Abstract:In this article, we give new means of constructing and distinguishing closed exotic four-manifolds. Using Heegaard Floer homology, we define new closed four-manifold invariants that are distinct from the Seiberg--Witten and Bauer--Furuta invariants and can remain distinct in covers. Our constructions include exotic definite manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z/2$, infinite families of exotic manifolds that are related by knot surgeries on Alexander polynomial 1 knots, and exotic manifolds that contain square-zero spheres.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on constructing and distinguishing closed exotic 4 - manifolds. Specifically, the authors introduce new methods to construct and identify these exotic 4 - manifolds, which are based on Heegaard Floer homology theory. Different from the previous methods using Seiberg - Witten invariants or Bauer - Furuta invariants, the authors define new 4 - manifold invariants, and these invariants can remain distinct in covering spaces as well. In addition, they also show how to use these new tools to construct exotic 4 - manifolds with specific properties, such as exotic qualitative manifolds with fundamental group \( \mathbb{Z}/2 \), an infinite family of exotic manifolds generated by knot surgeries with Alexander polynomial 1, and exotic manifolds containing null - square spheres.
### Main Objectives:
1. **Construct New Exotic 4 - Manifolds**:
- Explicitly construct smooth 4 - manifolds through 2 - handle constructions.
- Construct exotic 4 - manifolds with specific properties, such as exotic qualitative manifolds with fundamental group \( \mathbb{Z}/2 \).
2. **Define New Invariants**:
- Define new 4 - manifold invariants using Heegaard Floer homology theory.
- These invariants can distinguish different exotic 4 - manifolds and can also remain distinct in covering spaces.
3. **Show New Phenomena**:
- Show that new exotic phenomena can be constructed through simple techniques, such as an exotic \( \mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9\mathbb{CP}^2 \) with a free involution.
- Prove that these new invariants do not vanish in some cases, even on 4 - manifolds containing homologically essential spheres with self - intersection number zero.
### Specific Achievements:
- **Theorem 1.2**: Constructed an exotic \( \mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9\mathbb{CP}^2 \) and proved that it is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard \( \mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9\mathbb{CP}^2 \).
- **Theorem 1.5**: Constructed a series of exotic \( S^1 \times S^3 \# 2p\mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9p\mathbb{CP}^2 \) and proved that they are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard \( S^1 \times S^3 \# 2p\mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9p\mathbb{CP}^2 \).
- **Theorem 1.6**: Constructed infinitely many exotic \( S^1 \times S^3 \# 2p\mathbb{CP}^2 \# 9p\mathbb{CP}^2 \) through Fintushel - Stern knot surgeries and proved that these exotic manifolds are not diffeomorphic to each other.
- **Theorem 1.8**: Constructed more exotic manifolds through the "circle sum" operation and proved that these exotic manifolds contain homologically essential spheres with self - intersection number zero in some cases.
### Methodology:
- **Heegaard Floer Homology**: Used to define and calculate new 4 - manifold invariants.
- **2 - Handle Construction**: Construct 4 - manifolds by explicitly adding 2 - handles.
- **Fintushel - Stern Knot Surgery**: Used to generate new exotic manifolds.
In conclusion, this paper provides new perspectives and tools for the study of exotic 4 - manifolds by introducing new construction methods and invariants.
