Abstract:Masures are generalizations of Bruhat-Tits buildings. They were introduced by Gaussent and Rousseau in order to study Kac-Moody groups over valued fields. We prove that the intersection of two apartments of a masure is convex. Using this, we simplify the axiomatic definition of masures given by Rousseau.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:This contribution reports on the continued formalisation of an axiomatic system for Minkowski spacetime (as used in the study of Special Relativity) which is closer in spirit to Hilbert's axiomatic approach to Euclidean geometry than to the vector space approach employed by Minkowski. We present a brief overview of the axioms as well as of a formalisation of theorems relating to linear order. Proofs and excerpts of Isabelle/Isar scripts are discussed, with a focus on the use of symmetry and reasoning "without loss of generality".

Semialgebraic groups and generalized affine buildings

Abstract:We develop the theory of algebraic groups over real closed fields and apply the results to construct a geometric object $\mathcal{B}$ and to prove that $\mathcal{B}$ is an affine $\Lambda$-building. We use a model theoretic transfer principle to prove generalizations of statements about semisimple Lie groups. In this direction we give proofs for the Iwasawa-decomposition $KAU$, the Cartan-decomposition $KAK$ and the Bruhat-decomposition $BWB$. For unipotent subgroups we prove the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula and use it to analyse root groups. We give a proof of the Jacobson-Morozov Lemma about subgroups whose Lie algebra is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and we describe other rank 1 subgroups which are the semisimple parts of Levi-subgroups. We prove a semialgebraic version of Kostant's convexity. Over the reals, semisimple Lie groups are closely related to the symmetry groups of symmetric spaces of non-compact type. These symmetric spaces can be described semialgebraically, which allows us to consider their semialgebraic extension over any real closed field. Starting from these non-standard symmetric spaces we use a valuation (with image some non-discrete ordered abelian group $\Lambda$) on the fields to define a $\Lambda$-pseudometric. Identifying points of distance zero results in a $\Lambda$-metric space $\mathcal{B}$. Assuming that the root system of the associated Lie group is reduced, we prove that $\mathcal{B}$ is an affine $\Lambda$-building. The proof relies on a thorough analysis of stabilizers.

Abstract:Two generalizations of the Minkowski ?(x) function are given. As ?(x) maps quadratic irrationals to rational numbers, it is shown that both generalizations send natural classes of pairs of cubic irrational numbers in the same cubic number field to pairs of rational numbers. It is also shown that these functions satisfy an analog to the fact that ?(x), while continuous and increasing, has derivative zero almost everywhere. Both extend earlier work of Beaver-Garrity on the Farey-Bary map.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem for mixed Monge-Ampère measures of convex functions, we address a special case of a conjecture of Schneider and show that for every convex body $K$ the support of the mixed area measure $S(K[j],B_L^{n-1}[n-1-j],\cdot)$ is given by the set of $(K[j],B_L^{n-1}[n-1-j])$-extreme unit normal vectors, where $B_L^{n-1}$ denotes the $(n-1)$-dimensional Euclidean unit ball in a hyperplane $L$. As a consequence, we see that the supports of these measures are nested. Our proof introduces a Kubota-type formula for mixed area measures, which involves integration over $j$-dimensional linear subspaces that contain a fixed $1$-dimensional subspace. We transfer these results to the analytic setting, where we obtain corresponding statements for (conjugate) mixed Monge-Ampère measures of convex functions. Thereby, we establish a fundamental property for functional intrinsic volumes. In addition, we study connections between mixed Monge-Ampère measures of convex functions and mixed area measures and mixed volumes of convex bodies.

Axiomatics for the external numbers of nonstandard analysis

Abstract:Neutrices are additive subgroups of a nonstandard model of the real numbers. An external number is the algebraic sum of a nonstandard real number and a neutrix. Due to the stability by some shifts, external numbers may be seen as mathematical models for orders of magnitude. The algebraic properties of external numbers gave rise to the so-called solids, which are extensions of ordered fields, having a restricted distributivity law. However, necessary and sufficient conditions can be given for distributivity to hold. In this article we develop an axiomatics for the external numbers. The axioms are similar to, but mostly somewhat weaker than the axioms for the real numbers and deal with algebraic rules, Dedekind completeness and the Archimedean property. A structure satisfying these axioms is called a complete arithmetical solid. We show that the external numbers form a complete arithmetical solid, implying the consistency of the axioms presented. We also show that the set of precise elements (elements with minimal magnitude) has a built-in nonstandard model of the rationals. Indeed the set of precise elements is situated between the nonstandard rationals and the nonstandard reals whereas the set of non-precise numbers is completely determined.

Abstract:We prove that for all integers $2\leq m\leq d-1$, there exists doubling measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with full support that are $m$-rectifiable and purely $(m-1)$-unrectifiable in the sense of Federer (i.e. without assuming $\mu\ll\mathcal{H}^m$). The corresponding result for 1-rectifiable measures is originally due to Garnett, Killip, and Schul (2010). Our construction of higher-dimensional Lipschitz images is informed by a simple observation about square packing in the plane: $N$ axis-parallel squares of side length $s$ pack inside of a square of side length $\lceil N^{1/2}\rceil s$. The approach is robust and when combined with standard metric geometry techniques allows for constructions in complete Ahlfors regular metric spaces. One consequence of the main theorem is that for each $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and $s<m$, there exist doubling measures $\mu$ on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ and Lipschitz maps $f:E\subset\mathbb{R}^m\rightarrow\mathbb{H}^1$ such that $\mu\ll\mathcal{H}^{s-\epsilon}$ for all $\epsilon>0$, $f(E)$ has Hausdorff dimension $s$, and $\mu(f(E))>0$. This is striking, because $\mathcal{H}^m(f(E))=0$ for every Lipschitz map $f:E\subset\mathbb{R}^m\rightarrow\mathbb{H}^1$ by a theorem of Ambrosio and Kirchheim (2000). Another application of the square packing construction is that every compact metric space $\mathbb{X}$ of Assouad dimension strictly less than $m$ is a Lipschitz image of a compact set $E\subset[0,1]^m$. Of independent interest, we record the existence of doubling measures on complete Ahlfors regular metric spaces with prescribed lower and upper Hausdorff and packing dimensions.

Measures and Charges on the Places of $\bar{\mathbb Q}$

Abstract:Recent work of the author established dual representation theorems for certain vector spaces that arise in an important article of Allcock and Vaaler. These results constructed an object called a consistent map which acts like a measure on the set of places of $\bar{\mathbb Q}$, but is not a Borel measure on this space. We describe the appropriate ring of sets $\mathcal R$ for which every consistent map arises from a measure on $\mathcal R$. We further obtain the conditions under which a consistent map may be extended to a measure on the smallest algebra containing $\mathcal R$.

Abstract:String and M theories seem to require generalizations of usual notions of differential geometry on smooth manifolds. Such generalizations usually involve extending the tangent bundle to larger vector bundles equipped with various algebroid structures such as Courant algebroids, higher Courant algebroids, metric algebroids, or G -algebroids. The most general geometric scheme is not well understood yet, and a unifying framework for such algebroid structures is needed. Our aim in this paper is to propose such a general framework. Our strategy is to follow the hierarchy of defining axioms for a Courant algebroid: almost-Courant - metric - pre-Courant - Courant. In particular, we focus on the symmetric part of the bracket and the metric invariance property, and try to make sense of them in a manner as general as possible. These ideas lead us to define new algebroid structures which we dub Bourbaki and metric-Bourbaki algebroids, together with their almost- and pre-versions. For a special case of metric-Bourbaki algebroids that we call exact, we construct a collection of maps which generalize the Cartan calculus of exterior derivative, Lie derivative and interior product. This is done by a kind of reverse-mathematical analysis of the Ševera classification of exact Courant algebroids. By abstracting crucial properties of this collection of maps, we define the notion of Bourbaki calculus. Conversely, given an arbitrary Bourbaki calculus, we construct a metric-Bourbaki algebroid by building up a standard bracket that is analogous to the Dorfman bracket. Moreover, we prove that any exact metric-Bourbaki algebroid satisfying some further conditions has to have a bracket that is the twisted version of the standard bracket; a partly analogous result to Ševera classification. We prove that many physically and mathematically motivated algebroids from the literature are examples of these new algebroids, and when possible we construct a Bourbaki calculus on them. In particular, we show that the Cartan calculus can be seen as the Bourbaki calculus corresponding to an exact higher Courant algebroid. We also point out examples of Bourbaki calculi including the generalization of the Cartan calculus on vector bundle valued forms. One straightforward generalization of our constructions might be done by replacing the tangent bundle with an arbitrary Lie algebroid A . This step allows us to define an extension of our results, A -version, and extend our main results for them while proving many other algebroids from the literature fit into this framework.

Barr-coexactness for metric compact Hausdorff spaces

Abstract:Compact metric spaces form an important class of metric spaces, but the category that they define lacks many important properties such as completeness and cocompleteness. In recent studies of "metric domain theory" and Stone-type dualities, the more general notion of a (separated) metric compact Hausdorff space emerged as a metric counterpart of Nachbin's compact ordered spaces. Roughly speaking, a metric compact Hausdorff space is a metric space equipped with a \emph{compatible} compact Hausdorff topology (which does not need to be the induced topology). These spaces maintain many important features of compact metric spaces, and, notably, the resulting category is much better behaved. Moreover, one can use inspiration from the theory of Nachbin's compact ordered spaces to solve problems for metric structures. In this paper we continue this line of research: in the category of separated metric compact Hausdorff spaces we characterise the regular monomorphisms as the embeddings and the epimorphisms as the surjective morphisms. Moreover, we show that epimorphisms out of an object $X$ can be encoded internally on $X$ by their kernel metrics, which are characterised as the continuous metrics below the metric on $X$; this gives a convenient way to represent quotient objects. Finally, as the main result, we prove that its dual category has an algebraic flavour: it is Barr-exact. While we show that it cannot be a variety of finitary algebras, it remains open whether it is an infinitary variety.

Formalising Real Numbers in Homotopy Type Theory

Abstract:Cauchy reals can be defined as a quotient of Cauchy sequences of rationals. The limit of a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy reals is defined through lifting it to a sequence of Cauchy sequences of rationals. This lifting requires the axiom of countable choice or excluded middle, neither of which is available in homotopy type theory. To address this, the Univalent Foundations Program uses a higher inductive-inductive type to define the Cauchy reals as the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by the rationals. We generalize this construction to define the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by an arbitrary metric space. This forms a monad in the category of metric spaces with Lipschitz functions. When applied to the rationals it defines the Cauchy reals. Finally, we can use Altenkirch and Danielson (2016)'s partiality monad to define a semi-decision procedure comparing a real number and a rational number. The entire construction has been formalized in the Coq proof assistant. On affine Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials for Kac-Moody groups

Abstract:In 2019, D. Muthiah proposed a strategy to define affine Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomials for Kac-Moody groups. Since then, Bardy-Panse, the first author and Rousseau have introduced the formalism of twin masures and the authors have extended combinatorial results from affine root systems to general Kac-Moody root systems in a previous article. In this paper, we use these results to explicitly define affine $R$-Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for Kac-Moody groups. The construction is based on a path model lifting to twin masures. Conjecturally, these polynomials count the cardinality of intersections of opposite affine Schubert cells, as in the case of reductive groups.

Abstract:We show that the collection of regular Borel measures on a second-countable locally compact Hausdorff space has the structure of a sheaf. With this we give an alternate description of the pullback of a regular Borel measure along a local homeomorphism. We are able to use these tools to give a description of the KMS-weights for the gauge-action on the graph C*-algebra of a second-countable topological graph in terms of sub-invariant measures on the vertex space of said topological graph.

Abstract:We show that the generic automorphism is axiomatizable in the green field of Poizat (once Morleyized) as well as in the bad fields that are obtained by collapsing this green field to finite Morley rank. As a corollary, we obtain ‘bad pseudofinite fields’ in characteristic 0. In both cases, we give geometric axioms. In fact, a general framework is presented allowing this kind of axiomatization. We deduce from various constructibility results for algebraic varieties in characteristic 0 that the green and bad fields fall into this framework. Finally, we give similar results for other theories obtained by Hrushovski amalgamation, for example, the free fusion of two strongly minimal theories having the definable multiplicity property. We also close a gap in the construction of the bad field, showing that the codes may be chosen to be families of strongly minimal sets.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a new axiomatization of planar geometry by reinterpreting the original axioms of Euclid. The basic concept is still that of a line segment but its equivalent notion of betweenness is viewed as a topological, not a metric concept. That leads quickly to the notion of connectedness without any need to dwell on the definition of topology. In our approach line segments must be connected. Lines and planes are unified via the concept of separation: lines are separated into two components by each point, planes contain lines that separate them into two components as well. We add a subgroup of bijections preserving line segments and establishing unique isomorphism of basic geometrical sets, and the axiomatic structure is complete. Of fundamental importance is the Fixed Point Theorem that allows for creation of the concepts of length and congruency of line segments. The resulting structure is much more in sync with modern science than other axiomatic approaches to planar geometry. For instance, it leads naturally to the Erlangen Program in geometry. Our Conditions of Homogeneity and Rigidity have two interpretations. In physics, they correspond to the basic tenet that independent observers should arrive at the same measurement and are related to boosts in special relativity. In geometry, they mean uniqueness of congruence for certain geometrical figures. Another thread of the paper is the introduction of boundary at infinity, an important concept of modern mathematics, and linking of Pasch Axiom to endowing boundaries at infinity with a natural relation of betweenness. That way spherical geometry can be viewed as geometry of boundaries at infinity.

Abstract:Around the early 2000-s, Bourgain, Katz and Tao introduced an arithmetic approach to study Kakeya-type problems. They showed that the Euclidean Kakeya conjecture follows from a natural problem in additive combinatorics, now referred to as the `Arithmetic Kakeya Conjecture'. We consider a higher dimensional variant of this problem and prove an upper bound using a certain iterative argument. The main new ingredient in our proof is a general way to strengthen the sum-difference inequalities of Katz and Tao which might be of independent interest. As a corollary, we obtain a new lower bound for the Minkowski dimension of $(n, d)$-Besicovitch sets.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

Abstract:We provide proofs of two theorems stated by Massey in 1961, concerning the obstructions to finding complex structures on real vector bundles. In addition, we determine the second obstruction to a complex structure on a rank six orientable real vector bundle. The obstructions are fractional parts of integral Stiefel-Whitney classes, and a fourth of an appropriate combination of Pontryagin, Chern, and Euler classes.

Abstract:We revisit the topic of probability measures on CAT(0) cube complexes and prove that an amenable group acting on a CAT(0) cube complex, regardless of dimension, necessarily preserves an interval in the Roller compactification. In the finite dimensional case, we prove that there must be an orbit of cardinality $2^N$, where $N$ is bounded by the dimension. This is a slight extension of the author's previous Tits' Alternative.
