Abstract:We realize every closed flat 3-manifold as a cusp section of a complete, finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold whose symmetry group acts transitively on the set of cusps. Moreover, for every such 3-manifold, a dense subset of its flat metrics can be realized as cusp sections of a cusp-transitive 4-manifold. Finally, we prove that there are a lot of 4-manifolds with pairwise isometric cusps, for any given cusp type.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for determining when a flat manifold can occur as a cusp cross-section within a given commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of simplest type. This reduces the problem of identifying which commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds can contain a specific flat manifold as a cusp cross-section to a question involving rational representations of the flat manifold's holonomy group. As applications, we prove that a flat manifold $M$ with a holonomy group of odd order appears as a cusp cross-section in every commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds if and only if $b_1(M)\geq 3$. We also provide examples of flat manifolds that arise as cusp cross-sections in a unique commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds and exhibit examples of pairs of flat manifolds that can never appear as cusp cross-sections within the same commensurability class.

Abstract:We study a class of homotopies between maps from 4‐manifolds to surfaces which we call cusp merges. These homotopies naturally appear in the uniqueness problems for certain pictorial descriptions of 4‐manifolds derived from maps to the 2‐sphere (for example, broken Lefschetz fibrations, wrinkled fibrations, or Morse 2‐functions). Our main results provide a classification of cusp merge homotopies in terms of suitably framed curves in the source manifold, as well as a fairly explicit description of a parallel transport diffeomorphism associated to a cusp merge homotopy. The latter is the key ingredient in understanding how the aforementioned pictorial descriptions change under homotopies involving cusp merges. We apply our methods to the uniqueness problem of surface diagrams of 4‐manifolds and describe algorithms to obtain surface diagrams for total spaces of (achiral) Lefschetz fibrations and 4‐manifolds of the form M×S1, where M is a 3‐manifold. Along the way we provide extensive background material about maps to surfaces and homotopies thereof and develop a theory of parallel transport that generalizes the use of gradient flows in Morse theory.

Abstract:By gluing some copies of a polytope of Kerckhoff and Storm's, we build the smallest known orientable hyperbolic 4-manifold that is not commensurable with the ideal 24-cell or the ideal rectified simplex. It is cusped and arithemtic, and has twice the minimal volume.

Abstract:We classify topological $4$-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$, under some assumptions on the boundary. We apply this to classify surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds with $S^3$ boundary, where the fundamental group of the surface complement is $\mathbb{Z}$. We then compare these homeomorphism classifications with the smooth setting. For manifolds, we show that every Hermitian form over $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]$ arises as the equivariant intersection form of a pair of exotic smooth 4-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. For surfaces we have a similar result, and in particular we show that every $2$-handlebody with $S^3$ boundary contains a pair of exotic discs.

Abstract:In this survey paper the ultrahyperbolic equation in dimension four is discussed from a geometric, analytic and topological point of view. The geometry centres on the canonical neutral metric on the space of oriented geodesics of 3-dimensional space-forms, the analysis discusses a mean value theorem for solutions of the equation and presents a new solution of the Cauchy problem over a certain family of null hypersurfaces, while the topology relates to generalizations of codimension two foliations of 4-manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that pseudoholomorphic curves intersect complex 2-cycles positively in almost complex 4-manifolds. This makes possible a general and conceptually simple proof that an almost complex 4-manifold with many curves admits a taming symplectic structure, as envisioned by Gromov. Furthermore, we prove that the positivity of intersections between pseudoholomorphic curves is stable, in a geometric sense.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a volume finite non-compact complete hyperbolic $n$-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We show that there exists a polyhedral decomposition of $M$ such that each cell is either an ideal polyhedron or a partially truncated polyhedron with exactly one truncated face. This result parallels Epstein-Penner's ideal decomposition \cite{EP} for cusped hyperbolic manifolds and Kojima's truncated polyhedron decomposition \cite{Kojima} for compact hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We take two different approaches to demonstrate the main result in this paper. We also show that the number of polyhedral decompositions of $M$ is finite.

Abstract:We investigate the realisability of the Casson-Sullivan invariant for homeomorphisms of smooth $4$-manifolds, which is the obstruction to a homeomorphism being stably pseudo-isotopic to a diffeomorphism, valued in the third cohomology of the source manifold with $\mathbb{Z}/2$-coefficients. We prove that for all orientable pairs of homeomorphic, smooth $4$-manifolds this invariant can be realised fully after stabilising with a single $S^2\times S^2$. As an application, we obtain that topologically isotopic surfaces in a smooth, simply-connected $4$-manifold become smoothly isotopic after sufficient external stabilisations. We further demonstrate cases where this invariant can be realised fully without stabilisation for self-homeomorphisms, which includes for manifolds with finite cyclic fundamental group. This method allows us to produce many examples of homeomorphisms which are not stably pseudo-isotopic to any diffeomorphism but are homotopic to the identity. Finally, we reinterpret these results in terms of finding examples of smooth structures on $4$-manifolds which are diffeomorphic but not stably pseudo-isotopic.

Cusped hyperbolic Lagrangians as mirrors to lines in three-space

Abstract:We construct a Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of a 3-torus whose projection to the fiber is a neighborhood of a tropical curve with a single 4-valent vertex. This Lagrangian has an isolated conical singular point, and its smooth locus is diffeomorphic to the minimally-twisted five component chain link complement, a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold. From this singular Lagrangian, we construct an immersed Lagrangian, and determine when it is unobstructed in the wrapped Fukaya category. We show, using quilted Floer theory, that for a generic line in projective 3-space, there is a local system on this immersed Lagrangian such that the resulting object of the wrapped Fukaya category is homologically mirror to an object of the derived category supported on the line.

Abstract:We present a framework to classify PL-types of large censuses of triangulated $4$-manifolds, which we use to classify the PL-types of all triangulated $4$-manifolds with up to $6$ pentachora. This is successful except for triangulations homeomorphic to the $4$-sphere, $\mathbb{C}P^2$, and the rational homology sphere $QS^4(2)$, where we find at most four, three, and two PL-types respectively. We conjecture that they are all standard. In addition, we look at the cases resisting classification and discuss the combinatorial structure of these triangulations -- which we deem interesting in their own rights.

Abstract:The minimal volume of orientable hyperbolic manifolds with a given number of cusps has been found for $0,1,2,4$ cusps, while the minimal volume of 3-cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds remains unknown. By using guts in sutured manifolds and pared manifolds, we are able to show that for an orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps such that every second homology class is libroid, its volume is at least $5.49\ldots = 6 \times $Catalan's constant.

Abstract:Despite spectacular advances in defining invariants for simply connected smooth and symplectic 4-dimensional manifolds and the discovery of effective surgical techniques, we still have been unable to classify simply connected smooth manifolds up to diffeomorphism. In these notes, adapted from six lectures given at the 2006 Park City Mathematics Institute Graduate Summer School on Low Dimensional Topology, we will review what we do and do not know about the existence and uniqueness of smooth and symplectic structures on closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. We will focus on those surgical techniques that have been effective in altering smooth and symplectic structures and the Seiberg-Witten invariants that are used to distinguish them. In the last lecture we will then pose a possible classification scheme and test it on a few examples.

Abstract:We find all hyper-Kähler 4-manifolds admitting conformal Kähler structures with respect to either orientation, and we show that these structures can be expressed as a combination of twistor elementary states (and possibly a self-dual dyon) in locally flat spaces. The complex structures of different flat pieces are not compatible however, reflecting that the global geometry is not a linear superposition. For either orientation the space must be Gibbons-Hawking (thus excluding the Atiyah-Hitchin metric), and, if the orientations are opposite, it must also be toric and have an irreducible Killing tensor. We also show that the only hyper-Kähler 4-metric with a non-constant Killing-Yano tensor is the half-flat Taub-NUT instanton.

Abstract:This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using Mom technology, we prove that any one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume <= 2.848 can be obtained by a Dehn filling on one of 21 cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also show how this result can be used to construct a complete list of all one-cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 2.848 and all closed hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 0.943. In particular, the Weeks manifold is the unique smallest volume closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a classification of all compact Hermitian manifolds with flat Bismut connection. We show that the torsion tensor of such a manifold must be parallel, thus the universal cover of such a manifold is a Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric and a compatible left invariant complex structure. In particular, isosceles Hopf surfaces are the only Bismut flat compact non-Kähler surfaces, while central Calabi-Eckmann threefolds are the only simply-connected compact Bismut flat threefolds.
Cusp shape and fractional Dehn twists of fibred hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Given a fibred hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary, we coarsely relate the Euclidean geometry of its cusps to the classical fractional Dehn twist coefficient of its monodromy. This result fits into the broader programme of coarsely describing the geometry of a hyperbolic 3-manifold via combinatorial data. We are thus able to study the hyperbolic geometry of certain fibred 3-manifolds under Dehn filling. For example, we find coarse volume estimates for sufficiently twisted braid closures in terms of their braid words. We also prove that for any open book decomposition of a fixed manifold (that is not a lens space or solid torus) with fibre of fixed Euler characteristic the fractional Dehn twist coefficient in some boundary component is uniformly bounded. Finally, we obtain applications to contact topology. We give a geometric criterion on the binding of an open book decomposition for the corresponding contact structure in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be tight.
