Abstract:Conjugation spaces are equipped with an involution such that the fixed points have the same mod 2 cohomology (as a graded vector space, a ring, and even an unstable algebra) but with all degrees divided by 2, generalizing the classical examples of complex projective spaces under complex conjugation. Using tools from stable equivariant homotopy theory we provide a characterization of conjugation spaces in terms of purity. This conceptual viewpoint, compared to the more computational original definition, allows us to recover all known structural properties of conjugation spaces.

Non-manifold monodromy spaces of branched coverings between manifolds

Abstract:By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.

Abstract:For most positive integer pairs $(a,b)$, the topological space $#a{\mathbb C \mathbb P}^2#b{\bar{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}}$ is shown to admit infinitely many inequivalent smooth structures which dissolve upon performing a single connected sum with $S^2\times S^2$. This is then used to construct infinitely many non-equivalent smooth free actions of suitable finite groups on the connected sum $#a{\mathbb C \mathbb P}^2#b{\bar{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}}$. We then investigate the behavior of the sign of the Yamabe invariant for the resulting finite covers, and observe that these constructions provide many new counter-examples to the $4$-dimensional Rosenberg Conjecture.

Abstract:We classify topological $4$-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$, under some assumptions on the boundary. We apply this to classify surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds with $S^3$ boundary, where the fundamental group of the surface complement is $\mathbb{Z}$. We then compare these homeomorphism classifications with the smooth setting. For manifolds, we show that every Hermitian form over $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]$ arises as the equivariant intersection form of a pair of exotic smooth 4-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. For surfaces we have a similar result, and in particular we show that every $2$-handlebody with $S^3$ boundary contains a pair of exotic discs.

Constructions of symplectic forms on 4-manifolds

Abstract:Given a symplectic 4-manifold $(X,\omega)$ with rational symplectic form, Auroux constructed branched coverings to $(CP^2,\omega_{FS})$. By modifying a previous construction of Lambert-Cole--Meier--Starkston, we prove that the branch locus in $CP^2$ can be assumed holomorphic in a neighborhood of the spine of the standard trisection of $CP^2$. Consequently, the symplectic 4-manifold $(X,\omega)$ admits a cohomologous symplectic form that is Kähler in a neighborhood of the 2-skeleton of $X$. We define the Picard group of holomorphic line bundles over the holomorphic 2-skeleton. We then investigate Hodge theory and apply harmonic spinors to construct holomorphic sections over the Kähler subset.

Abstract:We call a non-trivial homology sphere a Kirby-Ramanujam sphere if it bounds both a homology plane and a Mazur or Poénaru manifold. In 1980, Kirby found the first example by proving that the boundary of the Ramanujam surface bounds a Mazur manifold and it has remained a single example since then. By tracing their initial step, we provide the first additional examples and we present three infinite families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres. Also, we show that one of our families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres is diffeomorphic to the splice of two certain families of Brieskorn spheres. Since this family of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres bound contractible $4$-manifolds, they lie in the class of the trivial element in the homology cobordism group; however, both splice components are separately linearly independent in that group.

Constraints on embedded spheres and real projective planes in 4-manifolds from Seiberg-Witten theory

Abstract:We calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariants of branched covers of prime degree, where the branch locus consists of embedded spheres. Aside from the formula itself, our calculations give rise to some new constraints on configurations of embedded spheres in 4-manifolds. Using similar methods, we also obtain new constraints on embeddings of real projective planes and spheres with a cusp singularity. Moreover, we show that the existence of certain configurations of surfaces would give rise to 4-manifolds of non-simple type. Our proof makes use of equivariant Seiberg-Witten invariants as well as a gluing formula for the relative Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature boundary.

On homology concordance in contractible manifolds and two bridge links

Abstract:Let $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the group consists of manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ modulo homology concordance, where $Y$ is an integer homology sphere bounding an integer homology ball, and let $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the subgroup consisting of pairs $(S^3,K)$. Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong show that the quotient group ${\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}}/{\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}}$ admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand. In this paper, we improve the result by showing that there exists a family $\{(Y,K_m)\}_{m>1 }$ generating the $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand where $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth contractible $4$-manifold. In fact, we give a $\mathbb{Z}$-count of such families. The examples are constructed using a family of knots obtained by blowing down a component of a two-bridge link. They are studied in Jonathan Hales's thesis. Using the algorithm due to Ozsváth, Szabó and Hales we give a classification of the knot Floer homology of a larger family of such knots, that might be of independent interest.

Smooth structures on non-orientable $4$-manifolds via twisting operations

Abstract:Four observations compose the main results of this note. The first records the existence of a smoothly embedded 2-sphere $S$ inside $\mathbb{R} P^2\times S^2$ such that performing a Gluck twist on $S$ produces a manifold $Y$ that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the total space of the non-trivial 2-sphere bundle over the real projective plane $S(2\gamma \oplus \mathbb{R})$. The second observation is that there is a 5-dimensional cobordism with a single 2-handle between the 4-manifold $Y$ and a mapping torus that was used by Cappell-Shaneson to construct an exotic $\mathbb{R} P^4$. This construction of $Y$ is similar to the one of the Cappell-Shaneson homotopy 4-spheres. The third observation is that twisting an embedded real projective plane inside $Y$ produces a manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the circle sum of two copies of $\mathbb{R}P^4$. Knotting phenomena of 2-spheres in non-orientable 4-manifolds that stands in glaring contrast with known phenomena in the orientable domain is pointed out in the fourth observation.

Abstract:Branched coverings boast a rich history, ranging from the ramification of Riemann surfaces to the realization of 3-manifolds as coverings branched over knots and spanning both geometric topology and algebraic geometry. This work delves into branched coverings "à la Fox" of ( G , X )-manifolds, encompassing three main avenues: Firstly, we introduce a comprehensive class of singular ( G , X )-manifolds, elucidating elementary theory paired with illustrative examples to showcase its efficacy and universality. Secondly, building on Montesinos' work, we revisit and augment the prevailing knowledge, formulating a Galois theory tailored for such branched coverings. This includes a detailed portrayal of the fiber above branching points. Lastly, we identify local attributes that guarantee the existence of developing maps for singular ( G , X )-manifolds within the branched coverings framework. Notably, we pinpoint conditions that ensure the existence of developing maps for these singular manifolds. This research proves especially pertinent for non-metric singular ( G , X )-manifolds like those of Lorentzian or projective nature, as discussed by Barbot, Bonsante, Suhyoung Choi, Danciger, Seppi, Schlenker, and the author, among others. While examples are sprinkled throughout, a standout application presented is a uniformization theorem "à la Mess" for singular locally Minkowski manifolds exhibiting BTZ-like singularities.

Abstract:In this article, we give new means of constructing and distinguishing closed exotic four-manifolds. Using Heegaard Floer homology, we define new closed four-manifold invariants that are distinct from the Seiberg--Witten and Bauer--Furuta invariants and can remain distinct in covers. Our constructions include exotic definite manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z/2$, infinite families of exotic manifolds that are related by knot surgeries on Alexander polynomial 1 knots, and exotic manifolds that contain square-zero spheres.

Abstract:Given a spin rational homology sphere $Y$ equipped with a $\mathbb{Z}/m$-action preserving the spin structure, we use the Seiberg--Witten equations to define equivariant refinements of the invariant $\kappa(Y)$ from \cite{Man14}, which take the form of a finite subset of elements in a lattice constructed from the representation ring of a twisted product of $\text{Pin}(2)$ and $\mathbb{Z}/m$. The main theorems consist of equivariant relative 10/8-ths type inequalities for spin equivariant cobordisms between rational homology spheres. We provide applications to knot concordance, give obstructions to extending cyclic group actions to spin fillings, and via taking branched covers we obtain genus bounds for knots in punctured 4-manifolds. In some cases, these bounds are strong enough to determine the relative genus for a large class of knots within certain homology classes in $\mathbb{C} P^{2}\#\mathbb{C} P^{2}$, $S^{2}\times S^{2}\# S^{2}\times S^{2}$, $\mathbb{C} P^{2}\# S^{2}\times S^{2}$, and homotopy $K3$ surfaces.

Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for 3-manifolds with non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and 2-generated fundamental group. We deduce a variety of Corollaries. Note this is not a complete classification of such manifolds. In particular we believe that one of the families in our list is empty. Abstract:A standard fact about two incompressible surfaces in an irreducible 3-manifold is that one can move one of them by isotopy so that their intersection becomes $\pi_1$-injective. By extending it on the maps of some 3-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_n$-manifolds into 4-manifolds, we prove that any homotopy equivalence of 4-dimensional graph-manifolds with reduced graph-structures is homotopic to a diffeomorphism preserving the structures. Abstract:For a simply-connected closed manifold $X$ of $\dim X \neq 4$, the mapping class group $\pi_0(\mathrm{Diff}(X))$ is known to be finitely generated. We prove that analogous finite generation fails in dimension 4. Namely, we show that there exist simply-connected closed smooth 4-manifolds whose mapping class groups are not finitely generated. More generally, for each $k>0$, we prove that there are simply-connected closed smooth 4-manifolds $X$ for which $H_k(B\mathrm{Diff}(X);\mathbb{Z})$ are not finitely generated. The infinitely generated subgroup of $H_k(B\mathrm{Diff}(X);\mathbb{Z})$ which we detect are topologically trivial, and unstable under the connected sum of $S^2 \times S^2$. The proof uses characteristic classes obtained from Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer m we show that any closed, oriented topological four-manifold with fundamental group Z_{4m+2} and odd intersection form, with possibly seven exceptions, either admits no smooth structure or admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures up to diffeomorphism. Moreover, we construct infinite families of non-complex irreducible fake projective planes with diverse fundamental groups.
