Abstract:Using the integral representations of the solutions of Schrödinger equation, which are the essential ingredients of the Gel'fand-Levitan and Marchenko integral equations of inverse scattering theory, we obtain a general theorem on the positivity of some integral transforms, and extend the theorem of Bochner on Fourier transforms of functions of positive type to more general transforms. The present study is restricted to the positive half-axis. We then obtain a theorem on the positivity of Fourier cosine transform of the phase-shifts.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the positivity of certain integral transforms, and generalizes Bochner's theorem on the Fourier transform of positive - type functions to more general transforms. Specifically, by using the integral representation of solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which are the basic components of the Gel'fand - Levitan and Marchenko integral equations in inverse scattering theory, the author obtains a general theorem on the positivity of certain integral transforms and generalizes Bochner's theorem from the Fourier transform to a broader type of transforms.
### Main contributions of the paper:
1. **Generalize Bochner's theorem**: Bochner's theorem was originally about the Fourier transform. That is, if \(\alpha(t)\) is a non - decreasing bounded function, then \(F(x)=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{ixt}d\alpha(t)\) defined by the Stieltjes integral is a continuous positive - type function. The paper generalizes this result to more general integral transforms, where the exponential function \(e^{ixt}\) is replaced by the Jost solution \(f(k, r)\) of the Schrödinger equation.
2. **Positivity conditions**: The paper gives the conditions for the integral transform \(\tilde{f}(k)=\int_{0}^{\infty}f(k, r)d\alpha(r)\) to be a positive - type function, where \(f(k, r)\) is the solution of the Schrödinger equation. This includes requirements for the non - decreasing and boundedness of \(\alpha(r)\).
3. **Applications**: The paper also discusses the applications of these results in quantum scattering theory, especially the positivity problem of the Fourier cosine transform of the phase shift \(\delta(k)\). Specifically, the paper proves that the phase shift \(\delta(k)\) can be represented as a positive integral form, thus further verifying its positivity.
### Formula summary:
- **Schrödinger equation**:
\[
\phi''(k, r)+k^{2}\phi(k, r)=V(r)\phi(k, r),\quad r\in[0,\infty),\quad V(r)>0,\quad\phi(k, 0) = 0,\quad\phi'(k, 0)=1
\]
- **Integral representation of Jost solution**:
\[
f(k, r)=e^{ikr}+\int_{r}^{\infty}A(r, t)e^{ikt}dt
\]
- **Integral representation of phase shift**:
\[
\delta(k)=-k\int_{0}^{\infty}\Gamma(t)\cos(kt)dt
\]
- **Positivity condition**:
\[
\tilde{f}(k)=\int_{0}^{\infty}f(k, r)d\alpha(r)
\]
where \(\alpha(r)\) is non - decreasing and bounded.
### Conclusion:
By generalizing Bochner's theorem, the paper provides a new method to study the positivity problem of certain integral transforms and finds specific applications in quantum scattering theory. These results not only enrich mathematical theory but also provide new tools for the analysis of physical problems.
