Abstract:The dynamics of many socioeconomic systems is determined by the decision making process of agents. The decision process depends on agent's characteristics, such as preferences, risk aversion, behavioral biases, etc.. In addition, in some systems the size of agents can be highly heterogeneous leading to very different impacts of agents on the system dynamics. The large size of some agents poses challenging problems to agents who want to control their impact, either by forcing the system in a given direction or by hiding their intentionality. Here we consider the financial market as a model system, and we study empirically how agents strategically adjust the properties of large orders in order to meet their preference and minimize their impact. We quantify this strategic behavior by detecting scaling relations of allometric nature between the variables characterizing the trading activity of different institutions. We observe power law distributions in the investment time horizon, in the number of transactions needed to execute a large order and in the traded value exchanged by large institutions and we show that heterogeneity of agents is a key ingredient for the emergence of some aggregate properties characterizing this complex system.

Abstract:In this article we build a mathematical model for forest growth and we compare this model with a computer forest simulator named SORTIE. The main ingredient taken into account in both models is the competition for light between trees. The parameters of the mathematical model are estimated by using SORTIE model, when the parameter values of SORTIE model correspond to the ones previously evaluated for the Great Mountain Forest in USA. We see that the best fit of the parameters of the mathematical model is obtained when the competition for light influences only the growth rate of trees. We construct a size structured population dynamics model with one and two species and with spatial structure.

Abstract:Individual‐based forest simulators, such as TASS and SORTIE, are spatial stochastic processes that predict properties of populations and communities by simulating the fate of every plant throughout its life cycle. Although they are used for forest management and are able to predict dynamics of real forests, they are also analytically intractable, which limits their usefulness to basic scientists. We have developed a new spatial individual‐based forest model that includes a perfect plasticity formulation for crown shape. Its structure allows us to derive an accurate approximation for the individual‐based model that predicts mean densities and size structures using the same parameter values and functional forms, and also it is analytically tractable. The approximation is represented by a system of von Foerster partial differential equations coupled with an integral equation that we call the perfect plasticity approximation (PPA). We have derived a series of analytical results including equilibrium abundances for trees of different crown shapes, stability conditions, transient behaviors, such as the constant yield law and self‐thinning exponents, and two species coexistence conditions.

Abstract:Concerns about biodiversity and the long-term stability of forest ecosystems have lead to changing attitudes with respect to plantations. These artificial communities are ubiquitous, yet provide reduced habitat value in comparison to their naturally established counterparts, key factors being high density, homogeneous spatial structure, and their even-sized/aged nature. Transformation (manipulation of plantations to produce stands more reminiscent of natural ones) represents a major challenge for forest managers, and the shift from even- to uneven-aged stand management is far from simple. Tree species' attributes, too, vary dramatically. This study aims to identify generic aspects of forest population dynamics, in order to understand the temporal evolution of single species forest stands from an initial plantation lattice structure, into an ``old-growth'' state. This is achieved using a size-structured model, which implements simple rules to simulate the growth and fate of individuals in a spatial arena. We parameterise and discuss model behaviour in the context of available plantation and semi-natural data from Caledonian Scots Pine stands. We move on to illustrate the use of the model in predicting the outcome of silviculture, and discuss results in the context of stand transformation.

Abstract:Traditional approaches to ecosystem modelling have relied on spatially homogeneous approximations to interaction, growth and death. More recently, spatial interaction and dispersal have also been considered. While these leads to certain changes in fine-scale community dynamics, their effect is sometimes fairly minimal, and demographic scenarios in which this difference is important have not been systematically investigated. We take a simple mean-field model which simulates birth, growth and death processes, and rewrite it with spatially distributed discrete individuals. Each individual's growth and mortality is determined by a competition measure which captures the effects of neighbours in a way which retains the conceptual simplicity of a generic, analytically-solvable model. Although the model is generic, we here parameterise it using data from Caledonian Scots Pine stands. The dynamics of simulated populations, starting from a plantation lattice configuration, mirror those of well-established qualitative descriptions of natural forest stand behaviour; an analogy which assists in understanding the transition from artificial to old-growth structure. When parameterised for Scots Pine populations, the signature of spatial processes is evident, but their effect on first-order statistics, such as density and biomass, is fairly limited. The sensitivity of this result to variation in each individual rate parameter is investigated; distinct differences between spatial and mean-field models are seen only upon alteration of the interaction strength parameters, and in low density populations. Under the Scots pine parameterisation, dispersal also has an effect on spatial structure, but not density and biomass. Only in more intense competitive scenarios does altering the relative scales of dispersal and interaction lead to a clear signal in first order behaviour. The study acts as an important reminder that, even in scenarios where individual processes are localised in space, simple models are often sufficient to capture many population scale aspects of observed ecological dynamics.

Abstract:Ecological communities exhibit pervasive patterns and inter-relationships between size, abundance, and the availability of resources. We use scaling ideas to develop a unified, model-independent framework for understanding the distribution of tree sizes, their energy use and spatial distribution in tropical forests. We demonstrate that the scaling of the tree crown at the individual level drives the forest structure when resources are fully used. Our predictions match perfectly with the scaling behaviour of an exactly solvable self-similar model of a forest and are in good accord with empirical data. The range, over which pure power law behaviour is observed, depends on the available amount of resources. The scaling framework can be used for assessing the effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on ecosystem structure and functionality.

Abstract:We consider a hierarchically structured population in which the amount of resources an individual has access to is affected by individuals that are larger, and that the intake of resources by an individual only affects directly the growth rate of the individual. We formulate a deterministic model, which takes the form of a delay equation for the population birth rate. We also formulate an individual based stochastic model, and study the relationship between the two models. In particular the stationary birth rate of the deterministic model is compared to that of the quasi-stationary birth rate of the stochastic model. Since the quasi-stationary birth rate cannot be obtained explicitly, we derive a formula to approximate it. We show that the stationary birth rate of the deterministic model can be obtained as the large population limit of the quasi-stationary birth rate of the stochastic model. This relation suggests that the deterministic model is a good approximation of the stochastic model when the number of individuals is sufficiently large.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a structured population model with distributed delay. Our model incorporates two different types of nonlinearities. Specifically we assume that individual growth and mortality are affected by scramble competition, while fertility is affected by contest competition. In particular, we assume that there is a hierarchical structure in the population, which affects mating success. The dynamical behavior of the model is analysed via linearisation by means of semigroup and spectral methods. In particular, we introduce a reproduction function and use it to derive linear stability criteria for our model. Further we present numerical simulations to underpin the stability results we obtained.

Abstract:The hierarchical system of forest ecosystem models based on the theory of individual-based (structured) models of populations and communities is briefly described. New self-thinning models are integrated with tree stand models within a hierarchical system of models, aimed at assessing (quasi-) stable states of a forest ecosystem under given environment and management. Within the structural model of succession, the ergodic theorems in biology are proved. They assert that the areas of biocenoses in a climax state of association should be proportional to the proper times of their development in a succession line; the other characteristics of biocenoses should be also proportional to their own proper regeneration times in a climax state. A simple theoretical approach to estimating the deviation of the current state of forest ecosystem from its steady state is derived and applied to data from the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve. The results obtained can serve as a theoretical basis in numerical processing of data on ecological monitoring of undisturbed forest lands.

Abstract:We consider a population organised hierarchically with respect to size in such a way that the growth rate of each individual depends only on the presence of larger individuals. As a concrete example one might think of a forest, in which the incidence of light on a tree (and hence how fast it grows) is affected by shading by taller trees. The classic formulation of a model for such a size-structured population employs a first order quasi-linear partial differential equation equipped with a non-local boundary condition. However, the model can also be formulated as a delay equation, more specifically a scalar renewal equation, for the population birth rate. After discussing the well-posedness of the delay formulation, we analyse how many stationary birth rates the equation can have in terms of the functional parameters of the model. In particular we show that, under reasonable and rather general assumptions, only one stationary birth rate can exist besides the trivial one (associated to the state in which there are no individuals and the population birth rate is zero). We give conditions for this non-trivial stationary birth rate to exist and analyse its stability using the principle of linearised stability for delay equations. Finally, we relate the results to the alternative, partial differential equation formulation of the model.

Abstract:We discuss the scaling behavior of the self-organized critical forest-fire model on large length scales. As indicated in earlier publications, the forest-fire model does not show conventional critical scaling, but has two qualitatively different types of fires that superimpose to give the effective exponents typically measured in simulations. We show that this explains not only why the exponent characterizing the fire-size distribution changes with increasing correlation length, but allows also to predict its asymptotic value. We support our arguments by computer simulations of a coarse-grained model, by scaling arguments and by analyzing states that are created artificially by superimposing the two types of fires.

Abstract:Scaling relations formed in forest development processes are fairly important for understanding and predicting forest dynamics. During self-thinning of a relatively even-sized forest, tree abundance will decrease with an increase in average tree size, forming the size-abundance relation (SAR); while for a size-structured forest under the demographic equilibrium state, the frequency of trees also varies with size classes in a similar, decreasing pattern, manifesting as the size-frequency distribution (SFD). In the metabolic scaling theory (MST), the two scaling relations are considered to be consistent. However, in this paper, we proved that SFD can never be equivalent to SAR unless the growth rate of tree diameters is a constant. The reason derives from the time differences of transition between different size classes, which are influenced in SFD maintenance but not in SAR formation. Demographic equilibrium of a size structured forest requires a different resource allocation among different size classes at the same time, which contradicts the resource conservation during SAR formation in the self-thinning process. Consequently, if the rate of resource use per individual scales as a +2 power with its diameter according to MST, which led to the -2 power SAR, SFD can never be a -2 power-law distribution. The previous confusion between SFD of a size-structured forest and SAR formed during self-thinning processes may lead to many misunderstandings and unreliable predictions on forest structure and dynamics.

Abstract:<p>Tropical forests are a key determinant of the functioning of the Earth system, but remain a major source of uncertainty in carbon cycle models and climate change projections. In this study, we present an updated land model (LM3PPA‐TV) to improve the representation of tropical forest structure and dynamics in Earth system models (ESMs). The development and parameterization of LM3PPA‐TV drew on extensive datasets on tropical tree traits and long‐term field censuses from Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. The model defines a new plant functional type (PFT) based on the characteristics of shade‐tolerant, tropical tree species, implements a new growth allocation scheme based on realistic tree allometries, incorporates hydraulic constraints on biomass accumulation, and features a new compartment for tree branches and branch fall dynamics. Simulation experiments reproduced observed diurnal and seasonal patterns in stand‐level carbon and water fluxes, as well as mean canopy and understory tree growth rates, tree size distributions, and stand‐level biomass on BCI. Simulations at multiple sites captured considerable variation in biomass and size structure across the tropical forest biome, including observed responses to precipitation and temperature. Model experiments suggested a major role of water limitation in controlling geographical variation forest biomass and structure. However, the failure to simulate tropical forests under extreme conditions and the systematic underestimation of forest biomass in Paleotropical locations highlighted the need to incorporate variation in hydraulic traits and multiple PFTs that capture the distinct floristic composition across tropical domains. The continued pressure on tropical forests from global change demands models which are able to simulate alternative successional pathways and their pace to recovery. LM3PPA‐TV provides a tool to investigate geographic variation in tropical forests and a benchmark to continue improving the representation of tropical forests dynamics and their carbon storage potential in ESMs.</p>

Abstract:Population-level scaling in ecological systems arises from individual growth and death with competitive constraints. We build on a minimal dynamical model of metabolic growth where the tension between individual growth and mortality determines population size distribution. We include resource competition based on shared capture area separately. By varying relative rates of growth, death, and competitive attrition, we connect regular and random spatial patterns across sessile organisms from forests to ants, termites, and fairy circles. Then, we consider transient temporal dynamics in the context of asymmetric competition that primarily weakens the smaller of two competitors such as canopy shading or large colony dominance. When such competition couples slow timescales of growth with fast competitive death, it generates population shock waves similar to those observed in forest demographic data. Our minimal quantitative theory unifies spatiotemporal patterns across sessile organisms through local competition mediated by the laws of metabolic growth which in turn result from long-term evolutionary dynamics.

Abstract:In natural forests at a demographic equilibrium state, the size frequency distribution (SFD) of trees is linked with their size-dependent growth and mortality rates. While the mean growth rate (MGR) of each size class is generally used for determining the SFD, the variance in the growth rate (VGR) has always been ignored. Here, based on the analyses with Kolmogorov forward equation, we show that in general, the VGR can flatten the slope of the SFD and, in particular, can address the contradiction between the size-dependent MGR and the similar to 2 power-law SFD in the metabolic scaling theory. We traced the origin of the VGR to the intrinsic stochasticity in the allometric growth coefficients of trees and deduced its functional form based on variance propagation. Using the forest censuses data from Barro Colorado Island, we verified the prediction of the VGR and indicated its indispensability in the theory of forest size-structure formation. Toward improved uncertainty quantification in predictions of forest dynamics: A dynamical model of forest change

Abstract:Models of forest dynamics are an important tool to understand and predict forest responses to global change. Despite recent model development, predictions of forest dynamics under global change remain highly variable reflecting uncertainty in future conditions, forest demographic processes, and the data used to parameterize and validate models. Quantifying this uncertainty and accounting for it when making adaptive management decisions is critical to our ability to conserve forest ecosystems in the face of rapidly changing conditions. Dynamical spatio-temporal models (DSTMs) are a particularly powerful tool in this setting given they quantify and partition uncertainty in demographic models and noisy forest observations, propagate uncertainty to predictions of forest dynamics, and support refinement of predictions based on new data and improved ecological understanding. A major challenge to the application of DSTMs in applied forest ecology has been the lack of a scalable, theoretical model of forest dynamics that generates predictions at the stand level—the scale at which management decisions are made. We address this challenge by integrating a matrix projection model motivated by the well-known McKendrick-von Foerster partial differential equation for size-structured population dynamics within a Bayesian hierarchical DSTM informed by continuous forest inventory data. The model provides probabilistic predictions of species-specific demographic rates and changes in the size-species distribution over time. The model is applied to predict long-term dynamics (60+ years) within the Penobscot Experimental Forest in Maine, USA, quantifying and partitioning uncertainty in inventory observations, process-based predictions, and model parameters for nine Acadian Forest species. We find that uncertainty in inventory observations drives variability in predictions for most species and limits the inclusion of ecological detail within the DSTM. We conclude with a discussion of how DSTMs can be used to reduce uncertainty in predictions of forest dynamics under global change through informed model refinement and the assimilation of multiple forest data sources.

Abstract:We propose a dynamical model of price formation on a spatial market where sellers and buyers are placed on the nodes of a graph, and the distribution of the buyers depends on the positions and prices of the sellers. We find that, depending on the positions of the sellers and on the level of information available, the price dynamics of our model can either converge to fixed prices, or produce cycles of different amplitudes and periods. We show how to measure the strength of competition in a spatial network by extracting the exponent of the scaling of the prices with the size of the system. As an application, we characterize the different level of competition in street networks of real cities across the globe. Finally, using the model dynamics we can define a novel measure of node centrality, which quantifies the relevance of a node in a competitive market.

Abstract:Linking individual and stand-level dynamics during forest development reveals a scaling relationship between mean tree size and tree density in forest stands, which integrates forest structure and function. However, the nature of this so-called scaling law and its variation across broad spatial scales remain unquantified, and its linkage with forest demographic processes and carbon dynamics remains elusive. In this study, we develop a theoretical framework and compile a broad-scale dataset of long-term sample forest stands (n = 1,433) from largely undisturbed forests to examine the association of temporal mean tree size vs. density scaling trajectories (slopes) with biomass accumulation rates and the sensitivity of scaling slopes to environmental and demographic drivers. The results empirically demonstrate a large variation of scaling slopes, ranging from -4 to -0.2, across forest stands in tropical, temperate, and boreal forest biomes. Steeper scaling slopes are associated with higher rates of biomass accumulation, resulting from a lower offset of forest growth by biomass loss from mortality. In North America, scaling slopes are positively correlated with forest stand age and rainfall seasonality, thus suggesting a higher rate of biomass accumulation in younger forests with lower rainfall seasonality. These results demonstrate the strong association of the transient mean tree size vs. density scaling trajectories with forest demography and biomass accumulation rates, thus highlighting the potential of leveraging forest structure properties to predict forest demography, carbon fluxes, and dynamics at broad spatial scales.
