Abstract:Determining the topology of an algebraic surface is not only an interesting mathematical problem, but also a key issue in computer graphics and CAGD. An algorithm is proposed to determine the intrinsic topology of an implicit real algebraic surface f(x,y,z) = 0 in R3, where f(x,y,z) ∈ Q[x,y,z] and Q is the field of rational numbers. There exist algorithms to determine the topology for algebraic surfaces of special type [2, 3, 4, 7]. The CAD method proposed by Collins [1] can divide the space into cylindrical parts. But it does not give the connection information neither the intrinsic representation.

Abstract:We study Riemannian 8-manifolds with an infinitesimal action of SO(3) under which each tangent space breaks into irreducible spaces of dimensions 3 and 5. The relationship with quaternionic, almost product- and PSU-geometry is thoroughly explained using representation-theoretical arguments. This leads to the precise study of the intrinsic invariants upon which the structure depends, and also to the description of topological constraints for the existence of such manifolds. Finally, many examples are provided together with general recipes to build them.

Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract:We propose a notion of a ternary skew-symmetric covariant tensor of 3rd order, consider it as a 3-dimensional matrix and study a ten-dimensional complex space of these tensors. We split this space into a direct sum of two five-dimensional subspaces and in each subspace there is an irreducible representation of the rotation group SO(3) -> SO(5). We find two independent SO(3)-invariants of ternary skew-symmetric tensors, where one of them is the Hermitian metric and the other is the quadratic form. We find the stabilizer of this quadratic form and its invariant properties. Making use of these invariant properties we define a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold. We study a connection on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold with a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure, find its curvature and torsion. The structures proposed in this paper and their study are motivated by a ternary generalization of the Pauli's principle proposed by R. Kerner.

They naturally come up in the Kronheimer–Mrowka SO(3) gauge theory for 3-orbifolds and, in the oriented case, in a categorification of the Kuperberg bracket quantum invariant. The present paper studies the more technically complicated case of SL(4) foams. Combinatorial evaluation of unoriented SL(4) foams is defined and state spaces for it are studied. In particular, over a suitably localized ground ring, the state space of any web is free of the rank given by the number of its 4-colorings.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to some selected topics of the theory of special orthogonal group SO(3). First, we discuss the trace of orthogonal matrices and its relation to the characteristic polynomial; on this basis, the partition of SO(3) formed by conjugation classes is described by trace mapping. Second, we show that every special orthogonal matrix can be expressed as the product of three elementary special orthogonal matrices. Explicit formulas for the decomposition as needed for applications in differential geometry and physics as symmetry transformations are given.

Three-Dimensional Small Covers and Links

Abstract:We study certain orientation-preserving involutions on three-dimensional small covers. We prove that the quotient space of an orientable three-dimensional small cover by such an involution belonging to the 2-torus is homeomorphic to a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$. If this quotient space is a 3-sphere, then the corresponding small cover is a two-fold branched covering of the 3-sphere along a link. We provide a description of this link in terms of the polytope and the characteristic function.

Abstract:We create Resthetikhin-Turaev topological invariants of closed orientable three-manifolds from the quantum supergroup U_q(osp(1|2n)) at certain even roots of unity. To construct the invariants we develop tensor product theorems for finite dimensional modules of U_q(osp(1|2n)) at roots of unity.

Abstract:We explore a variety of composite topological structures that arise from the spontaneous breaking of $SO(10)$ to $SU(3)_c \times U(1)_{em}$ via one of its maximal subgroups $SU(5) \times U(1)_\chi$, $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$, and $SU(5) \times U(1)_X$ (also known as flipped $SU(5)$). They include i) a network of $\mathbb{Z}$ strings which develop monopoles and turn into necklaces with the structure of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ strings, ii) dumbbells connecting two different types of monopoles, or monopoles and antimonpoles, iii) starfish-like configurations, iv) polypole configurations, and v) walls bounded by a necklace. We display these structures both before and after the electroweak breaking. The appearance of these composite structures in the early universe and their astrophysical implications including gravitational wave emission would depend on the symmetry breaking patterns and scales, and the nature of the associated phase transitions.

How to Depict 5-Dimensional Manifolds

Abstract:We usually think of 2-dimensional manifolds as surfaces embedded in Euclidean 3-space. Since humans cannot visualise Euclidean spaces of higher dimensions, it appears to be impossible to give pictorial representations of higher-dimensional manifolds. However, one can in fact encode the topology of a surface in a 1-dimensional picture. By analogy, one can draw 2-dimensional pictures of 3-manifolds (Heegaard diagrams), and 3-dimensional pictures of 4-manifolds (Kirby diagrams). With the help of open books one can likewise represent at least some 5-manifolds by 3-dimensional diagrams, and contact geometry can be used to reduce these to drawings in the 2-plane.In this paper, I shall explain how to draw such pictures and how to use them for answering topological and geometric questions. The work on 5-manifolds is joint with Fan Ding and Otto van Koert.

Abstract:We prove the 2-torus $\mathbb T$, an abelian linear algebraic group, occurs as a compactification of the moduli space of labeled, oriented, similarity classes of triangles. A (possibly degenerate) triangle is {\it inscribable} if it can be inscribed in a circle. We show $\mathbb T$ is a fine moduli space of labeled, oriented, possibly-degenerate inscribable classes, and that the (moduli) stack of (unlabeled, unoriented) possibly-degenerate inscribable classes is the quotient $[\mathbb T/D_6]$. To illustrate how aptly $\mathbb T$ describes triangle classes we show the main triangle types form distinguished algebraic structures: subgroups, cosets, and elements of small order, and use the natural metric on $\mathbb T$ to compare them.

Abstract:We classify all three-dimensional connected topological loops such that the group topologically generated by their left translations is the four-dimensional connected Lie group $G$ which has trivial center and precisely two one-dimensional normal subgroups. Abstract:This article introduces yet another representation of rotations in 3-space. The rotations form a 3-dimensional projective space, which fact has not been exploited in Computer Science. We use the four affine patches of this projective space to parametrize the rotations. This affine patch representation is more compact than quaternions (which require 4 components for calculations), encompasses the entire rotation group without singularities (unlike the Euler angles and rotation vector approaches), and requires only ratios of linear or quadratic polynomials for basic computations (unlike the Euler angles and rotation vector approaches which require transcendental functions). As an example, we derive the differential equation for the integration of angular velocity using this affine patch representation of rotations. We remark that the complexity of this equation is the same as the corresponding quaternion equation, but has advantages over the quaternion approach e.g. renormalization to unit length is not required, and state space has no dead directions.

Abstract:A correspondence, by way of Heegaard splittings, between closed oriented 3-manifolds and pairs of surjections from a surface group to a free group has been studied by Stallings, Jaco, and Hempel. This correspondence, by way of trisections, was recently extended by Abrams, Gay, and Kirby to the case of smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. We unify these perspectives and generalize this correspondence to the case of links in closed oriented 3-manifolds and links of knotted surfaces in smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. The algebraic manifestations of these four subfields of low-dimensional topology (3-manifolds, 4-manifolds, knot theory, and knotted surface theory) are all strikingly similar, and this correspondence perhaps elucidates some unique character of low-dimensional topology.

Abstract:In [2], it is observed that if in the twistor space associated with an oriented vector bundle of rank $4$ over $T^2$ with a positive-definite metric and a metric connection, the horizontality has infinite complexity derived from one of the cases studied in [1], then the complexity is expressed by a dense subset of $S^2$. In the present paper, it is observed that in such a situation, the topological holonomy group is dense in $SO(3)$.
