Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:We deal with the variable-sized bin covering problem: Given a list L of items in (0,1] and a finite collection B of feasible bin sizes, the goal is to select a set of bins with sizes in B and to cover them with the items in L such that the total size of the covered bins is maximized. In the on-line version of this problem, the items must be assigned to bins one by one without previewing future items. This note presents a complete solution to the on-line problem: For every collection B of bin sizes, we give an on-line approximation algorithm with a worst-case ratio r(B), and we prove that no on-line algorithm can perform better in the worst case. The value r(B) mainly depends on the largest gap between consecutive bin sizes.

Abstract:In the extensible bin packing problem we are asked to pack a set of items into a given number of bins, each with an original size. However, the original bin sizes can be extended if necessary. The goal is to minimize the total size of the bins. We consider the problem with unequal (original) bin sizes and present the tight bound of a list scheduling algorithm for each collection of original bin sizes and each number of bins. We further give better on-line algorithms for the two-bin case and the three-bin case. Interestingly, it is shown that the on-line algorithms have better competitive ratios for unequal bins than for equal bins. Some variants of the problem are also discussed.

Abstract:Simchi-Levi (Naval Res. Logist. 41 (1994) 579-585) proved that the famous bin packing algorithms FF and BF have an absolute worst-case ratio of no more than 74, and FFD and BFD have an absolute worst-case ratio of 32, respectively. These algorithms run in time O(nlogn). In this paper, we provide a linear time constant space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) off-line approximation algorithms with absolute worst-case ratio 32. This result is best possible unless P=NP. Furthermore, we present a linear time constant space on-line algorithm and prove that the absolute worst-case ratio is 74.

Abstract:In the online bin packing problem, a list of items with integral sizes between 1 to B arrive one by one. Each item must be irrevocably assigned into a bin of capacity B upon its arrival without any information on the subsequent items, and the goal is to minimize the number of used bins. In this paper, we deal with online bin packing from a new sight. We present an asymptotic competitive scheme, i.e., for any ϵ>0, the asymptotic competitive ratio is at most ρ⁎+ϵ, where ρ⁎ is the smallest possible asymptotic competitive ratio among all online algorithms. Apart from the technical results, the analysis to bridge the online and the off-line approaches might be of particular interests.

Abstract:In this paper we establish an algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which strip packing can be very well approximated by applying some bin packing algorithms. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any off-line bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining almost the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing, such as Refined Harmonic, Modified Harmonic, Harmonic++, can be applied to online strip packing. In particular, we show that online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889+ϵ on the asymptotic competitive ratio, for any arbitrarily small ϵ>0. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed by Csirik and Woeginger (1997). Moreover, the time complexity mainly depends on a sorting procedure and the bin packing algorithms employed.

Abstract:The (online) bin packing problem with LIB constraint is stated as follows: The items arrive one by one, and must be packed into unit capacity bins, but a bigger item cannot be packed into a bin which already contains a smaller item. The number of used bins has to be minimized as usually. We show that the absolute performance bound of algorithm First Fit is not worse than 2+1/6≈2.1666 for the problem, improving the previous best upper bound 2.5. Moreover, if the item sizes do not exceed 1/d, then we improve the previous best result 2+1/d to 2+1/d(d+2), for any d≥2. (Both previously best results are due to Epstein, Nav. Res. Logist. 56(8):780–786, 2009.) Furthermore, we define a problem with the generalized LIB constraint, where some incoming items cannot be packed into the bins of some already packed items. The (in)compatibility of the incoming item with the items already packed becomes known only at the arrival of the actual item, and is given by an undirected graph (and, as usual in case of online graph problems, we can see only that part of the graph what already arrived). We show that 3 is an upper bound for this general problem if some natural transitivity constraint is satisfied.

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this article, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In 2002, Seiden and van Stee [Seiden and van Stee 2003] proposed an elegant algorithm called H ⊗ C , comprised of the Harmonic algorithm H and the Improved Harmonic algorithm C , for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the Super Harmonic algorithm [Seiden 2002], a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in Seiden and van Stee [2003], the previous analysis framework does not work. In this article, we give a positive answer for this question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Abstract:We consider the following rectangle packing problem: Given a set of rectangles, each of which is associated with a profit, we are requested to pack a subset of the rectangles into a bigger rectangle to maximize the total profit of rectangles packed. The rectangles may not overlap and may or may not be rotated. This problem is strongly NP-hard even for packing squares with identical profits. A simple (3 + ε)-approximation algorithm is presented. We further improve the algorithm by showing a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. A number of restricted cases are also considered.

Abstract:We study a new variant of on-line bin packing problem, in which each item ai is associated with a size ai and also a release time ri so that it must be placed at least ri above from the bottom of a bin. Abstract:The online removable square packing problem is a two-dimen-sional version of the online removable Knapsack problem. For a sequence of squares with side length at most 1, we are requested to pack a subset of them into a unit square bin in an online fashion where the online player can decide whether to take the current square or not and which squares currently in the unit square to remove. The goal is to maximize the total packed area. Our results include: (i) No online algorithm can achieve a better competitive ratio than $(\sqrt{5}+3)/2\approx 2.618$. (ii) The matching upper bound is achieved by a relatively simple online algorithm if repacking is allowed. (iii) Without repacking, we can achieve an upper bound of 3 by using the concept of bricks of Januszewski and Lassak. (iv) The offline version of the problem admits a PTAS.

Abstract:In online strip packing we are asked to pack a list of rectangles one by one into a vertical strip of unit width, without any information about future rectangles. The goal is to minimize the total height of strip used. The best known algorithm is First Fit Shelf algorithm (Baker and Schwarz in SIAM J. Comput. 12(3):508–525, 1983), which has an absolute competitive ratio of 6.99 under the assumption that the height of each rectangle is bounded from above by one. We improve the shelf algorithm and show an absolute competitive ratio of $7/2+\sqrt{10}\approx 6.6623$ without the restriction on rectangle heights. Our algorithm also beats the best known online algorithm for parallel job scheduling.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (First Fit Decreasing Height) as a subroutine, we get a practical (simple and fast) algorithm for strip packing with an upper bound 11/9. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing can be applied to online strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic competitive ratio. It implies online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889 on the asymptotic competitive ratio. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed in [5].

Abstract:We study a bilevel optimization problem which is a zero-sum Stackelberg game. In this problem, there are two players, a leader and a follower, who pick items from a common set. Both the leader and the follower have their own (multi-dimensional) budgets, respectively. Each item is associated with a profit, which is the same to the leader and the follower, and will consume the leader's (follower's) budget if it is selected by the leader (follower). The leader and the follower will select items in a sequential way: First, the leader selects items within the leader's budget. Then the follower selects items from the remaining items within the follower's budget. The goal of the leader is to minimize the maximum profit that the follower can obtain. Let s_A and s_B be the dimension of the leader's and follower's budget, respectively. A special case of our problem is the bilevel knapsack problem studied by Caprara et al. [SIAM Journal on Optimization, 2014], where s_A=s_B=1. We consider the general problem and obtain an (s_B+ϵ)-approximation algorithm when s_A and s_B are both constant. In particular, if s_B=1, our algorithm implies a PTAS for the bilevel knapsack problem, which is the first O(1)-approximation algorithm. We also complement our result by showing that there does not exist any (4/3-ϵ)-approximation algorithm even if s_A=1 and s_B=2. We also consider a variant of our problem with resource augmentation when s_A and s_B are both part of the input. We obtain an O(1)-approximation algorithm with O(1)-resource augmentation, that is, we give an algorithm that returns a solution which exceeds the given leader's budget by O(1) times, and the objective value achieved by the solution is O(1) times the optimal objective value that respects the leader's budget.
