Abstract:Based on the results of F. Wilf on the need to take into account the quantum-mechanical correspondence rules in the Dirac equation for an electron, it was shown that the equation obtained by giving physical meaning to $\alpha$-Dirac operators should be considered as a phenomenological equation for a particle of non-zero size - the EM polaron, previously introduced by the author. This allows a solution to be found to the inherent paradox of the Dirac equation, which consists of the equality of the velocity of the moving particles to the speed of light $c$ in a vacuum, which is a priori unobtainable, and to understand the physical essence of spin as the intrinsic mechanical moment of an EM polaron. It is also shown that the Dirac-Wilf equation for a single spatial dimension can be considered a generalization of the Schrodinger equation for relativistic energies.

Abstract:Free electron beams and their quantum coupling with photons is attracting a rising interest due to the basic questions it addresses and the cutting-edge technology these particles are involved in, such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and quantum computation. This work investigates theoretically the concept of electron-photon coupling in the spatial domain. Their interaction is discussed as a thought experiment of spontaneous photon emission from a dual-path free-electron (free-e) beam. We discuss a retro-causal paradox that may emerge from naively extending perceptions of single-path e-photon coupling to transversely separated paths, and its resolution through the physics of two-particle interference. The precise spatial control of electrons and photons within e-microscopes enables manipulation of their respective states, thus, such instruments can harness position-encoded free-e qubits for novel quantum sensing and the transfer of quantum information.

Abstract:The paper analyzes time propagation of Dirac observables - using Heisenberg representation - in the light of various pseudodifferential operator algebras (cf. [Co3], [Co15], [Co16]). Our theory gives (i) a mechanical angular momentum (the spin), but also (ii) another real 3-vector, travelling with the particle, with magnetic properties (its motion guided by the magnetic field around it, but not in the proper relativistic way). The above is discussed for potentials vanishing at infinity. But we also look at a Dirac particle in the field of a plane polarized X-ray wave, trying to analyze the Compton effect. The propagations of energy and momentum (in the X-ray's direction) are coupled - they allow a joint asymptotic expansion with terms representing change of energy by $nh\nu$ and momentum by $nh\nu/c$, with n=0,1,2, ..., valid for large frequencies, i.e., large momentum coordinates. Possible interpretation: A collision of the electron-positron with 0, 1, 2, ... n Photons of energy $h\nu$, affecting a change of energy-momentum. Note, this does not require QFT.

Abstract:Spatially entangled twin photons provide both promising resources for modern quantum information protocols, because of the high dimensionality of transverse entanglement, and a test of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen(EPR) paradox in its original form of position versus impulsion. Usually, photons in temporal coincidence are selected and their positions recorded, resulting in a priori assumptions on their spatio-temporal behavior. Here, we record on two separate electron-multiplying charge coupled devices (EMCCD) cameras twin images of the entire flux of spontaneous down-conversion. This ensures a strict equivalence between the subsystems corresponding to the detection of either position (image or near-field plane) or momentum (Fourier or far-field plane). We report then highest degree of paradox ever reported and show that this degree corresponds to the number of independent degrees of freedom or resolution cells, of the images.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the scattering of photons at electrons in models of non-relativistic quantum mechanical particles coupled minimally to the soft modes of the quantized electromagnetic field. We prove existence of scattering states involving an arbitrary number of asymptotic photons of arbitrarily high energy. Previously, upper bounds on the photon energies seemed necessary in the case of $n>1$ asymptotic photons and non-confined, non-relativistic charged particles.

Spacetime geometry of spin, polarization, and wavefunction collapse

Abstract:To incorporate quantum nonlocality into general relativity, we propose that the preparation and measurement of a quantum system are simultaneous events. To make progress in realizing this proposal, we introduce a spacetime geometry that is endowed with particles which have no distinct points in their worldlines; we call these particles 'pointons'. This new geometry recently arose in nonnoetherian algebraic geometry. We show that on such a spacetime, metrics are degenerate and tangent spaces have variable dimension. This variability then implies that pointons are spin-$\tfrac 12$ fermions that satisfy the Born rule, where a projective measurement of spin corresponds to an actual projection of tangent spaces of different dimensions. Furthermore, the $4$-velocities of pointons are necessarily replaced by their Hodge duals, and this transfer from vector to pseudo-tensor introduces a free choice of orientation that we identify with electric charge. Finally, a simple composite model of electrons and photons results from the metric degeneracy, and from this we obtain a new ontological model of photon polarization.

Abstract:The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox that argues for the incompleteness of quantum mechanics as a description of physical reality has been put to rest by John Bell's famous theorem, which inspired numerous experimental tests and brought about further affirmations of quantum reality. Nevertheless, in his writings and public presentations, Richard Feynman never acknowledged the significance of Bell's contribution to the resolution of the EPR paradox. In this paper, we discuss several variants of the Bell inequalities (including one that was specifically espoused by Feynman), and explore the ways in which they demolish the arguments in favor of local hidden-variable theories. We also examine the roots of Feynman's attitude toward Bell's theorem in the context of Feynman's special perspective on quantum mechanics.

Abstract:As is known, the existence of a small noncommutativity between coordinates would generate nonlocal self-interactions in the electromagnetic theory. To explore some consequences of this effect on the propagation of photons we consider Moyal space half-filled with a static and homogeneous electric field and analyze electromagnetic fluctuations on top of this step-like background. Both the localization of photons and the possibility of photon production by strong electric fields are addressed. Several aspects of the Klein paradox in this setup are discussed as well.

Abstract:A Lorentz-covariant system of wave equations is formulated for a quantum-mechanical three-body system in one space dimension, comprised of one photon and two identical massive spin one-half Dirac particles, which can be thought of as two electrons (or alternatively, two positrons). Manifest covariance is achieved using Dirac's formalism of multi-time wave functions, i.e, wave functions $\Psi(\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2})$ where $\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2}$ are generic spacetime events of the photon and two electrons respectively. Their interaction is implemented via a Lorentz-invariant no-crossing-of-paths boundary condition at the coincidence submanifolds $\{\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}}=\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1}\}$ and $\{\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}}=\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2}\}$ compatible with conservation of probability current. The corresponding initial-boundary value problem is shown to be well-posed under the additional assumption of anti-symmetry given by the Pauli exclusion principle, and a closed-form solution to the ensuing coupled system of Klein-Gordon and transport equations is given.

Abstract:In this work we revisit the famous Fermi two-atom problem, which concerns how relativistic causality impacts atomic transition probabilities, using the tools from relativistic quantum information and algebraic quantum field theory. The problem has sparked different analyses from many directions and angles since the proposed solution by Buchholz and Yngvason [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 , 613 (1994)]. Some of these analyses employ various approximations, heuristics, and perturbative methods, which tends to render some of the otherwise useful insights somewhat obscured. It is also noted that they are all studied in flat spacetime. We show that current tools in relativistic quantum information, combined with an algebraic approach to quantum field theory, are now powerful enough to provide fuller and cleaner analysis of the Fermi two-atom problem for arbitrary curved spacetimes in a completely nonperturbative manner. Our result gives the original solution of Buchholz and Yngvason a very operational reinterpretation in terms of qubits interacting with a quantum field and allows for various natural generalizations and inclusion of detector-based local measurement for the quantum field [ Phys. Abstract:Since Einstein's equations $G_{ik} = 8\pi \, G \, T_{ik} \, / c^4 $ relate the metric $g_{ik}$ of spacetime to the energy-momentum tensor $T_{ik}$ which is a quantum field, the metric $g_{ik}$ must be a quantum field. And since the metric $g_{ik}(x)$ is the dot product $g_{ik}(x) = \partial_i p^\alpha(x) \, \partial_k p_\alpha(x)$ of the derivatives of the points $p(x)$ of spacetime, spacetime itself must be a quantum field. Its points have average values $\langle p(x) \rangle$ that obey general relativity and fluctuations $q(x) = p(x) - \langle p(x) \rangle$ that when averaged turn Fourier exponentials $\exp(ikq)$ into gaussians $\exp(-\ell^2 \boldsymbol k^2)$. The gaussians make Feynman diagrams finite. Zero-point are also finite, but they are negative and too large to explain dark energy unless new bosonic fields are included.

Abstract:We considered Weinberg-like equations in the article (Dvoeglazov Rev. Mex. Fis. 65 , 612 2019) in order to construct the Feynman-Dyson propagator for the spin-1 particles. This construction is based on the concept of the Weinberg field as a system of four field functions differing by parity and by dual transformations. We also analyzed the recent controversy in the definitions of the Feynman-Dyson propagator for the field operator containing the self/anti-self charge conjugate states in the papers by Ahluwalia and Ernst (Int. J. Mod. Phys. E 2 , 397 1993), Ahluwalia et al. (Phys. Lett. B 687 , 248 2010), Ahluwalia (Phys. Rev. D 83 , 065017 2011) and by Rodrigues Jr et al. (Phys. Rev. D 86 , 128501 2012), Rodrigues Jr (2013), Rodrigues Jr (2012), Rodrigues Jr et al. (2014). The solution to this mathematical controversy is obvious. I proposed the necessary doubling of the Fock Space (as in the Barut and Ziino works), thus extending the corresponding Clifford Algebra. However, the logical interrelations of different mathematical foundations with physical interpretations are not so obvious. In this work we present some insights with respect to this for spin 1/2 and 1. Meanwhile, the N. Debergh et al article considered our old ideas of doubling the Dirac equation, and other forms of T- and PT-conjugation (Debergh et al. 2018). Both algebraic equation and for and 4-spinors have solutions with . The same is true for higher-spin equations (or they may even have more complicated dispersion relations). Meanwhile, every book considers the equality for both and spinors of the representation only, thus applying the Dirac-Feynman-Stueckelberg procedure for elimination of negative-energy solutions. The Fock space can be doubled on the quantum-field (QFT) level. In this article we give additional bases for the development of the correct theory of higher spin particles in QFT. It seems, that it is imposible to consider the relativistic quantum mechanics appropriately without negative energies, tachyons and appropriate forms of the discrete symmetries, and their actions on the corresponding physical states.

Abstract:The extended algebra of the free electromagnetic fields, including infrared singular fields, and the almost radial gauge, both introduced earlier, are postulated for the construction of the quantum electrodynamics in a Hilbert space (no indefinite metric). Both the Dirac and electromagnetic fields are constructed up to the first order (based on the incoming fields) as operators in the Hilbert space, and shown to have physically well interpretable asymptotic behavior in far past and spacelike separations. The Dirac field tends in far past to the free incoming field, carrying its own Coulomb field, but with no 'soft photon dressing'. The spacelike asymptotic limit of the electromagnetic field yields a conserved operator field, which is a sum of contributions of the incoming Coulomb field, and of the low energy limit of the incoming free electromagnetic field. This should agree with the operator field similarly constructed with the use of outgoing fields, which then relates these past and future characteristics. Higher orders are expected not to change this picture, but their construction needs a treatment of the UV question, which has not been undertaken and remains a problem for further investigation.

Abstract:George Francis FitzGerald is well known to have proposed in 1889, three years before Lorentz, the (physical) contraction of bodies moving in the hypothetical ether, as an "explanation" the null result of the Michelson and Morley experiment. Less known is his proposal of an ether-drift experiment based on an electrostatic system. A simple charged condenser suspended by a wire would be subject to a torque due to the earth's motion. The experiment was done by his pupil Trouton, with Noble, with null result. It was an important independent confirmation of the relativity principle, but it was substantially forgotten. It came back, under the form of a paradox, in the second half of the past century, usefully triggering an in-depth discussion on the electromagnetic energy and momentum flow in stationary systems, in which intuitively one thinks momentum should be zero, but it is not. The solution of the Trouton–Noble paradox, and similar ones, has led to a better understanding of the interplay between electromagnetic field and matter and to develop relevant examples for the university courses.

Abstract:We solve Dirac's equation for an electron in the field of a two-frequency plane electromagnetic wave, deriving general formulas for the probabilities of radiation of an electromagnetic wave by the electron, and for the probabilities for pair production by a photon when the two-frequency wave is circularly polarized. In contrast to the case of a monochromatic-plane electromagnetic wave, when an electron is in the field of a two-frequency circularly polarized wave, the emission rates of various "biharmonic photons" are affected by interference between the two waves. When a high-energy photon is in such a field, similar interference effects arise in the process of pair production.

Abstract:We develop an effective quantum electrodynamics for non-Hermitian (NH) Dirac materials interacting with photons. These systems are described by nonspatial symmetry protected Lorentz invariant NH Dirac operators, featuring two velocity parameters $v_{_{\rm H}}$ and $v_{_{\rm NH}}$ associated with the standard Hermitian and a masslike anti-Hermitian Dirac operators, respectively. They display linear energy-momentum relation, however, in terms of an effective Fermi velocity $v_{_{\rm F}}=\sqrt{v^2_{_{\rm H}}-v^2_{_{\rm NH}}}$ of NH Dirac fermions. Interaction with the fluctuating electromagnetic radiation then gives birth to an emergent Lorentz symmetry in this family of NH Dirac materials in the deep infrared regime, where the system possesses a unique terminal velocity $v_{_{\rm F}}=c$, with $c$ being the speed of light. While in two dimensions such a terminal velocity is set by the speed of light in the free space, dynamic screening in three spatial dimensions permits its nonuniversal values. Manifestations of such an emergent spacetime symmetry on the scale dependence of various physical observables in correlated NH Dirac materials are discussed.
