Abstract:Abstract We discuss the classification of rank 3 lattices preserved by finite orthogonal groups and derive from it the classification of regular polyhedra in the 3-dimensional torus. This classification is closely related to the classification of regular polyhedra in 3-space.

Abstract:$\SLR$ geometry is one of the eight 3-dimensional Thurston geometries, it can be derived from the 3-dimensional Lie group of all $2\times 2$ real matrices with determinant one. Our aim is to describe and visualize the {\it regular infinite (torus-like) or bounded} $p$-gonal prism tilings in $\SLR$ space. For this purpose we introduce the notion of the infinite and bounded prisms, prove that there exist infinite many regular infinite $p$-gonal face-to-face prism tilings $\cT^i_p(q)$ and infinitely many regular (bounded) $p$-gonal non-face-to-face $\SLR$ prism tilings $\cT_p(q)$ for parameters $p \ge 3$ where $ \frac{2p}{p-2} < q \in \mathbb{N}$. Moreover, we develope a method to determine the data of the space filling regular infinite and bounded prism tilings. We apply the above procedure to $\cT^i_3(q)$ and $\cT_3(q)$ where $6< q \in \mathbb{N}$ and visualize them and the corresponding tilings. E. Molnár showed, that the homogeneous 3-spaces have a unified interpretation in the projective 3-space $\mathcal{P}^3(\bV^4,\BV_4, \mathbf{R})$. In our work we will use this projective model of $\SLR$ geometry and in this manner the prisms and prism tilings can be visualized on the Euclidean screen of computer.

Chiral extensions of regular toroids

Abstract:Abstract polytopes are combinatorial objects that generalise geometric objects such as convex polytopes, maps on surfaces and tilings of the space. Chiral polytopes are those abstract polytopes that admit full combinatorial rotational symmetry but do not admit reflections. In this paper we build chiral polytopes whose facets (maximal faces) are isomorphic to a prescribed regular cubic tessellation of the $n$-dimensional torus ($n \geq 2$). As a consequence, we prove that for every $d \geq 3$ there exist infinitely many chiral $d$-polytopes.

Abstract:We prove the 2-torus $\mathbb T$, an abelian linear algebraic group, occurs as a compactification of the moduli space of labeled, oriented, similarity classes of triangles. A (possibly degenerate) triangle is {\it inscribable} if it can be inscribed in a circle. We show $\mathbb T$ is a fine moduli space of labeled, oriented, possibly-degenerate inscribable classes, and that the (moduli) stack of (unlabeled, unoriented) possibly-degenerate inscribable classes is the quotient $[\mathbb T/D_6]$. To illustrate how aptly $\mathbb T$ describes triangle classes we show the main triangle types form distinguished algebraic structures: subgroups, cosets, and elements of small order, and use the natural metric on $\mathbb T$ to compare them.

Classification of Lattices Bounded by Large Surgeries of Knots

Abstract:We classify all the lattices realized as the intersection form of a positive definite four manifold with boundary $S_n^3(K)$ for a knot $K$ in the three sphere and a positive integer $n$ greater than $4g_4(K)+3$. We then use this result to define a concordance invariant and generalize a theorem of Rasmussen on lens space surgeries.

Abstract:Convex hexagons that can tile the plane have been classified into three types. For the generic cases (not necessarily convex) of the three types and two other special cases, we classify tilings of the plane under the assumption that all vertices have degree $3$. Then we use the classification to describe the corresponding hexagonal tilings of flat tori and their moduli spaces.

Abstract:We provide a fine classification of rigid three-dimensional torus quotients with isolated canonical singularities, up to biholomorphism and diffeomorphism. This complements the classification of Calabi-Yau 3-folds of type $\rm{III}_0$, which are those quotients with Gorenstein singularities.

A geometric classification of rod complements in the 3-torus

Abstract:Rod packings are used in crystallography to describe crystal structures with linear or zigzag chains of particles, and each rod packing can be topologically viewed as a collection of disjoint geodesics in the 3-torus. Hui and Purcell developed a method to study the complements of rods in the 3-torus with the use of 3-dimensional geometry and tools from the 3-sphere, and they partially classified the geometry of some families of rod complements in the 3-torus. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of the geometry of all rod complements in the 3-torus using topological arguments.

A Universal Triangulation for Flat Tori

Abstract:A result due to Burago and Zalgaller (1960, 1995) states that every orientable polyhedral surface, one that is obtained by gluing Euclidean polygons, has an isometric piecewise linear (PL) embedding into Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^3$. A flat torus, resulting from the identification of the opposite sides of a Euclidean parallelogram, is a simple example of polyhedral surface. In a first part, we adapt the proof of Burago and Zalgaller, which is partially non-constructive, to produce PL isometric embeddings of flat tori. Our implementation produces embeddings with a huge number of vertices, moreover distinct for every flat torus. In a second part, based on another construction of Zalgaller (2000) and on recent works by Arnoux et al. (2021), we exhibit a universal triangulation with 2434 triangles which can be embedded linearly on each triangle in order to realize the metric of any flat torus.

Abstract:The Clifford 2-torus in and the equlaterial 2-torus in are known as the only minimal immersions of 2-tori into spheres by the first eigenfunctions (called -minimal for short). For , the Clifford n -torus in might be the only known example of -minimal n -tori in the literature. By discussing the general construction of homogeneous minimal flat n -tori in spheres, we construct several new examples of -minimal flat 3-tori and 4-tori. In particular, the existence of 2-parameter family of non-congruent -minimal flat 4-tori is shown for the first time. We obtain the complete classification for -minimal immersions of conformally flat 3-tori and 4-tori in spheres, by some detailed investigations of shortest vectors in lattices, which could be of independent interests. Using them, we also solve the Berger's problem (finding the maximal value of the dilation-invariant functional ) among all flat 3-tori and 4-tori.

Abstract:In this article we establish the relation between the spines of 3-manifolds and the polyhedra with identified faces. We do this by showing that the spines of the closed, connected, orientable 3-manifolds can be presented through polyhedra with identified faces in a very natural way. We also prove the equivalence between the special spines and a certain type of polyhedra, and other related results.
Graphs for torus actions on oriented manifolds with isolated fixed points and classification in dimension 6

Abstract:Let a torus act on a compact oriented manifold $M$ with isolated fixed points, with an additional mild assumption that its isotropy submanifolds are orientable. We associate a signed labeled multigraph encoding the fixed point data (weights and signs at fixed points and isotropy submanifolds) of the manifold. We study operations on $M$ and its multigraph, (self) connected sum and blow up, etc. When the circle group acts on a 6-dimensional $M$, we classify such a multigraph by proving that we can convert it into the empty graph by successively applying two types of operations. In particular, this classifies the fixed point data of any such manifold. We prove this by showing that for any such manifold, we can successively take equivariant connected sums at fixed points with itself, $\mathbb{CP}^3$, and 6-dimensional analogue $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ of the Hirzebruch surfaces (and these with opposite orientations) to a fixed point free action on a compact oriented 6-manifold. We also classify a multigraph for a torus action on a 4-dimensional $M$.

Abstract:By correcting an example by Polyanskii, we show that there exist reduced polytopes in three-dimensional Euclidean space. This partially answers the question posed by Lassak on the existence of reduced polytopes in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for $d\geq 3$.

Homology of torus spaces with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space

Abstract:Let $X$ be 2n-dimensional compact manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus. The orbit space $X/T$ is a manifold with corners. Suppose that all proper faces of $X/T$ are acyclic. In the paper we study the homological spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}\Rightarrow H_*(X)$ corresponding to the filtration of $X$ by orbit types. When the free part of the action is not twisted, we describe the whole spectral sequence in terms of homology and combinatorial structure of $X/T$. In this case we describe the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map $k[X/T]/(l.s.o.p.) \to H_*(X)$, where $k[X/T]$ is a face ring of $X/T$ and $(l.s.o.p.)$ is the ideal generated by a linear system of parameters (this ideal appears as the image of $H^{>0}(BT)$ in equivariant cohomology. There exists a natural double grading on $H_*(X)$, which satisfies bigraded Poincare duality. This general theory is applied to compute homology groups of origami toric manifolds with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space. A number of natural generalizations is considered. These include Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. h'- and h''-numbers of simplicial posets appear as the ranks of certain terms in the spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}$. In particular, using topological argument we show that Buchsbaum posets have nonnegative h''-vectors. The proofs of this paper rely on the theory of cellular sheaves. We associate to a torus space certain sheaves and cosheaves on the underlying simplicial poset, and observe an interesting duality between these objects. This duality seems to be a version of Poincare-Verdier duality between cellular sheaves and cosheaves.

The most symmetric surfaces in the 3-torus

Abstract:Suppose an orientation preserving action of a finite group $G$ on the closed surface $Sigma_g$ of genus $gu003e1$ extends over the 3-torus $T^3$ for some embedding $Sigma_gsubset T^3$. Then $|G|le 12(g-1)$, and this upper bound $12(g-1)$ can be achieved for $g=n^2+1, 3n^2+1, 2n^3+1, 4n^3+1, 8n^3+1, nin mathbb{Z}_+$. Those surfaces in $T^3$ realizing the maximum symmetries can be either unknotted or knotted. Similar problems in non-orientable category is also discussed. Connection with minimal surfaces in $T^3$ is addressed and when the maximum symmetric surfaces above can be realized by minimal surfaces is identified.

Abstract:A regular map is an abstract generalization of a Platonic solid. It describes a group, a topological cell decomposition of a 2-manifold of type {p, q} with only p-gons, such that q of them meet at each vertex in a circular manner, and we have maximal combinatorial symmetry, expressed by the flag transitivity of the symmetry group. On the one hand, we have articles on topological surface embeddings of regular maps by F. Razafindrazaka and K. Polthier, C. Séquin, and J. J. van Wijk.On the other hand, we have articles with polyhedral embeddings of regular maps by J. Bokowski and M. Cuntz, A. Boole Stott, U. Brehm, H. S. M. Coxeter, B. Grünbaum, E. Schulte, and J. M. Wills. The main concern of this partial survey article is to emphasize that all these articles should be seen as contributing to the common body of knowledge in the area of regular map embeddings. This article additionally provides a method for finding symmetrical equivelar polyhedral embeddings of type {3, 7} based on symmetrical graph embeddings on convex surfaces.

Abstract:Our main goal is to determine, under certain restrictions, the maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups containing a regular torus. We call a torus regular if its centralizer is abelian. We also obtain some results of independent interest. In particular, we determine the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups whose non-zero weights occur with multiplicity 1.

Moduli spaces of Delzant polytopes and symplectic toric manifolds

Abstract:We prove a number of geometric and topological properties of the moduli space $\mathcal{D}(n)$ of $n$-dimensional Delzant polytopes for any $n \geq 2$. Using the Delzant correspondence this allows us to answer several questions, posed in the past decade by a number of authors, concerning the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension $2n$. Two highlights of the paper are the construction of examples showing that, in contrast with the work of Oda in dimension $4$, no classification of minimal models of symplectic toric manifolds should be expected in higher dimension, and a proof that the space of $n$-dimensional Delzant polytopes is path-connected, which was previously shown for $n=2$ by the first author, Pires, Ratiu and Sabatini in 2014, who made use of the classification of minimal models in this case. Our proof of path connectedness for $n\geq2$ is algorithmic and based on the fact that every rational fan can be refined to a unimodular fan, a standard result used for resolution of singularities in toric varieties.

Abstract:In 1980, V. I. Arnold studied the classification problem for convex lattice polygons of given area. Since then this problem and its analogues have been studied by several authors, upper bounds for the numbers of non-equivalent d-dimensional convex lattice polytopes of given volume or fixed number of lattice points have been achieved. In this paper, by introducing and studying the unimodular groups acting on convex lattice polytopes, we obtain a lower bound for the number of non-equivalent d-dimensional centrally symmetric convex lattice polytopes of given number of lattice points, which is essentially tight.
