Abstract:Duality quantum computer can accommodate both unitary and non-unitary operations. In this paper, we derive the mathematical theory of duality quantum computer in terms of density matrix using the duality mode of quantum computers. We give a solution to the `zero-wave-function' paradox of duality quantum computer raised by Zou et al. (Quantum Inf Process 8:37---50 2009) where in duality quantum computer the final wave function may be zero, which contradicts the general understanding of an normalized wave function for a quantum system. We show that it is natural for zero wave function to occur in duality quantum computer because we only consider a part of the wave function in duality quantum computer. In addition, the conditions for zero wave function are presented in both pure state formalism and mixed state formalism.

Abstract:Following the idea of duality quantum computation, a generalized duality quantum computer (GDQC) acting on vector-states is defined as a tuple consisting of a generalized quantum wave divider (GQWD) and a finite number of unitary operators as well as a generalized quantum wave combiner (GQWC). It is proved that the GQWD and GQWC of a GDQC are an isometry and a co-isometry, respectively, and mutually dual. It is also proved that every GDQC gives a contraction, called a generalized duality quantum gate (GDQG). A classification of GDQCs is given and the properties of GDQGs are discussed. Some applications are obtained, including two orthogonal duality quantum computer algorithms for unsorted database search and an understanding of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Abstract:Here we review the general quantum interference principle and the duality quantum computer which was proposed recently.The general quantum interference principle is the concretization of Dirac's statement about single photon interference and the generalization into multi-photon quantum systems.It applies not only to compact quantum system such as an atom,but also to loose quantum system such as a few independent photons.Using the general quantum interference principle,many debated issues can be explained,for instance the interference in a quantum system of two independent photons.From the view point of general quantum interference principle,two photon or multi-photon interferences,are just the interference of the two photon system with the two photon system itself,the interference of multi-photon system with itself.The general quantum interference principle can be expressed in terms of a general Feynman path-integral of a multi-constituents system and be calculated quantitatively.Based on this principle,we proposed a new type of computer,the duality computer or duality quantum computer.In principle,the duality computer is superior to classical computer and the quantum computer in the sense that it can do more than them.In a duality computer,the wave function of the computer is split into many parts,and each part is processed independently through a series of quantum gates,and then the different parts are recombined to get the final results.In addition to quantum parallelism,there is also duality parallelism in which different gate operations can be performed on different parts of the wave function simultaneously in a duality computer.The mathematical theory of duality computer has been established,and this has paved the way for further research.Studies have shown that a n bits duality computer with d-slits can be simulated by a quantum computer with n+log2d qubits.This relationship makes duality computing in an ordinary quantum computer possible,and also spares the seemingly insurmountable obstacle of building a moving quantum computer which a duality computer at all is.The duality computing in an ordinary quantum computer is called duality computing mode of a quantum computer.This relationship also helps us in understanding the general quantum interference principle.Because the underlying physics of an ordinary quantum computer is just quantum mechanics,the general quantum interference principle is also compatible with the usual quantum mechanics.However this principle exhibits itself only in a multipartite quantum system,thus it is difficult to understand it in simple single particle quantum systems.Duality computer is a new type of computer,and there are many unresolved issues and opportunity as well.In a duality computer,the gate operations need not be unitary and could be any operation that we may think of.The type of gates allowed in duality computing is called duality gate or generalized quantum gate.Generalized quantum gates have attracted the attention of mathematicians and some mathematical results have been obtained on the properties of the generalized quantum gates.Besides the mathematical properties of duality computing,duality computing may offer a bridge between quantum computing and classical computing so that classical algorithms may be transformed into quantum algorithms.Because the nonunitarity of generalized quantum gates,it may play important role in the study of open quantum systems.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a general principle of quantum interference for quantum system, and based on this we propose a new type of computing machine, the duality computer, that may outperform in principle both classical computer and the quantum computer. According to the general principle of quantum interference, the very essence of quantum interference is the interference of the sub-waves of the quantum system itself. A quantum system considered here can be any quantum system: a single microscopic particle, a composite quantum system such as an atom or a molecule, or a loose collection of a few quantum objects such as two independent photons. In the duality computer, the wave of the duality computer is split into several sub-waves and they pass through different routes, where different computing gate operations are performed. These sub-waves are then re-combined to interfere to give the computational results. The quantum computer, however, has only used the particle nature of quantum object. In a duality computer, it may be possible to find a marked item from an unsorted database using only a single query, and all NP-complete problems may have polynomial algorithms. Two proof-of-the-principle designs of the duality computer are presented: the giant molecule scheme and the nonlinear quantum optics scheme. We also propose thought experiment to check the related fundamental issues, the measurement efficiency of a partial wave, function.

Abstract:Duality quantum computing is a new mode of a quantum computer to simulate a moving quantum computer passing through a multi-slit. It exploits the particle wave duality property for computing. A quantum computer with n qubits and a qudit simulates a moving quantum computer with n qubits passing through a d-slit. Duality quantum computing can realize an arbitrary sum of unitaries and therefore a general quantum operator, which is called a generalized quantum gate. All linear bounded operators can be realized by the generalized quantum gates, and unitary operators are just the extreme points of the set of generalized quantum gates. Duality quantum computing provides flexibility and a clear physical picture in designing quantum algorithms, and serves as a powerful bridge between quantum and classical algorithms. In this paper, after a brief review of the theory of duality quantum computing, we will concentrate on the applications of duality quantum computing in simulations of Hamiltonian systems. We will show that duality quantum computing can efficiently simulate quantum systems by providing descriptions of the recent efficient quantum simulation algorithm of Childs and Wiebe (Quantum Inf Comput 12(11–12):901–924, 2012) for the fast simulation of quantum systems with a sparse Hamiltonian, and the quantum simulation algorithm by Berry et al. (Phys Rev Lett 114:090502, 2015), which provides exponential improvement in precision for simulating systems with a sparse Hamiltonian.

Abstract:Analogue Hamiltonian simulation is a promising near-term application of quantum computing and has recently been put on a theoretical footing. In Hamiltonian simulation, a physical Hamiltonian is engineered to have identical physics to another - often very different - Hamiltonian. This is qualitatively similar to the notion of duality in physics, whereby two superficially different theories are mathematically equivalent in some precise sense. However, existing characterisations of Hamiltonian simulations are not sufficiently general to extend to all dualities in physics. In particular, they cannot encompass the important cases of strong/weak and high-temperature/low-temperature dualities. In this work, we give three physically motivated axiomatisations of duality, formulated respectively in terms of observables, partition functions and entropies. We prove that these axiomatisations are equivalent, and characterise the mathematical form that any duality satisfying these axioms must take. A building block in one of our results is a strengthening of earlier results on entropy-preserving maps to maps that are entropy-preserving up to an additive constant, which we prove decompose as a direct sum of unitary and anti-unitary components, which may be of independent mathematical interest.

Abstract:Solving systems of linear equations is important both in classical and quantum computing. Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd algorithm (HHL algorithm), a quantum algorithm for solving systems of linear equations, has achieved exponentially improved performance compared with corresponding classical algorithm. We will show in this article that the HHL algorithm is actually a duality quantum algorithm with non-unitary transformation from initial to the final state. We present a detailed realization of the HHL algorithm in a duality quantum computing formalism that allows the construction of non-unitary operations. The divider structure, combinor structure, and the total quantum circuit for the HHL algorithm in the duality quantum computing formalism are given explicitly.

Abstract:We consider 9 Gaussian matrix ensembles characterized by single symmetry among the 38-fold symmetry classification classes of non-Hermitian random matrices, and establish exact duality formulae of certain observables between them. Particularly, averaged products of K characteristic polynomials in an N×N matrix ensemble can be expressed in terms of another K×K matrix ensemble. Our method is to combine matrix-valued heat equations and differential identities for determinants and Pfaffians and has more possible applications.

Some mathematical insights on Density Matrix Embedding Theory

Abstract:This article provides the first mathematical analysis of the Density Matrix Embedding Theory (DMET) method. We prove that, under certain assumptions, (i) the exact ground-state density matrix is a fixed-point of the DMET map for non-interacting systems, (ii) there exists a unique physical solution in the weakly-interacting regime, and (iii) DMET is exact at first order in the coupling parameter. We provide numerical simulations to support our results and comment on the physical meaning of the assumptions under which they hold true. We show that the violation of these assumptions may yield multiple solutions of the DMET equations. We moreover introduce and discuss a specific N-representability problem inherent to DMET.

Abstract:Quantum mechanical systems exhibit particle wave duality property. This duality property has been exploited for information processing. A duality quantum computer is a quantum computer on the move and passing through a multi-slits. It offers quantum wave divider and quantum wave combiner operations in addition to those allowed in an ordinary quantum computer. It has been shown that all linear bounded operators can be realized in a duality quantum computer, and a duality quantum computer with n qubits and d-slits can be realized in an ordinary quantum computer with n qubits and a qudit in the so-called duality quantum computing mode. Abstract:Wei's celebrated Duality Theorem is generalized in several ways, expressed as duality theorems for linear codes over division rings and, more generally, duality theorems for matroids. These results are further generalized, resulting in two Wei-type duality theorems for new combinatorial structures that are introduced and named {\em demi-matroids}. These generalize matroids and are the appropriate combinatorial objects for describing the duality in Wei's Duality Theorem. A new proof of the Duality Theorem is thereby given that explains the theorem in combinatorial terms. Special cases of the general duality theorems are also given, including duality theorems for cycles and bonds in graphs and for transversals.

Abstract:We consider the quantum information manifold whose underlying set M consists of density operators rho with the extra property that some fractional power of rho is of trace class. The topology is defined by defining a neighbourhood of a point rho to be all density operators that dominate rho and are dominated by rho. We show that this is the same set as that of all states whose relative Hamiltonian X in the sense of Araki is bounded, and such that X(t) is holomorphic in the circle |t| less than 1/2. Here, X(t) is the time evolution of X determined by the modular automorphism defined by rho. We show that M is a Banach manifold in Araki's norm, and that both the canonical and the mixture affine connections can be defined. These are dual relative to the Kubo-Mori metric, and so generalise Amari's dual theory to quantum theory in infinite dimensions.

Abstract: M-theory is a mysterious theory that seeks to unite different string theories in one lower dimension. The most studied example is eleven dimensional but other dimensions have been considered. The non-critical M-theories seek to unite different non-critical string theories. From the point of view of computing, non-critical M-theories should be simpler to simulate as they have fewer fields than eleven dimensional M-theory. The simplicity of non-critical M-theory carries over to quantum computing and we show that the quantum simulation requires fewer qubits and Pauli terms than critical M-theory. As an example quantum calculation we study the quantum computation of the ground state energy of Matrix models of non-critical M-theory in 3d in the finite difference and oscillator basis and compare the accuracy, number of qubits and number of Pauli terms of the different basis using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. We study non-critical M- Theory solutions with space-time singularities referred to as a "Matrix Big Bang" on the Quantum Computer using the Evolution of Hamiltonian (EOH) quantum algorithm using the Trotter approximation and compare the accuracy and results the can be obtained using quantum computation. Finally we consider the BRST quantization of the 3d M-theory Matrix model using quantum computation and compute BRST invariant states by studying the BRST Laplacian using the VQE algorithm.

Abstract:Density matrix embedding theory (DMET) formally requires the matching of density matrix blocks obtained from high-level and low-level theories, but this is sometimes not achievable in practical calculations. In such a case, the global band gap of the low-level theory vanishes, and this can require additional numerical considerations. We find that both the violation of the exact matching condition and the vanishing low-level gap are related to the assumption that the high-level density matrix blocks are noninteracting pure-state v-representable (NI-PS-V), which assumes that the low-level density matrix is constructed following the Aufbau principle. To relax the NI-PS-V condition, we develop an augmented Lagrangian method to match the density matrix blocks without referring to the Aufbau principle. Numerical results for the 2D Hubbard and hydrogen model systems indicate that, in some challenging scenarios, the relaxation of the Aufbau principle directly leads to exact matching of the density matrix blocks, which also yields improved accuracy.
A Duality Web in 2+1 Dimensions and Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract:Building on earlier work in the high energy and condensed matter communities, we present a web of dualities in $2+1$ dimensions that generalize the known particle/vortex duality. Some of the dualities relate theories of fermions to theories of bosons. Others relate different theories of fermions. For example, the long distance behavior of the $2+1$-dimensional analog of QED with a single Dirac fermion (a theory known as $U(1)_{1/2}$) is identified with the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point. The gauged version of that fixed point with a Chern-Simons coupling at level one is identified as a free Dirac fermion. The latter theory also has a dual version as a fermion interacting with some gauge fields. Assuming some of these dualities, other dualities can be derived. Our analysis resolves a number of confusing issues in the literature including how time reversal is realized in these theories. It also has many applications in condensed matter physics like the theory of topological insulators (and their gapped boundary states) and the problem of electrons in the lowest Landau level at half filling. (Our techniques also clarify some points in the fractional Hall effect and its description using flux attachment.) In addition to presenting several consistency checks, we also present plausible (but not rigorous) derivations of the dualities and relate them to $3+1$-dimensional $S$-duality.

Abstract:The idea of statistical transmutation plays a crucial role in descriptions of the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, a recently conjectured duality between a critical boson and a massless two-component Dirac fermion extends this notion to gapless systems. This duality sheds light on highly nontrivial problems such as the half-filled Landau level, the superconductor-insulator transition, and surface states of strongly coupled topological insulators. Although this boson-fermion duality has undergone many consistency checks, it has remained unproven. We describe the duality in a nonperturbative fashion using an exact UV mapping of partition functions on a 3D Euclidean lattice.
