Abstract:First proved my Donald Martin in 1975, the result of Borel determinacy has been the subject of multiple revised proofs. Following Martin's book [1], we present a recent streamlined proof which implements ideas of Martin, Moschovakis, and Hurkens. We aim to give a concise presentation that makes this proof approachable to a wider audience.

Abstract:We present an exposition of the *Chain Bounding Lemma*, which is a common generalization of both Zorn's Lemma and the Bourbaki-Witt fixed point theorem. The proofs of these results through the use of Chain Bounding are amongst the simplest ones that we are aware of. As a by-product, we show that for every poset $P$ and function $f$ from the powerset of $P$ into $P$, there exists a maximal well-ordered chain whose family of initial segments is appropriately closed under $f$. We also provide an introduction to the process of "computer formalization" of mathematical proofs by using *proofs assistants*. As an illustration, we verify our main results with the Lean proof assistant.

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of Borel reducibility, namely the notion of thickness; this associates to every sentence $\Phi$ of $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1 \omega}$ and to every cardinal $\lambda$, the thickness $\tau(\Phi, \lambda)$ of $\Phi$ at $\lambda$. As applications, we show that all the Friedman-Stanley jumps of torsion abelian groups are non-Borel complete. We also show that under the existence of large cardinals, if $\Phi$ is a sentence of $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1 \omega}$ with the Schröder-Bernstein property (that is, whenever two countable models of $\Phi$ are biembeddable, then they are isomorphic), then $\Phi$ is not Borel complete.

Towards solid abelian groups: A formal proof of Nöbeling's theorem

Abstract:Condensed mathematics, developed by Clausen and Scholze over the last few years, is a new way of studying the interplay between algebra and geometry. It replaces the concept of a topological space by a more sophisticated but better-behaved idea, namely that of a condensed set. Central to the theory are solid abelian groups and liquid vector spaces, analogues of complete topological groups. Nöbeling's theorem, a surprising result from the 1960s about the structure of the abelian group of continuous maps from a profinite space to the integers, is a crucial ingredient in the theory of solid abelian groups; without it one cannot give any nonzero examples of solid abelian groups. We discuss a recently completed formalisation of this result in the Lean theorem prover, and give a more detailed proof than those previously available in the literature. The proof is somewhat unusual in that it requires induction over ordinals -- a technique which has not previously been used to a great extent in formalised mathematics.

Abstract:Extending Martín Escardó's effectful forcing technique, we give a new proof of a well-known result: Brouwer's monotone bar theorem holds for any bar that can be realized by a functional of type $(\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}) \to \mathbb{N}$ in Gödel's System T. Effectful forcing is an elementary alternative to standard sheaf-theoretic forcing arguments, using ideas from programming languages, including computational effects, monads, the algebra interpretation of call-by-name ${\lambda}$-calculus, and logical relations. Our argument proceeds by interpreting System T programs as well-founded dialogue trees whose nodes branch on a query to an oracle of type $\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$, lifted to higher type along a call-by-name translation. To connect this interpretation to the bar theorem, we then show that Brouwer's famous "mental constructions" of barhood constitute an invariant form of these dialogue trees in which queries to the oracle are made maximally and in order.

Abstract:Dedekind's proof of the Cantor–Bernstein theorem is based on his chain theory, not on Cantor's well-ordering principle. A careful analysis of the proof extracts an argument structure that can be seen in the many other proofs that have been given since. I contend there is essentially one proof that comes in two variants due to Dedekind and Zermelo , respectively. This paper is a case study in analysing proofs of a single theorem within a given methodological framework, here Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (ZF). It uses tools from proof theory, but focuses on heuristic ideas that shape proofs and on logical strategies that help to construct them. It is rooted in a perspective on Beweistheorie that predates its close connection and almost exclusive attention to the goals of Hilbert's finitist consistency programme. This earlier perspective can be brought to life (only) with the support of powerful computational tools. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The notion of ‘simple proof’ - Hilbert's 24th problem’.

Abstract:We present fully formalized proofs of some central theorems from combinatorics. These are Dilworth's decomposition theorem, Mirsky's theorem, Hall's marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. Dilworth's decomposition theorem is the key result among these. It states that in any finite partially ordered set (poset), the size of a smallest chain cover and a largest antichain are the same. Mirsky's theorem is a dual of Dilworth's decomposition theorem, which states that in any finite poset, the size of a smallest antichain cover and a largest chain are the same. We use Dilworth's theorem in the proofs of Hall's Marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. The combinatorial objects involved in these theorems are sets and sequences. All the proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We develop a library of definitions and facts that can be used as a framework for formalizing other theorems on finite posets.

Abstract:Martin's Conjecture is a proposed classification of the definable functions on the Turing degrees. It is usually divided into two parts, the first of which classifies functions which are not above the identity and the second of which classifies functions which are above the identity. Slaman and Steel proved the second part of the conjecture for Borel functions which are order-preserving (i.e. which preserve Turing reducibility). We prove the first part of the conjecture for all order-preserving functions. We do this by introducing a class of functions on the Turing degrees which we call "measure-preserving" and proving that part 1 of Martin's Conjecture holds for all measure-preserving functions and also that all non-trivial order-preserving functions are measure-preserving. Our result on measure-preserving functions has several other consequences for Martin's Conjecture, including an equivalence between part 1 of the conjecture and a statement about the structure of the Rudin-Keisler order on ultrafilters on the Turing degrees.

Abstract:We present a simple proof of Toda′s result (Toda (1989), in "Proceedings, 30th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science," pp. 514-519), which states that ⊕ P is hard for the Polynomial Hierarchy under randomized reductions. Our approach is circuit-based in the sense that we start with uniform circuit definitions of the Polynomial Hierarchy and apply the Valiant-Vazirani lemma on these circuits (Valiant and Vazirani (1986), Thoeret. Comput. Sci.47, 85-93).

Abstract:We adapt Wei Zhang's proof of Kolyvagin's conjecture for modular abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ to rely on the BDP main conjecture instead of on the cyclotomic main conjecture. The main ingredient is a reduction to a case that is tractable by the BDP main conjecture, in a similar spirit to Zhang's reduction to the rank one case. By using the BDP main conjecture instead of the cyclotomic main conjecture, our approach is more suitable than Zhang's to extend to modular abelian varieties over totally real fields.

Abstract:The most versatile version of the classical divergence Borel-Cantelli lemma shows that for any divergent sequence of events $E_n$ in a probability space satisfying a quasi-independence condition, its corresponding limsup set $E_\infty$ has positive probability. In particular, it provides a lower bound on the probability of $E_\infty$. In this paper we establish a new version of this classical result which guarantees, under an additional mild assumption, that the probability of $E_\infty$ is not just positive but is one. Unlike existing optimal results, it is applicable within the setting of arbitrary probability spaces. We then go onto to consider a range of applications in number theory and dynamical systems. These include new results on the inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture. In particular, we establish alternatives to the classical (homogeneous) zero-one laws of Cassels and Gallagher and use them to resolve the so-called weak Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for an arbitrary rational inhomogeneous shift. As a bi-product, we establish the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with congruence relations. The applications to dynamical systems include new characterisations of Borel-Cantelli sequences and new dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas, as well as characterising Khintchine-type sequences for shrinking targets.

Abstract:A triangulation of a polytope into simplices is refined recursively. In every refinement round, some simplices which have been marked by an external algorithm are bisected and some others around also must be bisected to retain regularity of the triangulation. The ratio of the total number of marked simplices and the total number of bisected simplices is bounded from above. Binev, Dahmen and DeVore proved under a certain initial condition a bound that depends only on the initial triangulation. This thesis proposes a new way to obtain a better bound in any dimension. Furthermore, the result is proven for a weaker initial condition, invented by Alkämper, Gaspoz and Klöfkorn, who also found an algorithm to realise this condition for any regular initial triangulation. Supposably, it is the first proof for a Binev-Dahmen-DeVore theorem in any dimension with always practically realiseable initial conditions without an initial refinement. Additionally, the initialisation refinement proposed by Kossaczký and Stevenson is generalised, and the number of recursive bisections of one single simplex in one refinement round is bounded from above by twice the dimension, sharpening a result of Gallistl, Schedensack and Stevenson.
