Abstract:We deal with the variable-sized bin covering problem: Given a list L of items in (0,1] and a finite collection B of feasible bin sizes, the goal is to select a set of bins with sizes in B and to cover them with the items in L such that the total size of the covered bins is maximized. In the on-line version of this problem, the items must be assigned to bins one by one without previewing future items. This note presents a complete solution to the on-line problem: For every collection B of bin sizes, we give an on-line approximation algorithm with a worst-case ratio r(B), and we prove that no on-line algorithm can perform better in the worst case. The value r(B) mainly depends on the largest gap between consecutive bin sizes.

Abstract:In the online bin packing problem, a list of items with integral sizes between 1 to B arrive one by one. Each item must be irrevocably assigned into a bin of capacity B upon its arrival without any information on the subsequent items, and the goal is to minimize the number of used bins. In this paper, we deal with online bin packing from a new sight. We present an asymptotic competitive scheme, i.e., for any ϵ>0, the asymptotic competitive ratio is at most ρ⁎+ϵ, where ρ⁎ is the smallest possible asymptotic competitive ratio among all online algorithms. Apart from the technical results, the analysis to bridge the online and the off-line approaches might be of particular interests.

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this article, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In 2002, Seiden and van Stee [Seiden and van Stee 2003] proposed an elegant algorithm called H ⊗ C , comprised of the Harmonic algorithm H and the Improved Harmonic algorithm C , for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the Super Harmonic algorithm [Seiden 2002], a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in Seiden and van Stee [2003], the previous analysis framework does not work. In this article, we give a positive answer for this question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.
Online Bin Covering with Frequency Predictions

Abstract:We study the discrete bin covering problem where a multiset of items from a fixed set $S \subseteq (0,1]$ must be split into disjoint subsets while maximizing the number of subsets whose contents sum to at least $1$. We study the online discrete variant, where $S$ is finite, and items arrive sequentially. In the purely online setting, we show that the competitive ratios of best deterministic (and randomized) algorithms converge to $\frac{1}{2}$ for large $S$, similar to the continuous setting. Therefore, we consider the problem under the prediction setting, where algorithms may access a vector of frequencies predicting the frequency of items of each size in the instance. In this setting, we introduce a family of online algorithms that perform near-optimally when the predictions are correct. Further, we introduce a second family of more robust algorithms that presents a tradeoff between the performance guarantees when the predictions are perfect and when predictions are adversarial. Finally, we consider a stochastic setting where items are drawn independently from any fixed but unknown distribution of $S$. Using results from the PAC-learnability of probabilities in discrete distributions, we also introduce a purely online algorithm whose average-case performance is near-optimal with high probability for all finite sets $S$ and all distributions of $S$.

Abstract:In the extensible bin packing problem we are asked to pack a set of items into a given number of bins, each with an original size. However, the original bin sizes can be extended if necessary. The goal is to minimize the total size of the bins. We consider the problem with unequal (original) bin sizes and present the tight bound of a list scheduling algorithm for each collection of original bin sizes and each number of bins. We further give better on-line algorithms for the two-bin case and the three-bin case. Interestingly, it is shown that the on-line algorithms have better competitive ratios for unequal bins than for equal bins. Some variants of the problem are also discussed.

Abstract:We study a new variant of on-line bin packing problem, in which each item ai is associated with a size ai and also a release time ri so that it must be placed at least ri above from the bottom of a bin. Items arrive in turn and must be assigned without any knowledge of subsequence items. The goal is to pack all items into unit-size bins using the minimum number of bins. We study the problem with all items have equal size. First, we show that the ANY FIT algorithm cannot be approximated within any constant. Abstract:We present a new generalization of the bin covering problem that is known to be a strongly NP-hard problem. In our generalization there is a positive constant , and we are given a set of items each of which has a positive size. We would like to find a partition of the items into bins. We say that a bin is near exact covered if the total size of items packed into the bin is between 1 and . Our goal is to maximize the number of near exact covered bins. If or is given as part of the input, our problem is shown here to have no approximation algorithm with a bounded asymptotic approximation ratio (assuming that ). However, for the case where is seen as a constant, we present an asymptotic fully polynomial time approximation scheme (AFPTAS) that is our main contribution.

Abstract:The (online) bin packing problem with LIB constraint is stated as follows: The items arrive one by one, and must be packed into unit capacity bins, but a bigger item cannot be packed into a bin which already contains a smaller item. The number of used bins has to be minimized as usually. We show that the absolute performance bound of algorithm First Fit is not worse than 2+1/6≈2.1666 for the problem, improving the previous best upper bound 2.5. Moreover, if the item sizes do not exceed 1/d, then we improve the previous best result 2+1/d to 2+1/d(d+2), for any d≥2. (Both previously best results are due to Epstein, Nav. Res. Logist. 56(8):780–786, 2009.) Furthermore, we define a problem with the generalized LIB constraint, where some incoming items cannot be packed into the bins of some already packed items. The (in)compatibility of the incoming item with the items already packed becomes known only at the arrival of the actual item, and is given by an undirected graph (and, as usual in case of online graph problems, we can see only that part of the graph what already arrived). We show that 3 is an upper bound for this general problem if some natural transitivity constraint is satisfied.

Abstract:Simchi-Levi (Naval Res. Logist. 41 (1994) 579-585) proved that the famous bin packing algorithms FF and BF have an absolute worst-case ratio of no more than 74, and FFD and BFD have an absolute worst-case ratio of 32, respectively. These algorithms run in time O(nlogn). In this paper, we provide a linear time constant space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) off-line approximation algorithms with absolute worst-case ratio 32. This result is best possible unless P=NP. Furthermore, we present a linear time constant space on-line algorithm and prove that the absolute worst-case ratio is 74.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:Recently, Renault (2016) studied the dual bin packing problem in the per-request advice model of online algorithms. He showed that given $O(1/\epsilon)$ advice bits for each input item allows approximating the dual bin packing problem online to within a factor of $1+\epsilon$. Renault asked about the advice complexity of dual bin packing in the tape-advice model of online algorithms. We make progress on this question. Let $s$ be the maximum bit size of an input item weight. We present a conceptually simple online algorithm that with total advice $O\left(\frac{s + \log n}{\epsilon^2}\right)$ approximates the dual bin packing to within a $1+\epsilon$ factor. To this end, we describe and analyze a simple offline PTAS for the dual bin packing problem. Although a PTAS for a more general problem was known prior to our work (Kellerer 1999, Chekuri and Khanna 2006), our PTAS is arguably simpler to state and analyze. As a result, we could easily adapt our PTAS to obtain the advice-complexity result. We also consider whether the dependence on $s$ is necessary in our algorithm. We show that if $s$ is unrestricted then for small enough $\epsilon > 0$ obtaining a $1+\epsilon$ approximation to the dual bin packing requires $\Omega_\epsilon(n)$ bits of advice. To establish this lower bound we analyze an online reduction that preserves the advice complexity and approximation ratio from the binary separation problem due to Boyar et al. (2016). We define two natural advice complexity classes that capture the distinction similar to the Turing machine world distinction between pseudo polynomial time algorithms and polynomial time algorithms. Our results on the dual bin packing problem imply the separation of the two classes in the advice complexity world.

Approximation Algorithms for Variable-Sized and Generalized Bin Covering

Abstract:We consider the Generalized Bin Covering (GBC) problem: We are given $m$ bin types, where each bin of type $i$ has profit $p_i$ and demand $d_i$. Furthermore, there are $n$ items, where item $j$ has size $s_j$. A bin of type $i$ is covered if the set of items assigned to it has total size at least the demand $d_i$. In that case, the profit of $p_i$ is earned and the objective is to maximize the total profit. To the best of our knowledge, only the cases $p_i = d_i = 1$ (Bin Covering) and $p_i = d_i$ (Variable-Sized Bin Covering (VSBC)) have been treated before. We study two models of bin supply: In the unit supply model, we have exactly one bin of each type, i.\,e., we have individual bins. By contrast, in the infinite supply model, we have arbitrarily many bins of each type. Clearly, the unit supply model is a generalization of the infinite supply model. To the best of our knowledge the unit supply model has not been studied yet. Our results for the unit supply model hold not only asymptotically, but for all instances. This contrasts most of the previous work on \prob{Bin Covering}. We prove that there is a combinatorial 5-approximation algorithm for GBC with unit supply, which has running time $\bigO{nm\sqrt{m+n}}$. Furthermore, for VSBC we show that the natural and fast Next Fit Decreasing ($\NFD$) algorithm is a 9/4-approximation in the unit supply model. The bound is tight for the algorithm and close to being best-possible. We show that there is an AFPTAS for VSBC in the \emph{infinite} supply model.

A Subquadratic Bound for Online Bisection

Abstract:The online bisection problem is a natural dynamic variant of the classic optimization problem, where one has to dynamically maintain a partition of $n$ elements into two clusters of cardinality $n/2$. During runtime, an online algorithm is given a sequence of requests, each being a pair of elements: an inter-cluster request costs one unit while an intra-cluster one is free. The algorithm may change the partition, paying a unit cost for each element that changes its cluster. This natural problem admits a simple deterministic $O(n^2)$-competitive algorithm [Avin et al., DISC 2016]. While several significant improvements over this result have been obtained since the original work, all of them either limit the generality of the input or assume some form of resource augmentation (e.g., larger clusters). Moreover, the algorithm of Avin et al. achieves the best known competitive ratio even if randomization is allowed. In this paper, we present the first randomized online algorithm that breaks this natural quadratic barrier and achieves a competitive ratio of $\tilde{O}(n^{23/12})$ without resource augmentation and for an arbitrary sequence of requests.
