Abstract:We construct a fully faithful functor from the category of graphs to the category of fields. Using this functor, we resolve a longstanding open problem in computable model theory, by showing that for every nontrivial countable structure S, there exists a countable field F with the same essential computable-model-theoretic properties as S. Along the way, we develop a new "computable category theory," and prove that our functor and its partially-defined inverse (restricted to the categories of countable graphs and countable fields) are computable functors.

Avoiding Contradictions in the Paradoxes, the Halting Problem, and Diagonalization

Abstract:The fundamental proposal in this article is that logical formulas of the form (f <-> ~f) are not contradictions, and that formulas of the form (t <-> t) are not tautologies. Such formulas, wherever they appear in mathematics, are instead reason to conclude that f and t have a third truth value, different from true and false. These formulas are circular definitions of f and t. We can interpret the implication formula (f <-> ~f) as a rule, a procedure, to find the truth value of f on the left side: we just need to find the truth value of f on the right side. When we use the rules to ask if f and t are true or false, we need to keep asking if they are true or false over and over, forever. Russell's paradox and the liar paradox have the form (f <-> ~f). The truth value provides a straightforward means of avoiding contradictions in these problems. One broad consequence is that the technique of proof by contradiction involving formulas of the form (f <-> ~f) becomes invalid. One such proof by contradiction is one form of proof that the halting problem is uncomputable. The truth value also appears in Cantor's diagonal argument, Berry's paradox, and the Grelling-Nelson paradox.

Abstract:We present the first known solution to the original supertask, the Thomson Lamp Paradox. We also offer preliminary resources for classifying computational complexity of various supertasks. In so doing we consider a newly apparent paradox between the metrical limit and the ordinal limit. We use this distinction between the metrical and ordinal limits to explain the shortcomings both of Thomson's original formulation of the Lamp Paradox and Benacerraf's consequent critique. We resolve this paradox through a careful consideration of transfinite ordinals and locate its ambiguity as inherent to the identity relation under logic with a close reading of Frege's Begriffsschrift. With this close reading in hand we expose how the identity relation is counter-intuitively polyvalent and, with supertasks, how the logico-mathematical field operates on the basis of Deleuzian point-folds. Our results combine resources from philosophy, mathematics, and computer science to ground the field of hypercomputation for logically rigorous study.

Sometime a Paradox, Now Proof: Non-First-Order-izability of Yablo's Paradox

Abstract:Paradoxes are interesting puzzles in philosophy and mathematics, and they could be even more fascinating, when turned into proofs and theorems. For example, Liar's paradox can be translated into a propositional tautology, and Barber's paradox turns into a first-order tautology. Russell's paradox, which collapsed Frege's foundational framework, is now a classical theorem in set theory, implying that no set of all sets can exist. Paradoxes can be used in proofs of some other theorems; Liar's paradox has been used in the classical proof of Tarski's theorem on the undefinability of truth in sufficiently rich languages. This paradox (and also Richard's paradox) appears implicitly in Gödel's proof of his celebrated first incompleteness theorem. In this paper, we study Yablo's paradox from the viewpoint of first and second order logics. We prove that a formalization of Yablo's paradox (which is second-order in nature) is non-first-order-izable in the sense of George Boolos (1984).

Abstract:We provide a simple proof of a computable analogue to the Jayne Rogers Theorem from descriptive set theory. The difficulty of the proof is delegated to a simulation result pertaining to non-deterministic type-2 machines. Thus, we demonstrate that developments in computational models can have applications in fields thought to be far removed from it.

Abstract:The overarching theme of the following pages is that mathematical logic -- centered around the incompleteness theorems -- is first and foremost an investigation of $\textit{computation}$, not arithmetic. Guided by this intuition we will show the following. * First, we'll all but eliminate the need for Gödel numbers. * Next, we'll introduce a novel notational device for representable functions and walk through a condensed demonstration that Peano Arithmetic can represent every computable function. It has achieved Turing completeness. * Continuing, we'll derive the Diagonal Lemma and First Incompleteness Theorem using significantly simplified proofs. * Approaching the Second Incompleteness Theorem, we'll be able to use some self-referential trickery to avoid much of the technical morass surrounding it; arriving at three separate versions. * Extending the analogy between the First Incompleteness Theorem and the Unsolvability of the Halting Problem produces an equivalent of the Nondeterministic Time Hierarchy Theorem from the field of computational complexity. * Lastly, we'll briefly peer into the realm of the uncomputable by connecting our ideas to oracles.

Abstract:Denoting by F2 the free group over a two‐element alphabet, we show in set‐theory without the axiom of choice ZF that the existence of a (2, 2)‐paradoxical decomposition of free F2 ‐sets follows from the conjunction of a weakened consequence of the Hahn‐Banach axiom and a weakened consequence of the axiom of choice for pairs. The existence in ZF of a paradoxical decomposition with 4 pieces of the sphere in the 3‐dimensional euclidean space follows from the same two statements restricted to the set R of real numbers. Our result is linked to the (m,n) ‐paradoxical decompositions of free F2 ‐sets previously obtained by Pawlikowski (m=n=3 , cf. [11]) and then by Sato and Shioya (m=3 and n=2 , cf. [13]) with the sole Hahn‐Banach axiom.

Beware of the Gödel- Wette paradox

Abstract:This paper gives a counterexample to the impossibility, by G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem, of proving a formula expressing the consistency of arithmetic in a fragment of arithmetic on the assumption that the latter is consistent. This counterexample gives rise to a new type of metamathematical paradox, to be called the G\"odel-Wette paradox, which E. Wette claims to have established since some time ago (see [Wette, 1971], [Wette, 1974]). Nevertheless, our work is independent of Wette's since we have failed to understand the details of his work although we recognize the possibility of the correctness of the latter. Furthermore, the G\"odel-Wette paradox is not the only foundational anomaly which the framework of our approach has uncovered but new questions concerning the decision problem, completeness problem, truth definitions and the status of Richard's paradox in arithmetic and set theory (including type theory) have arisen as well. This work will, eventually be unified into a single monograph.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence of the semantic version of Tarski's theorem on the undefinability of truth with a semantic version of the Diagonal Lemma, and also show the equivalence of syntactic Tarski's Undefinability Theorem with a weak syntactic diagonal lemma. We outline two seemingly diagonal-free proofs for these theorems from the literature, and show that syntactic Tarski's theorem can deliver Gödel-Rosser's Incompleteness Theorem.

Abstract:The Ginsburg--Sands theorem from topology states that every infinite topological space has an infinite subspace homeomorphic to exactly one of the following five topologies on $\omega$: indiscrete, discrete, initial segment, final segment, and cofinite. The original proof is nonconstructive, and features an interesting application of Ramsey's theorem for pairs ($\mathsf{RT}^2_2$). We analyze this principle in computability theory and reverse mathematics, using Dorais's formalization of CSC spaces. Among our results are that the Ginsburg-Sands theorem for CSC spaces is equivalent to $\mathsf{ACA}_0$, while for Hausdorff spaces it is provable in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. Furthermore, if we enrich a CSC space by adding the closure operator on points, then the Ginsburg-Sands theorem turns out to be equivalent to the chain/antichain principle ($\mathsf{CAC}$). The most surprising case is that of the Ginsburg-Sands theorem restricted to $T_1$ spaces. Here, we show that the principle lies strictly between $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ and $\mathsf{RT}^2_2$, yielding arguably the first natural theorem from outside logic to occupy this interval. As part of our analysis of the $T_1$ case we introduce a new class of purely combinatorial principles below $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ and not implied by $\mathsf{RT}^2_2$ which form a strict hierarchy generalizing the stable Ramsey's theorem for pairs ($\mathsf{SRT}^2_2$). We show that one of these, the $\Sigma^0_2$ subset principle ($\Sigma^0_2$-$\mathsf{Subset}$), has the property that it, together with the cohesive principle ($\mathsf{COH}$), is equivalent over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$ to the Ginsburg--Sands theorem for $T_1$ CSC spaces.

Abstract:The Turing Machine Halting Problem is a major problem in computer theory, Russell’s Paradox is the root of the Third Mathematical Crisis, and the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is a major discovery in modern logic. The three have had a profound impact on the development of science and have attracted the attention of scientific and philosophical circles. However, since the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem was put forward, the scientific and philosophical significance of its proof has been questioned; in particular, Wittgenstein regards it as a certain logical paradox, and Russell’s Paradox has not yet been settled. This paper makes a detailed analysis of the three based on the view of dialectical infinity. The author notes that the Principle of Comprehension based on the view of actual infinity is the root of Russell’s Paradox. The Turing Machine Halting Problem shows that it is impossible to make an actual-infinite ultimate judgment of the constantly generated infinite world, but the philosophical significance of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is that our understanding of the world is essentially potentially infinite. At the end of the article, the author raises several questions about the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem, finds out the specific paradox form in the proof, points out the high consistency of its proof method and Russell’s Paradox, which strongly supports Wittgenstein’s view. The author points out that the philosophical basis of the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is the idea of actual infinity, the proof of the theorem is based on a logically invalid circular formula, the contradiction of the proof originates from the Gödel formula itself, and cannot be attributed to the incompleteness of the system, so the proof is wrong. Therefore, the conclusion of this paper is that the world is constantly developing and changing, and our human understanding of the world is essentially a potential infinite, that is, the world is Aristotelian, not Platonic.

Abstract:To counter a general belief that all the paradoxes stem from a kind of circularity (or involve some self--reference, or use a diagonal argument) Stephen Yablo designed a paradox in 1993 that seemingly avoided self--reference. We turn Yablo's paradox, the most challenging paradox in the recent years, into a genuine mathematical theorem in Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Indeed, Yablo's paradox comes in several varieties; and he showed in 2004 that there are other versions that are equally paradoxical. Formalizing these versions of Yablo's paradox, we prove some theorems in LTL. This is the first time that Yablo's paradox(es) become new(ly discovered) theorems in mathematics and logic.

Abstract:The syntactic nature of logic and computation separates them from other fields of mathematics. Nevertheless, syntax has been the only way to adequately capture the dynamics of proofs and programs such as cut-elimination, and the finiteness and the atomicity of syntax are preferable for foundational aims as seen in Hilbert's program. Another issue is that a uniform basis for logic and computation has been missing, and this problem hampers a coherent view on them. For instance, formal proofs in proof theory are far from (ordinary) proofs of the validity of a formula in model theory. Our goal is to solve these fundamental problems by rebuilding central concepts in logic and computation such as formal systems, validity (in such a way that it coincides with the existence of proofs), cut-elimination and computability uniformly in terms of finite graphs based on game semantics. Unlike game semantics, however, we do not rely on anything infinite or extrinsic to the graphs. A key idea that enables our finitary, autonomous approach is the shift from graphs in game semantics to dynamic ones. The resulting combinatorics establishes a single, syntax-free, finitary framework that recasts formal systems admitting proofs with cuts, validity, the finest computational steps of cut-elimination and higher-order computability. This subsumes fully complete semantics of intuitionistic linear logic, which solves a problem open for thirty years, and even extends the full completeness to proofs with cuts. As a byproduct, our dynamic graphs give rise to Hopf algebras, which opens up new applications of algebras to logic and computation.

Abstract:We review the close relationship between abstract machines for (call-by-name or call-by-value) lambda-calculi (extended with Felleisen's C) and sequent calculus, reintroducing on the way Curien-Herbelin's syntactic kit expressing the duality of computation. We use this kit to provide a term language for a presentation of LK (with conjunction, disjunction, and negation), and to transcribe cut elimination as (non confluent) rewriting. A key slogan here, which may appear here in print for the first time, is that commutative cut elimination rules are explicit substitution propagation rules. We then describe the focalised proof search discipline (in the classical setting), and narrow down the language and the rewriting rules to a confluent calculus (a variant of the second author's focalising system L). We then define a game of patterns and counterpatterns, leading us to a fully focalised finitary syntax for a synthetic presentation of classical logic, that provides a quotient on (focalised) proofs, abstracting out the order of decomposition of negative connectives.

On the uniqueness of compiling graphs under the parity transformation

Abstract:In this article, we establish a mathematical framework that utilizes concepts from graph theory to define the parity transformation as a mapping that encompasses all possible compiled hypergraphs, and investigate uniqueness properties of this mapping in more detail. By introducing so-called loop labelings, we derive an alternative expression of the preimage of any set of compiled hypergraphs under this encoding procedure when all equivalences classes of graphs are being considered. We then deduce equivalent conditions for the injectivity of the parity transformation on any subset of all equivalences classes of graphs. Moreover, we show concrete examples of optimization problems demonstrating that the parity transformation is not an injective mapping, and also introduce an important class of plaquette layouts and their corresponding set of constraints whose preimage is uniquely determined. In addition, we provide an algorithm which is based on classical algorithms from theoretical computer science and computes a compiled physical layout in this class in polynomial time.

Abstract:Using a homotopy introduced by de Wilde and Lecomte and homological perturbation theory for $A_\infty$-algebras, we give an explicit proof that the universal enveloping algebra $UL$ of a differential graded Lie algebra $L$ is Koszul, via an explicit contracting homotopy from the cobar construction $\Omega CL$ of the Chevalley-Eilenberg chain coalgebra $CL$ of $L$ to $UL$.

Abstract:In this paper, we argue that while the concept of a set-theoretic paradox (or paradoxical set) can be relatively well-defined in a formal setting, the concept of a set-theoretic hypodox (or hypodoxical set) remains unclear--particularly if the self-membership assertion of the co-Russell set, $\{x:x\in x\}$, is classified as hypodoxical, whereas other set-theoretic sentences with no evident connection to paradoxes are not. Furthermore, we demonstrate how a contradiction can be derived in Na\"ıve Set Theory using the unique properties of the co-Russell set, relying on the Fixed Point Theorem of Na\"ıve Set Theory.
