Abstract:Simchi-Levi (Naval Res. Logist. 41 (1994) 579-585) proved that the famous bin packing algorithms FF and BF have an absolute worst-case ratio of no more than 74, and FFD and BFD have an absolute worst-case ratio of 32, respectively. These algorithms run in time O(nlogn). In this paper, we provide a linear time constant space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) off-line approximation algorithms with absolute worst-case ratio 32. This result is best possible unless P=NP. Furthermore, we present a linear time constant space on-line algorithm and prove that the absolute worst-case ratio is 74.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the 3D strip packing problem in which we are given a list of 3-dimensional boxes and required to pack all of them into a 3-dimensional strip with length 1 and width 1 and unlimited height to minimize the height used. Our results are below: i) we give an approximation algorithm with asymptotic worst-case ratio 1.69103, which improves the previous best bound of 2+ϵ by Jansen and Solis-Oba of SODA 2006; ii) we also present an asymptotic PTAS for the case in which all items have square bases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:In this paper we establish an algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which strip packing can be very well approximated by applying some bin packing algorithms. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any off-line bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining almost the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing, such as Refined Harmonic, Modified Harmonic, Harmonic++, can be applied to online strip packing. In particular, we show that online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889+ϵ on the asymptotic competitive ratio, for any arbitrarily small ϵ>0. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed by Csirik and Woeginger (1997). Moreover, the time complexity mainly depends on a sorting procedure and the bin packing algorithms employed.

Abstract:In the three dimensional strip packing problem, we are given a set of three-dimensional rectangular items I = {(x(i), y(i), z(i)) : i = 1, ..., n} and a three dimensional box B. The goal is to pack all the items in the box B without any overlap, such that the height of the packing is minimized. We consider the most basic version of the problem, where the items must be packed with their edges parallel to the edges of B and cannot be rotated.Building upon Caprara's work [4] for the two dimensional bin packing problem we obtain an approximation algorithm with a similar performance guarantee of T-infinity approximate to 1.69 where T-infinity is the well known Harmonic number that occurs naturally in the context of bin packing. The previously known approximation algorithms for this problem had worst case performance guarantees of 2 [7], 2.64 [14], 2.67 [15], 2.89 [10] and 3.25 [11].Our second algorithm is an asymptotic PTAS for the case in which all items have square bases.

Abstract:We consider the following rectangle packing problem. Given a set of rectangles, each of which is associated with a profit, we are requested to pack a subset of the rectangles into a bigger rectangle so that the total profit of rectangles packed is maximized. The rectangles may not overlap. This problem is strongly NP-hard even for packing squares with identical profits. We first present a simple (3 + ε)-approximation algorithm. Then we consider a restricted version of the problem and show a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. This restricted problem includes the case where rotation by 90° is allowed (and is possible), and the case of packing squares. We apply a similar technique to the general problem, and get an improved algorithm with a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally, we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm for the general problem.

Abstract:We study a bilevel optimization problem which is a zero-sum Stackelberg game. In this problem, there are two players, a leader and a follower, who pick items from a common set. Both the leader and the follower have their own (multi-dimensional) budgets, respectively. Each item is associated with a profit, which is the same to the leader and the follower, and will consume the leader's (follower's) budget if it is selected by the leader (follower). The leader and the follower will select items in a sequential way: First, the leader selects items within the leader's budget. Then the follower selects items from the remaining items within the follower's budget. The goal of the leader is to minimize the maximum profit that the follower can obtain. Let s_A and s_B be the dimension of the leader's and follower's budget, respectively. A special case of our problem is the bilevel knapsack problem studied by Caprara et al. [SIAM Journal on Optimization, 2014], where s_A=s_B=1. We consider the general problem and obtain an (s_B+ϵ)-approximation algorithm when s_A and s_B are both constant. In particular, if s_B=1, our algorithm implies a PTAS for the bilevel knapsack problem, which is the first O(1)-approximation algorithm. We also complement our result by showing that there does not exist any (4/3-ϵ)-approximation algorithm even if s_A=1 and s_B=2. We also consider a variant of our problem with resource augmentation when s_A and s_B are both part of the input. We obtain an O(1)-approximation algorithm with O(1)-resource augmentation, that is, we give an algorithm that returns a solution which exceeds the given leader's budget by O(1) times, and the objective value achieved by the solution is O(1) times the optimal objective value that respects the leader's budget.

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this article, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In 2002, Seiden and van Stee [Seiden and van Stee 2003] proposed an elegant algorithm called H ⊗ C , comprised of the Harmonic algorithm H and the Improved Harmonic algorithm C , for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the Super Harmonic algorithm [Seiden 2002], a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in Seiden and van Stee [2003], the previous analysis framework does not work. In this article, we give a positive answer for this question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Abstract:Given a set of rectangles we are asked to pack as many of them as possible into a bigger rectangle. The rectangles packed may not overlap and may not be rotated. This problem is NP-hard in the strong sense even for packing squares into a square. We establish the relationship between the asymptotic worst-case ratio and the (absolute) worst-case ratio for the problem. It is proved that there exists an asymptotic FPTAS, and thus a PTAS, for packing squares into a rectangle. We give an approximation algorithm with asymptotic ratio of at most two for packing rectangles, and further show a simple (2 + epsilon)-approximation algorithm.

Weconsider the most basic version of the problem, where the itemsmust be packed with their edges parallel to the edges of $B$ andcannot be rotated.Building upon Caprara's workfor the two-dimensional (2D) bin packing problem,we obtain an algorithm that, given any $\epsilon>0$, achieves an approximation of$T_{\infty}+\epsilon\approx1.69103+\epsilon$, where$T_{\infty}$ is the well-known number that occursnaturally in the context of bin packing.Our key idea is to establish a connection between bin packing solutions for an arbitrary instance$I$ and the strip packing solutions for the corresponding instance obtained from $I$ by applying the harmonic transformation to certain dimensions.Based on this connection, we also give a simple alternate proof of the $T_{\infty}+\epsilon$ approximation for 2D bin packing due to Caprara. In particular,we show how his result follows from a simple modification of the asymptotic approximation scheme for 2D strip packing due to Kenyon and Rémila.

Abstract:The Bin Packing Problem is one of the most important optimization problems. In recent years, due to its NP-hard nature, several approximation algorithms have been presented. It is proved that the best algorithm for the Bin Packing Problem has the approximation ratio 3/2 and the time order O(n), unless P=NP. In this paper, first, a 3/2-approximation algorithm is presented, then a modification to FFD algorithm is proposed to decrease time order to linear. Finally, these suggested approximation algorithms are compared with some other approximation algorithms. The experimental results show the suggested algorithms perform efficiently. In summary, the main goal of the research is presenting methods which not only enjoy the best theoretical criteria, but also perform considerably efficient in practice.

A 4-Space Bounded Approximation Algorithm for Online Bin Packing Problem.

Abstract:In this work, we study the well-known online bin packing problem and propose a new approximation algorithm under the restriction of linear time and constant bounded space. In this setting, Lee and Lee in 1985 [12] introduced an algorithm called Harmonic that achieves the asymptotic approximation ratio (AAR) of T-infinity approximate to 1.69, and showed that no O(1)-space algorithm can obtain competitive ratio better than T-infinity. Zhang et al. in 2000 [15] presented a linear time constant bounded space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) online algorithm and proved that the absolute worst-case ratio is 7/4 = 1.75. We extend Zhang et al.'s work to consider three types of bins, and show that our proposed algorithm uses no more than Inverted right perpendicular55/32 center dot OPTInverted left perpendicular bins. We first prove that the asymptotic approximation ratio is at most 55/32 = 1.71875 by using the weight function, then we show that the additive term could be reduced from 3 to less than 1 if post-processing repacking is allowed. In the end, we provide a worst-case analysis and prove that the upper bound of 55/32 is tight.

Abstract:The 3D bin packing problem (3DBPP) is a practical problem modeled from modern industry application such as container ship loading and plane cargo management. Unlike traditional bin packing problem where all bins are of the same size, this paper investigates a more general type of 3DBPP with bins of various sizes. We proposed a modified univariate marginal distribution algorithm (UMDA) for solving the problem. A packing strategy derived from a deepest bottom left packing method was employed. The modified UMDA was experimentally compared with CPLEX and a genetic algorithm (GA) approach. The experimental study showed that the proposed algorithm performed better than GA and CPLEX for large-scale instances.

A well-studied variant of 2BP is Guillotine Two-dimensional Bin Packing ( G2BP ), where rectangles must be packed in such a way that every rectangle in the packing can be obtained by applying a sequence of end-to-end axis-parallel cuts, also called guillotine cuts . Bansal et al. (Symposium on foundations of computer science (FOCS). IEEE, pp 657–666, 2005. https://doi.org/10.1109/SFCS.2005.10) gave an APTAS for G2BP. Let be the smallest constant such that for every set I of items, the number of bins in the optimal solution to G2BP for I is upper bounded by , where is the number of bins in the optimal solution to 2BP for I and c is a constant. It is known that . Bansal and Khan (2014) conjectured that . The conjecture, if true, will imply a -approximation algorithm for 2BP. Given a small constant , a rectangle is called large if both its height and width are at least , else it is called skewed . We make progress towards the conjecture by showing that when all input rectangles are skewed. We also give an APTAS for 2BP for skewed items, though general 2BP does not admit an APTAS.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items, respectively) arrive over time, which must be packed into square bins of size 1 x 1. 90 degrees-rotation of an item is allowed. When an item arrives, we must pack it into an active bin immediately without any knowledge of the future items. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all the items in the sequence. In the 1-space bounded variant, there is only one active bin for packing the current item. If the active bin does not have enough space to pack the item, it must be closed and a new active bin is opened. Our contributions are as follows: For 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing, we propose an online packing strategy with competitive ratio 5.155, surpassing the previous 8.84-competitive bound. The lower bound of competitive ratio is also improved from 2.5 to 3. Furthermore, we study 1-space bounded square packing, which is a special case of the bin packing problem. We give a 4.5-competitive packing algorithm, and prove that the lower bound of competitive ratio is at least 8/3.
