Abstract:The exact agreement between the Sommerfeld (1916) and Dirac (1928) results for the energy levels of the relativistic hydrogen atom (the so-called "Sommerfeld puzzle") is analyzed and extended. Werner Heisenberg called this coincidence a `miracle' but Erwin Schroedinger described it as a fortuitous computational accident.

Abstract:In this work we revisit the famous Fermi two-atom problem, which concerns how relativistic causality impacts atomic transition probabilities, using the tools from relativistic quantum information and algebraic quantum field theory. The problem has sparked different analyses from many directions and angles since the proposed solution by Buchholz and Yngvason [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 , 613 (1994)]. Some of these analyses employ various approximations, heuristics, and perturbative methods, which tends to render some of the otherwise useful insights somewhat obscured. It is also noted that they are all studied in flat spacetime. We show that current tools in relativistic quantum information, combined with an algebraic approach to quantum field theory, are now powerful enough to provide fuller and cleaner analysis of the Fermi two-atom problem for arbitrary curved spacetimes in a completely nonperturbative manner. Our result gives the original solution of Buchholz and Yngvason a very operational reinterpretation in terms of qubits interacting with a quantum field and allows for various natural generalizations and inclusion of detector-based local measurement for the quantum field [ Phys. Fundamental role of Dirac supersingletons in particle theory

Abstract:As shown in the famous Dyson's paper "Missed Opportunities", even from purely mathematical considerations (without any physics) it follows that Poincare quantum symmetry is a special degenerate case of de Sitter quantum symmetries. Then the question arises why in particle physics Poincare symmetry works with a very high accuracy. The usual answer to this question is that a theory in de Sitter space becomes a theory in Minkowski space in the formal limit when the radius of de Sitter space tends to infinity. However, de Sitter and Minkowski spaces are purely classical concepts, and in quantum theory the answer to this question must be given only in terms of quantum concepts. At the quantum level, Poincare symmetry is a good approximate symmetry if the eigenvalues of the representation operators $M_{4\mu}$ of the anti-de Sitter algebra are much greater than the eigenvalues of the operators $M_{\mu\nu}$ ($\mu,\nu=0,1,2,3$). We show that explicit solutions with such properties exist within the framework of the approach proposed by Flato and Fronsdal where particles that are considered elementary in the standard theory are bound states of two Dirac singletons.

Abstract:If a mathematical theory contains incompatible postulates then it is likely that the theory will produce theorems or results that are contradictory. It will be shown that this is the case with Dirac field theory. An example of such a contradiction is the problem asociated with evaluating the Schwinger term. It is generally known that different ways of evaluating this quantity yield different results. It will be shown that the reason for this is that Dirac field theory is mathematically inconsistent, i.e., it contains incompatible assumptions or postulates. The generally accepted definition of the vacuum state must be modified in order to create a consistent theory.

Disarming the Ultimate Historical Challenge to Scientific Realism

Abstract:Probably the most dramatic historical challenge to scientific realism concerns Arnold Sommerfeld's ([1916]) derivation of the fine structure energy levels of hydrogen. Not only were his predictions good, he derived exactly the same formula that would later drop out of Dirac's 1928 treatment (something not possible using 1925 Schrödinger-Heisenberg quantum mechanics). And yet the most central elements of Sommerfeld's theory were not even approximately true: his derivation leans heavily on a classical approach to elliptical orbits, including the necessary adjustments to these orbits demanded by relativity. Even physicists call Sommerfeld's success a 'miracle', which rather makes a joke of the so-called 'no miracles argument'. However, this can all be turned around. Discrete Symmetry in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:EPR experiment on $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system in 1998\cite{1} strongly hints that one should use operators $\hat{E}_c=-i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}$ and $\hat{\bf p}_c=i\hbar\nabla$ for the wavefunction (WF) of antiparticle. Further analysis on Klein-Gordon (KG) equation reveals that there is a discrete symmetry hiding in relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM) that ${\cal P}{\cal T}={\cal C}$. Here ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ means the (newly defined) combined space-time inversion (with ${\bf x}\to -{\bf x}, t\to-t$), while ${\cal C}$ the transformation of WF $\psi$ between particle and its antiparticle whose definition is just residing in the above symmetry. After combining with Feshbach-Villars (FV) dissociation of KG equation ($\psi=\phi+\chi$)\cite{2}, this discrete symmetry can be rigorously reformulated by the invariance of coupling equation of $\phi$ and $\chi$ under either the combined space-time inversion ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ or the mass inversion ($m\to -m$), which makes the KG equation a self-consistent theory. Dirac equation is also discussed accordingly. Various applications of this discrete symmetry are discussed, including the prediction of antigravity between matter and antimatter as well as the reason why we believe neutrinos are likely the tachyons.

On a paradox in quantum mechanics and its resolution

Abstract:Consider a free Schrödinger particle inside an interval with walls characterized by the Dirichlet boundary condition. Choose a parabola as the normalized state of the particle that satisfies this boundary condition. To calculate the variance of the Hamiltonian in that state, one needs to calculate the mean value of the Hamiltonian and that of its square. If one uses the standard formula to calculate these mean values, one obtains both results without difficulty, but the variance unexpectedly takes an imaginary value. If one uses the same expression to calculate these mean values but first writes the Hamiltonian and its square in terms of their respective eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, one obtains the same result as above for the mean value of the Hamiltonian but a different value for its square (in fact, it is not zero); hence, the variance takes an acceptable value. From whence do these contradictory results arise? The latter paradox has been presented in the literature as an example of a problem that can only be properly solved by making use of certain fundamental concepts within the general theory of linear operators in Hilbert spaces. Here, we carefully review those concepts and apply them in a detailed way to resolve the paradox. Our results are formulated within the natural framework of wave mechanics, and to avoid inconveniences that the use of Dirac's symbolic formalism could bring, we avoid the use of that formalism throughout the article. In addition, we obtain a resolution of the paradox in an entirely formal way without addressing the restrictions imposed by the domains of the operators involved. We think that the content of this paper will be useful to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to their instructors.

The Frauchiger-Renner Gedanken Experiment: Flaws in Its Analysis -- How Logic Works in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In a publication (Nature Comm. 3711, 9 (2018)), Daniela Frauchiger and Renato Renner used a Wigner/friend gedanken experiment to argue that quantum mechanics cannot describe complex systems involving measuring agents. They were able to produce a contradictory statement starting with four statements about measurements performed on an entangled spin system. These statements needed to be combined using the transitive property of logic: If A implies B and B implies C, then A implies C. However, in combining successive statements for the Frauchiger-Renner gedanken experiment we show that quantum mechanics does not obey transitivity and that this invalidates their analysis. We also demonstrate that certain pairs of premises among the four statements are logically incompatible, meaning that the statements cannot all be used at once. In addition, to produce the contradiction, Frauchiger and Renner choose a particular run, which they call the `OK' -- `OKbar' one. However, the restriction to this case invalidates three of the four statements. Hence, there are three separate problems with logic in the 2018 Nature Communication publication. We also demonstrate the violation of the rules of logic -- including transitivity -- in certain situations in quantum mechanics in general. We use the Frauchiger-Renner gedanken experiment as a laboratory to explore a number of topics in quantum mechanics including wavefunction logic, Wigner/friend experiments, and the deduction of mathematical statements from knowledge of a wavefunction and obtain a number of interesting results. We show that Wigner/friend experiments of the type used by Frauchiger and Renner are impossible if the Wigner measurements are performed on macroscopic objects. Abstract:For muonic hydrogen, positronium, and ordinary hydrogen, we show that the existence of a relativistic two-body wave equation whose energy levels are physically accurate to order $(Z\alpha )^4$ (where $Z\alpha$ is the binding coupling constant) implies a previously unknown two-body Sommerfeld energy formula which can be used to predict energy terms to order $(Z\alpha )^6$ using simple algebra. Two such terms are verified to be physically correct by earlier $(Z\alpha )^6$ calculations for positronium. For muonic hydrogen and ordinary hydrogen, these terms are predictions.

Abstract:Feynman stated that the double-slit experiment "…has in it the heart of quantum mechanics. In reality, it contains the only mystery" and that "nobody can give you a deeper explanation of this phenomenon than I have given; that is, a description of it" [Feynman R, Leighton R, Sands M (1965) The Feynman Lectures on Physics]. We rise to the challenge with an alternative to the wave function-centered interpretations: instead of a quantum wave passing through both slits, we have a localized particle with nonlocal interactions with the other slit. Key to this explanation is dynamical nonlocality, which naturally appears in the Heisenberg picture as nonlocal equations of motion. This insight led us to develop an approach to quantum mechanics which relies on pre- and postselection, weak measurements, deterministic, and modular variables. We consider those properties of a single particle that are deterministic to be primal. The Heisenberg picture allows us to specify the most complete enumeration of such deterministic properties in contrast to the Schrödinger wave function, which remains an ensemble property. We exercise this approach by analyzing a version of the double-slit experiment augmented with postselection, showing that only it and not the wave function approach can be accommodated within a time-symmetric interpretation, where interference appears even when the particle is localized. Although the Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures are equivalent formulations, nevertheless, the framework presented here has led to insights, intuitions, and experiments that were missed from the old perspective.

Abstract:In [Found. Phys. 48.12 (2018): 1669], the notion of 'epistemic horizon' was introduced as an explanation for many of the puzzling features of quantum mechanics. There, it was shown that Lawvere's theorem, which forms the categorical backdrop to phenomena such as Gödelian incompleteness, Turing undecidability, Russell's paradox and others, applied to a measurement context, yields bounds on the maximum knowledge that can be obtained about a system, which produces many paradigmatically quantum phenomena. We give a brief presentation of the framework, and then demonstrate how it naturally yields Bell inequality violations. We then study the argument due to Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, and show how the counterfactual inference needed to conclude the incompleteness of the quantum formalism is barred by the epistemic horizon. Similarly, the paradoxes due to Hardy and Frauchiger-Renner are discussed, and found to turn on an inconsistent combination of information from incompatible contexts.

Abstract:The article raises the question of the strange behavior of electrons in an atom, when the electronic orbitals of the P- and d-states of the atom have the form of eights with nodal points in the nucleus of the atom, as well as the discovery of the mysterious K-capture of an electron when the nuclei of atoms of some isotopes of chemical elements someh they sometimes capture an electron from the inner (K- or L-) electron shell of the atom. It has not been possible to explain these phenomena within the framework of the atomic model existing in quantum electrodynamics. In the new model of the atom, proposed by Professor Lev Sapogin in Unitary Quantum Theory, the electron makes quantum leaps within the orbital not randomly, as physicists thought, but through the nucleus of the atom, each time tunneling through it. In this case, the quantization of the energy levels (orbitals) of electrons in an atom is explained by the distribution of nodes and antinodes in a standing wave of an electron, and an integer number of de Broglie wavelengths should be located in the diameter of the electron orbital. The article shows the dependence of the magnitude of the interaction constants in the hydrogen nucleus and, in particular, the fine structure constant, discovered by the CMS cooperation in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in 2019, during reactions in pp collisions with energies from 1 TeV to 13 TeV and an intranuclear pressure of 1035 Pascal. Abstract:The extended algebra of the free electromagnetic fields, including infrared singular fields, and the almost radial gauge, both introduced earlier, are postulated for the construction of the quantum electrodynamics in a Hilbert space (no indefinite metric). Both the Dirac and electromagnetic fields are constructed up to the first order (based on the incoming fields) as operators in the Hilbert space, and shown to have physically well interpretable asymptotic behavior in far past and spacelike separations. The Dirac field tends in far past to the free incoming field, carrying its own Coulomb field, but with no 'soft photon dressing'. The spacelike asymptotic limit of the electromagnetic field yields a conserved operator field, which is a sum of contributions of the incoming Coulomb field, and of the low energy limit of the incoming free electromagnetic field. This should agree with the operator field similarly constructed with the use of outgoing fields, which then relates these past and future characteristics. Higher orders are expected not to change this picture, but their construction needs a treatment of the UV question, which has not been undertaken and remains a problem for further investigation.

Abstract:We study the Schroedinger equation of a class of two-level systems under the action of a periodic time-dependent external field in the situation where the energy difference 2epsilon between the free energy levels is sufficiently small with respect to the strength of the external interaction. Under suitable conditions we show that this equation has a solution in terms of converging power series expansions in epsilon. In contrast to other expansion methods, like in the Dyson expansion, the method we present is not plagued by the presence of ``secular terms''. Due to this feature we were able to prove absolute and uniform convergence of the Fourier series involved in the computation of the wave functions and to prove absolute convergence of the epsilon-expansions leading to the ``secular frequency'' and to the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of the wave function.

Abstract:Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is considered the most accurate theory in the history of science. However, this precision is based on a single experimental value: the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron (g-factor). An examination of the history of QED reveals that this value was obtained in a very suspicious way. These suspicions include the case of Karplus & Kroll, who admitted to having lied in their presentation of the most relevant calculation in the history of QED. As we will demonstrate in this paper, the Karplus & Kroll affair was not an isolated case, but one in a long series of errors, suspicious coincidences, mathematical inconsistencies and renormalized infinities swept under the rug.

Abstract:In 1926, Erwin Schrodinger wrote a series of papers that invented wave mechanics and set the foundation for much of the single-particle quantum mechanics that we teach today. In his first paper, he solved the Schrodinger equation using the Laplace method, which is a technique that is quite powerful, but rarely taught. This is unfortunate, because it opens the door to examining quantum mechanics from a complex-analysis perspective. Gaining this experience with complex analysis is a useful notion to consider when teaching quantum mechanics, as these techniques can be widely used outside of quantum mechanics, unlike the standard Frobenius summation method, which is normally taught, but rarely used elsewhere. The Laplace method strategy is subtle and no one has carefully gone through the arguments that Schrodinger did in this first paper, instead it is often just stated that the solution was adopted from Schlesinger's famous differential equation textbook. In this work, we show how the Laplace method can be used to solve for the quantum-mechanical energy eigenfunctions of the hydrogen atom, following Schrodinger's original solution, with all the necessary details, and illustrate how it can be taught in advanced instruction; it does require familiarity with intermediate-level complex analysis, which we also briefly review.

Abstract:The Standard Model is an up-to-date theory that best summarizes current knowledge in particle physics. Although some problems still remain open, it represents the leading model which all physicists refer to. One of the pillars which underpin the Standard Model is represented by the Lorentz invariance of the equations that form its backbone. These equations made it possible to predict the existence of particles and phenomena that experimental physics had not yet been able to detect. The first hint of formulating a fundamental theory of particles can be found in the 1932 Majorana equation, formulated when electrons and protons were the only known particles. Today we know that parts of the hypotheses set by Majorana were not correct, but his equation hid concepts that are found in the Standard Model. In this study, the Majorana equation is revisited and solved for free particles. The time-like, light-like and space-like solutions, represented by infinite-component wave functions, are discussed.

Abstract:Linac-ring analogues of the LHC and VLHC based standard type ep collider proposals are discussed. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities can be obtained with TESLA-like linacs, whereas essential modifications are required for CLIC technology. The physics search potential of proposed ep colliders is demonstrated using pair production of heavy quarks as an example.

Abstract:The 1953 and 1960 Renninger negative-result thought experiments illustrate conceptual paradoxes in the Copenhagen formulation of quantum mechanics. In the 1953 paradox we can infer the presence of a detector in one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer without any particle interacting with the detector. In the 1960 paradox we can infer the collapse of a wavefunction without any change in the state of a detector. I resolve both of these paradoxes by using a time-symmetric formulation of quantum mechanics. I also describe a real experiment that can distinguish between the Copenhagen and time-symmetric formulations.
