Abstract:In this article, we study the problems found in the Susa Mathematical Texts No.\,24 and No.\,25 (\textbf{SMT No.\,24} and \textbf{SMT No.\,25}) which concern excavation projects such as canals and holes. We also examine certain Elamite structures, such as the canal systems serving Susa and a reservoir at the ziggurat of Chogha Zanbil, in whose construction geometry might well have played an important role.

Abstract:The bisection of trapezoids by transversal lines has many examples in Babylonian mathematics. In this article, we study a similar problem in Elamite mathematics, inscribed on a clay tablet held in the collection of the Louvre Museum and thought to date from between 1894--1595 BC. We seek to demonstrate that this problem is different from typical Babylonian problems about bisecting trapezoids by transversal lines. We also identify some of the possible mathematical ideas underlying this problem and the innovative approach that might have motivated its design.

Abstract:In an extensive paper published due to the kindness of the editorial staff of the present journal, I have suggested a geometrical reinterpretation of so-called Old Babylonian "algebra".1 Among the texts analyzed in the paper were the mathematical texts No. XVI and No. IX from Susa, which turned out to contain highly illuminating didactical commentaries of a kind not known from the Babylonian core area be it because teaching in a peripheral area felt a need to make explicit what could be left to a stable oral tradition in the core, or simply because the Susa teachers had a bent for loquacity. Text No. XVI turned out not to contain solutions of problems but only a didactical discussion of transformations of linear "equations" of two unknowns (as usually, the us ("length") and ("width") of a rectangle, with the usual values 30' and 20' [nindan]2 ) . No. IX contained initial didactical discussions of the transformations of complex into simpler second-degree "equations" followed by use of the technique just taught for the solution of a sophisticated set of equations. These texts are not the only Susa texts to contain illuminating didactical commentaries. In the present paper I shall analyze two further texts, of which one contains an explicit explanatory part, while the other employs some of the concepts introduced in the former. Abstract:The so-called polynomial equations play an important role both in algebra and in the theory of functional equations. If the unknown functions in the equation are additive, relatively many results are known. However, even in this case, there are a lot of open questions. In some specific cases, according to classical results, the unknown additive functions are homomorphisms, derivations, or linear combinations of these. The question arises as to whether the solutions can be described even if the unknown functions are not assumed to be additive but to be generalized monomials. As a starting point, we will deal with quadratic functions in this paper. We aim to show that quadratic functions that are solutions to certain polynomial equations necessarily have a `special' form. Further, we also present a method to determine these special forms.

Abstract:Consider a pair of right triangles with an equal hypotenuse. This turns out to solve the diophantine system of equations a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 = e 2 in integers. To this system we associate a family of elliptic curves with defining equation y 2 = ( x − a 2 )( x − b 2 )( x − c 2 )+ a 2 b 2 c 2 . We show that there exists a subfamily of rank ≥ 3 over Q( m , n , k , l ) and obtain a subfamily of rank (exactly) four over Q( k ) and determine a set of its free generators. Besides, we show there exist infinitely many elliptic curves of rank ≥ 5 parameterized by a rank five quartic elliptic curve. We also find a few particular examples with higher ranks. The families we construct have Z/2Z torsion subgroups in general. The previous work [13] has obtained similar Pythagorean quadruplet elliptic curve families in two parameters with rank ≥ 3. (Recall that by a Pythagorean quadruplet ( a , b , c , d ), we mean an integer solution to the quadratic equation a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 .)

Abstract:We derive the Cardano formula of cubic equations by completing the cube, and provide radical solutions to some algebraic equations of degree greater than 3 by completing powers. The main idea of completing the cube and higher powers arises from David Harrison's center theory of higher degree forms. Elementary criteria and solving algorithms for such algebraic equations are presented, and the computation amounts to solving linear equations and quadratic equations.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new method of solving the classical diophantine equation $A^4+B^4=C^4+D^4$. Two methods of solving this equation, given by Euler, yield parametric solutions given by polynomials of degrees 7 and 13. Several other parametric solutions are now known, and with the exception of one solution of degree 11, all the published solutions are of degrees $6n+1$ for some integer $n$. The method described in this paper yields new parametric solutions of degrees 21, 39 and 75, that is, degrees that are expressible as $6n+3$.

Based on well-known solving methods, we have developed a new numerical algorithm that solves the equation for any quaternions a and b in any algebra $\mathbb{H}(\alpha,\beta)$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:For a finitely generated group $G$, the \emph{Diophantine problem} over $G$ is the algorithmic problem of deciding whether a given equation $W(z_1,z_2,\ldots,z_k) = 1$ (perhaps restricted to a fixed subclass of equations) has a solution in $G$. In this paper, we investigate the algorithmic complexity of the Diophantine problem for the class $\mathcal{C}$ of quadratic equations over the metabelian Baumslag-Solitar groups $\mathbf{BS}(1,n)$. We prove that this problem is $\mathbf{NP}$-complete whenever $n\neq \pm 1$, and determine the algorithmic complexity for various subclasses (orientable, nonorientable etc.) of $\mathcal{C}$.

Abstract:The solvability of the cubic congruence $x^{3}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ is referred to as the $\textit{cubic character of 2}$. In evaluating the cubic character of 2, we introduce the Eisenstein integers, Gauss and Jacobi sums, and the law of cubic reciprocity. We motivate this proof by giving ample historical information surrounding the early development of higher reciprocity laws as well as the Gauss' proof of the solvability of the quadratic congruence $x^{2}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$; conventionally the $\textit{quadratic character of 2}$. We simultaneously outline other relevant contributions by Fermat, Euler, Legendre, Jacobi, and Eisenstein.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.
