Abstract:In this note I give simple proofs of classical results of Euler, Legendre and Sylvester showing that for certain integers M there are no (or only a few) solutions of $x^3 + y^3 = M$, with $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}$. The proofs all use a single argument -- infinite 3-descent in the ring $\mathcal{O} = \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ of Eisenstein integers. (Everything needed about $\mathcal{O}$ is developed from scratch.) The reader only needs the briefest acquaintance with complex numbers, fields and congruence modulo an element of a commutative ring. In particular I never say anything about ideals or elliptic curves (though I do mention cubic reciprocity in passing), and a clever high-school student might well enjoy the note. A few new results with $M$ in $\mathcal{O}$ and $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}[\omega]$ are also derived.

Small solutions to homogeneous and inhomogeneous cubic equations

Abstract:We study the solubility of cubic equations over the integers. Assuming a necessary congruence condition, the existence of such solutions is established when the $h$-invariant of $C$ is at least $14$, improving on work of Davenport-Lewis and generalizing the method from Heath-Brown's seminal work in the homogeneous case. We also provide an upper bound on the smallest solution, polynomially in the height of the coefficients. The method also yields new results in the homogeneous case where we generalize and improve on previous work of Browning, Dietmann and Elliott.

Abstract:We can recast the Yang-Baxter equation as a triple product equation. Assuming the triple product to satisfy some algebraic relations, we can find new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. This program has been completed here for the simplest triple systems which we call octonionic and quaternionic. The solutions are of rational type.

Abstract:We derive the Cardano formula of cubic equations by completing the cube, and provide radical solutions to some algebraic equations of higher degree by completing powers. The main idea of completing powers arises from Harrison's center theory of higher degree forms. A very simple criterion for such algebraic equations is presented, and the computation amounts to solving linear equations and quadratic equations.

Abstract:Methods for curve modeling with cubic algebraic curves based on geometric constraints are introduced in this paper. A 1-parameter family of cubic curves with four given points as well as two tangent lines at the endpoints is constructed in the first part of the paper. A 1-parameter family and 2-parameter family of cubic curve constructions are presented for interpolating two given endpoints and two given tangent lines as well as two given curvatures at the endpoints in the last part of the paper.

Abstract:This paper contains an account of arbitrary cubic function fields of characteristic three. We define a standard form for an arbitrary cubic curve and consider its function field. By considering an integral basis for the maximal order of these function fields, we are able to calculate the field discriminant and the genus. We also describe the splitting behavior of any place, and give composition and reduction algorithms for arithmetic in the ideal class group.

Abstract:In this paper, an ancient Babylonian algorithm for calculating the square root of 2 is unveiled, and the potential link between this primitive technique and an ancient Chinese method is explored. The iteration process is a symmetrical property, whereby the approximate root converges to the exact one through harmonious interactions between two approximate roots. Subsequently, the algorithm is extended in an ingenious manner to solve algebraic equations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the modified algorithm, a transcendental equation that arises in MEMS systems is considered. Furthermore, the established algorithm is adeptly adapted to handle differential equations and fractal-fractional differential equations. Two illustrative examples are presented for consideration: the first is a nonlinear first-order differential equation, and the second is the renowned Duffing equation. The results demonstrate that this age-old Babylonian approach offers a novel and highly effective method for addressing contemporary problems with remarkable ease, presenting a promising solution to a diverse range of modern challenges.

The Powers of 9 and Related Mathematical Tables from Babylon

Abstract:Late-Babylonian mathematics (450-100 BC), represented by some 60 cuneiform tablets from Babylon and Uruk, is incompletely known compared to its abundantly preserved, well-studied Old-Babylonian predecessor (1800-1600 BC). With the present paper, 16 fragments from Babylon, probably belonging to 13 different tablets, are added to this corpus. Two remarkable tablets represent a hitherto unknown class of very large factorization tables that can be adequately described as Babylonian examples of number crunching (Section I). In these tables a very large sexagesimal number representing a small factor (9 or 12) raised to a high power, or a product of such numbers, is repeatedly divided by its constituent factors (9 or 12), very likely until 1 is reached. In Text A the initial number is a 25-digit number equivalent to 9 to the power 46; in Text B it is a 30-digit number equivalent to 9 to the power 11 times 12 to the power 39 - the longest number attested in ancient Mesopotamia and, probably, in all antiquity. Most other fragments belong to tables with reciprocals (Section II) and squares (Section III). Finally, two fragments contain multiplications of one kind or another (Section IV).

Abstract:In Ramanujan's Lost Notebook there is an amazing identity that furnishes infinitely many "almost counterexamples" to the cubic Fermat's Last Theorem, with no indication whatsoever how he discovered it. In 1995, Michael Hirschhorn explained, in a brilliant way, how Ramanujan may have done it, based on a certain polynomial identity for a sum of four cubes. Much earlier, Eri Jabotinsky, in an article published in 1946 (in a mathematics journal for teenagers) explained how Ramanujan may have discovered these polynomial identities needed for Hirschhorn's approach. Here we combine these two brilliant ideas (that may or may not have been how Ramanujan did it), automate it, and generalize, by developing an algorithm to solve a large class of cubic diophantine equations. Our interest in this problem was rekindled after reading Amy Alznauer's (b. Andrews) delightful children book "The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity" (Candlewick Press), 2020, where Ramanujan's identity appears in one of the illustrations.

Abstract:Consider a pair of right triangles with an equal hypotenuse. This turns out to solve the diophantine system of equations a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 = e 2 in integers. To this system we associate a family of elliptic curves with defining equation y 2 = ( x − a 2 )( x − b 2 )( x − c 2 )+ a 2 b 2 c 2 . We show that there exists a subfamily of rank ≥ 3 over Q( m , n , k , l ) and obtain a subfamily of rank (exactly) four over Q( k ) and determine a set of its free generators. Besides, we show there exist infinitely many elliptic curves of rank ≥ 5 parameterized by a rank five quartic elliptic curve. We also find a few particular examples with higher ranks. The families we construct have Z/2Z torsion subgroups in general. The previous work [13] has obtained similar Pythagorean quadruplet elliptic curve families in two parameters with rank ≥ 3. (Recall that by a Pythagorean quadruplet ( a , b , c , d ), we mean an integer solution to the quadratic equation a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 .)

On Beloch's curve that appears when solving real cubic with origami

Abstract:The Justin--Huzita--Hatori Axiom 6 of origami related to so-called neusis construction assures the solution of real cubic equations shown by Beloch in 1936. We investigate a certain real cubic curve $F(x,y)=0$, say, Beloch's curve that appears in the algorithm and prove that its shape is determined by the signature of the Hessian $\mathcal{H}_F=-4(4p+q^2)$ at its uniquely existing singular point $P(p,q)$. This viewpoint would shed new light on the relationship between Axioms 5 and 6.

Abstract:One of the greatest achievements of Greek mathematics is the proof that the square root of 2 is irrational. It has not been thought that the Babylonians appreciated the concept of irrationality and certainly that they did not prove that the square root of two is irrational. Here we show that two Babylonian geometry problem tablets contain a simple proof of the irrationality of the square root of two. It is not known, as yet, if the Babylonians appreciated that these tablets indeed contained this proof.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the conjecture of R. Scott and R. Styer which asserts that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. The fundamental result proves the conjecture under some congruence condition modulo $c$ on $a$ and $b$. As applications the conjecture is confirmed to be true if $c$ takes some small values including the Fermat primes found so far, and this particularly provides an analytic proof of the celebrated theorem of Scott [R. Scott, On the equations $p^x-b^y=c$ and $a^x+b^y=c^z$, J. Number Theory 44(1993), 153-165] solving the conjecture for $c=2$ in a purely algebraic manner. The method can be generalized for smaller modulus cases, and it turns out that the conjecture holds true for infinitely many specific values of $c$ not being perfect powers. The main novelty is to apply a special type of the $p$-adic analogue to Baker's theory on linear forms in logarithms via a certain divisibility relation arising from the existence of two hypothetical solutions to the equation. The other tools include Baker's theory in the complex case and its non-Archimedean analogue for number fields together with various elementary arguments through rational and quadratic numbers, and extensive computation.

Abstract:The solvability of the cubic congruence $x^{3}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ is referred to as the $\textit{cubic character of 2}$. In evaluating the cubic character of 2, we introduce the Eisenstein integers, Gauss and Jacobi sums, and the law of cubic reciprocity. We motivate this proof by giving ample historical information surrounding the early development of higher reciprocity laws as well as the Gauss' proof of the solvability of the quadratic congruence $x^{2}\equiv 2\pmod{p}$; conventionally the $\textit{quadratic character of 2}$. We simultaneously outline other relevant contributions by Fermat, Euler, Legendre, Jacobi, and Eisenstein.

Abstract:Let X be a cubic surface over a local number field k. Given an Azumaya algebra on X, we describe the local evaluation map X(k) -> Q/Z in two cases, showing a sharp dependence on the geometry of the reduction of X. We show that a suitably generic cubic surface over a number field, whose reduction at some prime is a cone, has no Brauer-Manin obstruction. This extends results of Colliot-Thélène, Kanevsky and Sansuc.
