Abstract:We perform both analytical and numerical bifurcation analysis of a forest-grassland ecosystem model coupled with human interaction. The model consists of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations incorporating the human perception of forest/grassland value. The system displays multiple steady states corresponding to different forest densities as well as regimes characterized by both stable and unstable limit cycles. We derive analytically the conditions with respect to the model parameters that give rise to various types of codimension-one criticalities such as transcritical, saddle-node, and Andronov-Hopf bifurcations and codimension-two criticalities such as cusp and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. We also perform a numerical continuation of the branches of limit cycles. By doing so, we reveal turning points of limit cycles marking the appearance/disappearance of sustained oscillations. These far-from-equilibrium criticalities that cannot be detected analytically give rise to the abrupt loss of the sustained oscillations, thus leading to another mechanism of catastrophic shifts

Abstract:In this work, we study the dynamics of a spatially heterogeneous single population model with the memory effect and nonlinear boundary condition. By virtue of the implicit function theorem and Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, spatially nonconstant positive steady state solutions appear from two trivial solutions, respectively. By using bifurcation analysis, the Hopf bifurcation associated with one spatially nonconstant positive steady state is found to occur. The results complement the existing ones. Specifically, it is found that with the interaction of spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear boundary condition, when the memory term is stronger than the interaction of the interior reaction term and the boundary one, the memory-based diffusive model has a single stability switch from stability to instability, with the increase of the delayed memory value. Therefore, the memory delay will lead to a single stability switch of such memory-based diffusive model and consequently the Hopf bifurcation will happen in the model.

Abstract:In this paper, a heterogeneous single population model with memory effect and nonlinear boundary condition is investigated. By virtue of the implicit function theorem and Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, spatially nonconstant positive steady state solutions appear from two trivial solutions, respectively. Through the distribution of the eigenvalues and bifurcation analysis, sufficient conditions for the occurrence of the Hopf bifurcation associated with one spatially nonconstant positive steady state are obtained. Results about the stability associated with the other one are also yielded. It is found that with the interaction of memory delay, spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear boundary condition, the Hopf bifurcation will happen in such diffusive model. To be specific, the memory delay could induce a single stability switch from stability to instability. As contrast to the diffusive model only with memory effect, the stability switch is independent of memory delay. The obtained results are applied to some specific models, from which we can find that the theoretical analysis is verified and the results enrich the existing ones.

Abstract:The hierarchical system of forest ecosystem models based on the theory of individual-based (structured) models of populations and communities is briefly described. New self-thinning models are integrated with tree stand models within a hierarchical system of models, aimed at assessing (quasi-) stable states of a forest ecosystem under given environment and management. Within the structural model of succession, the ergodic theorems in biology are proved. They assert that the areas of biocenoses in a climax state of association should be proportional to the proper times of their development in a succession line; the other characteristics of biocenoses should be also proportional to their own proper regeneration times in a climax state. A simple theoretical approach to estimating the deviation of the current state of forest ecosystem from its steady state is derived and applied to data from the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve. The results obtained can serve as a theoretical basis in numerical processing of data on ecological monitoring of undisturbed forest lands.

This paper explores the impact of spatial memory on the double-Hopf bifurcation and dynamics of the memory-based diffusion system. First, employing the center manifold theory and the normal form method, the explicit formulae for the coefficients in the normal form for the double-Hopf bifurcation of the general reaction-diffusion equations with memory-based self-diffusion and cross-diffusion are derived, which are expressed in terms of the original system parameters and can be used to simplify the system to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics revealed by the double-Hopf bifurcation. In addition, considering the effect of memory-based diffusion on the population dynamics of the predator-prey model with a Holling–Tanner-type functional response function, we improve the conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation and establish the conditions for the constant steady state to lose its stability through double-Hopf bifurcation. Further, by analyzing the normal form of the double-Hopf bifurcation, we prove that memory-based diffusion can lead to a bistable phenomenon, i.e., two stable spatially asynchronous periodic orbits with different wave numbers coexist in the model and can also lead to a spatially inhomogeneous quasi-periodic orbit, revealing that species of animals with spatial memory may survive in diverse patterns.

Abstract:In this work, we employ autoregressive models developed in financial engineering for modeling of forest dynamics. Autoregressive models have some theoretical advantage over currently employed forest modeling approaches such as Markov chains and individual-based models, as autoregressive models are both analytically tractable and operate with continuous state space. We performed a time series statistical analysis of forest biomass and basal areas recorded in Quebec provincial forest inventories from 1970 to 2007. The geometric random walk model adequately describes the yearly average dynamics. For individual patches, we fit an autoregressive process (AR) of order 1 capable to model negative feedback (mean-reversion). Overall, the best fit also turned out to be geometric random walk; however, the normality tests for residuals failed. In contrast, yearly means were adequately described by normal fluctuations, with annual growth on average of 2.3%, but with a standard deviation of order of 40%. We used a Bayesian analysis to account for the uneven number of observations per year. This work demonstrates that autoregressive models represent a valuable tool for the modeling of forest dynamics. In particular, they quantify the stochastic effects of environmental disturbances and develop predictive empirical models on short and intermediate temporal scales.

Emergent structure and dynamics of tropical forest-grassland landscapes

Abstract:Previous work indicates that tropical forest can exist as an alternative stable state to savanna. Therefore, perturbation by climate change or human impact may lead to crossing of a tipping point beyond which there is rapid forest dieback that is not easily reversed. A hypothesised mechanism for such bistability is a feedback between fire and vegetation, where fire spreads as a contagion process on grass patches. Theoretical models have largely implemented this mechanism implicitly, by assuming a threshold dependence of fire spread on flammable vegetation. Here, we show how the nonlinear dynamics and bistability emerge spontaneously, without assuming equations or thresholds for fire spread. We find that the forest geometry causes the nonlinearity that induces bistability. We demonstrate this in three steps. First, we model forest and fire as interacting contagion processes on grass patches, %using a cellular automaton showing that spatial structure emerges due to two counteracting effects on the forest perimeter: forest expansion by dispersal, and forest erosion by fires originating in adjacent grassland. Then, we derive a landscape-scale balance equation in which these two effects link forest geometry and dynamics: forest expands proportionally to its perimeter, while it shrinks proportionally to its perimeter weighted by adjacent grassland area. Finally, we show that these perimeter quantities introduce nonlinearity in our balance equation and lead to bistability. Relying on the link between structure and dynamics, we propose a forest resilience indicator that could be used for targeted conservation or restoration.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a single memory‐based diffusion population model with maturation delay, spatial heterogeneity, and Neumann boundary condition. When the integral of the intrinsic growth rate over the domain is nonnegative, we obtain sufficient conditions for the local stability of the positive steady state and the critical values of maturation delay for the associated Hopf bifurcation. When the integral of the intrinsic growth rate over the domain is negative, considering that the characteristic equation involves a non‐self‐adjoint operator and two delays, we utilize a geometric method to determine all bifurcation points in terms of memory and maturation delays. The impact of spatial heterogeneity on the distribution of solutions is also examined via numerical simulations. It is found that the core area of high population density is coincident with the source area of growth rate. This suggests the importance of spatial heterogeneity in shaping the distribution and dynamics of the species.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of disturbances on forest ecosystems by examining transient population dynamics in a controlled experiment carried out in a tropical rainforest. We first model the mean species abundance with a simple consumer-resource model, which is then extended into two multi-species frameworks for community dynamics: a neutral model, which emphasises the ability of any species to recover independently of the others; and a non-neutral one, where species interactions play an important role in reconstructing ecosystem's structure and patterns. The results indicate that, while both frameworks accurately describe correlation functions and mean-variance relations, the non-neutral model more effectively captures community structure as revealed by an evenness indicator. This suggests that interspecific interactions significantly influence the ecosystem's ability to respond to disturbances, providing deeper insights into the recovery dynamics of forest ecosystems.

Abstract:ContextQuantitative models of forest dynamics have followed a progression toward methods with increased detail, complexity, and spatial extent.ObjectivesWe highlight milestones in the development of forest dynamics models and identify future research and application opportunities.MethodsWe reviewed milestones in the evolution of forest dynamics models from the 1930s to the present with emphasis on forest growth and yield models and forest landscape models We combined past trends with emerging issues to identify future needs.ResultsHistorically, capacity to model forest dynamics at tree, stand, and landscape scales was constrained by available data for model calibration and validation; computing capacity; model applicability to real-world problems; and ability to integrate biological, social, and economic drivers of change. As computing and data resources improved, a new class of spatially explicit forest landscape models emerged.ConclusionsWe are at a point of great opportunity in development and application of forest dynamics models. Past limitations in computing capacity and in data suitable for model calibration or evaluation are becoming less restrictive. Forest landscape models, in particular, are ready to transition to a central role supporting forest management, planning, and policy decisions.RecommendationsTransitioning forest landscape models to a central role in applied decision making will require greater attention to evaluating performance; building application support staffs; expanding the included drivers of change, and incorporating metrics for social and economic inputs and outputs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider two attractive stochastic spatial models in which each site can be in state 0, 1 or 2: Krone's model in which 0=vacant, 1=juvenile and 2=a mature individual capable of giving birth, and the Staver-Levin forest model in which 0=grass, 1=sapling and 2=tree. Our first result shows that if (0,0) is an unstable fixed point of the mean-field ODE for densities of 1's and 2's then when the range of interaction is large, there is positive probability of survival starting from a finite set and a stationary distribution in which all three types are present. The result we obtain in this way is asymptotically sharp for Krone's model. However, in the Staver-Levin forest model, if (0,0) is attracting then there may also be another stable fixed point for the ODE, and in some of these cases there is a nontrivial stationary distribution.

Abstract:The role of forest heterogeneity in the long-term, large-scale dynamics of forest fires is investigated by means of a cellular automata model and mean field approximation. Heterogeneity was conceived as trees (or acres of forest) with distinct strengths of resistance to burn. The scaling analysis of fire-size and fire-lifetime frequency distributions in the non-interacting fire steady-state limit indicates the breakdown of the power-law behavior whenever the resistance strength parameter R exceeds a certain value. For higher resistant strength, exponential behavior characterizes the frequency distributions, while power-law like behavior was observed for the lower resistant case in the same manner as reported in the literature for a homogeneous counterpart model. For the intermediate resistance strength, however, it may be described either by a stretched exponential or by a power-law plot whenever the fraction of recovering empty cells by susceptible trees not-exceeds or exceeds a certain threshold respectively, also suggesting a dynamical percolation transition with respect to the stationary forest density.

Abstract:In this research, we examine a diffusive predator–prey model with spatial memory. We begin by checking that the suggested model has a unique solution that is boundedness. The stability of each equilibrium is then examined. Local and global stability as well as bifurcations are investigated in the non-delayed model at stationary equilibrium. Then, we investigate the Hopf bifurcation using the delay as the bifurcation parameter. In order to back up our theoretical findings, we then give some numerical simulations.

Abstract:A stochastic forest model of young and old age class trees is studied. First, we prove existence, uniqueness and boundedness of global nonnegative solutions. Second, we investigate asymptotic behavior of solutions by giving a sufficient condition for sustainability of the forest. Under this condition, we show existence of a Borel invariant measure. Third, we present several sufficient conditions for decline of the forest. Finally, we give some numerical examples.

Non-reciprocal hidden degrees of freedom: A unifying perspective on memory, feedback, and activity

Abstract:We show that memory, feedback, and activity are all describable by the same unifying concept, that is non-reciprocal (NR) coupling. We demonstrate that characteristic thermodynamic features of these intrinsically nonequilibrium systems are reproduced by low-dimensional Markovian networks with NR coupling, which we establish as minimal models for such complex systems. NR coupling alone implies a violation of the fluctuation-dissipation relation, which is inevitably connected to entropy production, i.e., irreversibility. Hiding the NR coupled degrees of freedom renders non-Markovian, one-variable Langevin descriptions with complex types of memory, for which we find a generalized second law involving information flow. We demonstrate that non-monotonic memory is inextricably linked to NR coupling. Furthermore, we discuss discrete time delay as the infinite-dimensional limit, and find a divergent entropy production, corresponding to unbounded cost for precisely storing a Brownian trajectory.

Abstract:Forest fire spreading is a complex phenomenon characterized by a stochastic behavior. Nowadays, the enormous quantity of georeferenced data and the availability of powerful techniques for their analysis can provide a very careful picture of forest fires opening the way to more realistic models. We propose a stochastic spreading model continuous in space and time that has the potentiality to use such data in their full power. The state of the forest fire is described by the subprobability densities of the green trees and of the trees on fire that can be estimated thanks to data coming from satellites and earth detectors. The fire dynamics is encoded into a kernel function that can take into account wind conditions, land slope, spotting phenomena, and so on, bringing to a system of integrodifferential equations whose solutions provide the evolution in time of the subprobability densities. That makes the model complementary to models based on cellular automata that furnish single instantiations of the stochastic phenomenon. Moreover, stochastic models based on cellular automata can be derived from the present model by space and time discretization. Existence and uniqueness of the solutions is proved by using Banach's fixed‐point theorem. The asymptotic behavior of the model is analyzed as well. By specifying a particular structure for the kernel, we obtain numerical simulations of the fire spreading under different conditions. For example, in the case of a forest fire evolving toward a river, the simulations show that the probability density of the trees on fire is different from zero beyond the river due to the spotting phenomenon. The kernel could be slightly modified to include firefighters interventions and weather changes.
