Abstract:The main result of this paper concerns the positivity of the Hodge bundles of abelian varieties over global function fields. As applications, we obtain some partial results on the Tate–Shafarevich group and the Tate conjecture of surfaces over finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Nakano-positivity and dual-Nakano-positivity of certain adjoint vector bundles associated to ample vector bundles. As applications, we get new vanishing theorems about ample vector bundles. For example, we prove that if $E$ is an ample vector bundle over a compact K\"ahler manifold $X$, $S^kE\ts \det E$ is both Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive for any $k\geq 0$. Moreover, $H^{n,q}(X,S^kE\ts \det E)=H^{q,n}(X,S^kE\ts \det E)=0$ for any $q\geq 1$. In particular, if $(E,h)$ is a Griffiths-positive vector bundle, the naturally induced Hermitian vector bundle $(S^kE\ts \det E, S^kh\ts \det h)$ is both Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive for any $k\geq 0$.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n, and let E be an ample vector bundle over X. We show that any Schur class of E, lying in the cohomology group of bidegree (n − 1, n − 1), has a representative which is strictly positive in the sense of smooth forms. This conforms the prediction of Griffiths conjecture on the positive polynomials of Chern classes/forms of an ample vector bundle on the form level, and thus strengthens the celebrated positivity results of Fulton and Lazarsfeld (1983) for certain degrees.

Abstract:We aim in this manuscript to describe a specific notion of geometric positivity that manifests in cohomology rings associated to the flag variety $G/B$ and, in some cases, to subvarieties of $G/B$. We offer an exposition on the the well-known geometric basis of the homology of $G/B$ provided by Schubert varieties, whose dual basis in cohomology has nonnegative structure constants. In recent work [22] we showed that the equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties satisfies a positivity phenomenon similar to that for Schubert calculus for $G/B$. Here we explain how this positivity extends to this particular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, and offer some open questions about the ingredients for extending positivity results to other Hessenberg varieties.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for any reductive group $G$ the moduli space of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles on a curve in characteristic $p$ is a twisted form of the moduli space of semistable flat $G$-connections. This is the semistable version of a previous result of Chen-Zhu, and the $G$-bundle version of a previous result of de Cataldo-Groechenig-Zhang. As a consequence, we show that the Decomposition Theorem for the Hitchin morphism for $G$-Higgs bundles has the same shape as that for the de Rham-Hitchin morphism for flat $G$-connections.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove index theorems for integrable metrized line bundles on projective varieties over complete fields and number fields respectively. As applications, we prove a non-archimedean analogue of the Calabi theorem and a rigidity theorem about the preperiodic points of algebraic dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the structure theorem for smooth projective varieties with nef tangent bundle to projective klt varieties whose tangent sheaf is either positively curved or almost nef. Specifically, we show that such a variety $X$, up to a finite quasi-étale cover, admits a rationally connected fibration $X \to A$ onto an abelian variety $A$. For the proof, we develop the theory of positivity of coherent sheaves on projective varieties. As applications, we establish some relations between the geometric properties and positivity of tangent sheaves.

Positivity of the CM line bundle for families of K-stable klt Fano varieties

Abstract:The Chow-Mumford (CM) line bundle is a functorial line bundle on the base of any family of klt Fano varieties. It is conjectured that it yields a polarization on the moduli space of K-poly-stable klt Fano varieties. Proving ampleness of the CM line bundle boils down to showing semi-positivity/positivity statements about the CM-line bundle for families with K-semi-stable/K-polystable fibers. We prove the necessary semi-positivity statements in the K-semi-stable situation, and the necessary positivity statements in the uniform K-stable situation, including in both cases variants assuming K-stability only for general fibers. Our statements work in the most general singular situation (klt singularities), and the proofs are algebraic, except the computation of the limit of a sequence of real numbers via the central limit theorem of probability theory. We also present an application to the classification of Fano varieties. Additionally, our semi-positivity statements work in general for log-Fano pairs.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a normal projective variety with an action of a semisimple algebraic group $G$ such that $X$ contains a unique closed orbit. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ and let $E$ be a $B$-equivariant vector bundle on $X$. In this article, we prove that $E$ is ample (resp. nef) if and only if its restriction to the finite set of $B$-stable curves on $X$ is ample (resp. nef). Moreover, we calculate the nef cone of the blow-up of a nonsingular simple $G$-projective variety $X$ at a unique $B$-fixed point $x^-$, called the sink of $X$. As an application, when $X$ is nonsingular, we calculate the Seshadri constants of any ample line bundles (not necessarily $G$-equivariant) at $x^-$. Additionally, we compute the Seshadri constants of $B$-equivariant vector bundles at $x^{-}$.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Abstract:We prove the generic exclusion of certain Shimura varieties of unitary and orthogonal types from the Torelli locus. The proof relies on a slope inequality on surface fibration due to G. Xiao, and the main result implies that certain Shimura varieties only meet the Torelli locus in dimension zero.

Abstract:I study Higgs bundles over smooth projective varieties defined on an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. I prove ``Lefschetz principle''-type theorems for semistable Higgs sheaves and curve semistable Higgs bundles. I give an application to variates whose canonical bundle is ample, showing stability of the so-called Simpson System. From all this I obtain another proof of the Guggenheimer-Yau inequality. Where this inequality is saturated, I prove that the discriminant class of the Simpson system vanishes. This follows from the study of the relations between these numerical properties of Higgs bundles and curve semistability.

Abstract:Motivated by our previous work on Hodge-index type theorems, we give a form of mixed Hodge-Riemann bilinear relation by using the notion of m-positivity, whose proof is an adaptation of the works of Timorin (1998) and Dinh and Nguyên (2006). This mixed Hodge-Riemann bilinear relation holds with respect to mixed polarizations in which some satisfy particular positivity condition, but could be degenerate along some directions. In particular, it applies to fibrations of compact Kähler manifolds.
