Abstract:We construct a fully faithful functor from the category of graphs to the category of fields. Using this functor, we resolve a longstanding open problem in computable model theory, by showing that for every nontrivial countable structure S, there exists a countable field F with the same essential computable-model-theoretic properties as S. Along the way, we develop a new "computable category theory," and prove that our functor and its partially-defined inverse (restricted to the categories of countable graphs and countable fields) are computable functors.

Computably totally disconnected locally compact groups

Abstract:We study totally disconnected, locally compact (t.d.l.c.) groups from an algorithmic perspective. We give various approaches to defining computable presentations of t.d.l.c.\ groups, and show their equivalence. In the process, we obtain an algorithmic Stone-type duality between t.d.l.c.~groups and certain countable ordered groupoids given by the compact open cosets. We exploit the flexibility given by these different approaches to show that several natural groups, such as $\Aut(T_d)$ and $\SL_n(\QQ_p)$, have computable presentations. We show that many construction leading from t.d.l.c.\ groups to new t.d.l.c.\ groups have algorithmic versions that stay within the class of computably presented t.d.l.c.\ groups. This leads to further examples, such as $\PGL_n(\QQ_p)$. We study whether objects associated with computably t.d.l.c.\ groups are computable: the modular function, the scale function, and Cayley-Abels graphs in the compactly generated case. We give a criterion when computable presentations of t.d.l.c.~groups are unique up to computable isomorphism, and apply it to $\QQ_p$ as an additive group, and the semidirect product $\ZZ\ltimes \QQ_p$. We give (joint with Willis) an example of a computably t.d.l.c. group with noncomputable scale function.

Abstract:In the recent paper "The Nakayama functor and its completion for Gorenstein algebras", a class of Gorenstein algebras over commutative noetherian rings was introduced, and duality theorems for various categories of representations were established. The manuscript on hand provides more context to the results presented in the aforementioned work, identifies new classes of Gorenstein algebras, and explores their behaviour under standard operations like taking tensor products and tilting.

Abstract:Computably enumerable algebras are the ones whose positive atomic diagrams are computably enumerable. Computable algebras are the ones whose atomic diagrams are computable. In this paper we investigate computably enumerable algebras and provide several algebraic and computable theoretic distinctions of these algebras from the class of computable algebras. We give a characterization of computably enumerable but not computable algebras in terms of congruences and effective conjunctions of [Formula: see text]-sentences. Our characterization, for example, shows that computable conjunctions of negative atomic formulas true in a given c.e. algebra can be preserved in infinitely many of its homomorphic images. We also study questions on how expansions of algebras by finitely many new functions affect computable isomorphism types. In particular, we construct a c.e. algebra with unique computable isomorphism type but which has no finitely generated c.e. expansion.
Stone-Gelfand duality for metrically complete lattice-ordered groups

Abstract:We extend Yosida's 1941 version of Stone-Gelfand duality to metrically complete unital lattice-ordered groups that are no longer required to be real vector spaces. This calls for a generalised notion of compact Hausdorff space whose points carry an arithmetic character to be preserved by continuous maps. The arithmetic character of a point is (the complete isomorphism invariant of) a metrically complete additive subgroup of the real numbers containing $1$, namely, either $\frac{1}{n}\mathbb{Z}$ for an integer $n = 1, 2, \dots$, or the whole of $\mathbb{R}$. The main result needed to establish the extended duality theorem is a substantial generalisation of Urysohn's Lemma to such "arithmetic" compact Hausdorff spaces. The original duality is obtained by considering the full subcategory of spaces whose each point is assigned the entire group of real numbers. In the introduction we indicate motivations from and connections with the theory of dimension groups.

In this paper, we mainly present the duality theorem for the smash product [Formula: see text], and making use of integral theory for Hopf algebroids, we investigate the stability of Gorenstein injective pre-envelopes and Gorenstein projective precovers between the category of [Formula: see text]-modules and the category of [Formula: see text]-modules. Moreover, we establish the relationship between Gorenstein global dimension of [Formula: see text] and that of [Formula: see text], and prove that [Formula: see text] has finite representation type, resp. is selfinjective, resp. is CM-finite [Formula: see text]-Gorenstein, if and only if [Formula: see text] has the same property under suitable conditions. As an application, we investigate the representation dimension of the lower triangular matrix Artin algebra [Formula: see text].

Abstract:We prove that the category of continuous lattices and meet- and directed join-preserving maps is dually equivalent, via the hom functor to $[0,1]$, to the category of complete Archimedean meet-semilattices equipped with a finite meet-preserving action of the monoid of continuous monotone maps of $[0,1]$ fixing $1$. We also prove an analogous duality for completely distributive lattices. Moreover, we prove that these are essentially the only well-behaved "sound classes of joins $\Phi$, dual to a class of meets" for which "$\Phi$-continuous lattice" and "$\Phi$-algebraic lattice" are different notions, thus for which a $2$-valued duality does not suffice.

Abstract:The absolute Galois group Gal$(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ of the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers can be presented as a highly computable object, under the notion of type-2 Turing computation. We formalize such a presentation and use it to address several effectiveness questions about Gal$(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$: the difficulty of computing Skolem functions for this group, the arithmetical complexity of various definable subsets of the group, and the extent to which countable subgroups defined by complexity (such as the group of all computable automorphisms of the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$) may be elementary subgroups of the overall group.

Abstract:The Kirchberg Embedding Problem (KEP) asks if every C*-algebra embeds into an ultrapower of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$. In an effort to provide a negative solution to the KEP and motivated by the recent refutation of the Connes Embedding Problem, we establish two computability-theoretic consequences of a positive solution to KEP. Both of our results follow from the a priori weaker assumption that there exists a locally universal C*-algebra with a computable presentation.

Abstract:We study the question of what is computable by Turing machines equipped with time travel into the past; i.e., with Deutschian closed timelike curves (CTCs) having no bound on their width or length. An alternative viewpoint is that we study the complexity of finding approximate fixed points of computable Markov chains and quantum channels of countably infinite dimension. Our main result is that the complexity of these problems is precisely $\Delta_2$, the class of languages Turing-reducible to the Halting problem. Establishing this as an upper bound for qubit-carrying CTCs requires recently developed results in the theory of quantum Markov maps.

Abstract:A compact set has computable type if any homeomorphic copy of the set which is semicomputable is actually computable. Miller proved that finite-dimensional spheres have computable type, Iljazović and other authors established the property for many other sets, such as manifolds. In this article we propose a theoretical study of the notion of computable type, in order to improve our general understanding of this notion and to provide tools to prove or disprove this property. We first show that the definitions of computable type that were distinguished in the literature, involving metric spaces and Hausdorff spaces respectively, are actually equivalent. We argue that the stronger, relativized version of computable type, is better behaved and prone to topological analysis. We obtain characterizations of strong computable type, related to the descriptive complexity of topological invariants, as well as purely topological criteria. We study two families of topological invariants of low descriptive complexity, expressing the extensibility and the null-homotopy of continuous functions. We apply the theory to revisit previous results and obtain new ones.

Abstract:For a computable measure space with computable σ-finite measure we study computability on the space of measurable functions. First we prove that for a natural multi-representation finite union and intersection and countable union are computable. We introduce a natural multi-representation of the measurable functions to a computable topological space and prove that composition with continuous functions is computable. Canonically, for a computable metric space the associated computable topological space has a basis of balls B(a,s) with center from the dense set and rational radius. From a given sequence (μk)k of finite Borel measures we can compute a dense sequence (rj)j of radii such that μk(S)=0 for all k and all spheres S=S(a,rj) with a from the dense set and j∈N. For measurable functions to computable compact computable metric spaces the natural multi-representation is equivalent to a multi-representation via fast uniformly converging sequences of simple functions. For non-negative measurable numerical functions the sequences can be chosen to be non-decreasing. Some results on integration are added.

Abstract:Following the idea of duality quantum computation, a generalized duality quantum computer (GDQC) acting on vector-states is defined as a tuple consisting of a generalized quantum wave divider (GQWD) and a finite number of unitary operators as well as a generalized quantum wave combiner (GQWC). It is proved that the GQWD and GQWC of a GDQC are an isometry and a co-isometry, respectively, and mutually dual. It is also proved that every GDQC gives a contraction, called a generalized duality quantum gate (GDQG). A classification of GDQCs is given and the properties of GDQGs are discussed. Some applications are obtained, including two orthogonal duality quantum computer algorithms for unsorted database search and an understanding of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Abstract:A bstract A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group G (denoted |G| ) is divisible by the dimension d R of any irreducible complex representation of G . We show that the integer ratios $$ {\left|G\right|}^2/{d}_R^2 $$ G 2 / d R 2 are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ( G -CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ( G -TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in G -TQFT2/ G -CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the G -TQFT2/ G -CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed G -CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between G -TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number K of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the G -TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

Subgroups of the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor space and a duality between a class of inverse monoids and a class of Hausdorff étale groupoids

Abstract:Under non-commutative Stone duality, there is a correspondence between second countable Hausdorff étale groupoids which have a Cantor space of identities and what we call Tarski inverse monoids: that is, countable Boolean inverse $\wedge$-monoids with semilattices of idempotents which are countable and atomless. Tarski inverse monoids are therefore the algebraic counterparts of the étale groupoids studied by Matui and provide a natural setting for many of his calculations. Under this duality, we prove that natural properties of the étale groupoid correspond to natural algebraic properties of the Tarski inverse monoid: effective groupoids correspond to fundamental Tarski inverse monoids and minimal groupoids correspond to $0$-simplifying Tarski inverse monoids. Particularly interesting are the principal groupoids which correspond to Tarski inverse monoids where every element is a finite join of infinitesimals and idempotents. Here an infinitesimal is simply a non-zero element with square zero. Such inverse monoids are natural infinite generalizations of finite symmetric inverse monoids. The groups of units of fundamental Tarski inverse monoids generalize the finite symmetric groups and include amongst their number the Thompson groups $G_{n,1}$ as well as the groups of units of what we term AF inverse monoids, Krieger's ample groups being examples. We characterize such groups as subgroups of particular kinds of the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor space.
