Abstract:By gluing some copies of a polytope of Kerckhoff and Storm's, we build the smallest known orientable hyperbolic 4-manifold that is not commensurable with the ideal 24-cell or the ideal rectified simplex. It is cusped and arithemtic, and has twice the minimal volume.

Abstract:The minimal volume of orientable hyperbolic manifolds with a given number of cusps has been found for $0,1,2,4$ cusps, while the minimal volume of 3-cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds remains unknown. By using guts in sutured manifolds and pared manifolds, we are able to show that for an orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps such that every second homology class is libroid, its volume is at least $5.49\ldots = 6 \times $Catalan's constant.

Abstract:This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using Mom technology, we prove that any one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume <= 2.848 can be obtained by a Dehn filling on one of 21 cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also show how this result can be used to construct a complete list of all one-cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 2.848 and all closed hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 0.943. In particular, the Weeks manifold is the unique smallest volume closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:We realize every closed flat 3-manifold as a cusp section of a complete, finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold whose symmetry group acts transitively on the set of cusps. Moreover, for every such 3-manifold, a dense subset of its flat metrics can be realized as cusp sections of a cusp-transitive 4-manifold. Finally, we prove that there are a lot of 4-manifolds with pairwise isometric cusps, for any given cusp type.

Abstract:We describe a family of 4-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds, constructed by deforming an infinite volume orbifold obtained from the ideal, hyperbolic 24-cell by removing two walls. This family provides an infinite number of infinitesimally rigid, infinite covolume, geometrically finite discrete subgroups of the isometry group of hyperbolic 4-space. It also leads to finite covolume Coxeter groups which are the homomorphic image of the group of reflections in the hyperbolic 24-cell. The examples are constructed very explicitly, both from an algebraic and a geometric point of view. The method used can be viewed as a 4-dimensional, but infinite volume, analog of 3-dimensional hyperbolic Dehn filling.

Abstract:Since there is no hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem for higher dimensions, it is challenging to construct explicit hyperbolic manifolds of small volume in dimension at least four. Here, we build up closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds of volume 34 π 2 3 ⋅ 16 \frac {34\pi ^2}{3}\cdot 16 by using the small cover theory. In particular, we classify all of the orientable four-dimensional small covers over the right-angled 120-cell up to homeomorphism; these are all with even intersection forms.

Abstract:The waist size of a cusp in an orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold is the length of the shortest nontrivial curve generated by a parabolic isometry in the maximal cusp boundary. Previously, it was shown that the smallest possible waist size, which is 1, is realized only by the cusp in the figure-eight knot complement. In this paper, it is proved that the next two smallest waist sizes are realized uniquely for the cusps in the $5_2$ knot complement and the manifold obtained by (2,1)-surgery on the Whitehead link. One application is an improvement on the universal upper bound for the length of an unknotting tunnel in a 2-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:Since there is no hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem in higher dimensions, it is difficult to construct concrete hyperbolic manifolds of small volume in dimension at least four. We build up a census of closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds of volume $frac{34pi^2}{3}cdot 16$ by using small cover theory over the right-angled 120-cell. In particular, we classify all the orientable 4-dimensional small covers over the 120-cell and obtain exactly 56 many up to homeomorphism. All of them have even intersection forms.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a volume finite non-compact complete hyperbolic $n$-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We show that there exists a polyhedral decomposition of $M$ such that each cell is either an ideal polyhedron or a partially truncated polyhedron with exactly one truncated face. This result parallels Epstein-Penner's ideal decomposition \cite{EP} for cusped hyperbolic manifolds and Kojima's truncated polyhedron decomposition \cite{Kojima} for compact hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We take two different approaches to demonstrate the main result in this paper. We also show that the number of polyhedral decompositions of $M$ is finite.

Abstract:Ivansic proved that there is a link $L$ of five tori in $S^4$ with hyperbolic complement. We describe $L$ explicitly and study its properties, and discover that $L$ is in many aspects similar to the Borromean rings in $S^3$. In particular the following hold: (1) Any two tori in $L$ are unlinked, but three are not; (2) The complement $M=S^4\setminus L$ is integral arithmetic hyperbolic; (3) The symmetry group of $L$ acts $k$-transitively on its components for all $k$; (4) The double branched covering over $L$ has geometry $\mathbb H^2 \times \mathbb H^2$; (5) The fundamental group of $M$ has a nice presentation via commutators; (6) The Alexander ideal is explicit; (7) Every class $x\in H^1(M, \mathbb Z)=\mathbb Z^5$ with $x_i\neq 0$ is represented by a perfect circle-valued Morse function; (8) By longitudinal Dehn surgery along $L$ we get a closed 4-manifold with fundamental group $\mathbb Z^5$; (9) The link $L$ can be put in perfect position. This leads also to the first descriptions of a cusped hyperbolic 4-manifold as a complement of tori in $\mathbb R \mathbb P^4$ and of some explicit Lagrangian tori in the product of two surfaces of genus two.

Abstract:We exhibit new minimal 2-spheres in hyperkähler 4-manifolds arising from the Gibbons--Hawking ansatz and in the K3 manifold endowed with a hyperkähler metric. These minimal surfaces are obtained via a gluing construction using the Scherk surface in flat space and the holomorphic cigar in the Taub-NUT space as building blocks. As for the stable minimal 2-sphere in the Atiyah--Hitchin manifold, the minimal surfaces we construct are not holomorphic with respect to any complex structure compatible with the metric, have degree-1 positive Gauss lift so they can be parametrised by a harmonic map that satisfies a first-order Fueter-type PDE, and yet are unstable. This shows that there is no characterisation of stable minimal surfaces in hyperkähler 4-manifolds in terms of topological data.

Abstract:We present a framework to classify PL-types of large censuses of triangulated $4$-manifolds, which we use to classify the PL-types of all triangulated $4$-manifolds with up to $6$ pentachora. This is successful except for triangulations homeomorphic to the $4$-sphere, $\mathbb{C}P^2$, and the rational homology sphere $QS^4(2)$, where we find at most four, three, and two PL-types respectively. We conjecture that they are all standard. In addition, we look at the cases resisting classification and discuss the combinatorial structure of these triangulations -- which we deem interesting in their own rights.

Abstract:This paper builds one-cusped complex hyperbolic $2$-manifolds by an explicit geometric construction. Specifically, for each odd $d \ge 1$ there is a smooth projective surface $Z_d$ with $c_1^2(Z_d) = c_2(Z_d) = 6d$ and a smooth irreducible curve $E_d$ on $Z_d$ of genus one so that $Z_d \smallsetminus E_d$ admits a finite volume uniformization by the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^2$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$. This produces one-cusped complex hyperbolic $2$-manifolds of arbitrarily large volume. As a consequence, the $3$-dimensional nilmanifold of Euler number $12d$ bounds geometrically for all odd $d \ge 1$.

Abstract:This survey paper contains an elementary exposition of Casson and Rivin's technique for finding the hyperbolic metric on a 3-manifold M with toroidal boundary. We also survey a number of applications of this technique. The method involves subdividing M into ideal tetrahedra and solving a system of gluing equations to find hyperbolic shapes for the tetrahedra. The gluing equations decompose into a linear and non-linear part. The solutions to the linear equations form a convex polytope A. The solution to the non-linear part (unique if it exists) is a critical point of a certain volume functional on this polytope. The main contribution of this paper is an elementary proof of Rivin's theorem that a critical point of the volume functional on A produces a complete hyperbolic structure on M.

Abstract:In $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$, the group of holomorphic isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane, we study the space of involutions $R_1, R_2, R_3, R_4, R_5$ satisfying $R_5R_4R_3R_2R_1=1$, where $R_1$ is a reflection in a complex geodesic and the other $R_i$'s are reflections in points of the complex hyperbolic plane. We show that this space modulo $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$-conjugation is bending-connected and has dimension $4$. Using this, we construct a $4$-dimensional bending-connected family of complex hyperbolic structures on a disc orbibundle with vanishing Euler number over the sphere with $5$ cone points of angle $\pi$. Bending-connectedness here means that we can naturally deform the geometric structure, like Dehn twists in Teichmüller theory. Additionally, finding complex hyperbolic disc orbibundles with vanishing Euler number is a hard problem, originally conjectured by W. Goldman and Y. Eliashberg and solved by S. Anan'in and N. Gusevskii, and we produce a simpler and more straightforward construction for them.

Practical Software for Triangulating and Simplifying 4-Manifolds

Abstract:Dimension 4 is the first dimension in which exotic smooth manifold pairs appear -- manifolds which are topologically the same but for which there is no smooth deformation of one into the other. Whilst smooth and triangulated 4-manifolds do coincide, comparatively little work has been done towards gaining an understanding of smooth 4-manifolds from the discrete and algorithmic perspective. In this paper we introduce new software tools to make this possible, including a software implementation of an algorithm which enables us to build triangulations of 4-manifolds from Kirby diagrams, as well as a new heuristic for simplifying 4-manifold triangulations. Using these tools, we present new triangulations of several bounded exotic pairs, corks and plugs (objects responsible for "exoticity"), as well as the smallest known triangulation of the fundamental K3 surface. The small size of these triangulations benefit us by revealing fine structural features in 4-manifold triangulations.

Abstract:We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.
