Abstract:This paper shows that the 4 axioms in the original Euclidean axiom set can be modernized as 6 axioms. The new axiom set introduces each axiom progressively, with no new concept in any of the axioms so that each axiom is testable. One of the new axiom states that Euclidean, spherical, and hyperbolic spaces are all strictly monotonic, which seems to be implied in all existing axiom sets for Euclidean geometry. A new implicit measure called local right ratio is introduced to replace parallel postulate, Riemann curvature tensor, or Gaussian curvature, to determine if the surface is locally flat, smooth, and curved at each point. Euclidean is shown to be the only surface to have constant right ratios.

Abstract:In the 1920s Heyting attempted at axiomatizing constructive geometry. Recently, von Plato used different concepts to axiomatize it. He used 14 axioms to formulate constructive apartness geometry, seven of which have occurrences of negation. In this paper we show with the help of ANDP, a theorem prover based on natural deduction, that four new axioms without negation, shorter and more intuitive, can replace seven of von Plato's 14 ones. Thus we obtained a near negation-free new system consisting of 11 axioms.

Abstract:We present an axiom system for the plane Euclidean geometry of ruler and dividers constructions, expressed in Tarski's language, with points as the only variables and with the predicates of betweenness and equidistance as the only primitive notions. All axioms are statements about at most 5 points, and it is known that no axiom system with all axioms statements about at most 4 points exists in that language, so the axiom system presented here can be called the simplest possible one. This corrects an error in Pambuccian (Math Chronicle 18:63–74, 1989) and shows that the Pasch axiom can be replaced by three statements, a 3-variable one, a 4-variable one, and a 5-variable one in the context of plane Euclidean geometry over Pythagorean ordered fields. Viewed from the vantage point of the weak elementary Euclidean Pasch-free geometry, the Pasch axiom turns out to be equivalent to both a universal 5-variable sentence and to a positive 5-variable sentence.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a new axiomatization of planar geometry by reinterpreting the original axioms of Euclid. The basic concept is still that of a line segment but its equivalent notion of betweenness is viewed as a topological, not a metric concept. That leads quickly to the notion of connectedness without any need to dwell on the definition of topology. In our approach line segments must be connected. Lines and planes are unified via the concept of separation: lines are separated into two components by each point, planes contain lines that separate them into two components as well. We add a subgroup of bijections preserving line segments and establishing unique isomorphism of basic geometrical sets, and the axiomatic structure is complete. Of fundamental importance is the Fixed Point Theorem that allows for creation of the concepts of length and congruency of line segments. The resulting structure is much more in sync with modern science than other axiomatic approaches to planar geometry. For instance, it leads naturally to the Erlangen Program in geometry. Our Conditions of Homogeneity and Rigidity have two interpretations. In physics, they correspond to the basic tenet that independent observers should arrive at the same measurement and are related to boosts in special relativity. In geometry, they mean uniqueness of congruence for certain geometrical figures. Another thread of the paper is the introduction of boundary at infinity, an important concept of modern mathematics, and linking of Pasch Axiom to endowing boundaries at infinity with a natural relation of betweenness. That way spherical geometry can be viewed as geometry of boundaries at infinity.

Abstract:Neutrices are additive subgroups of a nonstandard model of the real numbers. An external number is the algebraic sum of a nonstandard real number and a neutrix. Due to the stability by some shifts, external numbers may be seen as mathematical models for orders of magnitude. The algebraic properties of external numbers gave rise to the so-called solids, which are extensions of ordered fields, having a restricted distributivity law. However, necessary and sufficient conditions can be given for distributivity to hold. In this article we develop an axiomatics for the external numbers. The axioms are similar to, but mostly somewhat weaker than the axioms for the real numbers and deal with algebraic rules, Dedekind completeness and the Archimedean property. A structure satisfying these axioms is called a complete arithmetical solid. We show that the external numbers form a complete arithmetical solid, implying the consistency of the axioms presented. We also show that the set of precise elements (elements with minimal magnitude) has a built-in nonstandard model of the rationals. Indeed the set of precise elements is situated between the nonstandard rationals and the nonstandard reals whereas the set of non-precise numbers is completely determined.

History and Overview

Abstract:In this article, I develop an elementary system of axioms for Euclidean geometry. On one hand, the system is based on the symmetry principles which express our a priori ignorant approach to space: all places are the same to us (the homogeneity of space), all directions are the same to us (the isotropy of space) and all units of length we use to create geometric figures are the same to us (the scale invariance of space). On the other hand, through the process of algebraic simplification, this system of axioms directly provides Weyl's system of axioms for Euclidean geometry. The system of axioms, together with its a priori interpretation, offers new views to philosophy and pedagogy of mathematics: (i) it supports the thesis that Euclidean geometry is a priori, (ii) it supports the thesis that in modern mathematics the Weyl's system of axioms is dominant to Euclid's system because it reflects the a priori underlying symmetries, (iii) it gives a new and promising approach to learn geometry which, through the Weyl's system of axioms, leads from the essential geometric symmetry principles of the mathematical nature directly to modern mathematics.
A Complete Finite Axiomatisation of the Equational Theory of Common Meadows

Abstract:We analyse abstract data types that model numerical structures with a concept of error. Specifically, we focus on arithmetic data types that contain an error value $\bot$ whose main purpose is to always return a value for division. To rings and fields, we add a division operator $x/y$ and study a class of algebras called common meadows wherein $x/0 = \bot$. The set of equations true in all common meadows is named the equational theory of common meadows. We give a finite equational axiomatisation of the equational theory of common meadows and prove that it is complete and that the equational theory is decidable.

Abstract:It is well known that in q-matroids, axioms for independent spaces, bases, and spanning spaces differ from the classical case of matroids, since the straightforward q-analogue of the classical axioms does not give a q-matroid. For this reason, a fourth axiom has been proposed. In this paper we show how we can describe these spaces with only three axioms, providing two alternative ways to do that. As an application, we show direct cryptomorphisms between independent spaces and circuits and between independent spaces and bases.

Abstract:Richmond and Richmond (American Mathematical Monthly 104 (1997), 713--719) proved the following theorem: If, in a metric space with at least five points, all triangles are degenerate, then the space is isometric to a subset of the real line. We prove that the hypothesis is unnecessarily strong: In a metric space on $n$ points, fewer than $7n^2/6$ suitably placed degenerate triangles suffice. However, fewer than $n(n-1)/2$ degenerate triangles, no matter how cleverly placed, never suffice.

Abstract:The program Reverse Mathematics in the foundations of mathematics seeks to identify the minimal axioms required to prove theorems of ordinary mathematics. One always assumes the base theory, a logical system embodying computable mathematics. As it turns out, many (most?) theorems are either provable in said base theory, or equivalent to one of four logical systems, collectively called the Big Five. This paper provides an overview of two recent extensions of the Big Five, working in Kohlenbach's higher-order framework. On one hand, we obtain a large number of equivalences between the second-order Big Five and third-order theorems of real analysis dealing with possibly discontinuous functions. On the other hand, we identify four new 'Big' systems, i.e. boasting many equivalences over the base theory, namely the uncountability of the reals, the Jordan decomposition theorem, the Baire category theorem, and Tao's pigeon hole principle for the Lebesgue measure. We discuss a connection to hyperarithmetical analysis, completing the picture.

Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Finally, a new method to prove equivalent relations in a Boolean algebra is also given.

Towards an Independent Version of Tarski's System of Geometry

Abstract:In 1926-1927, Tarski designed a set of axioms for Euclidean geometry which reached its final form in a manuscript by Schwabhäuser, Szmielew and Tarski in 1983. The differences amount to simplifications obtained by Tarski and Gupta. Gupta presented an independent version of Tarski's system of geometry, thus establishing that his version could not be further simplified without modifying the axioms. To obtain the independence of one of his axioms, namely Pasch's axiom, he proved the independence of one of its consequences: the previously eliminated symmetry of betweenness. However, an independence model for the non-degenerate part of Pasch's axiom was provided by Szczerba for another version of Tarski's system of geometry in which the symmetry of betweenness holds. This independence proof cannot be directly used for Gupta's version as the statements of the parallel postulate differ.

Remarks on some Limit Geometric Properties related to an Idempotent and Non-Associative Algebraic Structure

Abstract:This paper analyses the geometric properties of an idempotent and non-associative algebraic structure which extends the Max-Times semi-ring. This algebraic structure is useful for analyzing systems of Max-Times and Max-Plus equations (using an appropriate notion of non-associative determinant). We consider a related ultrametric distance and show that it implies, among other things, an analogue of the Pythagorean relation. To that end, we propose a suitable notion of right angle between two vectors and analyse a trigonometric like concept related to the Tshebishev unit ball. Along this line, we study the possible implications of these properties for the complex plane.

What principles does one need to add to the laws of Boolean algebra to reason not only about intersection, union, and complementation of sets, but also about the relative size of sets? Quadruple Inequalities: Between Cauchy-Schwarz and Triangle

Abstract:We prove a set of inequalities that interpolate the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and the triangle inequality. Every nondecreasing, convex function with a concave derivative induces such an inequality. They hold in any metric space that satisfies a metric version of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, including all CAT(0) spaces and, in particular, all Euclidean spaces. Because these inequalities establish relations between the six distances of four points, we call them quadruple inequalities. In this context, we introduce the quadruple constant - a real number that quantifies the distortion of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality by a given function. Additionally, for inner product spaces, we prove an alternative, more symmetric version of the quadruple inequalities, which generalizes the parallelogram law.

Abstract:Although the categorical arithmetic is not effectively axiomatizable, the belief that the incompleteness Theorems can be apply to it is fairly common. Furthermore, the so-called "essential" (or "inherent") semantic incompleteness of the second-order Logic that can be deduced by these same Theorems does not imply the standard semantic incompleteness that can be derived using the Loewenheim-Skolem or the compactness Theorem. This state of affairs has its origins in an incorrect and misinterpreted Goedel's comment at the Koenigsberg congress of 1930 and has consolidated due to different circumstances. This paper aims to clear up these questions and proposes an alternative interpretation for the Goedel's statement.

Abstract:Masures are generalizations of Bruhat-Tits buildings. They were introduced by Gaussent and Rousseau in order to study Kac-Moody groups over valued fields. We prove that the intersection of two apartments of a masure is convex. Using this, we simplify the axiomatic definition of masures given by Rousseau.
