Abstract:We deal with the variable-sized bin covering problem: Given a list L of items in (0,1] and a finite collection B of feasible bin sizes, the goal is to select a set of bins with sizes in B and to cover them with the items in L such that the total size of the covered bins is maximized. In the on-line version of this problem, the items must be assigned to bins one by one without previewing future items. This note presents a complete solution to the on-line problem: For every collection B of bin sizes, we give an on-line approximation algorithm with a worst-case ratio r(B), and we prove that no on-line algorithm can perform better in the worst case. The value r(B) mainly depends on the largest gap between consecutive bin sizes.

Abstract:In this paper we will consider a special relaxation of the well-known online bin packing problem. In a batched bin packing problem (BBPP)–defined by Gutin et al. (2005)–the elements come in batches and one batch is available for packing in a given time. If we have K≥2 batches then we denote the problem by K-BBPP. In Gutin et al. (2005) the authors gave a 1.3871… lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio (ACR) of any on-line 2-BBBP algorithm. In this paper we investigate the 3-BBPP, and we give 1.51211… lower bound for its ACR.

Abstract:In the extensible bin packing problem we are asked to pack a set of items into a given number of bins, each with an original size. However, the original bin sizes can be extended if necessary. The goal is to minimize the total size of the bins. We consider the problem with unequal (original) bin sizes and present the tight bound of a list scheduling algorithm for each collection of original bin sizes and each number of bins. We further give better on-line algorithms for the two-bin case and the three-bin case. Interestingly, it is shown that the on-line algorithms have better competitive ratios for unequal bins than for equal bins. Some variants of the problem are also discussed.

Abstract:In the online bin packing problem, a list of items with integral sizes between 1 to B arrive one by one. Each item must be irrevocably assigned into a bin of capacity B upon its arrival without any information on the subsequent items, and the goal is to minimize the number of used bins. In this paper, we deal with online bin packing from a new sight. We present an asymptotic competitive scheme, i.e., for any ϵ>0, the asymptotic competitive ratio is at most ρ⁎+ϵ, where ρ⁎ is the smallest possible asymptotic competitive ratio among all online algorithms. Apart from the technical results, the analysis to bridge the online and the off-line approaches might be of particular interests.

Abstract:This paper concerns the problem of scheduling jobs with unit processing time and nonidentical sizes on single or parallel identical batch machines. The objective is to minimize the total completion time of all jobs. We show that the worst-case ratio of the algorithm based on the bin-packing algorithm First Fit Increasing lies in the interval $$\left[ \frac{109}{82}, \frac{2+\sqrt{2}}{2}\right] \approx [1.3293, 1.7071]$$ for the single machine case, and is no more than $$\frac{6+\sqrt{2}}{4}\approx 1.8536$$ for the parallel machines case.

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has attracted great research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this paper, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In SODA 2002 \cite{SS03}, Seiden and van Stee proposed an elegant algorithm called $H \otimes B$, comprised of the {\em Harmonic algorithm} $H$ and the {\em Improved Harmonic algorithm} $B$, for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the {\em Super Harmonic algorithm} \cite{S02}, a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in \cite{SS03}, the previous analysis framework does not work. In this paper, we give a positive answer for the above question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Abstract:We study a new variant of on-line bin packing problem, in which each item ai is associated with a size ai and also a release time ri so that it must be placed at least ri above from the bottom of a bin. Items arrive in turn and must be assigned without any knowledge of subsequence items. The goal is to pack all items into unit-size bins using the minimum number of bins. We study the problem with all items have equal size. First, we show that the ANY FIT algorithm cannot be approximated within any constant. Abstract:Here, we revisit the bounded batch scheduling problem with nonidentical job sizes on single and parallel identical machines, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. For the single machine case, we present an algorithm which calls an online algorithm P (chosen arbitrarily) for the one-dimensional bin-packing problem as a sub-procedure, and prove that its worst-case ratio is the same as the absolute performance ratio of P. Hence, there exists an algorithm with worst-case ratio 17/10, which is better than any known upper bound on this problem. For the parallel machines case, we prove that there does not exist any polynomial-time algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than 2 unless P = NP, even if all jobs have unit processing time. Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling jobs on-line on parallel batch processing machines with dynamic job arrivals to minimize makespan. We are given m identical batch processing machines, each of which can handle up to B (the capacity of a machine) jobs simultaneously. The jobs that are processed together form a batch, and all jobs in a batch start and complete at the same time. The processing time of a batch is a constant, which is independent of the number and identity of the jobs. Each job becomes available at its arrival time, which is unknown in advance. First we deal with the unbounded case where the capacity of the batch processing machines is infinite, and derive an optimal on-line algorithm with competitive ratio 1+ g m , where g m >0 is determined by (1+ g m ) m +1 = g m +2. We then consider the bounded case where the capacity B of the batch processing machines is bounded. We provide an on-line algorithm with competitive ratio (\sqrt{5}+1)/2 (the golden ratio) and prove that the result is the best possible for all m .

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:The (online) bin packing problem with LIB constraint is stated as follows: The items arrive one by one, and must be packed into unit capacity bins, but a bigger item cannot be packed into a bin which already contains a smaller item. The number of used bins has to be minimized as usually. We show that the absolute performance bound of algorithm First Fit is not worse than 2+1/6≈2.1666 for the problem, improving the previous best upper bound 2.5. Moreover, if the item sizes do not exceed 1/d, then we improve the previous best result 2+1/d to 2+1/d(d+2), for any d≥2. (Both previously best results are due to Epstein, Nav. Res. Logist. 56(8):780–786, 2009.) Furthermore, we define a problem with the generalized LIB constraint, where some incoming items cannot be packed into the bins of some already packed items. The (in)compatibility of the incoming item with the items already packed becomes known only at the arrival of the actual item, and is given by an undirected graph (and, as usual in case of online graph problems, we can see only that part of the graph what already arrived). We show that 3 is an upper bound for this general problem if some natural transitivity constraint is satisfied.

Abstract:The online removable square packing problem is a two-dimen-sional version of the online removable Knapsack problem. For a sequence of squares with side length at most 1, we are requested to pack a subset of them into a unit square bin in an online fashion where the online player can decide whether to take the current square or not and which squares currently in the unit square to remove. The goal is to maximize the total packed area. Our results include: (i) No online algorithm can achieve a better competitive ratio than $(\sqrt{5}+3)/2\approx 2.618$. (ii) The matching upper bound is achieved by a relatively simple online algorithm if repacking is allowed. (iii) Without repacking, we can achieve an upper bound of 3 by using the concept of bricks of Januszewski and Lassak. (iv) The offline version of the problem admits a PTAS.

Abstract:In online strip packing we are asked to pack a list of rectangles one by one into a vertical strip of unit width, without any information about future rectangles. The goal is to minimize the total height of strip used. The best known algorithm is First Fit Shelf algorithm (Baker and Schwarz in SIAM J. Comput. 12(3):508–525, 1983), which has an absolute competitive ratio of 6.99 under the assumption that the height of each rectangle is bounded from above by one. We improve the shelf algorithm and show an absolute competitive ratio of $7/2+\sqrt{10}\approx 6.6623$ without the restriction on rectangle heights. Our algorithm also beats the best known online algorithm for parallel job scheduling.

Abstract:We study a specific bin packing problem which arises from the channel assignment problems in cellular networks. In cellular communications, frequency channels are some limited resource which may need to share by various users. However, in order to avoid signal interference among users, a user needs to specify to share the channel with at most how many other users, depending on the user’s application. Under this setting, the problem of minimizing the total channels used to support all users can be modeled as a specific bin packing problem as follows: Given a set of items, each with two attributes, weight and fragility. We need to pack the items into bins such that, for each bin, the sum of weight in the bin must be at most the smallest fragility of all the items packed into the bin. The goal is to minimize the total number of bins (i.e., the channels in the cellular network) used. We consider the on-line version of this problem, where items arrive one by one. The next item arrives only after the current item has been packed, and the decision cannot be changed. We show that the asymptotic competitive ratio is at least 2. We also consider the case where the ratio of maximum fragility and minimum fragility is bounded by a constant. In this case, we present a class of online algorithms with asymptotic competitive ratio at most of 1.7r, for any r > 1.
