjecture for exact expression to the off-axis mass gap of the triangular Ising model is presented. The validity of the conjecture is tested in multiple ways.

On Positivity for the Peterson Variety

Abstract:We aim in this manuscript to describe a specific notion of geometric positivity that manifests in cohomology rings associated to the flag variety $G/B$ and, in some cases, to subvarieties of $G/B$. We offer an exposition on the the well-known geometric basis of the homology of $G/B$ provided by Schubert varieties, whose dual basis in cohomology has nonnegative structure constants. In recent work [22] we showed that the equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties satisfies a positivity phenomenon similar to that for Schubert calculus for $G/B$. Here we explain how this positivity extends to this particular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, and offer some open questions about the ingredients for extending positivity results to other Hessenberg varieties.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:Based on a classical result on partitions of an integer into a finite set of positive integers, we establish a general positivity result on coefficients of certain $q$-series which uniformly refines the positivity of truncated pentagonal number series, truncated Gauss' identities and some special cases of truncated Jacobi triple product identity. As an application, we prove two positivity conjectures due to Merca.

Abstract:We study the nonnegative part \bar{G_{>0}} of the De Concini-Procesi compactification of a reductive algebraic group G, as defined by Lusztig. Using positivity properties of the canonical basis and parametrization of flag varieties, we will give an explicit description of \bar{G_{>0}}. This answers the question of Lusztig in [L4]. We will also prove that \bar{G_{>0}} has a cell decomposition which was conjectured by Lusztig.

Positivity for toric Kac polynomials in higher depth

Abstract:We prove that the polynomials counting locally free, absolutely indecomposable, rank 1 representations of quivers over rings of truncated power series have non-negative coefficients. This is a generalisation to higher depth of positivity for toric Kac polynomials. The proof goes by inductively contracting/deleting arrows of the quiver and is inspired from a previous work of Abdelgadir, Mellit and Rodriguez-Villegas on toric Kac polynomials. We also relate counts of absolutely indecomposable quiver representations in higher depth and counts of jets over fibres of quiver moment maps. This is expressed in a plethystic identity involving generating series of these counts. In rank 1, we prove a cohomological upgrade of this identity, by computing the compactly supported cohomology of jet spaces over preprojective stacks. This is reminiscent of PBW isomorphisms for preprojective cohomological Hall algebras. Finally, our plethystic identity allows us to prove two conjectures by Wyss on the asymptotic behaviour of both counts, when depth goes to infinity.

Abstract:On a complete Riemannian manifold ( M , g ), we consider distributional solutions of the differential inequality with a locally bounded function that may decay to 0 at infinity. Under suitable growth conditions on the norm of u over geodesic balls, we obtain that any such solution must be nonnegative. This is a kind of generalized -preservation property that can be read as a Liouville-type property for nonnegative subsolutiuons of the equation . An application of the analytic results to growth estimates of the extrinsic distance of complete minimal submanifolds is also given.

Abstract:In previous work, we proposed a general framework of positive topological field theories (TFTs) based on Eilenberg's notion of summation completeness for semirings. In the present paper, we apply this framework in constructing explicitly a concrete positive TFT defined on smooth manifolds of any dimension greater than 1. We prove that this positive TFT detects exotic smooth spheres. We show further that polynomial invariants (subject to boundary conditions) can be extracted from the state sum if the dimension of the cobordisms is at least 3.

Abstract:Using the integral representations of the solutions of Schrödinger equation, which are the essential ingredients of the Gel'fand-Levitan and Marchenko integral equations of inverse scattering theory, we obtain a general theorem on the positivity of some integral transforms, and extend the theorem of Bochner on Fourier transforms of functions of positive type to more general transforms. The present study is restricted to the positive half-axis. We then obtain a theorem on the positivity of Fourier cosine transform of the phase-shifts.

Positivity of Peterson Schubert Calculus

Abstract:The Peterson variety is a subvariety of the flag manifold $G/B$ equipped with an action of a one-dimensional torus, and a torus invariant paving by affine cells, called Peterson cells. We prove that the equivariant pull-backs of Schubert classes indexed by arbitrary Coxeter elements are dual (up to an intersection multiplicity) to the fundamental classes of Peterson cell closures. Dividing these classes by the intersection multiplicities yields a $\mathbb Z$-basis for the equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety. We prove several properties of this basis, including a Graham positivity property for its structure constants, and stability with respect to inclusion in a larger Peterson variety. We also find formulae for intersection multiplicities with Peterson classes. This explains geometrically, in arbitrary Lie type, recent positivity statements proved in type A by Goldin and Gorbutt.

Positivity Bounds in Scalar Effective Field Theories at One-loop Level

Abstract:Parameters in an effective field theory can be subject to certain positivity bounds if one requires a UV completion that obeys the fundamental principles of quantum field theory. These bounds are relatively straight forward at the tree level, but would become more obscure when loop effects are important. Using scalar theories as examples, we carefully exam the positivity bounds in a case where the leading contribution to a forward elastic amplitude arises at the one-loop level, and point out certain subtleties in terms of the implications of positivity bounds on the theory parameter space. In particular, the one-loop generated dimension-8 operator coefficients (that would be positive if generated at the tree level), as well as their $\beta$-functions are generally not subject to positivity bounds as they might correspond to interference terms of the cross sections under the optical theorem, which could have either sign. A strict positivity bound can only be implied when all contributions at the same loop order are considered, including the ones from dim-4 and dim-6 operator coefficients, which have important effects at the one-loop level. Our results may have important implications on the robustness of experimental tests of positivity bounds.

Abstract:For Grassmannians, Lusztig's notion of total positivity coincides with positivity of the Plucker coordinates. This coincidence underpins the rich interaction between matroid theory, tropical geometry, and the theory of total positivity. Bloch and Karp furthermore characterized the (type A) partial flag varieties for which the two notions of positivity similarly coincide. We characterize the symplectic (type C) and odd-orthogonal (type B) partial flag varieties for which Lusztig's total positivity coincides with Plucker positivity.

Abstract:Let (W,S) be any Coxeter system and let w↦w⁎ be an involution of W which preserves the set of simple generators S. Lusztig and Vogan have shown that the corresponding set of twisted involutions (i.e., elements w∈W with w−1=w⁎) naturally generates a module of the Hecke algebra of (W,S) with two distinguished bases. The transition matrix between these bases defines a family of polynomials Py,wσ which one can view as a “twisted” analogue of the much-studied family of Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials of (W,S). The polynomials Py,wσ can have negative coefficients, but display several conjectural positivity properties of interest, which parallel positivity properties of the Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials. This paper reports on some calculations which verify four such positivity conjectures in several finite cases of interest, in particular for the non-crystallographic Coxeter systems of types H3 and H4.
